    39. How Starting a Coffee Table Book Became So Much More with Candice Brooke

In this episode of Founders and Friends, Ronniesha Rivera sits down with returning guest Candace of Mark Brook Photography to discuss the unexpected journey behind The Design Ledger — a curated coffee table book celebrating Charleston’s best interiors. What began as a creative marketing idea quickly evolved into an accidental business, opening up conversations about publishing, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and the realities of scaling a creative product.Candace shares how her background in wedding photography and luxury albums inspired the concept for The Design Ledger, originally envisioned as a relationship-building tool and “love letter” to Charleston’s design community. Instead of traditional advertising, the book became a unique way to connect designers, showcase timeless interiors, and create something tangible in an increasingly digital industry. The conversation dives into the intense behind-the-scenes process of self-publishing Volume One — from photographing projects and designing layouts to navigating legal contracts and surviving a major printing disaster just weeks before launch. Despite the setbacks, the book gained immediate traction, with local stores and designers eager to carry it, turning what was meant to be a gifted marketing piece into a retail product and growing brand.Candace also opens up about the financial realities of producing high-quality coffee table books, including losing money on wholesale sales due to high production costs, and her search for large-scale printing solutions that can support future growth. Looking ahead, she shares her ambitious five-year vision to expand The Design Ledger into cities across the United States through a franchise-style model while preserving its identity as a curated art piece rather than an advertising publication.Throughout the episode, both Candace and Ronniesha reflect on entrepreneurship, creative risk-taking, and the power of building meaningful relationships through intentional projects. Candace closes with advice for aspiring creators: if you feel called to make something beautiful, start now — but give yourself the time and patience to do it well. You can find Candice at:https://www.markbrooke.com/https://www.readthedesignledger.com/This Episode was brought to you by Vetted by DesignIf you are looking to outsource anything in your design business check out Vetted by Design to find some amazing highly vetted pros you can trust to help you grow your business.www.vetted-bydesign.comhttps://www.instagram.com/vettedbydesign/Connect with all things Founders & Friends on our Facebook Group & Instagram*Only for interior designers & pro's who serve the industry

    26. How I Secured $33k in design fees going into 2026

What happens when you actually track your marketing—and tell the truth about what worked and what didn’t?In this episode of Founders and Friends, host Ronniesha Rivera pulls back the curtain on a four-month experiment she calls the “Six Marketing Shifts.” Born out of a slow season in early 2025, the experiment generated nine leads and $33,000 in secured design fees and product revenue—but the real value came from the insights behind the numbers.Ronniesha breaks down each of the six shifts she tested, including Instagram, email marketing, blogging, cold pitching, in-person networking, and Google paid ads. She shares which channels actually moved the needle, which ones fell flat, and why lead tracking completely changed how she evaluates her marketing efforts. You’ll hear how cold pitching produced her highest-value project to date, why a long-ignored platform delivered a surprise $15K opportunity, and what she’s choosing to double down on heading into 2026.The conversation also dives deep into pricing lessons, including a major misbid on a multimillion-dollar new build that forced Ronniesha to rethink how she prices full-service design. She shares how implementing a pricing matrix (with support from Seriously Happy Consulting) helped her set clearer boundaries, establish a $5,000 minimum design fee, and bid projects more intentionally—without burnout or undercutting her expertise. Finally, Ronniesha outlines her bigger vision: transitioning fully into a CEO role by outsourcing across all areas of her work—from Alder and Stone Design Studio, to Vetted by Design, to the podcast itself (and even childcare). This episode is an honest, practical look at growth, margins, and what it really takes to build a sustainable design business.Whether you’re experimenting with marketing, struggling with pricing, or preparing to step out of the day-to-day and lead at a higher level, this episode is packed with real numbers, real lessons, and real encouragement. This Episode was brought to you by Vetted by DesignIf you are looking to outsource anything in your design business check out Vetted by Design to find some amazing highly vetted pros you can trust to help you grow your business.www.vetted-bydesign.comhttps://www.instagram.com/vettedbydesign/Connect with all things Founders & Friends on our Facebook Group & Instagram*Only for interior designers & pro's who serve the industry

    24. What Designers Get Wrong When They Go Out on Their Own with Georgia Economakis

After nearly 30 years in the interior design industry, Georgia — founder of Designs by Georgia — reached a pivotal moment: stay comfortable, or take the leap into business ownership. In this episode, Georgia and host Ronniesha Rivera have an honest, no-fluff conversation about what it actually takes to start and run a sustainable design firm — especially at the construction and kitchen & bath level, where liability, budgets, and boundaries matter more than aesthetics.Georgia shares why hiring an accountant first (before your first job!) is non-negotiable, why designers must bring in a lawyer early to draft contracts that protect them, and how blurry roles with contractors can quickly become a legal nightmare. 01. The Failures That Built Me: How Betting on Myself Led to Building My Dream Design Business

In this episode, I open up about my own entrepreneurial journey. A path that, honestly, started with what felt like three major failures. My very first design job out of college was at a small boutique firm. I had interned there previously, built great relationships, and landed what felt like my dream “big girl” job. But as time went on, I found myself craving more responsibility, more creativity - just more. It became clear that there was no room to grow in that role, and although it was heartbreaking, I left. Walking away from what I thought was a forever job felt like a loss of identity. I questioned everything - was I even a designer anymore?Next came a role at an architecture firm. But this was during the pandemic, and to be honest, the job barely existed. There’s not much to say other than it also ended, and even though I didn’t feel as crushed, it still stung. Another job, another chapter closed. Then came the construction company and surprisingly, this was probably my favorite job of them all. I was there for almost a year and genuinely thought I was on the path to something bigger. I started working toward a senior role, and for a while, everything felt aligned. But then, out of nowhere, the owner let me know I wouldn’t be moving up, I’d remain in a junior role. Three years into my career, and it felt like I was stuck in place. Again. I wanted autonomy. I wanted creativity. I wanted more. So, I left. Again.Three jobs in three years… cough yikes. After the construction job, I hit a crossroads: Do I go find yet another job and keep trying to prove myself to someone else? Or do I bet on me?I was so deeply over the cycle of trying to convince people of my worth. I knew what I brought to the table. I just needed the chance to show it. So, I took the leap and launched Alder and Stone Interiors. In my first two years of business, I profited somewhere around $100K. (I could crunch the exact numbers, but we’ll just round it.) Yep $100,000. And every dollar was a reminder that leaving those jobs wasn’t failure. It was redirection. So, if you take anything from this story, let it be this: always bet on yourself. You might just be amazed at what you can build. This Episode was brought to you by Vetted by Design If you are looking to outsource anything in your design business check out Vetted by Design to find some amazing highly vetted pros you can trust to help you grow your business. www.vetted-bydesign.comhttps://www.instagram.com/vettedbydesign/Connect with all things Founders & Friendshttps://www.instagram.com/foundersandfriendspod/https://www.facebook.com/groups/1706365610291273
