Can You Actually Predict a Flare? + How we use Fecal Calprotectin

No one likes doing stool tests... but you might learn to appreciate them after this video.💩 Fecal calprotectin can be a great indicator of how things are going in the gut short of doing a colonoscopy and if you want to be proactive - you can even use the test to "predict" a flare and get ahead of it before it gets bad!💩 A fecal calprotectin test can act as a warning signal for flares up to 8 to 12 weeks in advance.💩 Fecal calprotectin is a protein released into the stool when white blood cells enter the intestinal wall - A rising or persistently high level indicates active mucosal inflammation, even if you feel completely fine.💩 We use fecal calprotectin in our practice to understand better as to what's going on in the gut and if your symptoms are being driven by inflammation or something else.💡It can be very helpful for both your GI and dietitian in terms of understanding what your next treatment steps should be!We run this marker in our practice for patients and also do in depth nutrient panels to get to the bottom of what's happening and formulate a more effective nutrition treatment path.Need support from us? 💜 Work with us in our new affordable membership: https://crohnsandcolitisdietitians.com/ibd-collective-membership/Send us Fan MailNeed Support from an IBD Dietitian?🌟Work with us hereOne-on-One Coaching🌟Affordable MembershipIBD Nutrition CollectiveWant our Top E-books?🌈Get our top e-book hereFlare Guide + Meal PlanFor Sensitive Guts & Symptom Relief🌈We developed a product for youBack to Balance PlusSupport our Growing YouTube by Subscribing🎊Subscribe to YouTubeWe love helping provide quality content on IBD nutrition and making it more accessible to all through our podcast, instagram and youtube channel. GLP-1's, Peptides, Random Supplements & Things to Consider

You might not think of GLP1's would be apart of the conversation when it comes to IBD, but we continue to see more and more people trialing them for secondary conditions with IBD. In practice we have seen people often not inform their providers about GLP1 use - thinking that they do not impact gut symptoms... yet they very much do!When it comes to peptides and other random supplements - when we are in a flare we are often more vulnerable to just wanting to try anything... but it's important to exercise caution and make sure what you are taking has good evidence and is safe. Make sure to talk to your GI and dietitian about what's right for you. Also, if you find your GI doesn't have time or doesn't want to discuss your nutrition with you... we get the frustration. Yet, it's also often just not a top priority or within the scope of practice for your GI session (especially in only 15-20 minutes). Quite honestly... there is so much to unpack when it comes to that topic... tacking it on as a question at the end isn't going to get you anywhere. Plus... this is why dietitians (like us) exist! Send us Fan MailNeed Support from an IBD Dietitian?🌟Work with us hereOne-on-One Coaching🌟Affordable MembershipIBD Nutrition CollectiveWant our Top E-books?🌈Get our top e-book hereFlare Guide + Meal PlanFor Sensitive Guts & Symptom Relief🌈We developed a product for youBack to Balance PlusSupport our Growing YouTube by Subscribing🎊Subscribe to YouTubeWe love helping provide quality content on IBD nutrition and making it more accessible to all through our podcast, instagram and youtube channel. Focus on what you can ADD in + Surprise new offer!

Focusing only on what to cut out of your diet - might actually be making things worse. But hey... we have ALL been there too. 🍅And yet the conversation online is all about what to take out of the diet - and doesn't all discuss what we need to ADD to improve outcomes.🍓Your gut microbiome depends on diversity, color and fiber. 🥑The very things that are often most difficult for those with IBD... yet... there is a path and a science to building tolerance with foods. 💪Think of your gut microbiome as a muscle - the more you support it - the more your gut gets better at fermenting fibers which means - LESS symptoms and more foods tolerated. 🥦That means your list of "no way" foods doesn't have to stay that way. And there is a science to HOW you add foods in that can also make it easier. This is one of many things we help people with.➡️Ever wonder why everything you see online is so conflicting? First off it's not catered to YOU and where you are at. If you are wanting a customized to you plan and a place to ask questions at an affordable price point - we just created exactly that! This is for those who are...Want next steps & place to ask questions but you are too busy and want things to be on your time and at a low cost.... this is THAT.Sound perfect? Top IBD Friendly Foods to ADD to Your Diet | Crohn's & Colitis Diet

The internet is full of conversation about what to take out of the diet with IBD... but nobody is talking about the things you can add to improve outcomes!➕In our practice we always encourage our patients to take an "addition mindset" when it comes to their diet. In the last 11 years of group private practice - people always leave us surprised at how many foods they thought they couldn't have but NOW can! ✨It's not magic... it's science and strategy...Really Quick... Did you know..... You can watch us discuss this on YouTube too?..We have even built our own method for helping people expand their diet.🌈Many people think they have to wait 'until things are settled' to expand their diet... but it's actually the opposite! Diet expansion is one of the tools we use to reduce symptoms and induce remission.🍵So grab a matcha or hot cocoa and let's settle into a conversation about our favorite IBD friendly foods. We created this with you in mind - so you can let go of all of the noise and conflicting information out there. As we share on this video - we have found that having an "additive" mindset is truly the antidote to letting go of the chaos and making sustainable, helpful changes to improve your IBD journey.➡️Remember, if you do need help - we are here for you! Why We Don't Recommend The Low Fodmap Diet - The science & what it misses the mark on with IBD

We do not use the Low Fodmap as a primary way to help those (like us) that have Crohn's, Ulcerative colitis or Microscopic colitis - in fact it can actually hold people back from experiencing symptom relief and even remission. In this video we will unpack that further.3 Things to Consider Before Considering a Low Fodmap Approach:🥬It doesn't address inflammation - an important consideration with IBD🫐It's often done incorrectly which leads to more restriction, more microbiome challenges and poor response to medications (in IBD)🌈A Low fodmap approach is meant to help you identify trigger types but doesn't explore the complexity of that in IBD and doesn't explore how to build tolerance When we work with people, we like to be thinking of dietary and nutrition approaches that have evidence for helping you:⭐Induce remission⭐Maintain remission⭐Reduce risk of flare upsAND when you work with us, we will help guide you through that process and give you tools for how you can reduce symptoms without the frustration of an overly restrictive diet.Did you know you can watch this on YouTube? How to Figure out Dietary Triggers in IBD (when nothing makes sense) | Crohn's & Colitis Nutrition

It can feel confusing when it comes to figure out food intolerances in IBD - but there is so much more to the conversation that isn't really talked about much online like....⏰ Timing - if you are getting symptoms immediately after eating a food (like bloating or racing to the bathroom) it might not actually be the food itself - but it can still be data that we can use to drive nutrition recommendations.💪🏼 Gut Tolerance - Triggers don't always stay the same. Did you know that the more that you build up your gut microbiome - it actually gets better at fermenting fibers overtime - which means LESS symptoms overall.🥬 Your Food Patterns Matter Too - Many people use dietary tracking to pinpoint what their triggers are which can honestly be a little misleading in IBD. Your gut symptoms can be influenced not just by a single food - but food patterns, how frequently you eat, how supported your gut microbiome is and so much more!➕ It's not just about what you take out of your diet... it's also about what you ADD to your diet to support your gut microbes. So if you do dietary tracking looking for triggers.... you should also look at.... how much color and diversity am I getting overall?➡️ If you want us to take a look personally - we can! Things We Do to Lower Our Risk of Colon Cancer

Do you avoid the topic of colon cancer? So do we. Let's tackle it together.Better yet - watch this episode on YouTube here: HEREDanielle mentioned that the things we are avoiding talking about are often the things we should really be bringing into the light and taking action with. So let's do it together. It is Colon Cancer Awareness month after all. Are there any colon cancer symptoms we should be looking out for? If you have any changes like bleeding or changes in symptoms - it's important to reach out to your gastroenterology team. Many people are curious about what colon cancer symptoms to look out for, however it's important to not that many people do not have classic symptoms. So if you are at risk, be sure to get regular colonoscopies and talk with your Gastroenterologist.Even if you don't have changes or colon cancer symptoms, new guidelines suggest people as young as 45 may need to be screened. If you've got IBD, you'll likely be receiving colonoscopies every 2-3 years or sooner if you are more at risk. It's a touchy subject for me and many with IBD who live with additional risk - so I won't share all the stats with you on why you want to prevent it. I know like me, you probably already know them. But here is how we are reducing our risk:⭐Regular Colonoscopies - THE best way to prevent it and get it early. Get them every 2 years after 10 years of diagnosis or sooner if your GI suggests it.⭐Check your nutrients! Vitamin D, folate, B12 - book a call with us and we can run them for you. ⭐Get Color & Fiber in the Diet - Eat the RAINBOW® and include fiber. ⭐Start with easy to tolerate varieties like soluble fibers like B2B which includes easy to tolerate prebiotic fiber acacia along with L.plantarum 299v to help reduce bloating and pain. So, please check with your doctor or dietitian about your vitamin D levels and possible supplementation if needed. TakeawaysVitamin D is crucial for immune function and inflammation regulation. Many individuals with IBD are at risk for vitamin D deficiency.A research study shows that higher vitamin D levels may lead to lower colorectal cancer rates.Regular testing of vitamin D levels is important, especially for those with IBD.Diet alone may not provide sufficient vitamin D; supplementation is often necessary.Individual health status and lifestyle factors should guide vitamin D supplementation.Consulting healthcare providers about vitamin D levels is essential.Maintaining optimal vitamin D levels can decrease other health risks too.00:00- The Link Between Vitamin D and Colorectal Cancer03:11- Understanding Vitamin D's Role in Inflammatory Bowel Disease06:04- Optimal Vitamin D Levels and Recommendations09:10- Individualized Approaches to Vitamin D SupplementationSend us Fan MailNeed Support from an IBD Dietitian?🌟Work with us hereOne-on-One Coaching🌟Affordable MembershipIBD Nutrition CollectiveWant our Top E-books?🌈Get our top e-book hereFlare Guide + Meal PlanFor Sensitive Guts & Symptom Relief🌈We developed a product for youBack to Balance PlusSupport our Growing YouTube by Subscribing🎊Subscribe to YouTubeWe love helping provide quality content on IBD nutrition and making it more accessible to all through our podcast, instagram and youtube channel.
