He has served in the province of Guwahati, Assam (Northeast India). In 1981, he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Dibrugarh by St. John Paul II. In 1992, he became bishop of the newly established Diocese of Guwahati and was elevated to Archbishop of the same province in 1995.He served as Chairman for Evangelization for the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences for two terms. He worked closely with St. John Paul II and was one of the main editors of the Asian Synod document Ecclesia in Asia. He was also one of the main contributors to the Synod on the Word of God in 2008. In 2009, he was entrusted by Pope Benedict XVI to write the reflections for the Holy See’s Way of the Cross.Archbishop Thomas was one of the main mediators for peace in Assam and coordinated the Joint Ecumenical Peace Team, which was committed to dialogue in Northeast India. For this, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011. He received the Dr. A.P.J..
