Takeover: Daniel Elia
Daniel Elia joined the Local Roots team in the JOY 94.9 studio to play four tracks live for you. Producing music with a strong political and spiritual message, Daniel Elia encapsulates the trials and tribulations faced by the Melbourne South-Sudanese community, and what it means to be black in Australia. With an extensive background in dancing and touring, Elia was inspired by watching his favourite artists perform. At age 19, he began writing lyrics and recording his tracks on his laptop. It became apparent that his natural creativity and emotional intelligence was able to thrive through the creation of music. Elia captivates his listeners with lyrical poetry and unique instrumentals. The recognition of his talent provided him with opportunities to perform at St Kilda festival 2019, Thando’s Ep launch (part of Brunswick Music festival) 2019 and Groovin The Moo 2019. Daniel Elia spoke with VICE magazine about his conscious lyrics in collaboration with Hennessy. “Daniel Elia is at the vanguard of conscious rap in Australia, embedding a message of positivity, community, and truth through the heart of his tracks. Taking inspiration from the likes of Kendrick Lamar and J Cole, Elia is embracing the power of their socially conscious style but applying it to real Australian stories”. – VICE magazine. Val Flynn joined the Local Roots team in the JOY 94.9 studios to play four of their tracks for you. Val Flynn, a born performer and refreshing new voice in the Australian music. With foundations laid in fashion and styling, Val Flynn’s passion for music was ignited during a late-night studio session with good friend Miss Blanks, ‚”She pretty much pushed me into the booth and said bitch sing you got a voice! Use it!‚”. Reminiscent of early 2000’s hip-hop futuristic sounds, Val Flynn draws inspiration from Aayliah, Christina Aguilera, and George Michael. Exploring themes of love, sex, and individuality, Val Flynn has global ambitions to resonate with the heart beats that skip to their own sound. On ‚Werq 4 It‚ Flynn has enlisted Miss Blanks, creating an infectious combination of boss energies and unforgiving charisma. Jam Session: Maxon
Maxon joined the Local Roots team in the JOY 94.9 studios to play four of their tracks live for you. Maxon is currently shaking audiences with her trademark vocal and boundless song-writing talents. A gifted and versatile artist, Maxon burst onto the Melbourne music scene in 2016 with her own brand of raw, emotionally-driven pop songs and a dynamic vocal range that earned her comparisons to the likes of Adele, Meg Mac and even one of her biggest inspirations, Alanis Morissette. With unstoppable strength and a callousness toward burning bridges if need be, Maxon’s writing is stylistic of a diary entry; clandestine and forthright. Such confessional writing is bound to a vulnerable stage presence and a voice soaked in command, as Maxon’s audiences witness the tale of the gifted singer and her battle through the trials and tribulations of love and its conditions. Jam Session with Nancie Schipper
Nancie Schipper joined Rachel & Dinah in the Local Roots studio for this week’s live Jam Session. A Local Roots Jam Sesh is where a local independent artist stops by the studio to play 4 tracks live to air, along with a nice long chat about their music. Nancie is no newcomer to the stage, having spent the last six years tirelessly working her way around the local music scene, cutting her teeth playing pub gigs whilst too young to buy a drink at the bar. Swapping an acoustic for a telecaster and full band, the hard work is paying off for Schipper, who showcased at BIGSOUND in 2019 to packed rooms and scored a slot opening for Alex Lahey on her regional tour this October/November. The last year has seen her support Ball Park Music, Tia Gostelow, Rat!Hammock and perform at St Kilda Festival and Queenscliff Music Festival. Nancie played 2 brand new tracks not yet released – which we found out she is recording this week! Follow Nancie Schipper Website Facebook Instagram Have a new track to share? Get in touch with us! Live Jam Session with Louise Terra
Louise Terra joined Dinah & Jason in the Local Roots studio for this week’s live Jam Sesh! Each week a local independent artist stops by the Local Roots studio to perform a set of 4 tracks live to air for you. Nothing is off limits and we go deep into finding out who they are and why they chose to release music. They’re artists we love and think you’re going to fall in love with too. Louise Terra’s fascination with electronic music is in the liminal, the beautiful and weird stuff created between genres. Using the computer as her instrument, Louise Terra single-handedly crafts deliriously hooky songs from layers of vocals, pounding rhythms, and atmospheres of sounds and synthesizers. As gorgeous as they are unsettling, Louise Terra’s style of electronic dream-pop comes from a rich set of influences, yet all of her songs pulse with a similar emotional force. Her songwriting expresses her outre perspective on human nature and her somewhat futuristic take on the existential conundrums of living in such uncertain times. Have a new track to share? Live Jam Session with The Attics
Cam and Ben from local act The Attics joined Dinah and Laura in the Local Roots studio for a Jam Session. Each week a local independent artist stops by the Local Roots studio to perform a set of 4 tracks live to air for you. Nothing is off limits and we go deep into finding out who they are and why they chose to release music. They’re artists we love and think you’re going to fall in love with too. Hailing from Colac, in Victoria’s West, The Attics craft their own brand of high-contrast indie. Jangly guitars, ear worming bass hooks and percussive layers melt into a heady blend of dream-pop and soaring psych-rock. Born as a stream of pop music Cameron Wade crafted from his bedroom, The Attics came to life as a plush four-piece band experience inspired by the likes of Japanese Breakfast, Pond and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. In 2016, the young band found their feet via the release of two glimmering singles ‘Not Like’ and ‘Bluffing’ – the heart of the tracks carried the sugary remnants of Cam’s earlier DIY work. Ever since then they’ve been producing tracks we’ve fallen in love with, and the guys stopped by the Local Roots studio for a live Jam Sesh! Want to premiere a track? Get in touch with us! Interview with No/Trauma
Elisabeth from local Melbourne act No/Trauma joined Jason on the phone to chat about their very new band and the new track they’ve just released. No/Trauma is a band made up of three queer people making emo folk music. Singing about vulnerability, connection and identity. It’s a bit like Paul Kelly meets Kelly Clarkson, but sadder and queerer. Their new track Six Foot Flawless is a three minute thirty second anthemic burst of self love about growing up, being queer as in “f**k you” and learning to love yourself with a little bit of inspiration from the Greek Amazons of legend. Elisabeth clarified what roley poley meant by them in their track, with Jason noting he totally misunderstood. Want to premiere a track? Get in touch with us! Interview with CLEWS
Lilly from CLEWS joined Jason & Nat to chat about their new track and her experiences growing up with her dad and uncle in the music industry and selling merch at their gigs. We had a great chat talking all things family, and chatted about how Lilly’s grandma was in her own band. Such a musical family! CLEWS is the fresh new project of south coast sisters Lily and Grace. Raised on the anthemic ballads of the 90s, the girls are singing big choruses and writing songs that will make your heart explode. We found out about the bands obsession with aliens and how they believe that aliens can totally intercept posts on Twitter and would use it as their main source of information, so they’ve been posting some stuff on there just in case and directed it to them! We even had a cheeky moment sending a message to aliens live on the radio. We chatted about how it is being young women in the music industry and how they’re finding their feet and of course all about their brand new track Hollywood. Check out the full chat below and listen to their great music. Want to premiere a track? Get in touch with us! Send all submissions to [email protected]. Interview with GOSH
Matt from GOSH, a group of guys from the Gong (Wollongong) joined Nat & Laura on the phone to chat about their new track ‘Say Another Thing’, after asking Gang of Youths to support their tour across the country. Gosh have wasted no time in creating a cult-like following for themselves. Dynamic, melodic, emotional – yet still cool, the band follow in the footsteps of Indie rockers gone before, and allude to a very promising future for the genre. We’re vowing fro Lady Gaga to be their next suggestion as support act. Interview with Taylah Carroll
Taylah Carroll took a break from rehearsing for her upcoming gig to chat with Nat & Laura. Her music is a beautiful mix of indie folk and alt rock, she’s got some incredible style and some music you’re going to fall in love with. Taylah explains her new track Vermont is set in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, inspired by her childhood growing up in Blackburn – but calling it Blackburn probably wasn’t a goer. It’s about baggage and the history we all have and how it affects your future. We love it when Nat notes feels that when she listens to this track it’s like a big hug. We all agree, it’s a big hug under those big green trees! Taylah Carroll hopes you can connect with the track. Listen to the full interview below, and checkout her official music video! Interview with Latchy
Latchy joined Nat & Laura in the studio to chat about his new single ‘Just Call’ and his recent revamp from previous act Feather Touch to Latchy. Latchy is a multi instrumental producer, artist and generally tall guy based between Sydney and Singapore. Latchy brings you the sweet sounds of lush, nostalgic pop. His debut single is a beautiful warm piece that is a love letter to Australia touching on the overall theme of self discovery through travel. This tune has elements of fun time pop with nostalgic values similar to that of Passion Pit and Friendly Fires. Stanley explains the new project; “I was worried about keeping my personal life hidden and separate from my music but since being involved with Brooklyn at Hibernian, a project to stream intimate gigs, and meeting amazing artists who juggle many pursuits, I wanted to find a voice that was more authentically mine,” It’s an amazing introduction to the world of Latchy, which looks to have many more works ahead. Live Jam Session with Monnone Alone
Monnone Alone joined Sarah & Laura in the Local Roots studio for this week’s Jam Session. Each week we bring in an independent artist to perform and share their music live in the studio just for you. Although the name may suggest otherwise, Monnone Alone are a bona fide pop group based around the sagacious songwriting of Mark Monnone (ex-Lucksmiths) and featuring members of A-grade pop tinkerers Architecture in Helsinki, Mid-State Orange and Aleks & the Ramps. That’s almost as bona fide as it gets. Live Jam Session with Laura Imbruglia
Laura Imbruglia joined Dinah & Sarah in the Local Roots studio for this week’s Jam Session. Each week we bring in an independent artist to perform and share their music live in the studio just for you. Australian songwriter Laura Imbruglia has been releasing records since the early noughties. A restless musician with broad music taste, she’s released three albums, played almost every corner of Australia and several pockets of Europe. Although Laura has been quiet on the music front for the past 5 years (momentarily distracted by the creation of her beloved arts web series “Amateur Hour”), she’s finally back in the land of music. Following from 2013’s What A Treat and breaking a five-year radio silence, Scared of You delves deep into the mind and listening habits of Laura’s past few years, traversing realms of pub rock, brooding indie pop, classic country, shoegaze, grunge and even yacht rock. With such a broad stylistic scope, exemplified through the album’s three stand alone singles ‘Tricks’, ‘Diptych’,“The Creeps’ and now ‘Carry You Around’, Imbruglia has earned her stripes as one of Melbourne’s most exciting artists of today. Beneath the gritty, shiny surface, Scared of You sees Laura at her most openly vulnerable yet. Produced by long-time collaborator Nick Huggins, the album gives insight into the joys, frustrations, trials, and tribulations of human interaction. Tracks like ‘Give Boys Pink Toys’ and ‘You’re Shit’ push the album into politically charged heavy hitting territory, whilst subdued moments such as ‘Diptych’, ‘CBT’ and ‘Casual’ remain deeply grounded in self-reflection, and relationship mending. It’s 30 minutes of danceable, punchable, huggable catharsis that showcases the refined songwriting and chameleon like musicianship of an artist at the peak of a massive career. “The album focuses on the constant shift between insecurity, comfort, confusion and restlessness that occurs in all corners of life, and investigates and unpacks human fallibility. It wasn’t all that fun to write these songs but it sure is fun to play them!” – Laura Imbruglia Featuring a recently revitalised band lineup of Alex MacRae (Sons of Rico) on lead guitar, Kelly Dingeldei (Loobs) on bass & backing vocals, and James Trewenack (Glass Diamonds) on drums, Laura Imbruglia and her band have been garnering new and returning fans with an utterly impressive live show. The outfit supported Teenage Fanclub and The Saboteurs for sold out shows earlier this year, played to a huge crowd at Boogie Festival, and followed that with a massive national tour. Interview with Val Flynn
Val Flynn joined Nat & Laura to chat about his hot new single ‘Lover’. Val Flynn is a born performer and refreshing new voice in the Australian music. With foundations laid in fashion and styling, Val Flynn’s passion for music was ignited during a late-night studio session with good friend Miss Blanks, ‚ÄúShe pretty much pushed me into the booth and said bitch sing you got a voice! Use it!‚ Reminiscent of early 2000′ hip-hop futuristic sounds, Val Flynn draws inspiration from Aayliah, Christina Aguilera, and George Michael. Exploring themes of love, sex, and individuality, Val Flynn has global ambitions to resonate with the heart beats that skip to their own sound. On ‚ÄòWerq 4 It‚Äô Flynn has enlisted Miss Blanks, creating an infectious combination of boss energies and unforgiving charisma. Flynn sings masterfully in and out of autotune, chopped over a high energy jungle infused garage beat. Flynn describes ‚ÄôWerq 4 It‚Äô as an anthem for women and young girls who ‚Äúcan do and achieve anything in this world and don‚Äôt need a man to make it happen‚Äù. Paired with Miss Blanks‚Äô clever and commanding wordplay, ‚ÄòWerq 4 It‚Äô positions Flynn amongst Australia‚Äôs dance-pop elite. Want to premiere a track? Get in touch with us! We’re premiering a brand new single from newcomer artist C?NDY! We love new music at Local Roots, and we love it more when a brand spanking new artist drops into the studio and premieres a new track with us. We live and breathe independent Australian music/. She’s a name you may not have heard of yet, but one you’re going to remember! From the western suburbs of Sydney, independent artist ‘C?NDY’ has only recently made her debut onto the Aussie music scene, but she’s one we’re going to watch this year and on this week’s show we got her in to the studio and premiered her 3rd track! She’s storming her way to get her music out to you with a mix of boss-like tunes in the hip hop realm, as well as a brand new track with a Latino flair. If you love a track to dance to in the car or on the dance floor, then C?NDY is the perfect artist for you. She is also just a delight to chat with! We played two of C?NDY’s Tracks: Imma Do Me Pa Arriba For more information on C?NDY check out the following links: C?NDY Facebook C?NDY on Spotify Want to premiere a track? Get in touch with us! Interview with Eleanor Jacks
Eleanor Jacks joined Laura & Sarah by phone to chat about her fantastic new single ‘I’m Drunk and I Love You’. Eleanor Jacks is the artist name of singer/ songwriter Hannah from Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Eleanor Jacks was born and songs started to flow simply because they had to. Internalising the emotions wasn’t healthy. If you ask Hannah about Eleanor Jacks, her response… “Eleanor is just a girl from Sydney pumpin’ out the tunes…” Want to premiere a track?
