Man vs Mind
by Man Vs Mind
Man vs Mind is a brutally honest, often funny, and always relatable men’s mental health podcast about the things men feel but rarely talk about.Tim and J are two ordinary blokes trying to make sense of their own heads – anxiety, anger, confidence, fatherhood, stress, medication, relationships, intrusive thoughts, and the day-to-day stuff most men brush off. No experts, no preachy advice, no five-step solutions. Just real conversation about real feelings and the stupid sh*t going on in our heads. The message is simple: you are not alone. When you hear someone else say the thing you’ve quietly struggled with, it cuts through the noise and loneliness and makes your beautiful mess feel a bit more manageable. That’s what this show is for. Some of it is silly, some of it is uncomfortable, and some of it is painfully truthful – but it’s exactly the kind of honesty men aren’t taught to share. Where we've been - and what's going on | A quick update
Yeah we totally owe you an explanation. Blame geopolitics. And some other stuff. But we PROMISE we're back soon...ish. Soonish. It's still a promise.

How routine, fitness & rituals are helping us cope
Shaving your legs indirectly benefits your mental health...... isn't something many podcasts will claim, but somehow Tim indirectly links shaving his leg(s) – for real – with maintaining his mental health. Make of that what you will. This week, still working remotely for safety reasons, Tim & J catch up on how they've been coping with the ongoing regional conflict.Expect talk about working out, getting tetchy, emotional flatness, reaching the end of your tether, and finally Tim considers dabbling with an EMS experiment on-air...

Trying to manage anxiety during a regional conflict
Tim and J check in after a turbulent (and scary) week across the region. Instead of diving into geopolitics, they talk about the human side: anxiety, family life, sleepless nights, coping (or not coping), and the strange challenge of trying to stay normal while the world around you feels anything but.If you're feeling unsettled, anxious or scared and don't know who to talk to – please get in touch with us and we'll always listen:[email protected]: @manvsmindpod

What Does “Being Happy” Even Mean? | Man vs Happiness (Part One)
Happiness is...... blimey, screwed if we know. That's a massive question, and we probably bit off more than we could chew when we asked that.Today we start a bit of a deep dive into happiness. What's the difference between being in a good mood, and finding existential contentment?Told you we got deep.Plus, find out what our audience think happiness is (those that could bother to respond to our Instagram polls, anyway 😂)Part two of Happiness is coming next week!

How switching off autopilot changed us | Man vs Change
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes… but not the “moving house / new job” kind. This week, Tim and J talk about an unnerving kind of change: the mental shift from running on autopilot to actually feeling like the main character in your own life.J opens up about getting help after months of anxiety "stealing" his time – the work spirals, the constant “what if I panic?” loop, and what’s changed since meds and starting therapy (including the urge to “answer therapy correctly”… because obviously). Then Tim gets into what quitting smoking has unlocked: more friction, less reactive decision-making, more patience, and that strange lightbulb moment of realising “I’m in control here”. They get into dopamine, comfort habits, exercise “snacking”, sugar, and why progress doesn’t always feel dramatic – sometimes it just feels… quiet.(Themes include anxiety, addiction, medication, and therapy.)

What's "healthy"... and what's obsession? | Man vs Healthy
Okay this week Tim & J turned into proper hypochondriacs, and maybe conspiracy theorists – it's hard to tell these days. They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but what about when you're freaking out about every ache, pain, wheeze, whistle, localised numbness or random bit of bleeding? That might call for more than your run of the mill Grannie Smith. So the guys huddle up and try to untangle what “healthy” even means nowadays – real health vs “healthy” as a marketing tool, and the rise of health kicks that promise quick fixes and deliver new anxieties. They get into diets, smoking, sugar cravings, the GLP-1 boom (Ozempic, Wegovy, the lot), and how the word “healthy” has been hijacked and distorted into a guilt-ridden, expensive piece of abstract performative live art.And Tim completely loses it when he hears they stopped manufacturing Prozac to make more GLP-1 meds… which is either the most cynical thing you’ve ever heard, or the moment you realise we’re all living in a massive scam.If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Reach out (I'll be there) | Man vs Problems
This one is a bit ad-hoc. Because life gets in the way sometimes. As The Four Tops famously sang: Reach out, I'll be there, you can always depend on me. And those lyrics couldn't be more appropriate for Man vs Mind this week – when J's had a proper, proper, week of it. We go into why reaching out to a friend, a therapist, whoever, is the single best way of helping to manage your problems. (Oh, and why quitting smoking has made Tim feel like a 15 year old...) Vaping rewired my brain – but it didn't break me | Man vs Smoking
This week, Tim quit the tastiest coping mechanism you'll find on the streets today – vaping.Having been an on-off smoker for most of his adult life, it reached the point where it didn't feel like a choice anymore, and something needed to change. But for the sake of search/discoverability let's call it a New Year's Resolution...Quitting absolutely wrecked his head – and it still does. So in this catch up with J, Tim speaks candidly about it all: shame, loss of control, the uncomfortable truths and the mental health impact of rehabbing from addiction. And, crucially, it's about why he smoked in the first place. This episode talks about addiction, beyond just smoking/vaping, but there's nothing but empathy here from the guys 💙If you wanna get in touch and chat (with your privacy totally respected), please hit us up on Instagram @manvsmindpod – we promise we'll listen. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Why mental health isn’t something you ever finish | Man vs 2025
Woohoo it's a brand-new year, a brand-new season and the guys are audibly PUMPED to be back in the studio. Back with a fresh new sound for 2026, the guys take a bit of time to look back on how their mental health changed over the course of 2025. J speaks publicly for the first time on how ADHD treatment recently changed his life, Tim reveals the moment he realised he'll NEVER stop managing his mental health (note: this is very different from not trying), and the guys ask ChatGPT to explain how its seen them change over the past year...... and Tim was livid with what it said to J...Back to it, back with a bang(ing new soundtrack), back to attack 2026, and back with another one of those blockrockin' beats!Love you all, oh and get in touch plz k thx bye x If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Christmas | How to cope with the "most wonderful time of the year"
Christmas time, mistletoe and… panic attacks. In this festive episode of Man vs Mind, Tim and J get properly honest about Christmas – not just the cosy fairy lights version, but the pressure, money stress and forced fun that come with it. They talk about trying to keep the magic alive for their kids (and the emotional gymnastics of the whole Father Christmas lie), the logistics of in-laws and long-haul family politics, and why the build-up to the big day can feel heavier than the day itself. They get into Secret Santas, gift-giving anxiety, being skint in December, office Christmas music wars, broken trees, exploding lights, and that weird guilt that comes with presents you never use but can’t quite throw away. And, because it’s still Man vs Mind, they land on the small, quiet moments that actually make Christmas feel worth it – kids in terrible Christmas pyjamas, twinkly lights, croissants and coffee, and seeing how much the people you love love this time of year.Oh and Tim's radical idea for making Christmas more manageable for parents...There’s also a Patreon-only Man vs Mind Uncut bit after the main episode – no ads, and some extra chat. Man vs Identity | Are we ever truly ourselves… all of the time?
Can we ever be 100% unapologetically authentic all of the time?In this ep, Tim and J look back at the different versions of themselves they’ve tried on, and ask how much of it was real… and how much was playing along or trying to fit in?We all like to think we’re totally authentic throughout our lives. But were there moments where the mask slipped? Times we performed a bit, adapted a bit, acted a bit, or tried on a persona that didn’t quite fit?Expect stories about post-uni rebellion, ski season escapism, dabbling with corporate personas, ridiculously expensive wine, parenting authenticity, and the unexpectedly revealing new segment: Real or Superficial? Man vs School | Is that why we're messed up?
School. That smell of anxious teenage fear, disinfectant, plastic chairs and wooden floors. For many it invokes stress, more fear, anxiety, deep-seeded trauma. For others it was the time of their lives. Today, Tim & J introduce a new game to go through the highs and lows of school life, and how it shaped our adult selves: Formative or Traumative? From rogue teachers who really needed sacking, to years of bullying, the positive life experiences and the lifelong lessons learned about self-assurance, they go through it all... they needed a therapy cat in the room for this one.And in Man vs Mind Uncut – J tells us how a house party he went to as a teenager resulted in all of the house's doors getting lost... seriously. Man vs Anger | Why expressing anger can show you're emotionally healthy (sort of)
We all get angry. In context, controlled anger is normal, and a healthy expression of having a balanced state of mental health. But what about when that anger is disproportionate? What do you do if your day is ruined by stubbing your toe, or stepping in a puddle, or if someone cuts you up on your drive to work? Today, Tim & J go into the trials and tribulations of the Red Emotion. From outbursts to introspection, they explore the range of emotions that exist between pure happiness and a state of rage. Tim explains how he tries (tries) to keep a lid on the little things that wind him up, and how he does his best to take a beat and reflect when he can feel his blood pressure rising. J, meanwhile, is like a still breeze on an open lake. Just calm AF, baby. Except when there's a sandwich press nearby, then all hell breaks loose. Man vs Mood – is it possible to control how we're feeling?
Become a Friend of the Show on Patreon to listen to Man vs Mind Uncut (!) every single week... and without the annoying ads, all for just $5 a month! Click here to sign up todayI'm in the mooooood for [insert appropriate activity here].Today we're exploring why a good mood can feel suspicious to an anxious brain and how our state shifts across an ordinary day: from the joy of the school run to the hard switch back into dad mode after a day at work.Tim’s been on top of the world, and J’s smashing through a lesser-spotted productivity streak, so while they're both freakishly optimistic they decide to question it, and unpack mood triggers, how therapy and meds can widen the gap between feeling and reaction, and why refusing to let road-rage or stray comments set the tone can save your entire mood.We also revive our “fake it till you make it” experiment — not toxic positivity, just testing whether behaviour can nudge emotion without turning you into that insufferably chirpy colleague. Plus, there's a nod to spreading good vibes at work (through an unrelenting abundance of high-fives).Oh, and Lewis Capaldi, if you're listening, we'll give you a high-five mate.If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Taking a Break – why time off is essential for mind, body & soul
Sometimes you don’t need to take a flight. You just need five days where no one emails you. This week, Tim’s on annual leave – the holy grail of rest and recovery – except it’s somehow turned into a DIY bootcamp that's causing him and his wife too much anxiety. We’re talking all about what it really means to take a an actual break from at least one major responsibility. We go over the guilt, the need, and the bit where you realise “resting” often means doing all the jobs you’ve been putting off for six months. But hey, being a fully functioning adult is fun, isn't it... right? From burnout warning signs and therapy analogies to toddler chaos and varnishing planter boxes, this episode is a reminder that rest isn’t laziness — it’s maintenance.Elsewhere, Tim explains how he repeatedly ended up in hospital, J describes his dream break (surprise, the pub is involved) and to all you October Christmas music players: we see you, and J has a few choice words...If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Road Rage – why do we get so angry in the car?
In the words of the great Catatonia: you give me road rage.Who they sang about is anyone's guess. But as far as Tim's concerned, it's basically every other road user. Today, Tim & J give wildly contrasting opinions about attitudes towards their fellow drivers and what pure, unrelenting anger says about the broader state of their mental health. Does driving angry equal living angry? When (if ever) is it justifiable to drop the C-bomb at another driver? And what if there's nothing wrong with us, it's just that everyone else is an idiot?Meanwhile, Tim gets tailgated by a grannie on the A30 out of Cornwall; J gets banged up by, you guessed it, an idiot; Tim cries (again); and J has a traumatic week chasing copious amounts of bodily fluids, getting into a car accident, and getting taken to hospital in an incident that has nothing to do with the car crash. The Origin of a Mental Health Disorder – the day I stopped recognising myself
What happens when your mind suddenly turns against you?In this powerful episode of Man vs Mind, Tim shares the story of the day his life changed and his mental health collapsed – the exact moment that sparked nearly a decade of anxiety, self-doubt, and (eventually) recovery. From a life-altering mental breakdown at work to months of fear, depression, medical confusion, and a lost identity – this is the raw, unfiltered account of how one morning changed everything forever. It’s about vulnerability, diagnosis, therapy, medication, and the courage to finally ask for help.If you’ve ever felt “not yourself,” or wondered where your anxiety began, this episode is a must-listen.(Warning: This episode contains particularly strong language, and detailed descriptions of mental distress.)If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Help – Mark Rowland on why men struggle (and NEED) to open up | ft. Mental Health Foundation
Ahead of World Mental Health Day – 10 October, we sit down with Mark Rowland, CEO of the Mental Health Foundation, for an honest conversation about why men struggle to ask for help — and how we change that. Mark shares a deeply personal story that shaped his life’s work, and we dig into the cultural, generational and biological forces that keep men silent, the cost of staying on autopilot, and the payoff of doing the hard thing: vulnerability. We talk practicals — how to spot the signs you need support, the “safe first step” to opening up, what to do if you’re not ready to talk yet, and the mindset shift toward intention and psychological flexibility. We cover mates, families, workplaces and services; why strong relationships are the biggest protective factor; and how to move from minimising feelings to naming them and acting.Content note: This episode includes discussion of suicide and self-harm.Resources & Links• THAT film from Brighton & Hove Albion FC https://www.instagram.com/reel/DO0YkToDbAV/• Mental Health Foundation — initiatives and WMHD info: mentalhealth.org.uk• Contact us: [email protected] · Instagram @ManvsMindIf you’re struggling right now (UK): Samaritans 116 123 (free, 24/7). Man vs Space - Why we all need alone time, and what happens if we have too much?
We all need it — that little bit of personal space. Alone time. Breathing room. This week on Man vs Mind, Tim and J dive into the craving to just be left alone for a while. From panic attacks sparked by being constantly “on,” to carving out an hour to decompress after bedtime routines, they explore why personal space is essential — and what happens when you don’t get it.But can too much alone time tip into isolation? Is it a slippery slope into avoidance or even agoraphobia? The lads unpack the balance, the guilt, and the subtle line between restorative solitude and shutting yourself off from the world.Along the way:– Sandwiches, video games, and “prescribed” PlayStation therapy– Why partners often struggle to take space without guilt– How alone time shapes identity beyond parent/partner/employee roles– The extroverted introvert paradox– And the Non-Certified Therapy Club returns, with raw listener feedback on panic attacks, masculinity, and the models of modern masculinity (dad bods included). If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Anatomy of a Panic Attack: a break down of a breakdown
After a recent, explosive episode, we break down the anatomy of a panic attack. And, crucially, how to break out of one. What can set one off (stress, overstimulation, caffeine, loss of routine), what’s happening in your body and brain, and what it actually feels like in the moment.J shares a raw first-hand account of a huge attack that hit him during his recent travels – from racing heartbeat and pins-and-needles to the unshakable feeling of “I’m dying”.Then there are the aftershocks: how the fear of it happening again can make it happen again, the avoidance traps we fall into, and why anxiety is sticky until we reach the deeper why.We also cover practical tools to break the cycle — grounding, paced breathing, and the cold-water/ice-cube reset — and how the ideal First Responder helped walk J out of it all unscathed (relatively). If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Money – Part Three: How we tore down our finances (and reduced stress)
Why does getting control of money feel like such a weight off your shoulders? In Part 3 of our Money mini-series, Tim takes you through the painstaking breakdown of his finances: line-by-line audits, subscription purges, disaster funds, bulk-buy planning, and the relief of finally having a monthly strategy. We dig into:Why a lack of control fuels money anxietyHow systems and habits ease the stressThe gaping hole in financial education — was that neglect, or design? The debt spiral of credit cards, interest-only payments, payday loansWhy the system feels rigged, and how to fight backHow to actually teach kids (and yourself) money disciplineDisclaimer: We’re sharing personal experience — not financial advice. Man vs Money – Part Two: Why nobody ever talks about money...
Money is one of the biggest causes of stress in our lives — yet it’s the one thing we almost never talk about openly. In Part Two of the Man vs Money mini-series, Tim and J dig into the taboo of talking about finances, why we go silent when asked about money, and how cultural differences shape whether we’re open or closed about it.From social pressure to “keep up,” to the shame of saying “I can’t afford it,” and the awkwardness of borrowing from family or friends, this episode explores how money impacts friendships, marriages, and self-worth.Tim opens up about having to borrow from his parents, J shares the struggles of surviving gatherings with nothing in the bank, and both reflect on the mental load of finances when raising kids.We also hear some unforgettable stories — from car rental disasters to near-death work trips in the US — and why even “good” financial news can be hard to share with friends. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Money – Part One: When are our attitudes to money formed?
It's the start of a new mini-series, and this is a big, devisive, tabooish, and expensive one: money. The root of all evil today, or so they say. Today, J and Tim get stuck into our early perceptions of money: our younger years exposure to money, how it shaped out attitudes towards it, and what it means to have (or not to have...) the coin. Does not having money encourage you to graft, to work harder and harder? Or is it traumatising? For many people, it's both. And the lads go into their earliest or most significant financial traumas in quite unflinching detail. We know it's taboo, but we'll be running loads of polls on this over on our Instagram account (@manvsmindpod) because money plays such an ENORMOUS role in mental health - for so many people. Man vs Spiralling - Why do we overthink EVERYTHING?
You're not the only one who overthinks, who spirals, who obsesses over that argument or the funny look someone gave you after you cracked a "joke".Today, Tim & J go over the "Oh my god if only I said that..." or the "jeeeez, what did that look mean? Did I just say something terrible? What if I've mortally offended them? It was just a joke, I didn't mean anything by it – so why did they look at me like that? What's wrong with me? What does that say about me as a person?"...oh wait... it was actually fine. And it's a return of the Non-Certified Therapy Club. Man vs Envy - avoiding the comparison trap
Why do we compare ourselves to others? And how can you stop feeling like everyone else is doing better than you? Sometimes it’s hard to avoid feeling like everyone else is smashing life while you’re… well, just... existing. This week, Tim and J dive headfirst into the comparison trap: the ways we measure ourselves against friends, colleagues, influencers, and sometimes complete strangers – and how envy quietly eats away at our contentment. We talk social media feeds engineered to prey on insecurity, the workplace moments that trigger “why not me?”, and why validation feels good in person but dangerous online. There’s also stag do culture, AI shortcuts, body image insecurities, and Shakespeare’s 400-year-old take on the whole thing.Hopefully, you'll see this as a reminder that the most valuable things we’ve got can’t be measured or compared. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Burnout - Managing burnout and preventing its impact on mental health
The burnout is real, and Tim's therapist (and Alexa, apparently) warned him it might happen...Today, we're chatting all about what burnout actually is, how it feels, and how we're trying to combat the effect that burning out has on mental health. Feeling neither happy nor sad, going through the motions, getting a bit downtrodden, and feeling sort of meh. It's all part of it, and it can happen to anyone - so we're here to give you a little friendly nudge and say "keep your eyes peeled", because it'll creep up on you. Elsewhere, Tim gets confused about homoerectus and J gets equally confused about anemones, before (again) asking if we can take Man vs Mind on a bodacious, excellent time travel adventure...So buckle up. If you're feeling like you can't put your finger on how you're feeling, if you're asking "am I burnt out? Do I have burnout?" then listen up.If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Ageing – Part Four: The joys of getting older (ft. our dads)
We’ve pulled out all the stops for the final part of our Ageing mini‑series. This one’s a proper journey – funny, raw, honest and genuinely inspiring.Tim and J dive into the worst bits of getting older – the aches, the slowing down, back pain and that constant feeling of being more tired than you’d like. But then we flip it: wisdom, perspective, self‑assurance, joy in everyday life, and the privilege of seeing your kids grow up while knowing you’re never past it.And then… J’s Dad.We’ve taken his voice note and given it a full remix – poignant, uplifting, and honestly one of the most inspiring things we’ve ever put out. It’s the perfect way to end the series.Thank you for all your messages, your stories, your honesty. Man vs Ageing – Part Three: Slowing down the moments that matter
Birthdays aren’t always cake and candles.Sometimes they’re a spotlight you never asked for – a reminder of another year gone by, a quiet tally of who still cares enough to show up, or just a day that sparks a rush of awkward gratitude when all you really want is a sofa and some peace. In this episode, Tim and J dive into how our relationship with birthdays changes as we get older, and how those yearly milestones can trigger big questions about where we are in life. They also look back at moments they’d revisit in a heartbeat – some they’d handle differently, others they’d stay in forever. If you’ve ever wondered why your birthday feels different these days, or caught yourself longing to time‑travel back to a moment that felt perfect, you’re in the right place. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Ageing – Part Two: Is it possible to slow down time?
Is it just us, or is time absolutely sprinting lately? Like, seriously, chill out please Father Time.In Part Two of our ageing mini-series, Tim and J try to get their heads around the weird acceleration of life. Why do the years feel shorter the older we get? Is it all the responsibility? The anxiety? Or just the fact that school summers used to feel like forever? We talk memory, mindfulness, the effects of mental health on how we experience time – and whether it’s actually possible to slow it all down. (Spoiler: J won’t be meditating any time soon.)Then, it’s time to dig out your emotional playlists for a section we’re calling The Soundtrack of our Lives – the songs that instantly transport us back. From Barbie Girl to Muse, to Tim’s wedding night (steady), we explore how music holds memories tighter than our brains ever could. Check out the playlist so far on Spotify in the link below. And finally, Tim tells a story. A real one. About his dad, a fishing trip, and a man who could very well have been a time-travelling Tim... bear with us... Man vs Ageing – Part One: The (old) man in the mirror
Who’s that old, tired man staring back from the bathroom mirror? Oh wait – it’s us.In the first part of our Man vs Ageing mini-series, Tim and J face the creeping signs of getting older – dodgy knees, deepening eye bags, shifting friendships, and the subtle emotional wobble that comes when your face starts to match how you feel.We talk about how our bodies have changed since becoming dads, how our social circles have naturally narrowed, and what it feels like to question whether you’re ageing “well” – or just ageing. We also trail what’s coming up in the series – the passing of time, the music that shaped us, milestone moments, and the idea that ageing doesn’t have to be a decline… it could be an evolution. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Phones - Why can't we just switch off?
In this episode of Man vs Mind, we dive headfirst into our love/hate relationship with our phones. Are we addicted? Dependent? Or just trying to stay afloat in a digital tsunami of pings, pings, and more pings?Tim and J talk screen time shame, notification anxiety, and that weird little dopamine hit you get from absolutely nothing at all. We ask: what are we avoiding when we scroll? Can we even remember the last time we were truly bored? And how the hell do we balance being present dads with being on-call humans 24/7?Plus, we talk digital detoxes, bedtime routines, childhood screen time, and the sheer terror of being left alone with your own thoughts. We even consider a no-phone challenge. Also featuring: Zoiks, old BlackBerrys, the term “soporific”, and a return to the Non-Certified Therapy Club™.If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Travelling with kids, getting old, and J's self-imposed misery
From grounded flights to forest poos, the lads regroup after a chaotic week of travel, jet lag, and existential creaks in the knees. In today's Man vs Mind, Tim checks in from the UK while J’s stuck in Dubai after a last-minute trip gets grounded. What follows is a catch-up of two knackered dads trying (and mostly failing) to switch off – featuring overheated bedrooms, eerie city roads, toddler tantrums, and the very real stress of being nearly 40 but already falling to pieces.J talks about his body’s growing refusal to function after a daring soft play incident, prompting the start of a brand new challenge – getting a PT and seeing what happens when two very average men try to reclaim their physical fitness (and pride). We also introduce a new idea: the Non-Certified Therapy Club – a safe space for you to vent what’s been bugging you, physically or mentally, so we can share the load.Oh, and here's the link to our mention in Esquire this week 😍If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Stress - how everyday pressure can slowly cook your brain
What actually is stress? Is it a full-blown anxiety spiral – or just the slow drip of life admin, wet socks, and toddler tantrums that wear you down? This week on Man vs Mind, Tim and J dig into the chaos. From the boiling point of financial pressure to work mistakes and coffee machines that just won’t shut up, they unpack how modern stress shows up – and why we’re all so bloody bad at talking about it. There’s a little therapy, a lot of laughter, and even a brand-new game today: Stress Factor. They also get real about controlling what you can, walking away when you need to, and the simple power of saying “I’ve messed up.” Plus: meditation, disaster scenario planning, Peppa Pig interventions, and one very stressed-out toothbrushing situation. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Focus - you're not the only one getting distracted
Got distracted halfway through writing this description. Which is fitting, really – because this week, it’s Man vs Focus. From childhood ADHD and adult procrastination, to multitasking meltdowns, hyperfocus hijacks, and the fine art of not doing your coursework until the literal night before (or just… getting drunk instead) – Tim and J go deep into the mess of modern attention. They talk about growing up with dyslexia, the wild energy of untamed thought spirals, and how anxiety throws order out the window. There’s also some love for cooking, quiet office pods, fidget beads, and the eternal search for silence that doesn’t feel like a vacuum.Whether you’ve ever forgotten what you were doing mid-task, or just find yourself Googling “Do I have ADHD or am I just tired?” – this one’s for you. Man vs Awareness - Do they really know what's going on?
This one was tough to record – so buckle in.In honour of Men’s Mental Health Month, we’re talking about what awareness really means – not just in the way people see you, but in the way you see yourself. We open up about the stuff we rarely say out loud – the grief that lingers for years, the anxiety attacks that hit like a truck, the everyday pressures that build quietly until they don’t. There are moments in this episode where we both come close to breaking, and maybe that’s the point: awareness isn’t always obvious. Sometimes it’s hidden in tiredness, stress, snappiness, silence. We ask: could we have seen it coming? Could we have spoken sooner? Could we have heard what our own minds were trying to tell us?It’s not always easy listening – but it’s real. And if something here sounds familiar, that’s exactly why we made it.If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Fear - revealing our deepest phobias
Fear. It creeps up in the dead of night, in dentist chairs, on balconies 65 floors up, and sometimes… in the form of your dad pranking you with a dead snake. In this episode, Tim and J dive headfirst into the irrational, the existential, and the unexpectedly hilarious world of fear – from man-made heights and dental trauma, to the call of the void **ominous music** and the terrifying thought of raising kids in a hyper-masculine world. They swap stories about escape room breakdowns, seaside shark realisations, and listener-submitted fears (spoiler: you’re not alone in being afraid of open water or people thinking you’re fake). It’s funny, raw, and occasionally heart-thumpy.Oh, and we talk about a guy who says that it's not "manly" to **checks notes** eat soup...Key themes:– Fear as a motivator– Irrational vs rational fear– Parenting and provider anxiety– Panic attacks and mental health– Weird listener confessions– Why clowns are the absolute worstIf you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Tiredness - rewiring our brains using this simple hack
This week, we’re knackered – we’re documenting it in real time, and we're trying to hack our brains into thinking we're not actually tired. Is that a thing?Well, it's based on absolutely zero scientific evidence except our own self-inflicted guinea pig trials. So let's see.Armed with a week’s worth of voice notes, J and Tim set out to fake energy until we feel it for real… but what we uncovered was something deeper. Why do our brains feel wired at 3am when we’re already maxed out? Why does stillness send us into shutdown? And what is tiredness actually trying to tell us?This one’s part experiment, part confession, part existential yawn.Let’s learn the language of fatigue together.Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Drinking - How much is too much?
Why do we drink? Is it fun? Habit? Celebration? Escape? Or just because saying no feels like social sabotage? In this episode of Man vs Mind, we take on alcohol – starting with the stupid (like Danger Can, a game involving a shaken can of beer and your forehead) and moving into the emotional. Tim shares stories of stress-fuelled nights that spiralled, including one that ended with crying, lost possessions, and a body covered in Spicey McChickens. J opens up about how drinking became a bit of a bad habit in his early parenting years, and how he’s had to rethink what it means to be present. We talk about drinking culture, why guys still beer pressure each other to stay for “just one more,” and how alcohol can often be the only time men feel comfortable opening up.In the second half, Tim shares how he’s become increasingly anxious about going out at all, and fears abandonment from his mates. And J struggles to describe the kind of bar they both avoid now: “a dance pub… no, not a club… but like… a trendy bar… you know what I mean.”Oh and J stops Tim dead in his tracks (and the show...) with a bit of unexpected Cockney Rhyming Slang...Disclaimer: while we had a lot of fun recording this episode, we appreciate that alcohol is a very sensitive subject for many people around the world. Man vs Body Image (Part 3 – Acceptance)
This week, we wrap up our Body Image mini-series with a deep dive into the things we do to feel better about ourselves — the gym routines, the crash diets, the attempts to get back control when we feel like we've lost it.We ran a poll asking what your coping mechanisms are. Most of you said restrictive dieting. Some said intense workouts. And a glorious 20% just went “meh, not bothered.” You are our heroes. Teach us.We also answer your AMA questions:Would we let our parents listen to this? (Uncomfortable.)What’s the most extreme thing we’ve done to look better? (Tim’s answer is… a lot.)How do you balance work, food, fitness, and raising a small human? (Short answer: you don’t. And that’s fine.)We talk mental health, cosmetic surgery, gym, and why the term “transformation” might not mean what you think it does. We wrap up with a few honest thoughts on acceptance — not the fluffy kind, just the type that lets you eat beige food with your kids without beating yourself up about it.And yes, Average Man is back. Man vs Body Image (Part 2 – External Validation)
If there’s a better way to get back at your school bully than by inadvertently hooking up with his sister… we haven’t found it yet.It goes without saying (but we’ll say it anyway) that this week’s episode contains adult themes and strong language. This week, we’re diving into the messy world of external validation — where it starts, why we chase it, and how it ends up quietly shaping our perception of body image, and how we see ourselves. From school bullies, to the Instagram comparison trap, and realising how much a small bit of kindness can actually mean — we’re getting into all of it.We also share an incredible listener story about overcoming body image struggles, self-sabotage, and finding their way back to self-acceptance.It’s a heavy one in parts, but there’s plenty of laughter too — because if you can’t laugh at yourself...As usual, disclaimer: we're not psychologists or psychiatrists, nor do we have anything to sell. We're just two guys who think this sort of thing doesn't get spoken about enough, and it silently damages us all.We hope you enjoy this episode in the way it was intended: a little bit of sincere introspection, that helps other guys realise they're not alone, with a few laughs chucked in along the way.Big love,Tim & JxIf you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Man vs Body Image (Part 1 – Physical Insecurity)
The first of a four-part mini-series. Let’s take a look in the mirror. After taking The First Step in Episode 1 and learning to open up in Man vs Talking (Episode 2), this week we kick off a brand new four-part mini-series on something a lot of us quietly battle with: body image. In Part 1, we’re looking inward — the stuff we carry about how we see ourselves. From childhood bullying and emotional eating, to gym floor anxiety and the pressures we put on ourselves just to feel “okay” in our own skin. There’s also talk of therapy (specifically EMDR), weight as a trigger, and the surprisingly emotional journey that is trying (and failing) not to eat your father-in-law’s ice cream. Also, Tim gets tangled up in lycra, has an epiphany mid-warmup, and a very awkward towel-based Instagram locker room encounter with a topless influencer sparks a surprising realisation.Get in touch! Man vs Talking
Why is it easier to slap your mate on a stag do than tell him you’re struggling? In this episode of Man vs Mind, Tim and J get into the weird world of male vulnerability—from awkward networking events and silent commutes to the emotional gymnastics of saying “Yeah not too bad.”There’s chat about shame, office euphemisms, and why asking for help feels harder than public speaking.Get in touch with us! Man vs The First Step
In this episode of Man vs Mind, Tim and J get stuck into the messy, honest stuff around male mental health—anxiety, therapy, ADHD, body image, emotional eating, and why it’s so hard for blokes to just say, “I’m struggling.”They talk about starting new jobs, navigating fatherhood, dyslexia, medication, and why silence can sometimes say more than words. Oh—and J casually drops the time he found himself at gunpoint in India during a breakdown. Because, of course he did. It’s part confessional, part group chat energy, and part “wait, why does no one talk about this?” If you’ve ever felt like you’re the only one trying to hold it together, this one’s for you.If you feel like a bit of support would help, please check out and consider supporting the wonderful work they do at CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably). If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! ABOUT THIS SHOW
Man vs Mind is a brutally honest, often funny, and always relatable men’s mental health podcast about the things men feel but rarely talk about.Tim and J are two ordinary blokes trying to make sense of their own heads – anxiety, anger, confidence, fatherhood, stress, medication, relationships, intrusive thoughts, and the day-to-day stuff most men brush off.
