046 • Tough Cookie: Sweet Dani B On Spreading Joy In A Messy World
Sweet Dani B doesn’t just make cookies… she makes whimsical, edible works of art that are full of joy, personality, and a whole lot of ❤️🍪👀In this episode, I’m joined by celebrity cookie artist and Emmy award winning set and prop stylist Dani Boglivi-Fiori, aka Sweet Dani B. Local Jersey friends, you already know… and if you don’t, you’re about to 😏! We get into what it really looks like to build a business that feels like you from the inside out. From her background in the fashion world and working on The Martha Stewart Show to building her own cookie studio here at the Jersey Shore, Dani shares how creativity, values, and personality have shaped every step of her journey. She’s taught thousands how to decorate cookies and have so much fun doing it!And yes… with her fashion industry background, I had to ask:Just how real is The Devil Wears Prada? 👀But beyond the cookies (which are life-changing, literally), what makes Dani’s brand stand out is how clearly she stands in what she believes. We talk about using your voice as a business owner, speaking up about what matters to you, and the reality that your business doesn’t have to be for everyone. In fact, it's not supposed to be.Dani shares how her involvement in things like the Women’s March shaped how she shows up, how she navigates the tension between joy and real-life heaviness, and how she continues to spread love even when the world feels chaotic. Cuz people need it.✨ In this episode, we talk about:How Dani turns cookies into art (like… actual art) 🍪Her path from Rhode Island School of Design to Ralph Lauren to entrepreneurshipWorking behind the scenes on The Martha Stewart Show (and winning an Emmy 👀)The reality of running a creative business in unpredictable timesSaying no to things that don’t feel aligned (even if they make money)Using your platform to share your values and beliefsWhy your business doesn’t have to be “for everyone”Why your business is allowed to evolve as you doBurnout, boundaries, and shifting how your business operates... we love a pivot these days! There’s art. There’s activism. There’s googly eyes. There’s a brief but important Muppet moment. It’s all here in episode 46 with Sweet Dani B. 045 • Feral Girl Energy: Editor Amy Tipton Loves Lit, Hates Tech, & Wants You to Stay Weird
Amy Tipton doesn’t do business the “normal” way. That’s kind of the whole point. In this episode, I’m joined by Amy Tipton, founder of Feral Girl Books, and someone who truly embodies what it means to build a business that actually feels like you. We talk about her punk-inspired brand, her zine-style physical newsletter (yes, actual mail!), and how she’s carved out a creative path that works for her… even while actively avoiding most tech.We also get into her background as a literary agent, the story of how she suffered a stroke and how it reshaped her relationship with work and time, and why she’s so passionate about accessibility, marginalized voices, and doing things differently in a very traditional industry. This one is real, a little chaotic in the best way, and full of personality. Just how we like it.✨ In this episode, we talk about:The origin story behind Feral Girl Books and its punk/DIY aestheticHow her stroke changed her perspective on work, time, and prioritiesAccessibility gaps in everyday spaces and why they matterThe reality of running a business when you don’t love tech (or AI!)Creating a physical, mailed-out newsletter instead of using emailThe role of personality, pop culture, and personal taste in branding& lots more! 044 • My In-Between Era: Is Your Biz Shifting, Too?
After recently celebrating my first full year of podcasting, I kiiiiinda disappeared for a bit. 😬There was no big announcement or “Season 2” being whipped up behind the scenes. But life was (IS!!!) life-ing. In personal ways. In business ways. In world ways. So I just paused. And if I'm being honest, it’s been reallyyyy hard to market a business lately. There are some absolutely terrible things happening in the world. Injustice. Violence. People who can’t afford groceries. People who can’t pay rent. It can feel absolutely trivial and meaningless to talk about branding and websites and launches when the headlines are this heavy.I've genuinely wondered (often) if I should say anything at all.But something my therapist reminds me often is this: two things can be true at the same time:The world can feel like a nightmare. And your work can still matter. In this episode, I’m sharing what’s been happening behind the scenes in my own business. I hosted a Zoom recently called:“WTF Is This Biz Season?! 🥴 A Chat for Women in Our ‘Figuring It Out’ Era”And the recurring theme in that room was this:We still want our businesses. We’re just kinda lost and reflecting and sitting with these feelings.“I’m not trying to hit 7 figures. I’m just trying to figure it out.”This episode is me pulling back the curtain a little.I talk about:Why I took a few months off from podcastingThe tension of building a business when the world feels heavyFeeling “between versions” of yourselfLetting some things sunset while others start to sproutChoosing flow over forcePersistency over consistencyWhat it feels like to sense change before you can name itI don’t have a polished plan. I don’t have a big pivot reveal. But I absolutely know that something is shifting. And maybe you feel it too.If you’re in your own in-between era… if your biz feels different… if your energy feels different… if you’re stretching but don’t know what you’re stretching toward yet…You’re not alone. Trust me!Join The Forward-ish Club 🐌If this episode resonates, I’d love to invite you into The Forward-ish Club. It’s a free encouragement circle for business owners who are choosing to stay in the game. Messy but moving. You’ll get:Gentle email check-insEncouragementPerspectiveAn optional private Instagram group chatIt’s for women who still want this. Even if things feel chaotic. 041 • The Action-Taker Mindset: Creative Growth and Experimenting Your Way Forward with Wish Upon a Jar’s Laurelyn Pearson
Happy Giving Tuesday, friends! 🎉There is no better guest for today than my girl Laurelyn Pearson from Wish Upon a Jar in Point Pleasant, NJ - because generosity, community, and heart are literally painted into everything she does.Wish Upon a Jar is not just a paint-your-own pottery studio. It is a creativity playground. A cozy little universe where kids, grownups, families, first-timers, and nostalgia lovers walk in as strangers and leave feeling like part of the crew. And yes, their two studio pups, Irwin and Draco, are basically the welcoming committee. Prepare to fall in love.Giving back is a huge part of their studio values. Wish Upon a Jar regularly raises money for local animal rescues, supports charities in the community, and helps customers host their own fundraisers right inside the studio. So releasing this episode on Giving Tuesday felt extra right. 🖤🐾This conversation is so good. It is fun, honest, nerdy, creative, a little chaotic, and full of heart. We talk about why Laurelyn and Matt have such a strong action-taker mindset, how saying yes to experiments can unlock huge wins, and how building a business without a rulebook can create the most unexpected magic. We also detour through Squishmallows, Hocus Pocus, Schitt’s Creek, K-pop Demon Hunters, Jimmy Fallon, Bluey, kid stories, studio mishaps, community love, and how art somehow becomes therapy when you aren’t looking. 🎨🔥✨ Inside this episode you’ll hear:What an action-taker mindset actually looks like in real lifeHow Laurelyn and Matt leap first, learn fast, and let experimentation lead the wayThe role creativity plays in healing, confidence, and communityHow Wish Upon a Jar became a safe and joyful space for every kind of makerWhy the studio pups, Irwin and Draco, are essential to the Wish experienceThe heart behind all of their animal charity fundraisersHow accessibility and kindness shape every decision at the studioWhy adults need creativity and play as much as kidsStories from the studio that will make you smile so big your face hurts🎨🖌 Check out Wish Upon a JarIG: https://www.instagram.com/wishuponajarnjWebsite: https://wishuponajarnj.comGive them a follow, send them some Giving Tuesday love, and help support the causes they uplift all year long. 037 · A Little Salty, a Little Stabby, a Lotta Bowie: How Katie Us Sets the Vibe at Kismet Acupuncture
Ever felt pressure to tone it down in your business? Ya know, be “professional,” blend in, or soften those edges, blah blah blahhhhh. Well, if you need that permission slip to go full YOU, today's guest is bringing it.In episode 37, I’m joined by my longtime client and friend, Katie Us, L.Ac., Dipl. Ac. and owner of Kismet Acupuncture & Apothecary in Kenilworth, NJ. Katie’s a licensed acupuncturist in four states (NJ, NY, PA, and LA) and the creative force behind one of the most personality-packed wellness brands you’ll ever see... complete with a hot-pink door, lightning bolt murals, David Bowie energy, salty signage, and a whole lot of her bad-ass heart. She even has merch!!!We chat about what it means to show up authentically as a business owner and why being unapologetically yourself is what attracts the right people AND repels the wrong ones (insert cat hiss and middle fingers here). Katie also opens up about her approach to community, transparency, mental health, and how her bold brand has helped her patients find a safe, welcoming space for healing: physically, emotionally, and energetically. In this episode, we talk about:✨ How Katie creates the signature Kismet vibe... from the rainbow doormat at the entrance, to the incense and tea and tunes, and those amazing "acu-naps"✨ The story behind her famous “Just lemme stab you, you’re gonna love it” slogan✨ Why branding with personality matters (and why “beige tranquility” isn’t for everyone)✨ Building an inclusive, values-driven practice that aligns with Katie's heart✨ The importance of transparency, mental-health advocacy, and being real online✨ Her new pelvic-floor certification and how she’s expanding her offerings✨ The Bowie-inspired energy that fuels everything she doesOver the years, so many wellness brands and practitioners have found their way to me because of the design and marketing work I’ve done with Katie and I’ll never stop being grateful for that. 🖤 What started as one truly unique website project quickly blossomed into many more creative collaborations with an acu/punk rock twist. And all of that has led to a ripple effect of heart-led businesses wanting to show up more authentically. This episode feels like a full-circle moment to talk with the person who helped me carve out a lil' unexpected niche I love so much, all because she had the guts to build a brand that looks and feels unapologetically her. 036 • Where I’ve Been (and an Invitation)
It’s been a minute since my last ep. Over 30 days, actually! Eek. So today’s episode is a little different... more of a catch-up and a lil' heart-to-heart.I’m sharing what the last month has really looked like for me — from getting knocked off my usual rhythm, to the messy mix of feelings that come with running a business while also being human. I’ll talk about some of the projects I’ve been chipping away at behind the scenes, what’s been energizing me, and what’s been weighing on me.And I’m also sharing an invitation: a new idea I’ve been dreaming up for solopreneurs who are committed to staying in the game — even when progress is imperfect. If you’ve been craving encouragement and accountability without the pressure to have it all figured out, I hope you'll tune in to learn about my experiment. This episode is off-the-cuff and cozy. 035 • Puppies, Promises, & Positioning Statements: Branding That Builds Trust with Kathy Guillory
If you’ve been hanging around these parts for a while, you have definitely heard about the “know / like / trust” factor… i.e., people buy from people and brands that they know, like, and trust. And these days, with that “trust recession” buzzword flying around all over, it’s more crucial than ever. Marketing only works if people do actually trust you with their time, their money, and even their furry family members! And that’s what today’s conversation with Kathy Guillory is all about.Kathy is the founder of Belle Bear Marketing, where she works as a fractional CMO helping multi-location, consumer-facing businesses (especially brands in the pet care world) stop wasting money and get super clear on their brand positioning. She’s got 20+ years of experience in strategy and digital transformation, but what I love is how down-to-earth and real she is about marketing not being smoke and mirrors — it’s about clarity and making promises you can actually keep.In this episode 35 of Mind Your Own Biz, Kathy and I dig into:🐾 Why positioning statements matter way more than most people realize🧼 Kathy’s take on what responsible marketing really means (“great jeans / great genes”… yep, we’re going there #americaneagle)💸 The sneaky ways small businesses waste money on marketing (and how to stop doing that!)🤝 Why trust is the through-line in everything, from pet care to multi-location growth and moreThis one’s part strategy session, part values check-in, and full of gems about building a brand that actually walks its talk and wags its tail.🔗 Connect with Kathy: bellebearmarketing.comBtw, for anyone feeling buried in admin stuff, grab my free guide: “VA 101: How to Reclaim Your Time by Hiring a Virtual Assistant”. 034 • Hold, Please: The Pen, The Pause, and The Messy Middle with Deb Cooperman
Sometimes there’s a season (or seasons) in life and biz where the old thing is over, the new thing kinda isn’t here yet, and you’re just marinating in the middle. No map, no deadlines. Just you, your thoughts, and maybe a pen (or lotsa voice notes)? My point is: Sometimes life hits pause for you, and you may stay there longer than you expected. That’s the space where today's convo takes place.Deb Cooperman and I first met back in my past life working in the arts marketing world, and I’ve admired her work (and her fab way with words) ever since. She’s a writer, facilitator, and recovering marketing pro who has a gift for helping people reconnect with their voices through writing. In this episode, we talk about the messy middle: that uncertain stretch where the plan goes out the window, life shifts in big ways, and you’re figuring out what comes next.Deb shares how journaling has been a lifeline for self-trust, processing, and reconnecting with her creativity after stepping away from her work during a major life transition. We dig into the pressure to “bounce back,” the power of slowing down, and the value of sitting with the discomfort of not knowing. We get into:why writing can unlock things talking can’tgiving yourself permission to not have all the answersembracing uncertainty without rushing to fix itredefining work and success in a new seasonshowing up honestly, even when it’s messyDeb is an old friend, and this convo was extra-special to record. We’re really just acknowledging something we all go through at some point: not having the answers, not knowing what’s next, and learning to be okay with that. It’s a reminder that uncertainty is part of life, and giving ourselves permission to simply be in that uncomfortable space is sometimes the best thing we can do.EPISODE NOTE: Since we talked, Deb says she's gotten a little clearer on where she's headed with her work. She says it might look a little different, but the heart of it is the same as it has been: still about helping women reconnect with their voices through writing. "It's never really been about teaching craft, but it's becoming clearer that the women I work with are using words to reclaim what the world asked us to hide in the name of being agreeable, good, selfless, and just generally focused on making others happy." Her original plan to get back to offering workshops by year’s end will be pushed back a bit more, but you can find plenty of writing support on her blog, and you can find out when she's back up and running by signing up for her newsletter on her website, or following her (sporadic) storytelling on Instagram.Links mentioned in this episode:👩💻 Book your 1:1 Empower Hour session with me: https://alyciayerves.com/empowerhour👥 Join my free Facebook group for entrepreneurs: https://www.facebook.com/groups/helpdeskalyciayerves🎵 Deb’s “Manifesto” playlist that makes her feel like she can do anything: Listen here📚 Tori Dunlap (podcaster & author of Financial Feminist): herfirst100k.com🌿 Kerstin Martin (founder & educator at Calm Business): calmbusiness.comConnect with Deb Cooperman:🌐 debcooperman.com📸 @thedebcooperman on InstagramListener Q&A: Got a question you’d love me to answer on a future episode?
