More Movement Please

I walked into my first Zumba class and lasted 15 minutes before I had to leave because I couldn't breathe. I couldn't do a single jumping jack. I couldn't hold a plank. I was using 5-pound dumbbells and calling them my "big weights."That was August 2023. Today? 400+ group fitness classes. 26 pounds down. I'm using 15-pound dumbbells, taking multiple classes in a day, and chasing those 20-pounders that keep haunting me from across the weight rack.I'm Famous Ashley Grant, and More Movement Please is my fitness podcast — a digital diary from a woman over 40 who got tired of wishing she was stronger and finally did something about it. I record most of these episodes in my car on the way to and from the gym, so they're quick (5-10 minutes), honest, and easy to binge. Think of me as your workout buddy who keeps it real. This show is part accountability, part education, part inspiration. I talk about beginner fitness tips, gym motivation, what to do when you sleep throu

36,477 Steps: What Gen Con Taught Me About How Far My Body Has Come

Just two years ago, walking a convention floor for five days straight would have wrecked me. This year I logged over 36,000 steps at Gen Con, the world's biggest tabletop gaming convention, and actually enjoyed every minute of it. In this episode I break down what four days of nonstop walking and standing felt like in my body now versus then, why I noticed swollen ankles on other convention goers and felt for them, and what this trip taught me about building real stamina instead of chasing a number on a scale. If you've ever skipped a trip or an event because you weren't sure your body could handle it, this one is for you. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. Why Strength Training Now Could Save You From a Broken Hip Later

What if the exercises you skip today are the reason you can't get off the floor at 70? Chiropractor and strength specialist Dr. Matt Tanneberg breaks down exactly why muscle strength and balance training aren't optional as we age, they're what keeps you upright, steady, and able to catch yourself before a fall turns into a fracture. In this episode, Dr. Tanneberg explains how single leg exercises, yoga, tai chi, and qigong build the coordination and stability that protect your joints and bones for the long haul. He also breaks down what's actually happening inside your body when you strengthen your tendons and ligaments, and why that "clicking" or achy joint feeling often traces back to weak connective tissue you can train. This one will change how you think about every workout you do from here on out. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. Two Extremes That Make Pain Worse (And What To Do Instead)

Think avoiding pain or pushing through it are your only two options? What if we told you both approaches backfire, and the real answer is something else? In this More Movement Please takeover episode, physical therapist and pain science educator Jen Uschold breaks down why movement matters so much for people navigating chronic pain. She explains the two extremes that tend to make pain worse (total avoidance and the "no pain, no gain" mindset), and introduces pacing and graded exposure as the middle path that actually helps your nervous system calm down. Jen shares how something as small as one or two minutes of walking can be a real starting point, plus a story about a client who went from that tiny first step to hiking across three continents. If you've ever felt stuck between doing nothing and doing too much, this episode might just change how you think about moving your body. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. What Babies Know About Movement That We Forgot

Babies never worry about how their bodies look. They just eat when they're hungry, stop when they're full, and move because it feels good. In this episode, Ashley shares a voice note from Shirley Billigmeier, founder of Energetics, who breaks down why we're born knowing exactly how to listen to our bodies, and how life slowly teaches us to ignore that wisdom. Shirley talks about trusting your own signals over outside noise, why nutrition research keeps flip-flopping, and how reconnecting with your natural instincts can bring the joy back into eating and moving. Ashley adds her own take on how small daily choices, like what you pack for a road trip, train your brain toward better habits over time. Fit-ology founder Jessica Covington joins More Movement Please to explain why movement is actually brain care, boosting focus, mood, and motivation in ways that have nothing to do with changing how you look.Listen as Jessica breaks down the connection between movement and the brain's dopamine and motivation networks, and why even one minute of moving can shift your mental state before a hard task. How Judgmental Fitness Content Hurts Beginners (Even When It's Not About Them)

Ever wonder why online fitness spaces can feel so judgmental, even when all you're trying to do is move more? In this episode, guest host Domenic Angelino, who lost over 130 pounds and now holds two master's degrees in exercise science and psychology, breaks down a side effect of toxic fitness culture most creators never think about.Domenic explains how hostile, status driven fitness content doesn't just affect the people watching it directly. It trains people to bring that same harsh energy into other fitness spaces, comment sections, and conversations, making the whole online fitness world feel less safe for beginners. The Good Kind of Sore: What a Kayaking Trip Taught Me About Getting Back in Shape

I hadn't picked up a kayak paddle by myself in almost twenty years, and my arms let me know about it for two days straight. In this episode I talk about my four hour paddleboarding and kayaking trip at Lake Laurel, why I skipped the paddleboard for the kayak, and what it felt like to realize just how out of shape I still am on the water.I also open up about the physical stuff I've been dealing with lately, hitting day 365 of continuous movement, and why there's a real difference between pain from pushing your body and pain from sitting still all day. Plus, I've got a big announcement about some upcoming guest hosted episodes and what's coming to the Patreon from Rhonda, including boot camps and exclusive content you won't hear anywhere else. Is Walking Enough? The Guilt of "Just" Moving Your Body

Is a walk and some stretching really "enough" movement, or does that guilty voice in your head know something you don't? Ashley gets real about the shame spiral that hits even after a full year of daily movement, and breaks down what the American Heart Association and Harvard Medical School actually recommends. She walks through the real numbers behind the 150 minutes a week guideline, why sitting for hours at a stretch carries real health risks, and why "enough" movement looks different for everybody. This episode is a reminder that grace matters as much as effort, that moving throughout your day counts, and that you don't have to earn your rest by going full throttle every single time. When Every Rep Feels Wrong: Showing Up on Your Worst Gym Day

I walked into the gym on zero sleep, dealing with health issues, and honestly not wanting to be there at all. My form was off, I missed steps in the Zumba routines, and even my instructor called me out when I was struggling to lift my weights. In this episode, I get real about what it's like to push through a genuinely bad workout instead of skipping it altogether, and why that choice matters more than nailing every move. I think back to my very first Zumba class in August 2023, when I had to walk out after fifteen minutes, and compare it to where I am now. This one's for anyone who's ever dragged themselves to the gym feeling defeated. Consistency isn't about perfect workouts. It's about refusing to let yourself off the hook, even on the hard days. Music and Movement: Why I Can't Work Out in Silence

I didn't realize how much I relied on music until I got stuck doing squats in a gas station parking lot with no playlist at all. In this episode, I talk about why the right song can carry you through the hardest part of a workout, what happened when I tried to move without music, and why my instructor Rhonda's playlist at the YMCA might be the best one I've ever heard. If your workouts feel harder than they should, this episode might be the missing piece. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. Why I'm Doing This in My 40s, For the Woman I'll Be at 70

I've never told anyone this, but I was on blood pressure medication for a few months long before I even turned forty, and it scared me more than I can explain. Sadly, even that wasn't enough to get me to move my body...but it should have been. In this episode, I talk about why every workout I do now isn't really for today, it's for the woman I'll be at seventy, eighty, and beyond. I get into why strength and mobility now mean independence later, and why fitness in your 40s is really about protecting your freedom for decades to come. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. If I Started Over: The Mistakes I'd Skip This Time

I wasted money on weight loss pills and shots, and the second I stopped, the weight came right back on. In this episode, I get honest about the fitness mistakes I'd skip if I could start over, from diet culture guilt to obsessing over the scale. I share what I'd tell my younger self, why rest matters as much as movement, and how to make sure you're moving for yourself, not for anyone else. If you're just getting started, this one can save you time, money, and a lot of guilt. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. The Goals That Scare Me for Year Two

Ashley breaks down what she's learned after a full year of daily movement and why this was never meant to be a temporary challenge. She talks about her goal to consistently reach for 20 pound and 10 pound dumbbells, her hope to finally fit into smaller pants after dropping four sizes, and her plan to move throughout the entire day instead of just during workouts. She also shares why she wants to grow the accountability community and get more people moving, plus the new activities she's adding to her routine, including hiking, biking, dance classes, and maybe even kickboxing. If you've ever finished a fitness goal and wondered what comes next, this episode will help you figure out how to keep going without burning out. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. Saying Goodbye to My Before Clothes

In this episode, I get honest about cleaning out my closet and just how complicated that process turned out to be. Some clothes I was thrilled to get rid of. Others I felt weirdly attached to, even though I don't want to fit into them again. I talk about the clothes I bought just because they fit my bigger body, even when I didn't actually like them, and why I now realize that was tied to feeling embarrassed about my size at the time. I also get into the "fat tax," the frustrating reality that bigger clothes often cost more, and why I'm being cautious about buying a full new wardrobe while I'm still working on getting smaller. If you've ever felt weirdly sentimental about clothes you swore you'd never miss, or nervous about spending money on a body you're still changing, this one's for you. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. Stop Scrolling Fitspo: Why Comparing Your Progress to Others Is Sabotaging You

Scrolling fitspo and feeling behind? You have no idea what's really happening behind those posts. Here's why comparison is wrecking your progress and what to do instead. In this episode, Ashley breaks down "compare-schlager" (comparing yourself to everyone except who you were yesterday) and why doomscrolling through other people's fitness content can quietly derail your mental progress. She gets honest about her own struggles watching people who started later than her lose more weight or get stronger faster, and why genetics, stress levels, and unseen habits make those comparisons pointless. Tornado Watch or Tornado Warning: The Real Reason I Finally Started Working Out

Freedom Isn't Just a Holiday. It's What Fitness Gives You Back.

A thirty-five pack of water used to mean asking for help. Now Ashley picks it up herself, and that's just the start of what fitness gave her back. In this Fourth of July episode, she talks about the real freedom that comes from getting stronger: carrying your own groceries, taking the stairs without stopping, dancing all night without needing a chair. She reflects on hikes she couldn't have finished a year ago and a dance floor moment with her husband that reminded her why she started. Your Body Wants Movement All Day, Not All at Once: Travel Fitness Tips from a Physical Therapist

That alone is worth the listen.Jen shares practical, zero-equipment ways to keep moving while you travel, from taking the stairs at your hotel to doing squats at the gas pump. Ashley reacts with her own take on movement snacks and why she, as someone with a desk job, has started sprinkling Zumba songs and wall sits throughout her workday. In-Between Stage of Fitness: Why I'm Buying Clothes a Size Too Small (Smart or Risky?)

Some of your clothes are too big. Some are too tight. None of them feel right anymore. If you're losing weight and stuck in that awkward middle where nothing in your closet matches your body, this episode is for you. Ashley talks through the real, unglamorous side of a changing body: donating bras that don't fit, buying new clothes a size too small on purpose, and wrestling with whether to keep her old "bigger" clothes or let them go for good. She gets honest about her complicated relationship with the scale, why she refuses to turn this podcast into a diet or calorie-counting show, and what she's learned from a past experience with restrictive dieting that taught her the hard way that quick fixes don't last. This is a real conversation about non-scale victories, body image in transition, and choosing movement over restriction every single time. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. I Caved (And I'd Do It Again): What Happened When My Workout Plan Went Out the Window

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your fitness plan is ignore it. When the weather tanked Ashley's Thursday hike, she did what any reasonable person would do: she caved and headed straight to the gym instead. In this episode, Ashley breaks down what happens when your new workout schedule collides with real life, and why "caving" might actually be the smartest move you can make. She shares what it was like to stack a Pilates class and a Tabata session back to back, why she only struggled with one exercise (and why that felt like a win), and what it meant to lift her 20-pound dumbbells and feel strong doing it. She also gets into her love for morning stretching, why bedtime stretches might be next on her list, and what it really means to stay committed to movement even when the plan changes. Why Doing Your Fitness Publicly Might Be the Only Thing That Actually Keeps You Going

What if the secret to sticking with fitness wasn't willpower or the perfect plan, but the fact that people are watching? In this episode, Ashley gets real about one of her biggest fears: failing at fitness in front of an audience, and why that fear might actually be her most powerful motivator. She talks about what happens when you build your whole public presence around moving your body and then, sometimes, your body just won't cooperate. Those are the days the guilt hits hardest. Ashley opens up about working through that guilt, what daily accountability posts have done for her consistency, and why she believes doing your fitness publicly could be the missing piece for anyone who keeps falling off track. Plus, she's thinking about starting a community group where listeners can check in with each other around movement, nothing diet-culture, nothing toxic, just: did you move today? Show Up: How You Do One Thing Is How You Do Everything

Three hundred days of movement didn't just change Ashley's body. It changed her finances, her spiritual life, her relationships, and her ability to handle the hard stuff life kept throwing at her. In this episode, Ashley breaks down the surprisingly real connection between showing up for your fitness and showing up for every other area of your life, and why that one small commitment might be the thing that finally gets everything else unstuck. She gets into the unexpected ways consistent movement spilled into her mental health, her money habits, her friendships, and even her faith. She also talks honestly about the moments this year that were anything but easy, why showing up matters most when everything feels hardest, and the mindset shift that changed how she sees the challenges coming her way. If something feels off in your life right now, this episode is going to make you think twice about where the real fix starts.Want to share your story or give feedback on the show? Why I Feel Guilty About Food (Even Though I Don't Believe in Diets)

You don't subscribe to diet culture, so why does eating a bowl of pasta still make you feel like you've done something wrong? If the cravings have been hitting hard lately and the guilt is hitting harder, this one is for you.In this episode of More Movement Please, Ashley gets honest about a stretch of relentless sweet, carb, and soda cravings, and the guilt that showed up uninvited along with them. She talks through what she's actually doing about it, from moving her body more and reaching for water first, to giving herself real permission to indulge in a mindful way so the guilt doesn't spiral into binging. This is not a lecture on willpower. It's a reminder that fitness is sometimes messy, that cravings are normal, and that you can be active, mindful, and still completely human. If you've ever felt alone in the messy middle, come hang out.Want to share your story or give feedback on the show? I Cried on a Mountain Last Week: How Should I Celebrate 1 Year of Maximum Effort?

Last week I stood at a mountain overlook and cried, and the view was not the reason. The reason was that this time last year, I physically could not have made the hike to get up there. In less than two months, I hit 365 days of maximum effort in fitness, and I have absolutely no clue how to celebrate it yet. In this episode, I talk through what one year of going all in has actually looked like (over 700 workouts, 624 classes, four pant sizes down, graduating from three-pound weights to twenty-pound dumbbells), why I refuse to stop celebrating every milestone along the way, and the half-formed ideas I am wrestling with for the big day. Should I do 365 squats and 365 push-ups like one of my Facebook followers suggested? Stick with the espresso martini and tiramisu cheesecake plan? Pack the day with back-to-back Zumba, low-impact cardio, and toning classes? I want your help picking this.Want to share your story or give feedback on the show? Less Movement, Please? Wait, WHAT?!?

Three hundred plus days of pretty much daily movement, and the More Movement Please girl is about to say something you probably did not expect: less movement, please. Well…sort of. I just got back from a seven-day trip, got dressed to go to Tabata, made it as far as the doorway before getting sick, and finally had to admit out loud what my body has been screaming for weeks. In this episode, I'm sharing the new four-week experiment I just announced on Instagram (three gym days instead of five, with yoga, walking, hiking, and stretching filling the other four), the head colds and cycle issues that have been piling up despite being healthier than I've ever been, and the very real fear of being judged that almost kept me quiet about all of this. If you're white-knuckling a fitness routine that is quietly wearing you down, this one is for you. Spoiler: pulling back is not quitting.Want to share your story or give feedback on the show? Waterfalls, Wet Rocks, and What Terrain Actually Does to Your Body

How does a 0.6-mile hike eat up a full hour and leave your quads screaming? Because terrain is everything, and I learned that the hard way over seven days of waterfall hikes from Kentucky to Florida and back. In this episode, I'm breaking down why hiking twelve miles on uneven ground hits harder than walking twenty miles flat, why downhill is secretly more brutal than uphill (looking at you, eccentric quad load), and the sliced pinkie I picked up at Tallulah Gorge that taught me to keep my hands free. I'm also sharing the non-scale victory I did not see coming: my husband asking me to slow down for once. Plus, the food and water recap I promised, including how splitting every dinner saved us money and calories, why packing one prepped meal for the road is a move I'll make every trip, and what we drank, ate, and refilled obsessively for seven days straight. Vacation does not have to mean pausing your movement. Here's proof.Want to share your story or give feedback on the show? Real Talk on Weights, the Scale, and What a Full Week of Working Out Actually Looks Like

She lifted the 20-pound dumbbells and didn't die...and that's just one of the wins Ashley is unpacking in this listener Q&A. From what a real week of workouts looks like after 280+ days of consistency to her honest, complicated relationship with the scale, this episode gets into the stuff people actually want to know. Ashley talks non-scale victories (including a wedding ring that hadn't fit in a decade), why she dialed back from 22 hours of exercise a week to 13, what the people in her life think about how much she works out, and what she'd tell anyone who keeps saying they'll start on Monday. ABOUT THIS SHOW
