Proofing Stage
by Joan Kanner, Michelle Bond
Proofing Stage examines the origins, progress, struggles, and setbacks of entrepreneurs through the lens of its founders, who, among other things, have run a bagel business for the past 8 years. This podcast is about our experiences and the nitty gritty of being an underrepresented small business owner.Just like we've worked to fill the gap in quality bagels, lox, and schmear, these conversations fill the gap of knowledge, mentorship, and straight talk that are missing from other business pods and success stories. Join us, as we share wins and cautionary tales from that space between “atta girl” and “I told you so!” Hosted by Joan Kanner and Michelle Bond, with Season 1 contributions from Amanda Schwarz.

Panning for Feedback Gold: A Strategy Bonanza
Marie Silverstrim, User Experience (UX) DesignerWhether you are observing actions or directly asking, your customers and clients are telling you something. Understanding not only what that is but the why behind it... well, that's what gets you to the good stuff. And, while it's always a good time to make sure your business goals are aligned with customer needs, Q1 of 2025 continues to remind us that the behaviors we use to understand these needs might not mean what we think they do, or what they once did. Just as possible, new and wonderful opportunities might emerge from this disruption. As we consider ways to understand existing customers and reach new ones during periods of uncertainty, our guide is Marie Silverstrim, a UX designer who is a master at breaking down concepts and delivering practical advice that is immediately actionable. Together with Joan Kanner's love of all things survey and Michelle Bond's contextualization of business in the current moment, we wrap up Proofing Stage's third season with an honest-to-goodness bonanza of tools and anecdotes to help you meet your moment.E.g.:Good design often goes unnoticed, making it feel invisibleFeedback from users is essential for improving products and servicesSurveys and direct conversations can yield valuable insightsStakeholder opinions can differ from user needs; balance is keyIterative design allows for continuous improvement and adaptationThe real 'why' behind user feedback is essential for growthLinksClassic UX 101 books:Don't Make Me Think by Steve KrugThe Design of Everyday Things by Don NormanOther books:Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself by Nedra Glover TawwabBurnout by Emily Nagoski and Amelia NagoskiGlossary:Institutional Review Board (IRB)Likert scalePersonally identifiable information (PII)PollThe following UX terms may be found here:AffordancesMinimum viable product (MVP)QualitativeQuantitativeFocus groupsSurveyagile UXA/B testingCredits:Theme Music by Thorn HazeAdditional music by Come On Boy by MondayHopesPodcast Cover Art by Lisa OryeProduced by Joan Kanner and Michelle BondFind more at proofingstage.comFollow us on Instagram and Threads @proofingstageJoin Proofing Stage+ to support us supporting you, AND access new bonus content in-between episodes!See Buzzsprout's Privacy Policy for listener privacy and read our disclaimer here.

Tabitha? Cute, but don't mess. Endora? Fierce.Sabrina? Work.Joanne Lakomski? Um, legend. We're here with some new, free bonus content to start off 2025. Our recording with Joanne Lakomski, The Human Resorceress, was particularly content-rich and timely as we reflect on this past year while priming us for the new one.Hey, if you're one of our Proofing Stage+ Patreon subscribers, this is your second bonus with Joanne. Just a little plug for supporting us in that way. Ahem... This bonus content highlights themes that we couldn't fit into our main episode with Joanne. Wanna know one? All right. Let me give you a hint. There are so many things we find irritating that people regularly do. One is using the word "witch" to sanitize what they really want to call someone - "bitch." Yes, it's annoying that they're unnecessarily pulling a punch. But for us, it's also about mislabeling someone as a "witch." Rude. Don't be a Derwood! What Qualifies You? Passion, Position, Funding & Filmmaking
Dr. Anaïs Webster Mennuti, PharmD Co-founder of Shots With That LLC Marie Wilda, Founder/CEO Lenkai.co In this week's episode Michelle and Joan sit down with producers, Anaïs and Marie, to learn more about the driving factors behind their documentary film, Harmacy, including their personal experiences and funding sought to make it happen. While Big Pharma and the opioid epidemic have flooded our culture and consciousness, less attention has been paid to pharmacies themselves - their workers, and the people they serve. As corporate chains have elbowed out community pharmacies, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians also experience burnout, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, miscarriage, and even death. Patients experience frustration and fear of not being able to fill their prescriptions on time and the harmful repercussions that result. Our conversation looks at what it takes to bring this project (or any) to life - experience, persistence, money and connections are just the beginning. The question of "What qualifies you?" is familiar territory for women and underrepresented leaders in every industry and position. Join us for (another) candid conversation about why shedding light is important, what it takes to be heard, and the value of just doing the thing in order to prove your concept and build momentum. If you're thinking about any of the following, this one's for you:The hidden costs of things often not discussedTiming of pursuing a larger platform to tell your storyFinding a team to help you flesh out a conceptValuing your time and effort in relation to budgetBreaking into an industry as an outsiderUnderstanding where your work fits in a larger cultural contextUsing your lived and professional experience to do something others can'tOh, and stick around until the very end of the episode to learn about our surprise sponsor!Connect with Harmcacy Film:Web: Harmacy FilmSocials: @HarmacyFilmEmail for investment opportunitiesAnaïs Webster Mennuti, PharmD Director / Producer / Co-CreatorIG: @anaiswebmenMarie Wilda, ProducerFounder / CEO Lenkai.co (B2B Revenue Accelerator)IG: @m_esther12LinkedInLinks:Docs in ProgressScroobiousCredits:Theme Music by Thorn HazeAdditional Music by: AnyStyle via Pixabay & HVRGND via PixabayPodcast Cover Art by Lisa Orye Ad written and performed by Joan KannerAd music by: Lexin_Music via PixabayProduced by Joan Kanner and Michelle BondFind more at proofingstage.comFollow us on Instagram and Threads @proofingstageJoin Proofing Stage+ to support us supporting you, AND access new bonus content in-between episodes!See Buzzsprout's Privacy Policy for listener privacy and read our disclaimer here.

Representation Matters: The 'Who's Got You' of Good PR
Megan Hanson, Public Relations & Communications ConsultantIn an age of perpetual content creation and AI, you don't tend to hear much about traditional PR anymore. Often, it can feel like it's about the likes, the engagement numbers. And, don't get us wrong, measures are important. But here's a secret that this Proofing Stage episode shouts loud and proud: It's the people behind those measures that matter most. Customers. Team Members. Your Publicist - these are all people, baby. Actual human beings who, in the words of Megan Hanson, "want to connect with actual human beings."Start ups and bootstrapping small businesses often don't have the budget, or sometimes even the vision, to see how the long game of relationship building can pay off big. It takes time, effort, money and skills that not everyone has or has the bandwidth for. Today's conversation with Megan fills in the gaps about what you need to know to decide if working with a PR person is right for you, and if it's the right time. Together with Megan, Michelle and Joan explore mission and personal and professional fit, because at the end of the day you need the best ambassador you can have to represent your business. And, that definition of best? Well, that's completely up to you. What Acquiring Minds Want to Know
Alexis Grant, Founder & CEO of They Got Acquired“What I’m passionate about is helping founders who have put their blood, sweat, and tears into these businesses, especially female founders, to walk away with as much money as they deserve,” says Alexis Grant, founder and CEO of They Got Acquired. In this episode, Lexi joins Michelle and Joan to demystify the often-underestimated art of selling a business, especially for small and underrepresented founders. The conversation digs into why thinking of a business sale from day one can be a game-changer for small businesses, and how prepping your business for that sale often means having a better (and more fun) business to run. Lexi advocates for thinking of your business from a buyer's perspective, which doesn’t only mean revenue and profit, but also managing team dynamics and internal processes during a sale, which can sometimes put deals at risk. The best part? If you’re a business with a six- or seven-figure sale the payoff for years of bootstrapping and below-market salary often means more than money. Selling your business is not just an exit strategy but a launchpad for new ventures, latitude for more innovation and community empowerment. Lexi’s new data platform exemplifies this mission, providing founders with the insights they need to connect with the right buyers. This final episode of Season 2 of Proofing Stage leaves us fired up and ready to go, providing tactics you can walk away with to:Consider a business sale as the strategic move Tap into resources for selling your business early onIdentify which levers to pull to make your business more appealing to buyersAssess operational sticking points and risks to being acquiredFocus on profit, not just revenueTake learnings from your first business to position your next one for saleDiscuss acquisition as a growth strategy for your businessLinksConnect with Alexis Grant:https://alexisgrant.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexisgrant/They Got AcquiredBeing a Buyer Rather than a FounderAcquiring Minds PodcastTheme Music: Thorn HazeAdditional Music: OgifeeltheBeat, prazkhanal, juniorsoundaysCover Art: Lisa Orye Ad by Joan Kanner performed by Michelle BondAd music Fresh MorningExecutive Producers: Joan Kanner & Michelle BondProduction by HiveCast.fmFind more at proofingstage.comFollow us on Instagram and Threads @proofingstageJoin Proofing Stage+ to support us supporting you, AND access new bonus content in-between episodes!See Buzzsprout's Privacy Policy for listener privacy and read our disclaimer here.

You Gotta Break Up to Break Thru
RescuePoetix™ (she/her/ella/ellas), Poet, Advocate, Artist, Educator“It’s breaking up and then finding the breakthrough in that breakup,” says RescuePoetix™ as she talks with hosts Michelle Bond and Joan Kanner about her podcast, discussing how breaking up with concepts and constructs can lead to profound insights and personal growth. RescuePoetix™—the first Puerto Rican woman poet laureate emeritus of Jersey City—shares her journey as a bilingual, globally published performing poet, advocate, spoken word artist, and educator. A practiced advocate for herself and others, she inspires as an artist manager, and speaks about fair pay for creatives, the heavy toll of trauma on business decisions, and the evolution of her play, “By the Light of the Ghetto Moon.”We recommend sitting down with a cortado and a buttered roll for this #crewjersey episode as they illustrate and unpack what it’s like to be underrepresented small business owners and artists, tackling topics like the value of art, fair compensation, and intergenerational trauma.A conversation in the truest sense of the word, these women leverage personal stories to convey:The realities of being a BIPOC artist entrepreneurConcepts and family cultures that hold us backGritty details like term sheets, valuing time, and building community trustBalancing the hustle of chasing opportunities with the wisdom of letting things unfold naturallyRights and responsibilities of business leadersBreaking cycles and trauma reactions to improve decision-makingNote: There's also a timely mention of Richard Simmons towards the end of this episode. Michelle and Joan "Role" with Avis Boone
In what would become the waning days of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last September, Bottoms Up Bagels (BUB) trekked up to New York City to spread some bagel love, and rounded out their BUB Roadshow engaging with those on the picket line. Among them was Avis Boone, actor, model, voice actor, photographer and content creator. From False Urgencies to Force Multipliers
“There is so much false urgency I have fallen prey to that I’ve learned about through this business. I don’t want to see other people making those mistakes, especially women,” says Joan Kanner on past challenges in business. Alongside co-host Michelle Bond, they kick off the second season of Proofing Stage. Likening the podcast to a business self-defense course, Michelle and Joan aim to equip female business owners with the necessary knowledge to fend off unexpected or unfair obstacles. The duo shares their diverse backgrounds and their journey from career frustrations to creating their own ventures: a company driven by karma, a music app, and their crave-able concept, Bottoms Up Bagels (BUB). As they take stock of their first season, they reflect on their growth as queer female founders and the role of the podcast in offering business insights and enhancing their network. They discuss the expansive potential of podcasts and their mission as force multipliers—to be the mentors and coaches they didn’t have. Today's episode sets the stage for what’s to come in Season 2 and acknowledges the great work of Season 1 producer and contributor, Amanda Schwarz. Michelle and Joan hint at a lineup of diverse guests for the new season and explore the concept of “proofing” across different fields. Whether you are tuning in to build your business chops or just learn from real people with genuine stories Proofing Stage is set to rise to the occasion. Roadshow Part II: A Tale of Three Cities

From overcoming obstacles like staffing shortages and supply chain shortfalls to equipment breakdowns, team injuries and illness, the gnarly bits of taking the bagel show on the road abound. But, as Amanda and BUB's co-founders discuss, there are community connections and piles of scrumptious bagels, lox and sandwiches to make the trip(s) worthwhile. Roadshow Part I: Grow Where You're Planted, but First Go Where You're Wanted
Earlier in the pod we introduced the BUB Roadshow, Bottoms Up Bagels (BUB)'s way of busting the water myth and testing new markets for expansion. Part bagel pop up - part traveling circus - at its core, "The Roadshow" is about bringing good bagels to more people with local communities at its center. Today, Joan, Amanda and Michelle pull back the curtain on the how, and the why (oh, why?!) of doing an insane thing on top of the already questionable thing of running a small business. Because when you know your customer is everywhere, you go find them.In this, the first of two episodes about the Roadshow, we explore: #BozangelesWhy is there an "it's the water that makes a great bagel" myth? Placemaking in the Era of Ghost Kitchens
It's 2019 and Bottoms Up Bagels (BUB) is feeling the pinch of increased overhead while working with a limited business model - relying on pop ups, catering and wholesale without everyday direct-to-customer sales opportunities. The wheels are set in motion though, and the dream of production meeting retail in BUB's first brick and mortar is on its way to being realized. At this, our halfway point of Season 1, Amanda follows Joan and Michelle through the early stages of locating a space for the future home of their business, and digs into the balance between finding fertile ground, making space in your community for beautiful things to happen, and what it takes to even get to the starting line. The Myth of Meritocracy/Mentorship, Schmentorship
What's that they say about hindsight? Sometimes we're fortunate to see red flags in real time. But, most times it takes a while. And, even then we can still be left wondering what happened. Or, whose version of events were "right." Then, throw in the question of intentions (known and unknown) and it's easy to give up on the prospect of ever really understanding the meaning of a given situation. But here at Proofing Stage, we never give up. We're trying to put past business experiences into context and bring what learnings there are forward for us, and for you, dear listener. This week we continue the conversation about systems by focusing on gatekeepers and "mentorship." What options are there for growth when you're just starting out, and does true collaboration really exist? We uncover who gets asked what kinds of questions (prevention over promotion, much?) and debate the merits of food halls as amenities that are the brain child of development companies versus viable stepping stones for budding business to launch into prime time.Joan, Amanda and Michelle are a little punchy this week, and talkin':Nepo babiesA Nepo baby who made a play for BUB's recipesThe woman guised as a mentor who enabled said nepo babyGatekeepersNon-competes in commercial leasesNDAs, but like, the good kindDoes anyone have enough data to truly vote with their dollar?Being told that you don't know what you do know CW: Adult languageTheme music by Thorn HazeAdditional music by rain_of_thrones (via Pixabay) Artwork by Lisa OryeFind more at proofingstage.comFollow us on Instagram and Threads @proofingstageJoin Proofing Stage+ to support us supporting you, AND access new bonus content in-between episodes!See Buzzsprout's Privacy Policy for listener privacy and read our disclaimer here.

BONUS: "When you put it down on paper, you put it down..."
In the spirit of the new year, we're sharing our aspirations. What are yours? In a recent production meeting, Michelle, Amanda and Joan asked: "What's your hope for this podcast?" This BTS bonus episode begins to answer that question... Some highlights below:Joan:"It had to have catharsis, but also have catharsis with meaning [outside of us]. I feel like just a bitch session for us would not be meaningful to listeners and also readers...So it's important to like to meaningfully share something, to establish who we - all the three of us - are, actually, to see if people want to continue on this journey with us and to bring people along as we go. But people are now listening to the foundational episodes and I think that's important to establish character and experience and see if anything resonates with people."Amanda:"I've been thinking about the catharsis that comes from creation a lot within the past, actually the past 24 hours, 48 hours. I was speaking with a friend of mine who's an author and we had brunch and it was really nice and we were talking about how well. I'm writing memoir right now and how there was one piece in particular that I had been carrying around for a really, really long time about a situation when I was very young and I wrote it and a very strange thing happened to me at least that you know, I think people talk about but they don't talk about as openly as they should is - that when you put it down on paper, you put it down and you're able to carry on."Michelle: "But you know that's a process, for lots of things is to just... put it down and then see what pieces of it you wanna pick up to go on your next journey, and that's for me it's very much that process. And then the bonus of seeing where it can go and what it brings out in people and if there's a community that we can help foster or connect to other communities talking about similar things, that's really exciting and it's been exciting to not be afraid to put our whole selves out there."Find more at proofingstage.comFollow us on Instagram and Threads @proofingstageJoin Proofing Stage+ to support us supporting you, AND access new bonus content in-between episodes!See Buzzsprout's Privacy Policy for listener privacy and read our disclaimer here.

Bootstrapping: "I was powered by The Drug"
You're getting to know our founders a little more everyday. The context provider. The cut-to-the-chase-er. The outside observer. While the businesses we've begun are in different industries, the hustle is similar - living the literal dream while trying to make ends meet, and having the right tools for the job. Were we getting ready for a dog show? Nope. A theater performance? Nope. A farmers market? YES! This week, you'll learn about Bottoms Up Bagels' (BUB's) first sales day - which was not unlike the build up and culmination of a Christopher Guest movie. Whether you are an over-complicator, over-achiever or just thrive on the "figuring it out" of entrepreneurship, this episode is for you.But first, here are the other tasty, crispy bits on the edge of this podcast lasagne:There is a big difference between your friends liking your food and strangers liking what you make. "So, why are we doin' this?"
Michelle and Joan are doers. They don't just have ideas, they go after them - sometimes too hard and for too long. Sometimes to great success and following. This first episode of Proofing Stage lays the groundwork for why, after a professional lifetime of going after things, creating and improving, it's time to take a look back and figure out where to go from here. And, why doing it with others is the only way to do it. As the episode title suggests, we answer the question: "Why are we doin' the podcast?" Together with our host, Amanda, the answer includes:Capturing years of entrepreneurshipShining a light on the challenging experiences we face as minority business ownersDescribing what Michelle and Joan did before the bagel bizExplaining how businesses reflect their foundersDemonstrating what goes into a minimally viable productFostering communityTalking about how others perceive your dreamsTo open up our networksHighlighting mistakes for others to learn fromBecause the hustle and grind wants to keep us from communingAlong the way, you learn more about Joan, Michelle and Amanda. And, yes, Michelle explains the significance of this pod's name. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Proofing Stage examines the origins, progress, struggles, and setbacks of entrepreneurs through the lens of its founders, who, among other things, have run a bagel business for the past 8 years.
