The AZT 800 Bike Packing Winner - Alex Schultz

This episode features an incredible conversation with Alex Schultz, winner of this year’s Arizona Trail 800 finishing in an unbelievable 9 days and 10 hours! This marks Alex’s third finish in the 800, following his win in 2023 and second-place finish in 2024, and it also completes his 2025 Triple Crown Challenge. He wrapped up an unbelievable season that included finishing the Tour Divide in 16 days, 16 hours, and 27 minutes, and the Colorado Trail Race in 5 days, 2 hours, and 16 minutes. With a new route rerouted with an out and back on the Grand Canyon and a Humphreys Peak summit, and finishing in Flagstaff, this year’s AZT 800 was one for the books. Alex and I dive into how the course differed from previous years due to the North Rim burn, the massive vert, and the harsh conditions that tested every racer on the trail AKA the COLD.Despite freezing temps, long nights, and relentless climbing, Alex managed to hold strong and take the win by a huge margin. Every rider out there showed incredible grit, both mentally and physically — but Alex’s ride was truly something special. This episode was totally spur of the moment — Alex had just come by to pick up his car from my place after finishing the race, and we figured, “Why not hit record?” What followed was a raw, inspiring conversation about endurance, mindset, and what it takes to push beyond your limits.Tune in, leave a comment, and share your thoughts — this one’s packed with stoke and respect for everyone who takes on the Arizona Trail.Read more about Alex's journey on bikepacking.com: https://bikepacking.com/news/alex-schultz-wins-2025-aztr/Follow Alex on Instagram: @schultzy954

Logan Kasper on Winning Unbound XL and his Approach to Optimism, Having Fun, and Enjoying the Ride

SO STOKED to introduce Logan Kasper to the Stoke Podcast. Logan just won the Unbound XL which is 350 miles of unreal gravel roads. He completed it in 22 hours and 54 minutes. Logan and I dove into the race, publicity, and his mindset. Something super cool about his journey was the approach he took to certain things that may have been conceived as bad, or time consuming; but Logan took adversity in the light of optimism. Mud, not a problem because he found a solution, train stoppage, great it’s time to eat. This kind of approach he embodied won him the race, no doubt. During our conversation, there wasn’t anything we discussed that indicated he was having a shitty time. He explained, “it was a vacation, so I’m going to enjoy it.” And that he did. Pinyon and Pines 500 Mile Winner Mathew Annabel, Understanding Badger and a Conversation About Adversity, Listening to Nature, Spiritual Signs and Move Forward GO

Matt Annabel doesn’t just ride his bike for the fun of it, he rides to overcome adversity. He recently just won the Pinyon and Pines 500 mile bike packing race in Northern Arizona. Matt and the other riders didn’t have it easy on this year's race. There were multiple rain storms that seemed to have lasted 2-3 days, which resulted in a downpour on the landscape making it “death” mud. Matt didn’t only have to overcome the down pours, he also broke a crank and had to scooter his bike 20 miles to the nearest bike shop in Camp Verde. After some help from local trail angels, Matt was able to get a crank and start pedaling. Through all of the help and support, he was determined to peddle through the night to spread his gratitude for his family and support.  Matt’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/matt.annabel/ Matt’s Blog (go check this out!): mofogo.org MOXI NUTRITION https://www.moxilife.com/?afmc=STOKEPODCAST&utm_campaign=STOKEPODCAST&utm_source=leaddyno&utm_medium=affiliate Get 15% off at checkout using code: STOKEPODCAST If you, or anyone you know wants to sponsor Stoke Podcast message: https://www.instagram.com/stokepodcast/

Training Plan of a Professional Off-Road Cyclist with Chad Barentsen, Mentality, and The Stoke of Riding and Racing Bikes

Chad Berentsen and I talk about TRAINING in today's episode. This conversation is super important, because no matter what level you are at, any kind of training is good training. Whether you have a race on the schedule, bike packing adventure, or you just want to boost your overall fitness, this is the episode for you. We dive into heart rate zones, power meters, FTP (functional threshold power) and nutrition on the bike. As shown below, we are not coaches, but professional athletes who implement a strict training plan, so any type of riding is good.  I wish I heard this conversation 3 years ago, because I had no idea how to train, or take care of my fitness. Just like Chad, I would go balls to the wall everyday, then hit a wall for three days and feel like shit and repeat the cycle. It has taken a few years to understand how my body likes to train, and with the help from Stokehaus coaching, I have a plan based on my racing goals. No matter where you are right now fitness wise, I hope you can take away some good information from Chad and I. IMPORTANT: We are not coaches, or licensed to give any advice on any training techniques. We are professional athletes who train on a daily basis, and give advice on the mistakes we have made in the past. https://www.moxilife.com/?afmc=STOKEPODCAST&utm_campaign=STOKEPODCAST&utm_source=leaddyno&utm_medium=affiliate Get 15% off at checkout using code: STOKEPODCAST If you, or anyone you know wants to sponsor Stoke Podcast message: https://www.instagram.com/stokepodcast/

Jesse Reeves and Dana Ernst on Winning the Stagecoach 400 Ultra Bike Packing Race, Riding Solo to Riding Together, and When the Bad Moments Hit

Jesse Reeves and Dana Ernst describe their epic 400 mile bike packing race. Although this is a solo effort, these two had no idea they would meet, and ride almost 300 miles together through Southern California. Listening to these two describing their "cat and mouse" chase with each other with almost no sleep tired me out. These two didn't wait for each-other, it was drop and catch for almost 300 miles of this race. Think about that. Imagine you are 200 miles into a race and continue to put in efforts to catch a little blinking light in front of you over and over and over again. You catch them, then ride with them, then dropping them, then getting caught again for more than 40 hours. Just that alone hurts my brain. The Stage Coach 400 is an iconic route that brings together Southern California's diverse ecosystem. Bring together Desert, Mountains, and Ocean with roughly 374 miles of earth to cover (if you don't go off course). Do you get help with this race? Only from yourself. In this episode we talk about his journey and how it led him to the bike shop, as the universe intended it to be. Throughout his life he talks about how he meets certain people that changed his direction for the better and are still very significant people in his life to this day. Almost like a family away from family. Pia also goes into his problems with alcohol and substance abuse, which is why he is sober to this day almost 5 years later. Pia rides his bike for the same reason we all do, he seeks the physical limit, discovers the weaknesses of the mind, but ultimately to fall in love with the moment again and again while hearing the tires purr against the surfaces. Sarah Swallow on what it takes to be a professional ultra-endurance cyclist, and the ups and downs of working as an ambassador in the industry

Sarah Swallow is a professional ultra endurance bike packer who is dedicated to being an advocate for the sport. Through all of the things Sarah puts on her plate, she still finds time to create amazing routes, coordinate events, and write amazing stories about her adventures. In this episode, she dove into how she found the bike, her introduction into bike packing, and how her career as a pro cyclist started. I really found interest in the recent story she wrote for VeloNews. Her and many of the outdoor ambassadors for Specialized received an email early December of 2022 stating they are discontinuing their ambassador program. This had a major effect on many athletes and outdoor enthusiasts of the sport who do amazing things for companies like Specialized. She described the implications this had on her and her decisions for 2023. Being laid off isn’t the best feeling, let alone being laid off at the end of 2022 when most bike companies have already established a budget for the following season. While doing research on her and this topic, I’ve noticed that this is becoming a bigger issue across other companies and athletes as well. I hope you enjoy this episode. Happy Hour with Zac Naser on how biking is more spiritual than we think

Zac is a bicycle lover. He strives to push his limits each and every time he sets out for an adventure.  We dive into his EPIC 170 mile ride through the high deserts of Arizona. Zac explains that every time he has been on a big adventure, it usually represents a new turning point in his life, like turning the the page into a new chapter of life. We discuss how the bike can be a vehicle to understand self. How pain can be instantly transformed into euphoria, and how euphoria is once again turned into pain. Yet, we still remain present and observant of all aspects of the experience the bike presents to us.  Thanks for tuning into this new segment of the podcast called "Happy Hour". The conversation is loose, real, and hopefully full of good stories.
