Change, Neuroplasticity + Grief with guest Jaime Armstrong

What is your response to change?Do you love it? Do you resist it?What if you shift your perspective and realize you are an expert at change? What if you trust that your brain is functioning perfectly and you are exactly where you’re meant to be?What if you could “stress proof” your brain and change your whole life experience with change? In this episode Jaime Armstrong is my guest and we explore change, Neuroplasticity + grief. It’s an awesome conversation! You’re gonna love it. These are the key takeaways:we are pros at change. Change is a constant in life. We are always changing because we are always evolving. Change is natural, and it can be fun and feel GOOD.Our brains are designed to keep us alive - for survival. Nothing is “wrong” if you feel fearful or angry about change - that’s a physiological survival response. Your brain is “doing” its primary job to keep you alive. AND as humans, we have the additional development of the brain to think about the past + future AND to observe our thoughts, tap into intuition, assert willpower to do / not do something, connect with logic and reason (judgement) and imaginationAnother definition of grief is - the awkward transition of doing something different. It’s about reestablishing connection with the person, place or thing that is no longer present in our life. Your loved one wants you to be ok and good as you remember them. You don’t have to love the change - and - you can still be ok through it.Death is a transition of form. It’s not final. Energy is never created or destroyed. We choose how we reconnect with loved ones (past and present). And as we navigate the awkwardness of the new chapter of our life, we meet ourselves with grace and compassion along the way If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review - it helps us so much. Change, Trauma + Emotional Regulation

How comfortable are you feeling your emotions? What if you remember you have always done the best you could based on what you knew at the time? What if you had tools to support you in understanding + processing suppressed emotions so you feel better - more vibrant, free and at ease - now?Today the amazing Jenn Kerr is back and we're discussing how change + traumatic events can lead to major emotional dysregulation and suppression. It’s a really powerful  conversation! You’re gonna love it.These are the key takeaways:You are NOT your past. You have navigated life the best you could based on what you knew at the time. Self-compassion + curiosity is key as you take steps to process deeply suppressed emotionsEmotions are energy in motion - they are fluid - and meant to move vs being suppressed. They carry deep wisdom that guides us into greatest alignment, health and easeYou are the witness to your thoughts and your emotions. They are meant to flow through our awareness and activate us into action and / or to be processed out of our body at the moment they are felt (or as soon as it’s safe and appropriate)Cultivating safety + trust within yourself is KEY to processing deeply suppressed emotionsOften the fear we feel about feeling an emotion is much more intense and painful than the actual emotional releaseTrauma can be explained as the wound imprinted on us as the result of a major life-altering eventIf you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review - it helps us so much. Change, grief + mindful living with guest Mikaela Millington

Have you ever experienced immense joy and gratitude while also sensing deep sorrow or yearning for something no longer in your life? When you think of change what comes to mind?Is it memories of excitement? Is it memories of pain and loss?Change is constant and it reminds us of the temporary nature of life. When we resist change and grasp to the past or a future desire, we limit the endless source of love that’s always present and supporting us.In this episode Mikaela Millington and I explore the intersection of grief, change + mindfulness. You’re gonna love it.These are the key points to takeaway:practice pausing intentionally - within the pause we access peace + clarity practice non-attachment + neutrality - you are not your thoughts or any sensations you feel - you are the observer of your thoughts + emotions -  get curious about thembe open - allow life to surprise you (change + grief don't have to be hard experiences to navigate - there can be moments of fun, play and joy too - and in fact, play is a key ingredient to NS regulation / resilience)intentional rest is key to our health. As we prioritize and practice rest, we learn how much we crave it and benefit from it. Often 10min - 1 hour can give us a full reset and support us in navigating the variability of life with more trust and easepractice being where your feet are - the brain goes 90 miles a minute - our body moves much slower. It's ok to take time as you figure out you next step. Patience helps us to feel more at ease in the moment and in lifeIf you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review - it helps us so much. Manifestation, Nervous System Health + Human Design with guest Heather Beresford

Have you heard of human design?Have you heard of manifestation? If so, what comes to mind? Did you know that feeling relaxed + living your design - is a big part of receiving the manifestations you desire quicker and more regularly?Creating a daily routine to simply BE is a big part of transformation and living the life of your dreams.Today my beautiful friend Heather Beresford is here to join us, and we’re chatting manifestation, change and nervous system regulation… with a touch of human design :)These are the key points from our conversation:We are always manifesting - often it is overlooked because it’s so natural - and sometimes it’s what we don’t want because the fear based subconscious beliefs we think 90% of the time are so strongWhen we are living in chronic stress our nervous system is dysregulated, so it is challenging to clearly state what we desire because the higher functions of our brain are “offline” since we are focused on survivalEvery baby step / micro action towards your desire counts. Building a new neural pathway in our brain takes time (min 21 days + practice)Change is a natural part of life. Grief often accompanies change. Tools like breathwork and grounding techniques (orienting, earthing, visualization practices, hand on heart) can help you feel anchored within yourself + more empowered in your life as the exterior world shiftsThe more you listen to and trust your intuition, the easier your desired manifestations unfoldUnderstanding your human design can really help you consciously manifest and build the true life you deeply desireIf you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review - it helps us so much. Grief, death + tools to ease-fully navigate it, with guest Jenn Kerr

Have you ever witnessed someone close to you navigate the death of a loved one? Perhaps you yourself know loss on an intimate level. Grief can be such a heavy and awkward topic. Yet we all experience it. And, death and change are a part of life.Today we are bringing more light and conversation to death + grief - so it’s less uncomfortable and scary - and a bit more approachable…And the wonderful Jennifer Kerr is here to chat all things grief, loss, change and bereavement.Jennifer is a qualifying registered psychotherapist and has been a grief and bereavement counsellor at Hospice Georgian Triangle for over five years. Jennifer works primarily with complex grief and runs the disenfranchised support groups such as substance related grief and grief around sudden deaths. Continuing to meet the unique needs in the community, Jennifer has a passion for normalizing the grief and bereavement journey.https://hospicegeorgiantriangle.com/what-is-grief-counselling/These are the key points from our conversation:Grief is a natural response to change and intensifies with the death of a loved one based on the depth of connection shared with the personGrief is complex. It often includes a range of emotions. It’s not linear and can take time to process. There is not right way and no timeline with grief.Your feelings are not too much. You are not a burden. It’s ok / encouraged to reach out for support.Death is life changing for the people grieving the loved one. Be gentle with yourself as you adjust and change and adapt to your “new normal”.when we are living in chronic stress our nervous system is dysregulated, so big changes - like the death of a loved one can create a stronger stress response of fight, flight or freeze. When this happens, it is challenging to think and communicate clearly because the prefrontal cortex of the brain is “offline” since we are focused on survival. Simple tools like noticing your senses + body scanning can help you feel more grounded when you feel out of whack. Breathing exercises, Walking, running and yoga can be especially helpful to process bigger waves of grief and support nervous system regulation If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review - it helps us so much. Grief, bravery + vulnerability with Sarah Kinlin

Grief is like an itchy sweater that you can’t take off.Sometimes it’s the only thing we can think about. Sometimes we get distracted by life and it becomes a dull sensation in the background or disappears all together. Until we get triggered and reminded of a memory..What is your relationship with grief? What have you learned from leaning into discomfort and being brave? In this episode we explore grief, bravery, forgiveness and gratitude. You’re gonna love it :)And if you’re navigating a big change right now or seeking tools to process grief from previous events, I’m hosting a workshop with Rooted Woodland “Grief, Grace + Gratitude” on Nov 9 in the Blue Mountains: https://ediegudaitiswellness.com/schedule/And if you’re not in the GTA, please check out my online program, Journey Through Grief. It includes breathing practices and somatic release tools to help you process grief so you feel more integrated and at ease: https://edie-gudaitis-wellness.mykajabi.com/offers/h2hLngJQ/checkoutThese are the key points from our conversation:There is no “right way” to grieve. We all process it differently based on our own relationship and attachment with the loved one who has passed and we all express our emotions differently - based on what feels safe within our own bodyIt’s not about getting over grief. It’s something we move through. It’s important to process the emotions when we feel them, so we gain the deeper wisdom beneath them.Often our own fear of the immensity of grief or our judgement / criticism of our experience with the emotions we feel, intensifies our pain and suffering. When we neutrally observe the sensations and allow them to move through us, we notice they often aren’t as bad as we imagined they might be Forgiveness is the pathway to freedom. We forgive to feel free + at peace within our own heart. And we forgive others to bring peace and space the relationship we sharedChoose to be brave + vulnerable. It supports your resilience as you continue to grow + move through lifeRemember to practice gratitude. It helps you see the gifts and lessons in ALL of your experiences (the joyful + peaceful and the more painful ones) and it expands your capacity to give and receive loveIf you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review - it helps us so much. Stress DETOX Podcast - S1 - Ep 12: Stress, Digestion + Nutrition Hacks with Leah Van Dolder

There's a saying: "we are what we eat"...And it's true - what, when and how we eat contributes to our overall health, wellbeing and longevity. What we eat impacts how we feel. How we feel about ourselves + food in general, impacts what, when and how we eat - it's all intricately linked. When we feel stressed out we're more likely skip meals, or go for the quick fix, or self-soothe with "comfort" foods.Butttttt when we eat comfort foods all the time lots of carbs, sugar and fat - and later at night - it places additional stress on our digestive system. Why? because decadent foods are a lot to digest + when eating them late at night, our metabolism is slowing down for sleep, so the combination creates more stress on our body than actual relief.Quick fixes, are OK once in a while. They are not recommended everyday - especially if we're already experiencing IBS, bloating, gas, GERD, sleep issues, brain fog, low libido or other imbalances. In this episode, Leah and I dive a bit deeper into:- our eating habits + food choices- how... what, when and how we eat helps us feel + be our best while also reducing stress in our body and mindAND- mindset: how our relationship with food - our judgments, narratives or negative self talk about it, impacts our choices... Ultimately, when we feel good in our body, we're more active. When we're more active, we crave healthier foods - like lean protein and more produce. Whereas, when we feel disconnected, stressed or overwhelmed all the time, we're more likely to binge watch TV, eat "junk food" and retreat from social opportunities or exercise routines. It's a really great episode! We're excited for you to give it a listen :)A bit more about Leah:Leah is a Registered Dietitian with over 15  years of experience specializing in women’s weight loss, wellness, and habit change. She’s passionate about empowering you to elevate your health, nutrition, and mindset so you can feel confident in your skin, connected to your body, and have the energy to do more of the things that make you feel alive. Leah’s known for her no-BS and practical approach to living a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Episode 10: The power of Breathwork for Stress Management

How often do you check in, and notice your breathing? The pace, depth, frequency, temperature. Our breath is an amazing tool and teacher within us. Our breath can help indicate when we are locked in a sympathetic stress response AND in a relaxed state. And our breath is the fastest tool to help shift from stress + tension to presence and ease. For this reason (and many more) breathing is essential to managing + reducing stress. When locked in a fight / flight response, the breath is short, fast and shallow (predominantly felt in the chest and shoulders). When in a state of flow, joy and comfort, the breath is longer, deeper and slower (reaching into the low belly and expanding the full capacity of the lungs). In this episode, Ashlee and I discuss the power of the breath for nervous system regulation. The breath can help us process intense emotions (like fear, anger, anxiety and shame), cultivate inner calm, navigate challenging life experiences, AND more!Listen along to learn new ways to breathe, so you feel most present, connected and at ease - in all areas of your life - now :)A bit more about Ashlee Livingstone:Ashlee is a Personal Growth Coach and Breathwork Facilitator who holds space for people who hold a lot of space for others. Working with leaders, parents and community builders Ashlee helps them regulate their nervous system, better manage their stress and relationships, and learn to not only create space for themselves but move through their challenges so they can get back to supporting their clients, team and family. She works with people who cannot afford to stay stuck because they have lives to impact.Ashlee focuses on stress management, nervous system regulation, healthy sleep, emotional intelligence, limiting beliefs and self doubt. She knows from experience you cannot give from an empty cup and is on a mission to help her clients continue to make an impact without burning out or sacrificing their wellbeing in the process. Episode 9: Stress + Addictions - Interview with Jeanne Foot

Unmanaged stress and anxiety can lead to various addictive tendencies / behaviours to self-soothe in the moment. In many cases, addictions serve as a distraction from the pain, uncertainty or discomfort of a situation. In North American culture, we are quick to judge addictions - most often linking them with substance abuse - like drugs and alcohol - when truthfully, people are addicted to work, fitness, social media, sugar, caffeine and more - yet it is't judged as harshly or seen as a "concern".In this episode, I interview Jeanne Foot about her work with helping clients heal from addictions, and how addictive patterns relate soooo deeply to unprocessed past trauma and chronic stress.Jeanne is the Founder of The Recovery Concierge, a boutique with a suite of services designed to help those struggling with the impact of substance. Jeanne is trained in Somatic Relational Therapy, Compassionate Inquire and is Certified International Addiction counsellor and Recovery Coach. She has been a guest on the "This Naked Mind Podcast" and "The SHAIR Podcast", and has been published in The Canadian Mental Health Journal on behalf of her contribution for herwork with The Family Navigation Project at Sunnybrook. You can find Jeanne at:Instagram: @the_recovery_concierge or the @theholisticreocveryspecialistTwitter: @recvryconciergeFacebook: http://facebook.co/therecoveryconciergeDisclaimer: I am NOT a doctor. Episode 7: The Vagus Nerve + Stress

Ohhhhh the Vagus Nerve.A very important part of managing and reducing stress in the body.Put simply, the Vagus Nerve is the communicator between the brain and the body that signals the Sympathetic or Parasympathetic Nervous System to kick in during a stress response. The Vagus Nerve is not fully developed at childhood, thus experiences that we had between age 0 - 7 can greatly impact our perspective with fear and the strength of our communication signal between the brain and the body to communicate safety + relaxation or threat and protection. There are many exercises that can help us strengthen the signal between our brain and body via the Vagus Nerve so we more easily self-regulate in everyday life AND most especially during times of stress / discomfort.Happy Listening!Disclaimer: I am NOT a doctor. When we feel stressed it can throw everything out of whack - digestion, hormones, sleep, cognition, intimacy, performance, creativity and more.Sleep is foundational to our health + wellbeing. When we struggle with falling asleep, staying a sleep or waking up feeling rested, it's important to reflect on our morning + evening routine AND our thoughts. If we shoot out of bed in the morning and run full speed ahead into the day and just crash at night, we may not get the deeper sleep that supports us in feeling rested, responsive (vs reactive) and more at ease during the day.If we watch or read or listen to really intense / fear provoking content before bed, it can trigger a stress response leading to poor sleep and negatively influence our subconscious mind + our thoughts when we awake in the morning.Listen along to learn key tips / practices to reduce stress AND support your sleep cycle + productivity during the day :)Disclaimer: I am NOT a doctor. This is my perspective on the topic, anchored in the work of various thought leaders + physicians (like Andrew Huberman, Irene Lyons, Peter Levine, Joe Dispenza + Dr. Gabor Mate to name a few)  paired with my own life experiences and healing journey from burnout, grief, severe injury and other events. Episode 5: The Power of Words + Language and Stress - pt 2

Are you  a people pleaser?Do you ever associate with imposter syndrome?I know I have in the past. Both are connected to fear, lack and scarcity. With people pleasing there is often a fear that we will lose connection or be disliked if we don't meet the other persons needs - or - our assumption of them. With imposter syndrome, we often allow narratives anchored in shame (not being worthy of what we desire) and fear (not feeling ready, or not being, knowing or doing enough) to drive the bus.In both cases, they create a sense of dis-ease (lack of safety) within our body and can create feelings of stress, anxiety and overwhelm... As discussed in Episode 4, remembering that we create and give life meaning is a game changer.YOU can redefine words to improve your own wellbeing + support your own beliefs whenever you choose.Listen along to learn more :)Disclaimer: I am NOT a doctor.
