By understanding your specific body metrics and positional requirements for the riding you want to do, you can eliminate the guesswork and buy with confidence. 175 PART 1 - What Cycling is Really Doing To Your Feet & How You Can Stop It
Left unchecked cycling can really ruin your feet. The simple fact is that humans are not designed to ride bikes, we’re born to run and walk so cycling actually proves to be a challenge to our biomechanics. Thankfully there are solutions to preserve good movement and stability when riding in the form of insoles. But what type should you use, custom moulded, proprioceptive, off-the shelf or none at all? Matt and Wei give an overview of why we use insoles in cycling, how this relates to your foot mechanics, and all the questions around the cycling foot. Is pronation a bad thing? Are low arches a bad thing? Are high arches a bad thing? And why everyone would rather buy a new set of wheels that insoles even if insoles gave you more watts ;)Hopefully this brings some more awareness to why bike fitters love to obsess over your feet, shoes, cleats and insoles. 172 Craft, Therapy or Science? - Discussing Modern Bike Fitter Skills: Jon Underhill, Core Bike Fit
Bike fitting is often seen as process driven by technology, precise measurements and a scientific doctrine. These CAN be part of a bike fit experience but it's all for nothing if a bike fitter fails to communicate the meaning behind the methods, findings and results to their rider in a way that resonates. This week I chat with fellow bike fitter Jon Underhill from Core Bike Fit, about the little talked-of 'soft' skills that, I feel, are more important than ever in our modern, digital age. We discuss if fitting is a craft, science or therapy and whether there's ever a good time to use magnets to affect rider symmetry in a bike fit. Let's go! 168 Should (Can) You Periodize Your Bike Fit?
Over the years, bike fitting has managed to create an expectation and desire from riders that it is a one-and-done process. Many riders, after they have had a bike fit will rigidly stick to that position and are afraid to change their fit no matter what.Even though they recognise that their body, goals, and skills will change over time...So this week the team explore how we can take the concept of periodization in training and apply it to your bike fit.How and what should you change your fit?And when should you not change your bike fit? 146 Why Bike Fitting Doesn't Work...
Some riders don't believe in bike fitting...Even some of those who have booked sessions with us, don't really think it's going to work... Is this the same reason why so many who visit physios for treatment don't end up doing their prescribed exercises? After a recent fit that spurred some heated discussion, Mat & Wei explore the psychology around getting good results as a movement practitioner...What are the mental barriers for patients and riders who need help, and how you can help yourself to get the best results from your practitioner. 144 Finding Your Rhythm: Lessons From S&C Coach Turned Triathlete - Chris Jillard
We met Chris back in early 2025 at a bike fitter's meetup where he stood out as being the only non-bike fitter in the room. But as such, he was the most animated, curious and asked the most interesting questions. As a strength coach who has recently taken up triathlon, we had to get Chris on the show.We explore how he places a big emphasis on a 'human first' approach, why strength work is critical for cyclists & triathletes if they want longevity in their sport. And how Chris himself balances the needs of strength training vs. endurance training and how they compliment each other. If you're thinking about how to structure your off-season and build your foundations for next year, this episode is definitely worth a listen. 142 The Dirtiest Word In Bike Fitting...
Comfort is the prerequisite for performance. If you are not comfortable, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to perform to your potential. However, is 'comfort' still seen as a 'dirty' word when we are talking about performance? Is our currently cultural stigma for comfort = the opposite of performance doing us a disservice. This is the premise for this week's discussion. The team get talking about role comfort plays in your hierarchy of priorities, whether drummers need a 'drum fit' and whether or not pre-hab even really exists...If you have any further questions for us, join the conversation at: https://www.instagram.com/cyclingdemystified/Are you 'bike-fit curious'?
