Is your Christmas Day plan supporting your mental health or causing more stress

Christmas Day can be a wonderful time of connection, joy, and celebration – but for many of us, it can also be a source of stress and anxiety. With so much focus on making everything "perfect," from timing the meal to hosting guests, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But here’s the truth: rigid plans and high expectations can often create unnecessary pressure. What if the secret to a calmer, more enjoyable Christmas is flexibility? In this video, we explore how adopting a more relaxed mindset can make a big difference. Planning is helpful, especially when it comes to key moments like cooking times, but it’s equally important to give yourself permission to go with the flow. Here’s why: Your meal won’t go from perfect to ruined if it’s left to rest for an extra 30 minutes. The King’s speech can be watched later – it doesn’t have to be live at 3 o’clock. Small delays or changes in plans don’t have to derail the day. Christmas is about connection, not perfection. By allowing space for flexibility, you can reduce stress levels, be more present with loved ones, and actually enjoy the day. So, if you’ve ever felt the pressure of trying to stick to a minute-by-minute schedule, this video is for you. Let’s rethink how we approach Christmas, with mental health and well-being at the heart of it. Remember: it’s not about getting everything “right” – it’s about making the day meaningful, manageable, and memorable. 🎄 Watch now and start planning a Christmas Day that supports your mental health. Tune in as we dig into how these “I’m not good enough” beliefs can hold us back from career goals, personal connections, and even our sense of potential. Additionally, specific interventions like psychoeducation, equipment (e.g., headphones, weighted blankets), and therapy can help individuals cope and thrive despite their sensory challenges. The hosts emphasise the importance of understanding and accommodating sensory sensitivities to create inclusive environments and provide appropriate support. The Talk Room: Episode 24 Unravelling Mythomania: Understanding and Healing Compulsive Lying

Welcome to our latest episode, where we delve into the intriguing world of mythomania – a condition characterised by compulsive lying. Today, we explore the psychological roots of mythomania, its impact on personal relationships, and strategies for support and healing. Understanding Mythomania Mythomania, or pathological lying, is a psychological condition marked by chronic and often elaborate deceit. Unlike occasional lies told to avoid trouble or spare feelings, mythomania involves a compulsive need to fabricate stories without a clear motive. This behaviour can stem from various psychological factors such as low self-esteem, attention-seeking tendencies, or a means of escapism. The Impact on Personal Relationships The compulsive lying associated with mythomania can deeply strain personal relationships. Trust, the cornerstone of any relationship, becomes fragile as loved ones grapple with distinguishing truth from fiction. Emotional strain ensues, leading to feelings of betrayal and frustration. Effective communication becomes challenging, and the affected individual may face social isolation as relationships deteriorate due to persistent dishonesty. Strategies for Support and Healing Addressing mythomania requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses both professional support and personal self-care: Professional Counselling: Seeking guidance from a trained therapist is essential for identifying the underlying causes of mythomania and developing strategies for truth-telling. Cognitive-behavioural techniques can help reframe thought patterns and rebuild trust within relationships. Personal Self-Care: Engaging in self-care practices can complement counselling efforts and support the journey towards healing. This may include self-reflection to understand triggers, mindfulness techniques to increase self-awareness, journaling to track behaviours and emotions, and maintaining healthy habits such as regular exercise, nutrition, and sleep. Moving Forward Mythomania presents unique challenges, but with the right support and commitment to self-improvement, individuals affected by compulsive lying can find a path towards authenticity and healing. By addressing the underlying psychological issues and implementing healthy communication patterns, relationships can be rebuilt on a foundation of honesty and trust. Thank you for joining us in this exploration of mythomania. If you or someone you know is struggling with compulsive lying, remember that help is available, and taking the first step towards understanding and healing is a powerful act of self-care. The Talk Room Episode 19 Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

In this podcast episode, the focus is on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that tends to emerge during the darker months of autumn and winter, particularly in regions with reduced natural sunlight, such as the UK. While the exact cause of SAD remains elusive, the discussion delves into prominent theories, with a spotlight on the impact of diminished sunlight exposure. The episode explores how the lack of sunlight may disrupt the proper functioning of the hypothalamus, a crucial part of the brain, potentially influencing the production of melatonin—a hormone that regulates sleep. Elevated levels of melatonin during SAD episodes could contribute to increased feelings of sleepiness. Additionally, the podcast touches on serotonin, a natural chemical affecting mood, appetite, and sleep, emphasizing how decreased sunlight might lead to lower serotonin levels, thereby linking to depressive feelings and disturbances in the body's internal clock. Listeners gain insights into compassion-focused therapy, which encourages individuals experiencing SAD to acknowledge the difficulties they face without self-blame. The importance of self-care practices is highlighted as a means to navigate through challenging times. Notably, regular exercise is spotlighted as a powerful tool in combating SAD, with aerobic activities releasing endorphins—key neurotransmitters associated with improved mood. Tune in to this enlightening episode to gain a deeper understanding of Seasonal Affective Disorder and discover practical approaches to cope with its impact on mental well-being during the darker seasons.

Episode 8 EMDR & Trauma Therapy

Trauma: A distressing event that leaves a person with a memory of that event that could be simply an image or symptoms from the event which could lead to PTSD or complex PTSD. PTSD: post traumatic stress disorder, classic symptoms of PTSD can flashbacks and nightmares which can affect daily life. The impact of not getting a formal diagnosis of trauma is that there could be confusion with symptoms and with trauma they could have secondary symptoms such as anxiety or depression and the underlying trauma may not even be recognised. There is also many different types of trauma, such as being in an abusive relationship but the problem is the person affected by this may not see this as a problem, simply as every day life which could result in the trauma not being identified and thus treated, only the secondary symptoms which may not get to the root cause. Problems with trauma: people often describe themselves as losing themselves or feeling vulnerable. People often feel they do not feel safe going out anymore or trust anyone else (of the trauma involved other people). Treatment and formal diagnosis will help with all of these complex problems, such as EMDR. EMDR - Eye movement desensitisation reprocessing. EMDR, helps with trauma, anxiety and depression. It is a structured approach to help people to safely process traumatic memories, in time helping them to overcome the stress they have been experiencing. Research suggests EMDR is just as affective as CBT and can really help improve their quality of life.
