Trauma Healing: Finding Your Identity Beyond the Shards

Have you ever felt like your worst experiences define who you are? A painful moment, traumatic event, or difficult season can color how you see yourself, others, and even God.Trauma has a way of embedding itself into our identity, convincing us that what happened to us is who we are. Grieving Your Way: Three Things You Don't Need to Do

Grief does not come with a rulebook. Yet society often places unspoken expectations that make the journey even harder. In this episode of A Better Way to Heal, cohosts Elly and Isa share three things you do not need to do while grieving, from pretending you are fine to following a strict timeline.   They begin by challenging the pressure to care for everyone else while neglecting your own emotional needs. Drawing from personal stories and biblical wisdom, they explore how well meaning friends can unintentionally make someone’s grief about themselves. With compassion, they offer practical guidance on creating boundaries and honoring your own healing process, as well as insights for supporters who want to truly help without adding to the mental load. The conversation deepens as Elly and Isa dismantle the myth that grief must look a certain way. Vulnerability, they explain, requires discernment, but acknowledging your true emotions creates authentic connections. They emphasize that emotions will ebb and flow. Feeling okay one day and overwhelmed the next is part of the process, not a failure.Perhaps most freeing is their discussion of timelines. They explain why the five stages of grief were never meant to be sequential steps, illustrating through personal stories of losing their mothers how grief can resurface unexpectedly years or even decades later. They also point to biblical examples like Jesus grieving Lazarus and John the Baptist to show that even perfect faith does not erase sorrow, but it does provide hope within the pain.Whether you are grieving the loss of a loved one, a broken relationship, an unfulfilled dream, or even lamenting the state of the world, this conversation offers permission to grieve authentically and gently. Connect with us on Social Media or Visit our website!Website: eleanorbrowncounseling.com/Facebook URL: facebook.com/EleanorBrownCounseling/Instagram URL: instagram.com/eleanorbrowncounseling/Bookstore: eleanorbrowncounseling.com/store

What Is Shame The Invisible Emotion Inside Out 2 Missed

Inside Out 2 skips shame; here is what shame is, how it hides under other feelings, and one small step to start healing. Ever wonder why shame was not featured among the emotions in Inside Out 2 If you have asked what is shame you are not alone. This powerful and often invisible emotion works behind the scenes, shaping how we experience everything else.Shame has a unique way of hiding within other feelings. When you feel embarrassed, shame may whisper you are not good enough. When you lash out in anger, shame can be the hidden driver making you feel inadequate. Unlike fleeting emotions, shame digs into identity and can start a cycle of negative thoughts that colors how we see ourselves and how we relate to others. What makes shame challenging is how well it disguises itself. Many people do not realize they are experiencing shame because it presents as anxiety, perfectionism, withdrawal, or aggression. This stealth quality is why so many say I do not deal with shame while still being shaped by it. Naming what is shame in your own story is the first step toward healing. Once we can identify those thoughts, we can challenge them and begin to reclaim worth. Remember, guilt says I did something wrong and can guide healthy change. Shame says there is something wrong with me and keeps us stuck. The move from shame to hope starts with grace, truth, and small steps that build worth and belonging. By understanding how this invisible emotion operates in our emotional landscape, we can move toward self compassion and authenticity.Ready to see if unhealthy shame is affecting your life Take the Shame Quiz: https://www.eleanorbrowncounseling.com/shame-quiz-freebieConnect with us on Social Media or Visit our website!Website: eleanorbrowncounseling.com/Facebook URL: facebook.com/EleanorBrownCounseling/Instagram URL: instagram.com/eleanorbrowncounseling/Bookstore: eleanorbrowncounseling.com/store

In this episode, Elly and Isa unpack how trauma affects the body, why rest can feel impossible, and what real healing looks like.Through personal stories and a faith-informed lens, they explore how childhood wounds affect your health, relationships, and spiritual life. From migraines and weight gain to emotional disconnection, the effects of toxic stress run deep. Emerging science, like epigenetics, supports what Scripture has said all along: unhealed pain can be passed from one generation to the next, but that cycle can be broken.Healing begins with honest reflection—not perfection. You can name where you are without settling there. Rest is more than sleep; it's the ability to reflect, be present, and find gratitude in the moment. Accountability and empathy can coexist, helping us support others without enabling unhealthy patterns. If you're ready to move out of survival mode and into a place of peace, start with a few small but meaningful steps. You’re Not Broken: A Trauma Therapist’s Real-Life Story of Shame, Self-Compassion, and Emotional Healing

Shame lurks in the shadows of our minds, whispering that we’re not enough, unlovable, or damaged beyond repair. But what if those whispers are lies — and there’s a better way?In this intimate episode of Shame-Free Sundays, I share a personal moment that brought my own shame spiral front and center: a livestream gone wrong. As a trauma therapist, I often help others navigate self-blame, but even I’m not immune to the voice that says, “You messed up. You always mess up.”What I do with that voice, though, is where the healing happens.Join me as I unpack the difference between healthy self-correction and toxic shame, and how a simple tool — like my visual reminder Harmony the Bear — helped me walk through a tough moment with grace instead of condemnation. We’ll explore the intersection of faith and therapy, and what it means to untangle our worth from our performance. This episode is for anyone who’s ever felt defective, stuck in self-blame, or afraid to try again. The truth is, you’re not broken. Healthy Shame vs. Toxic Shame: How to Tell the Difference

Do you recognize that nagging voice inside that constantly whispers "I'm not enough" or "I'm damaged goods"? That’s shame talking. In this episode of Shame-Free Sundays, we tackle the critical difference between healthy shame that helps you grow and toxic shame that keeps you stuck.Through three simple, relatable stories — breaking something valuable, forgetting a promise to a friend, and snapping at a loved one — we explore how mistakes can lead either to momentary, healthy guilt or a spiral of toxic self-condemnation. The key isn’t the mistake itself, but how we process it. Do we learn and move forward, or do we let it define our worth? Many of us believe beating ourselves up will prevent future mistakes, but that approach usually leads to deeper shame, not growth. When we live in toxic shame, it not only hurts us — it also impacts the people we love.If you’re ready to start recognizing shame’s grip and moving toward healing, take the free shame quiz at www.EleanorBrownCounseling.com/shame-quiz-freebie. A Better Way: The PodCast - A Midnight Calling

Hearing the Divine Call: From Moses to Samuel - A Journey of Faith A conversation about all things related to A Better Way, a book by Eleanor L. BrownThis Episode:But in spite of all this royal heritage, the Lord had so stripped Moses that when he heard God's voice out of the burning bush, he could only exclaim, “I am not worthy of the work of the Lord.” In response to Moses' statement of unworthiness, God said, “Certainly, I Am will be with thee” (Exodus 3:12)One night, as he was falling asleep, he heard a voice calling out to him. God asks what Moses has in his hand, and Moses answers, "A staff" ("a rod" in the KJV version). The staff is miraculously transformed into a snake and then back into a staff.David tells us that he thought upon God as he lay on his bed, and meditated on Him in the watches of the night (Psalm 63:5).And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day Christ Jesus returns. Philippians 1:6When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham!
