Hyper-independent with Mid-life Anxiety? Why and How God Can Help

You were raised to handle things yourself — figure it out, don't ask, don't need. And for a long time, that worked. Until it didn't.If you're a midlife woman wrestling with anxiety, chronic worry, or overwhelm, there's a good chance the very strength that kept you standing has quietly become the ceiling on your healing. In this episode, we're taking an honest look at hyper-independence — that deeply ingrained habit of going it alone — and how it may be feeding your anxiety more than fixing it.I'll walk you through a short self-assessment to help you recognize your own patterns, and then we'll talk about what it actually looks like to pause self-reliance aka hyper-independence — not abandon your capability, but open a door for God to move in the places your best thinking can't reach. There's a room in your heart where Jesus is already seated and already asking, "What's going on?" This episode will help you find your way to that table.Get The Anchored Life twice-monthly email. You don't have 48 hours. Maybe you don't even have 8. But what if 30 minutes could open something in your soul that years of busyness has kept closed? In this episode, I introduce a mini spiritual retreat for women titled You Are Known: Who God Is and Who You Are to God— a three-session guided experience designed to be done in your car, your closet, a park bench, or wherever you can find a quiet corner of the world. It's for you if you've felt like God is somewhere out there but not quite here with you. And it's for you if you're ready to make space for something real.I'll walk you through how the retreat works and share a sample from Session 1 so you can see exactly what you're stepping into.Get The Anchored Life twice-monthly email. #1 Reason Your Quick Fix For Anxiety Doesn't Work

Have you ever reached for something — a drink, a pill, a buzz — just to take the edge off? You're not alone, and there's no shame in admitting it. In this honest, no-judgment conversation, Terri pulls back the curtain on the complicated relationship between anxiety and the quick fixes we reach for when we just want to feel better — from alcohol and THC to prescribed benzodiazepines like Ativan.Drawing from her own personal experience and years as a nurse, Terri shares what she's seen — and lived — when it comes to chasing calm through substances. The hard truth? The buzz wears off. The euphoria fades. And the anxiety? It's still there, waiting. This episode isn't about labeling your choices as good or bad. It's about asking a deeper question: Are you managing your anxiety, or just escaping it for a while? If you're ready to stop dulling the noise and start doing the deeper work, this episode is your starting point.📍 Visit anchorednotanxious.com for resources to help you manage anxiety, overwhelm, and worry — because friend, you deserve more than temporary relief.Get The Anchored Life twice-monthly email. Ditch Your Plan A (Anxiety) for Plan B (Belief)-Moses Did It, You Can Too

Moses spent 40 years running from fear before he ever heard from a burning bush. And honestly? I think that's more relatable than we realize.Because most of us don't leap from crippling anxiety straight into unshakeable trust in God. We wander through the fear territory first. We doubt. We run. We try to figure it out on our own — and we end up in Midian like Moses. But here's what I love about Moses's story: it wasn't over. The learning territory came after the fear. And that's where something beautiful started to grow.In this episode, I'm unpacking Moses's journey through three territories — Fear, Learning, and Growth — how you can move from Plan A (the anxious response) to a Plan B (the belief response).Because automatic trust isn't a realistic goal for most of us. But a gentle redirect? That's something we can practice. 💛Get The Anchored Life twice-monthly email. Increase Joy and Enthusiasm When Life Gets Serious - Set Your Intention

One evening as I lie in bed overwhelmed by everything happening in the world around me, these words rested on my mind: Terri, you weren't meant to bear these burdens. These are mine. Can I just say — sometimes we don't even realize how much we're carrying until we're completely buried under it.Jesus never meant for us to hold the weight of what we cannot control. And yet here we are, scrolling, absorbing, grieving for things far beyond our reach — and wondering why our joy is absent. This episode hits so close to home for me. I want to walk you through a simple but powerful practice: setting a daily intention. Pet Parent Help For the Grief That Starts Before Goodbye

If you've ever found yourself pre-mourning an ailing pet who's still alive, you're not imagining things—you're experiencing anticipatory grief. And if you've had someone tell you that losing your dog "can't compare" to losing a human? I'm so sorry. Grief is grief, and there are no qualifiers. In this episode, I'm sharing my story of losing Bosco during one of the loneliest seasons of my life, and why pet parents carry a unique kind of burden that most people don't understand. You'll learn why anticipatory grief actually happens and practical ways to care for yourself through one of the hardest goodbye you'll ever make. Whether you're watching your fur baby decline or still processing a loss from years ago, this conversation will meet you with the validation and tools you need. https://therapyforpetpeople.com/blog/coping-with-anticipatory-grief-pet-losshttps://www.dvm360.com/view/understanding-anticipatory-grief-in-pet-ownershttps://www.lapoflove.com/blog/pet-loss-support/how-to-deal-with-anticipatory-griefhttps://www.aplb.org/anticipatory-grief/Get The Anchored Life twice-monthly email. When You Wish Jesus Would Just Show Up (And Why He Doesn't Need To)

When anxiety hits hard, have you ever wished Jesus would just speak out loud or sit beside you? You're not alone. Even the disciples struggled when Jesus said He was leaving—until He promised them the Holy Spirit as their Counselor. But what does that actually mean for managing anxiety today? In this episode, I explore how the Holy Spirit functions like a professional counselor: listening, revealing truth, redirecting, and interceding when you’re overwhelmed. If you've been treating the Holy Spirit like a distant concept instead of an active presence, this conversation will change how you approach your hardest days.Scripture References (NIV, NLT):John 14:27, Romans 8:6b, Romans 8:26-27, Ephesians 4:30, 1 Thessalonians 5:17Get The Anchored Life twice-monthly email. What Nature Trails Teach Us About Waiting on God

What if trust isn't about getting what you want when you want it—but about learning a path that never becomes a dead end?In this episode, I use the imagery of a nature trail to explore what it means to truly trust God when you're waiting, when answers haven't come, or when the outcome isn't what you prayed for. We'll walk through the three movements of trust. This isn't a pep talk about positive thinking. It's an honest conversation about the growth that happens in the waiting, and about believing that God's eyes search for our hearts—not our religious performance. If you're standing at a signpost with arrows pointing toward worry, overthinking, and "what if" scenarios, this episode offers you a different direction. Get The Anchored Life twice-monthly email. A Revolutionary Faith That Scares Worry into Silence

Monster fires in the California mountains consume everything in their path. It takes only a spark to start a raging blaze. Something that would scare it into silence? There is—if you're willing to be reckless and ruthless.God’s Word gives us examples of women and men who were reckless and ruthless, in a way that brought them closer to God. How do you ignite a reckless, ruthless faith fire? Listen to this episode and discover what you need as fire starter to get a blazing faith and trust. Jeremiah said the Word of God is like a fire in his heart that cannot be contained. You're More Relevant Than You Feel (Even As Life Says Otherwise)

A high school friend messaged me after decades: "I've thought about you 8 million times since 1978." She remembered a powerful conversation about faith and obedience—a lesson she'd carried with her and shared with countless people over the years. The twist? She had the wrong Terri. That wasn't me.But here's what struck me: That other Teri remained relevant all these years. Her words rippled forward in ways she'll never fully know.Maybe you're feeling less relevant then you did ten years ago. The feeling is genuine, but the facts don't support it. I worked with someone who moved the boundary lines daily. Some days she was warm and open. Other days? Ice cold. I never knew which version I'd get. Laughter Yoga with Lynne West and Terri - Audio Version

In this episode, I have guest Lynne West VanHeusden. She is a certified Laughter Yoga Teacher and leader.  Lynne is also certified in Ashtanga Yoga, Chair Yoga and other vibrational modalities. Lynne has been an avid Laughter Yoga practitioner for 16 years. (Watch the video version on YouTube at Anchored Not Anxious.)What is Laughter Yoga? It may sound strange but Laughter Yoga is the practice of laughing for no reason. We laugh for exercise just like others jog or lift weights. We work out our mind and body with levity and lightness. An exercise laugh has the exact same effect on the body as natural laughter and in a group with eye contact laughter becomes very natural very quickly. Laughter and stress reduction is contagious.Just 10–15 minutes daily reduces stress, energizes the body, and promotes mental calmness and positivity. Scientifically proven to strengthen immunity, enhance brain oxygen, uplift mood, and foster social connections—reducing isolation. Regular practice builds emotional resilience, helping you face challenges with optimism.Join Lynne and I as we do a few of the exercises together. For more: www.laughteryoga.orgContact Lynne West VanHeusden at www.facebook.com/Laughing SwansYogaGet The Anchored Life twice-monthly email. Are you reading your Bible but feeling like you're just going through the motions? Like gulping food without tasting it? 4 Reasons to Let Jesus Create Your To Do List

Ever wonder what would actually be on your to-do list if Jesus was the one writing it? Spoiler: it's probably not "organize the garage" or "respond to 47 emails."In this episode, I share four things I believe Jesus would want on your daily list—and they're all surprisingly doable. Listen to the Holy Spirit's nudge the first time (not the third). Pray with people in the moment instead of promising to pray later. Ask Jesus for an "eye and ear upgrade" so you can see and hear others the way He does. And get yourself a new language wardrobe. These aren't complicated spiritual disciplines. They're simple practices that show your faith in action and make a tangible difference in your relationships. Ready to swap your to-do list for His?  Get The Anchored Life twice-monthly email. Centering Prayer for Emotional Balance

What if you could reset your entire emotional and spiritual state in just a few minutes? That's the power of centering prayer. In this episode, I guide you through a specific centering prayer practice based on Jeremiah 17:7-8—a prayer that reminds you to root yourself in God’s strength. I'll show you how to coordinate this prayer with your breathing to create a rhythm that calms your mind, settles your emotions, and grounds your body. We'll explore why saying "I trust the Lord" in present tense (not future tense) makes all the difference, and how this assertive statement affects both you and the spiritual world around you. Get The Anchored Life twice-monthly email. Why She Trusts God Series: Author Lisa Woolery

Welcome to Anchored Not Anxious. I'm Terri Hutchinson, your host. I'm continuing the monthly series, “Why She Trusts God”, and I have guest author Lisa Woolery. She is the author of The Widow's Comeback and the Widow's Comeback 365 Grief Calendar and Workbook.  Lisa was widowed six years ago, and as you can imagine, that causes a lot of anxiety.  In her recovery she learned a little bit more about trusting God and  learned a little bit more about letting go of  anxiety. She wrote her book because she felt like God wanted her to be in community with other widows. She used her journals and blog posts and fashioned these into a memoir with the intent that she didn't want a widow to ever feel alone on her journey.  She had read books and memoirs from other widows, but really felt a lot of them were candy coated. The wonderful thing about her memoir in her words, "is that I told the truth and I told about all the hairy warts, all the mistakes I made because like I said, I don't want a widow to feel alone or like she's grieving wrong." You can find Lisa on Instagram and on Facebook at the Widow's Comeback. She has a website, widowscomeback.com and there she offers a freebie, Principles You Can Embrace to Help You Move Through Grief. And then of course, her Amazon author page is Lisa Woolery and that's where you're gonna find The Widows Comeback Memoir and Widows Comeback 365 Grief Calendar and Workbook.  And soon, she's going to publish a guided journal.  Thank you for listening!
