Tally Koren on finding freedom and purpose after 50 (and 60!)
Tally Koren arrived in London with 1 suitcase and a dream in the late 90th, and against all odds became an international Singer - Songwriter. Despite family objections and countless music business rejections, what kept her going was, turning every minus to plus, taking every refusal to become better, and every hard situation to do something good to herself and others. Her turning point to fulfill her childhood dreams and to become a singer happened at the age of 26, while she was in a very un-happy marriage.A singing teacher immediately recognised her talent and thought that her low voice is reminding of Karen carpenter. In 2007 Tally made the decision to make her first album and not to wait for the record company.Despite one of the top radios plugger telling her that she doesn’t have a chance to make it nationally being over 40. She made the choice to listen to the words of her song “Beauty of The Duty “saying “the only thing that holds you back is you”. Her song became a National success on the BBC radio 3 weeks later. Many of my other singles been play-listed with over 1000 radio stations in the UK and around the world.Performances include: the Royal Albert Hall, The National Arboretum, The BelgradeTheatre, Pizza on the Park, Pizza Express, The JW3, Electric Carousel, The Soho Revue Bar, the Forum (Kentish Town), Tate Britain to Celebrate William Blake’s birthday, The House of Lords, opening a football match at the MK Dons Stadium. S4 E6: The Consequences of Being Exposed to Diet Culture at a Young Age With Lori Brand
Lori Brand transitioned from a celebrated career in the fitness industry to advocating for strength and self-love. She went from gymnast and model to fitness writer turned novelist of Bodies To Die For. "I first encountered Diet Culture in fourth grade, when my dance instructor, in an effort to lose weight, had her jaw wired shut. Since then, I’ve steeped in it as a gymnast, stripper, Playboy model, bodybuilder, and group fitness/spinning/yoga instructor. I’ve felt it as a new mother in the pressure to “bounce back.” Even as an engineer, I’ve heard it in my colleagues’ voices: Do I look fat in this? Is dairy bad? In January 2020, Jillian Michaels was interviewed on BuzzFeed News. When the subject of Lizzo as a body acceptance role model came up, Jillian said, “Why are we celebrating her body? Why does it matter? Why aren’t we celebrating her music? Cause it isn’t going to be awesome if she gets diabetes.” And social media blew-up. The HAES camp accused Jillian of fat phobia disguised as health concern. The Wellness camp said that we needed to stop normalizing obesity. Then in May, Adele posted a birthday picture of herself to Instagram, and it was clear that she had lost a significant amount of weight. Immediately HAES zealots criticized her weight loss. People were “hurt” and “disappointed” in her smaller size (as if she owed them her body). They wrote that celebrating her weight loss was akin to saying that there was something wrong with her before. Later, Adele would explain–though why should she have to?—that she had been going through a challenging time, and that exercise helped her deal with it. That it was never so much about shrinking, as about getting strong, both physically and mentally. And that is something to celebrate. The social media backlash against both Jillian and Adele struck me. How what started as a desire to make the world better–through wellness or body acceptance—could be twisted into making it worse. I wanted to probe that, and BODIES TO DIE FOR was born. Once I finished BODIES TO DIE FOR and started talking about it, so many people told me their own Diet Culture horror stories. Fat or thin, young or old, we’ve all been impacted by it. And that’s why I’ve dedicated this book to all women everywhere, and why it has the ending that it does. I truly believe that we are all sisters. That we need to quit fighting and judging each other. We are responsible for the world that we are bringing our daughters into. What sort of place do we want it to be? Strong women lift each other up." FOR MORE: https://www.loribrandwrites.com/

S2 E1: Chet Galaska Breaks The Stigma On Diabetes
Chet Galaska was a company president for most of his career. In retirement He’s working to help diabetics by dispelling the myths and misperceptions that stigmatize diabetics and deter care. He’s had diabetes since 1981 and done well with it. Because of this he was asked to participate in a long-term study for the Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard University. He has found that people generally do not understand diabetes and that much of what they believe is untrue. To address this he wrote The Diabetes Book: What Everyone Should Know and developed the Challenge Diabetes Program. CDP teaches the basics to diabetics, those who care about them and anyone who wants to know the facts. In recognition of this work he was presented the Heroes Walking Among Us Award by the Massachusetts Foot and Ankle Society. These are doctors who know first-hand how damaging ignorance about diabetes is. His purpose is to create an informed and supportive social environment that respects diabetics who fight it and encourages those who don’t to take it seriously.
