Sober Authenticity: Defining Self After Addiction
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we continue our talk about authenticity. After active addiction, we begin living sober but are faced with the question of, “Who am I now?” You know you can’t continue to be the same person you were during active addiction so how do you reinvent yourself into a new version of you and remain authentic and true to yourself? Is this a version of self that you can sustain? It can definitely cause anxiety since the person you were for so many years during active addiction is no longer who (or what) you are now. It’s also exciting because the possibilities are truly limitless. Be the type of person you’ve always admired. Please rate and review this podcast wherever you listen to podcasts. Living Sober & Being Present (Isn’t It Nice)
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we have another one of our “Isn’t It Nice” installments. Now that we are free from active addiction and living sober we can be there for our loved ones when they need us. There was a time when they absolutely could not count on us to be there. Also, we go into whether or not relapse is an option and how the fear of detox can be a real deterrent that keeps us sober. Addiction Taught Me To Find & Appreciate Beauty In Everything
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we delve into the Hermetic Law of Polarity and how we can learn and grow from any situation. Once you’ve gotten past active addiction and living sober, life gets good again. We can easily see the contrast in how bad and good things can be. When we look at the world around us and see all the negativity, we can do that knowing that it MUST mean that there is something that is equally as positive. Like the Yin and the Yang, you can’t have good without bad. So, bad things mean there must be something equally as good. As an addict in recovery, we can certainly appreciate that probably more than most.Don’t forget to drop in on Clive’s WhatsApp group and say hi to the guys and me, the link is below. Thinking About Thinking: Avoiding Self Sabotage with Clive and Dom
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! We’re back! After a very long hiatus, My Sober Addiction is back. Clive, Dom and Matt are back for a chat about thinking. Why is it that we always seem to think ourselves into oblivion? Sometimes it is best to step away from the brain and take a breath. One thing we’ve learned is that the human brain is going to do what it does best, which is think and overthink and then think some more. It’s overload! It just exacerbates the problem when we stick our faces in our screens and absorb all that negativity and dopamine hits that only social media can provide most of our waking hours. Meditation is a key part to getting control of your mind. Please understand that “Brain” and “Mind” aren’t the same thing. What Would Your Future Self Thank You For? With Clive and Dom
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, Clive and Dom are back for another lively chat. With Clive’s deep research and Dom’s quick wit, there is never a dull moment. So, isn’t it nice that, now that we are sober a free from addiction, we can be there for the people in our lives? Usually these are people are the ones who were there for us when we were battling active addiction and support our recovery now that we are living a sober lifestyle. It just feels good to be able to help people when they call rather than making excuses for why we can’t make it. The truth. Is, we couldn’t because addiction had us constantly chasing drugs, but of course we never would admit it at that time. We finish up by discussing how important it is to things today that our future selves would thank us for. It started with going through withdrawals and resisting relapse and now it is building a life. It’s not always easy but will your future self thank you for doing it? If so, then do it! Isn’t It Nice Not Being A Strung Out Junkie?
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we are making another installment in our “Isn’t It Nice” series. When we were in active addiction, it was nearly impossible to be there for the ones we love. Sure, we intended to be but it just never seemed to work out. Any time something would come up, we would say we would be there but addiction always had other plans for us. Now that we are sober and living that clean and sober lifestyle, we can actually be there for people with no worry of being away from the hustle and grind of the dope game. Ain’t sobriety great? Your Attention is Being Hijacked. Get it Back! With Clive and Dom
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! “Clear paths, not trees.” A new episode of My Sober Addiction with Matt, Dom and Clive cuts through the noise and gets practical. The trio look at how fear‑driven media rigs our attention. They show how awareness, boundaries and small experiments can flip anxiety into agency. No mysticism. No outrage farming. Just tools you can try today. We are all being bombarded from every side with negativity from the soul crushing media and social media. It’s enough to make anyone want to bury their head in the sand. We addicts need to be especially careful during these times because anxiety and dread can lead to relapse back into active addiction. There is hope but it will take some effort and sacrifice on your part. It’s totally worth it, though, so don't despair. To regain our sanity as well as our humanity we must take control of our own (as Clive says) mental diet. This means getting hyper aware of where you are directing your attention. Do not play into the games that “they” are always trying to distract us with. Addicts in recovery are particularly aware of how easily distracted we humans are, and we’ve had to overcome it at least once in order to get sober. What you’ll hear Why negativity sells, and how to stop buying it.How acceptance and action work together, not against each other. Why “emotional baggage” keeps you heavy, and how to put it down. How simple lifestyle shifts, including fasting done sensibly, can clear the fog.How community and story shape the reality you live in.The core move Stop problem‑spotting. Start path‑finding. The episode reframes attention as your daily vote for the world you inhabit. You do not control headlines or other people’s choices. You do control your focus, your boundaries, and the next small thing you do. That is enough to change a day. Change enough days and you change a life. Much love and respect! The Mirror That Is A Drug Test | Being Someone’s Project
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, I am flying solo after two episodes with Clive cohosting and one with Dominic joining us. I recently read a post on Reddit (don’t judge me) and it definitely struck a nerve. It was about an addict in recovery who is doing very well and was being assisted by a cousin who allowed him to move in with him. That is, until recently when the cousin accused the poster of relapse and wouldn’t accept a drug test as proof and asked the poster to move out. It gets worse and i get into those details in this episode. Further, a drug test is like a mirror to us addicts, whether in active addiction or in recovery. In active addiction, it. Is. Our worst enemy and forces us to face our addiction. In recovery, though, it is like a badge of honor. Clive and Dom will be back in the next episode. Much love and respect! Fasting For Change | Cohost Clive Wilson with Special Guest Dominic
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, Clive is back as cohost and we take it up yet another notch by having our friend, Dominic, join the discussion. Clive and Dom have been friends for quite some time so the conversation is very natural. Dom is much more experienced with fasting and is a fantastic resource for learning to fast and do it the right way. There are lots of reasons to fast such as health and spirituality but Dom’s story of how he discovered it is fascinating and inspiring. The three of us went for a 72 hour fast. I, Matt, made it to 36 hours while Clive made it to the 72 hours mark and Dom got all the way to 84 hours, which is exactly half a week. Impressive…and inspiring! Please visit FastingForChange.org for more information and consider joining us for a fast and contribute to a very worthy cause. Clive Wilson Cohosts | Focusing Attention and Inspiring Others
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! in this episode of My Sober Addiction, Clive Wilson of the Breaking My. Addictions and QRious Threads podcasts is my cohost. I say this because we are going for something a bit different than the usual host/guest interview format. Our conversations seem to flow naturally and Clive is a formidable host on his own, so why not try this out? We go beyond the usual talk of addiction and sober living and into more of what motivates us to continue pressing forward. The world can be a dark place so, now more than ever, we need to shine our lights. Where does all this fit in with addiction and recovery? Well, this isn’t exclusive to addicts in recovery but then again, we do know as well as anyone just how dark things can be and how necessary it is for those of us to shine our lights. I always say that awareness is key. That is true for when you come face to face with your addiction and know something must change and that a sober lifestyle is the only real way to begin lasting change. Then we can go and be the shining examples of sobriety that we know we can and should be. Visit Clive’s podcasts at: www.BreakingMyAddictions.com www.QriousThreads.comEver notice how your mind gets hijacked by news, social media, or petty dramas? In a raw chat on the My Sober Addictions podcast with Matt Stevens, we dug into how attention shapes our lives. From doom-scrolling to autopilot habits, we’re often pawns in a game designed to steal our focus for profit or power. The cost? Anxiety, lost time, and a creeping disconnect from what matters.Yet, there’s a way out. Awareness is the first rebellion—spotting where your energy leaks and redirecting it to what you can control. We shared how fasting, like our 3-day challenge, sharpens focus and breaks addictive cycles. It’s not just about food; it’s reclaiming mental space. High-vibrational acts—writing poetry, cooking for a friend—beat the quick dopamine hits of TikTok or nicotine. The world won’t change for you, but you can change yourself. And that ripples. Want in? Repurposed Addiction | Addict Traits While Living Sober
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction we are talking about how our old habits from active addiction are still showing through, and probably have since we were born. Even when we are living sober, we are still obsessed with whatever it is that we are doing whether it’s learning a new skill, working, cleaning, etc. Addicts are very persistent and can even be viewed as perfectionists because we focus on details like a laser, we learn and grow and obsess over whatever it is we are doing. We don't have to be in active addiction to still have those traits, those tendencies. If we are totally honest then we can see how we have always been this way. In fact, it probably could’ve been a sign that we could be addicts. We can redirect this trait and use it to perfect things we do even after active addiction, when we are living sober. That Post Addiction Recovery Spiritual Awakening Thing We Do
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we look back on a couple things we’ve talked about in the past. In particular, how when we do finally kick addiction and begin living a sober lifestyle most of us seem to find spirituality. We begin exploring our spiritual awakening and in a lot of cases (like mine) it stems from some profound experience we had while in an overdose. When I was in active addiction, I had a particular relapse where I had been sober a couple weeks but then caved in and bought some drugs. The overdose that ensued was a severe as it can be and still survive. Afterward, I realized that I had been conscious but not in my body while I was in that overdosed state. This happens to a lot of addicts and then, when we get sober, we find ourselves searching for answers. We turn to religion and philosophy but those things never seem to do it….until we find pure spirituality. If you’ve had an experience like this, I’d love to hear your story. You Can’t Take Addiction On Vacation
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, I want to encourage you to tell your recovery story with more encouragement in it. Meaning, when you tell your story of recovery, don't just talk about your addiction, the withdrawal symptoms, the relapses and all the things you had to do to overcome addiction and come out on the other side living a sober lifestyle. Of course, all those things are extremely important but what is also important is telling how you were able to recovery those damaged relationships with loved ones. In a lot of cases, that usually happens quicker and much easier than most people think. Last week, I did not release a podcast episode because I was on vacation with my family. I reflected on how they have accepted me back into the family unit and how I was able to rebuild trust a lot faster than I ever would’ve expected. Sure, they were completely fed up with me and my addiction and relapses, and certainly didn’t want me bringing any of the drama that comes with someone in active addiction but once I did recover once and for all, they allowed me back in. All they ever wanted from me was to see me living a happy, healthy, sober lifestyle in recovery. Please share this podcast and also give me a rating and review wherever you listen to audio podcasts.. Being A Sober Living Inspiration with Guest Joy Downey
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we are joined by guest, Joy Downey. Joy has nearly 20 years of sobriety and now helps addicts in active addiction to get into treatment. Her story is harrowing, from smuggling drugs out of Mexico to run ins with the police and the prospect of serious penitentiary time. She tells how losing it all, including your kids, is sometimes still not enough to finally get sober. Joy’s addiction took her to some very dark places but, ultimately, after losing her kids, she decided enough is enough, I want my kids back! She now has an amazing relationship with her family and has found herself babysitting her grandchildren. This is something people still suffering in active addiction think will never be possible even if they do recover and live a sober lifestyle. Cultivating A Mindfulness Addiction With Guest Clive Wilson
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, our good friend, Clive Wilson from the Breaking My Addictions podcast, returns for another great conversation. We cover it all, too! Things we addicts in recovery remember dealing with during our time in active addiction and things we are dealing with now that we are sober. Life doesn’t get easy just because we kicked addiction and are now living sober. We have so much we have to do to get life back on track. Facing our demons and sometimes having to do the hard things that no one wants to do, though, will cause us to grow as souls as well as instill in us a sense of accomplishment. Also, there are those still in active addiction who look to people who are in recovery and living a sober lifestyle and find inspiration. As I’ve said many time, you are the shining examples that those still struggling with addiction need to see to be inspired. The outro song is one of Clive’s titled “United State of Awakening” that can be found on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5rwZYDFtD7DINpVeB6nIDj?si=MKQQL9k0RKydTO2CvtvZmA&pi=Anxmmo07QfaA- or by following the link below. Finding God In The Void, Manifesting Overdose
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we are going for a little ride. During a relapse, I had a really bad overdose and found myself face to face with nothing, and everything at the same time. One of the many things addiction taught me was that all the religious programming I had received did not match up to what I experienced. I had been living sober for 16 days and the withdrawal symptoms were brutal. I came into some money and, as most addicts do, I talked myself into buying some heroin. Of course, it wasn’t really a relapse, right? I still intended to ride it out, kick my drug addiction and get sober once and for all…after this once. Once is all it takes! I overdosed and found myself in what I later learned to describe as the Quantum Field, where God creates from. At that point in my addiction, I knew how to get sober but had no clue how to actually stay sober. That’s where treatment and rehab come into the equation. Even after that profound spiritual experience, I still didn’t find a life in sobriety, but it did plant a seed in me that then sprouted after I did. This is the story and what I learned. Being Mindful Of Addictive Traits Now That You’re Living Sober
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction we are revisiting the idea of being mindful of those traits, those tendencies, we had during active addiction. The thing is, if we really look back on life before and after active addiction, we realize that those traits are part of who we are. We carry them over into life when we are sober in our jobs, exercise and heath, relationships, hobbies, etc. We have to be aware of our mental state and not allow burn out to set in and risk relapse. In the past, I’ve said that i would recommend someone hire addicts in recovery because of how dedicated they are. Of course that comes with a price to the addict in recovery, you may have higher expectations placed on you to maintain and prove your sobriety. Does that not sound fair? Maybe it isn’t but it’s just the way it is. Unfortunately, addicts do relapse and when they do…well, let’s just not do that. Our Belief Feedback Loop Addiction While Living Sober
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this week’s episode of My Sober Addiction, we are getting into the topic of belief loops. For real this time! When in active addiction, we fell into a very negative feedback loop and eventually got sober and moved on in a life of recovery. The problem is that so many still carry those same negative belief systems they had while in active addiction. When we finally kicked addiction and got sober we should have also adopted a new and much more positive belief system to go along with our recovery. When you look at it a little deeper you see that the entire human collective are on a negative feedback loop. That’s not good and what also sucks is that we really can’t do anything about that, the world is on the trajectory that it is on and that’s that. What you can do, though, is remove your individual unit of consciousness from the equation and go your own way. Not unlike when you got sober, you had to leave all your friends still in active addiction to their fate. Of course you hoped for the best for them but most of them stay on that negative path and never find sobriety and recovery. Some do, though, and have your positive example to thank for it. That’s awesome. Let’s not stop there and also show them they can also change the course of their lives by changing their beliefs. Our Beliefs dictate our Expectations and our Expectations cause Manifestations. Let’s make sure those are Positive! Please rate and review this audio podcast wherever you listen to podcasts. Belief Loops About Addiction And Recovery
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we are introducing the concept of belief loops, or feedback loops, as it pertains to addiction, recovery, sober living and just moving on in your life in sobriety in general. However, I must apologize for being woefully unprepared. This week has been insane and I simply did not have time to prepare. I do have a topic, though, and it is a good one and is something that will be a series of episodes. So, for this episode, I am really just introducing this concept of belief loops and will be fully prepared next week. Until then, check out Clive’s newest podcast, QRious Threads, where he gets into some very interesting talks about miracles among other things. He had me on as a guest very recently, and that episode can be found on my X page or on QRiousThreads.com. It is an opportunity to completely transform your identity and what exactly being “You” actually is. Most addicts in recovery had been in active addiction and living that lifestyle for so long that they don’t even know who they are any more. One thing we can be certain of is that no longer are you that drug addict who is consumed with constantly chasing drugs. We get to transition into sober living but what exactly does that even look like? Meditation is key to getting in touch with your Higher Self and discovering your new definition of Self. The exciting thing is that you can allow your imagination to run wild and remake this new you, this sober version of you, into whatever you want to be. Manifesting this new life can be a bit scary, though, and even cause anxiety and panic attacks. So, take a deep breath, express some gratitude and get to reimagining and reinventing yourself. Please consider supporting My Sober Addiction. There are many ways to do so including financial support, but also by helping to spread the word by sharing episodes and rating and/or reviewing the show wherever you listen to audio podcasts. Guest Clive Wilson From Breaking My Addictions Podcast
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here!In this episode of My Sober Addiction we are joined by my friend, Clive Wilson, who hosts the podcast Breaking My Addictions. Clive is an innovator and approaches addiction and recovery in a totally fresh, new way. In addition to his podcast, he has a very strong presence online through his multiple websites. For example, the Breaking My Addictions website has some features that anyone interested in recovery, relapse prevention and sober living need to check out. We dig into Clive’s mind a bit and see how he got started and what drives his passion for understanding addiction and all that it entails. He is very straight forward and looks at things in a very practical way that can easily be incorporated into daily life. He is developing new ways, new strategies, to confront addiction and put it in your rear view. I recommend going to the Breaking My Addictions website and exploring some of his ideas. To me, Clive is more of a “roll with it” kind of guy. Meaning, instead of fighting that monster toe to toe, use its own strength against it and allow it to beat itself. With that out of the way, we are left with confronting ourselves and what we need to do with our own lives to make addiction irrelevant…or at least not so dominant. Shifting our focus. When we do that, all we have left to conquer is ourselves. That’s still no easy task but at least we’ve knocked it down to I against I. Much love and respect! Your Addiction Recovery Story Is Still Inspirational
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here!In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we delve into the memories of active addiction that we sometimes find ourselves reflecting on when we are in recovery. It’s sometimes hard to find understanding and support outside of ourselves. We need to remember that our own stories are inspiring and that we have came so very far and in a surprising short amount of time. The momentum generated just from the act of getting sober and beginning sober living is immense and definitely not something to overlook. I analyze the bonus episode that dropped midweek and how it shows us how far we have came. Your own story is inspirational, don’t short change yourself. You’ve accomplished so much since the moment you decided once and for all to kick addiction, get into recovery and live a sober lifestyle. Raw Unedited Reflecting On Addiction Memoir *Bonus Episode
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! Maybe this is podcasting career suicide. Maybe it’s not. If you have never heard an episode of My Sober Addiction before then maybe check out a few other episodes before this one. This one is very impromptu, unplanned, not prepared for and completely unedited. I had just reread 4 chapters in my upcoming memoir of my time in active addiction and it really took a heavy toll on me so i recorded this on the fly. This is something I’ve never done before. In this “episode” of My Sober Addiction…well, it isn’t really an episode but more just me pouring out my feelings after going through and rereading 4 chapters of the upcoming memoir of my time in active addiction. I put those chapters into an AI editor for some feedback and then had to read the chapters. WOW! All those memories came crashing down on me and I just had to vent. So, I grabbed the microphone and…well, this happened. I decided to not edit it at all, I didn’t even add the intro or outro. I hope this isn’t your first experience with My Sober Addiction but if it is, please check out some other episodes before passing judgement. Here’s A Tough Question About Addiction Recovery
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, I ask the question, “Was it worth it?” Was your addiction and all you went through and all you put your loved ones through worth it in the end? Meaning, now that you’re living sober and an inspiration for others still in active addiction to get sober. Or, now that your children can look to your example of the level of adversity (that addiction entails) that we can overcome once we decide once and for all that we are going to break free from addiction and live a sober lifestyle. With that in mind, was it worth it? What about the mother of your friend who was not so fortunate and fell into relapse right after rehab and had a fatal overdose? How can you face her? We get into this topic in this short but packed episode of My Sober Addiction. Please rate and review this podcast wherever you listen to podcasts. Also, subscribe to the YouTube channel and follow me on X, both as Matt Stevens MSA. Lastly, don’t forget to visit the new website at MySoberAddiction.com There will be a midweek bonus episode coming up that is very raw, unedited and from the heart after I got a gut punch from some very vivid memories from my time in active addiction. Redirected Attention To Maintain Your Recovery
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction we are talking about ways to keep your sobriety in the forefront of your life. Besides addiction and recovery, addicts have one thing in common for sure and that is our tenacity, the way we obsess over things. It’s almost fanatical really. We don't know moderation, its as I’ve said in the past, we go either 1,000 mph or zero, no in between. Is that a personality trait? I think it is. Is it a bad thing? That depends. Now that you are in recovery and living a sober lifestyle you can’t allow complacency to creep in. You have to find healthy outlets to focus that obsession on. I know, it is not politically correct to use words like “obsession” but whatever. In your new life living sober you can find other things to direct that addictive tendency toward. The amazing thing about that is, if you go after something that is positive as hard as you went after chasing dope then there is no telling how far you can go. Just begin. That’s all! Begin. Please rate and review My Sober Addiction wherever you listen to audio podcasts and consider supporting the show financially if you feel inspired to do so. My Mindfulness Addiction and Dislike of Buzzwords
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction we are once again talking about auto-pilot and how, if left unchecked, it can be a recovery killer. The good news is that we DO have ways to switch that off, be more mindful and keep recovery and sober living in the forefront of our minds. Active addiction was the ultimate in mindless auto-pilot living and the addictive side of our brains would love nothing more than for us to fall back into that, let our recovery slip out of sight and allow addiction to regain its hold on us. Meditation and awareness alarms are still my most recommended tools for staying mindful about your recovery and sober living. There are also many other ways to keep yourself accountable and protect all your hard work in your recovery. There are other addicts still suffering who need to see that there is hope in recovery and that our best days, through sober living, are ahead of us. You can live an amazing, inspired life and be a shining example for others still struggling in active addiction. There is hope. We do recover. And you, dear loved one, are living proof of it. Please support My Sober Addiction by giving some 5 star ratings and reviews wherever you listen to audio podcasts, and share with everyone you possibly can. Also, please subscribe to the YouTube channel and the X page, both at Matt Stevens MSA. Preventing Addiction Auto-Pilot Safeguards Recovery
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this, the 50th episode of My Sober Addiction, we talk about being mindful and staying aware of our state of mind. When we were in active addiction, we stayed in a constant state of auto-pilot and every day was exactly the same as before. In recovery, it is no different, we have to stay on guard and protect our sobriety. We can’t allow ourselves to fall into old habits and risk relapse. Think back on some of the worst times when you were in active addiction and let that help motivate you to stay sober. While that shouldn’t always be our motivation for recovery, sometimes a slice of humble pie goes a long way. Recovery Complacency Is Real - Relapse Trigger Warning
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here!***Relapse Trigger Warning*** I do go into graphic detail about intravenous drug use in this episode. I have faith that you can handle it but may need a little heads up. If you feel that your recovery is fragile then maybe this episode is not for you. If that is the case, just know that I do love you and I’ll talk with you in episode 50. In this episode of My Sober Addiction we get into another pitfall of addiction recovery and sober living, and that is Complacency. Ultimately, though, practicing sincere gratitude daily cures just about anything you may be dealing with. According to Alcoholfree.com, I’ve gained a bit of a reputation for not being afraid to talk about some subjects rather graphically and this episode may be one of those. We talk about “that moment” that every addict says is their favorite during the whole process (the ritual) of feeding the monster known as Addiction. For those with a gambling addiction it may be finding that perfect bet, and for heroin addicts it is that moment before the drugs hit their system and they know its “go time.” Whatever the case, please be advised that I do go there and it’s possible it could trigger a relapse. I just wanted to let you know what to expect. Recovery Burn Out Is Real
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we are getting into what not to do when you finally get sober. Recovery can be tricky and if we aren’t careful we can allow our addictive traits seep in and we then direct our addiction toward all that. Then “Recovery Burnout” sets in and the chances of relapse increase. The best plan of action is to always be aware of your mindset and not get too overly involved in the recovery community. Of course always go to meetings and events but just do it all in moderation so that burn out doesn’t set in. Hard Questions About Sobriety and More Addiction To Gratitude
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we expand on what is going in our “tool bags” for manifesting a happy and successful life that we truly want to experience. To manifest the life you truly want now that you are out of active addiction and now living sober you have to get very good at being thankful, of course, but you also have to sharpen your discernment and intuition skills. Intuition will assist you in so many ways but as it relates to addiction and sober living it can (and most likely does) keep you out of situations where temptation to relapse may be too great. That’s just one example. Discernment is another skill that is invaluable to you when moving forward in life new to sobriety. It helps you to separate fact from fiction and stay true to yourself and maintain your sobriety. Please follow me on X (@mattstevensMSA) where you can keep up with everything I am doing with the audio podcast, videos on YouTube and Rumble, and blogs and blurbs and others random thoughts I write and post to Substack and Reddit. My Gratitude Addiction...All Aboard!
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we are continuing the theme of the previous two episodes where we reflected back on our time in active addiction and how different our lives are now that we are living sober but going a bit further. We are looking into how gratitude is your #1 Tool for life. It’s more than just being grateful for sobriety, it’s al that living sober has done for us. We need to develop a gratitude practice so that we can continue to take stock of all the ways our Higher Power has blessed us and to express gratitude for all of it. After all, we don't like it after we do nice things for people and they don't even so much as say thank you, do we? In fact, a lot of times it causes us to be a bit resentful, right? “They could’ve at least said, ‘thank you!’” Please find me on YouTube and X (formerly Twitter) as Matt Stevens MSA and follow to keep up with everything I’m doing whether it’s audio podcasts, videos, or blog posts. Addiction Doesn’t Care About Snowstorms, Isn’t It Nice cont.
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! On this episodes of My Sober Addiction, I was inspired by the recent snowstorm to reflect back on my time in active addiction and remember how, even during a blizzard or an ice storm, I had to stay on the hustle to make sure I had dope for the next day. And then the next, etc. the madness doesn’t end. It doesn’t matter if there is a holiday going on or if the weather has turned treacherous and travel is nearly impossible, that monster, Addiction, must still be fed. So, isn’t it nice that we don't have to live that way any more? Isn’t it nice that we can stay home and be snowed in? I tell a few stories about some of the things that we all had to go through just to get to our drug and feed our addiction. Some things no sober person would ever do! If you have any particular stories in mind of some of the crazy things you had to do when you were in active addiction then please send those stories to me via the chat feature at the top of this description. Now that we are sober and living much happier and healthier lives, we can look back on some of those times and maybe laugh a bit but also realize how so appreciative we are for sobriety. Consciousness of the Rhythm of Addiction and Sobriety
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! in this episode of My Sober Addiction, we take a tiny peek into Hermeticism and how the Principles of Polarity and Rhythm apply to our lives, particularly to addiction and sobriety. Even when we are living sober, addiction always seems to still pop in and say hello from time to time through temptation to relapse. The opposite was true, also. When we were in active addiction, sobriety always seemed to want to say hello occasionally, too, when we really felt that burning desire to get sober. The pendulum does swing back and forth from addiction to sobriety, and it will do so regardless of which end of it we are on. What’s dangerous is when we are not aware of this fact and we then ride along with it. In the Kybalion, it teaches the Law of Neutralization. This is when we become aware of the fact that the two polar opposites do flow back and forth in a rhythm, addiction and sobriety. Once we are aware of this, though, we can rise above it and not go back and forth with it. We can simply acknowledge that it is there, that sometimes we are more tempted than other times, and let it go. We do not have to ride that roller coaster any longer. It’s still there, yes, but now we, from above it all, can simply observe it and not participate in it. Please rate and review this podcast wherever you listen to podcasts. Addiction n’ Holidays and Recovery n’ Gratitude n’ Stuff
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we are continuing with getting back to talking about addiction and recovery. The YouTube channel is where the metaphysical stuff will be from now on. Here, we are returning to talking about addiction, recovery, relapse prevention and moving on into our lives sober, happy and healthy, wealthy and free. During the holiday season (November and December) it is an excellent time for us to reflect back on our time in active addition and realize how far we’ve come. It really puts things into perspective. Remembering how life was back then when we couldn’t afford to buy gifts, or travel out of town to visit family, or anything that pulled us away from the 24/7 hustle that supplied our dope habits. Isn’t it nice that we do not have to live that way any more? Isn’t it nice that we can buy gifts and go out of town and spend time with family and just everything that goes with the holiday season that we weren’t able to do when we were still in active addiction? Recovery sounds even better when you look at it that way! Go on a little walk down Memory Lane with me in this episode and let’s be so very grateful for sobriety and all that it has done for us. What If You Had Never Found Addiction?
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! Surprise! Ol’ Matty is back to focusing on addiction in the audio podcast. The YouTube channel has freed me up so that all my interests in metaphysical topics can be discussed there. This makes it so that My Sober Addiction can return to being primarily about addiction, sobriety and sober living. Don’t get it twisted, though, I’m still who I am and I will still go off the deep end into the metaphysical woo woo stuff about the Nature of Reality, Consciousness, Spirituality and Reality Creation and all that. In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we explore the possibility of parallel/ alternate realities and how things could have or would have been if you had gotten sober sooner, or maybe if you had never used drugs in the first place. If you could “quantum jump” into a different version of yourself and had never fallen into the throes of addiction, would you? The easy answer is yes but then what would that mean exactly? Finding Purpose Now That You Are Sober
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! On this episode of My Sober Addiction, we discuss finding purpose and meaning after you’ve gotten sober. In the Sober Living community, there are many who find spirituality and/or religion in very big ways. As addicts are known to do, they throw themselves into it fully, further proving that we don’t know how to do anything in moderation. Addiction is a mental disease and we continue to prove this fact even in sobriety. A lot of addicts new to sobriety find themselves aligning with the more alternative spiritual philosophies and go down that road, which is perfectly fine. However, in the esoteric new age community we hear a lot of people say they are “star seeds” or “wanderers” which basically means they’re originally not from Earth and have incarnated here for some purpose. Then, you hear those who will say they hate life here and feel homesick or a longing to return home, but then they’re confused because they can’t even tell you where that even is with any certainty. I am not judging. In fact, I’ll go with you and say that there are distinct possibilities that you have lived other lifetimes on other worlds, but that doesn’t mean that’s where you’re from. Ultimately you are from the Source (the Creator) and will return there at some point, once you’ve done whatever it is that you came here to do. So, relax, everything is fine. Yes, life in this Construct can be very difficult but remember that you didn’t come here for no good reason, so find your purpose and get to it. I would venture to guess that your time in active addiction did have something to do with all this. Empathy and Attention Addiction with Kitty as Guest
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! Kitty joins me in this 40th episode of My Sober Addiction where we talk about empathy and what it means to be an empath. More specifically, a conscious empath. The types of people who are drawn to empaths can range from people who simply need to vent to people who are sympathy seeking life energy sucking vampires. Also, we introduce Kitty’s new YouTube channel, Real Life SOS, which you need to check out! There she talks real life advice about topics which are as simple as they are profound such as “be nice!” or “call your mom!” As ridiculously simple as those messages may be, you may be shocked to know how many people need to hear them. Of course, she delivers these messages in a way that only Kitty can…so there’s that. We wrap this one up by talking about a mother’s love and how it feels to have your own kids struggle with addiction. Roadblocks, Curveballs and the Upside of Down
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we revisit the topic of roadblocks and how they are very positive signs in your life. If you’ve kicked addiction and gotten sober and now moving on with your life, you may be seeing some roadblocks and/or curveballs coming your way but let that encourage you instead of the opposite. Why? Because it’s a very, very good sign that you’re on the right path. We know that we are spiritual beings and don’t have to skirt around issues dealing with that, so I don’t pretend that there is no adversarial force in the world that would like nothing more than to keep people down. Sadly, it gets it’s way with people more often than not, but not with you, dear loved one! You have overcame so much already by kicking addiction and living a sober life against the odds that you are now wired to handle diversity. It seems that when we are on the wrong path things just kind of flow, or continue as business as usual. However, when we are moving in the direction of the goals we choose to manifest something seems to try to get us off track. Awakening to Sobriety and Purpose
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we are looking into exactly what does the term “spiritual awakening” actually mean? Do we ever become fully awakened spiritually? And what abuse, neglect and/or trauma caused us to seek some sort of refuge, and then find it in addiction in the first place? At first, the drugs seemed to be the perfect answer to everything that ever bothered us, but then very quickly they became a new kind of hell all their own. We then found ourselves searching for answers and sobriety, religion briefly seemed the perfect cure for our addictions. Then even that let us down, but not before showing us that there is something bigger than we are, something even bigger than our addictions.Hello, Spirituality! We discovered that we do have a Higher Power and that all this abuse and trauma and addiction and all the struggling with getting sober, and probably several relapses and overdoses was all preparing us for something. It was preparing us to search outside ourselves for answers but really, the answers are all inside us and have been all along. Let’s dig a little deeper and figure out what really makes us tick and what led us to this particular spiritual path, the path of spiritual awakening…ad still, what exactly IS “awakening” anyway? What’s it got to do with drugs, addiction, sobriety, religion or anything? Let’s see if we can figure it out together. Please check me out on YouTube (@MattStevensMSA) and on Substack (Matt Stevens) and subscribe, it would mean a lot and I would so very much appreciate your support. The Money Episode, Check Your Feelings
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, we are talking about some hard truths about our attitudes towards money and success. A lot of people have fallen into the trap of believing that success is very hard to achieve or that anyone who has had success and accumulated wealth did it by some nefarious means. Whether that’s true or not is completely irrelevant. It doesn’t matter if the system is rigged and some bad people have made out like bandits or not, that has nothing to do with us! Addicts in recovery, as I always say, are in a particularly unique position in that we have an incredible amount of momentum going for us just by getting sober in the first place. We are in a position when we begin sober living to do something amazing with ourselves, and to then be examples of what addicts in recovery can accomplish. We just can not allow ourselves to fall into those traps of thinking that it can’t be done or that the deck is stacked against us. Those views instill resentment towards successful people and wealth which will almost guarantee that you will not succeed. How could you if you resent success and wealth? Or, if you see it as completely out of reach? I love you enough to tell you the hard truth about yourself and help to pull you up out of that muck. The Experience of Addiction While Choosing Sober Living
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! “You are not a drop in the ocean, you are the entire ocean in a drop.” - Rumi Simple and profound, Im afraid that far too often quotes like this are pushed to the “bargain bin” aka used in memes on social media but rarely really pondered. The Kybalion teaches us that “All are in the ALL,” but also that “The ALL is in All.” In this episode of My Sober Addiction we are looking into what is our purpose and what was the reason for our battle with addiction. There are lots of questions addicts in recovery typically ask, especially when they’re new to sobriety. Was there even a reason for it? Are we supposed to have brought back with us some sort of experience that we can use while moving forward in our sober lives? Why are some people more prone to addiction and others aren’t at all? There must be a reason. Well, there is, and it’s totally related to our experience in this lifetime and what we can learn from it. If Sobriety Is A State Then Addiction Is Stasis
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction we sort of get back to the business of talking about addiction and recovery and sober living and all that. Sort of. I’m making the point that we are not going backwards and we aren’t going to sit still, either. We are moving forward into our lives of sobriety, away from active addiction and even from recovery. What do I mean by that? I view recovery as the first few steps toward sobriety but that ultimately sober life is the goal. Put a bow on that, it’s done! Next, we figure out what we are going to do with the rest of our lives…now that we actually HAVE lives. Let’s face it, addiction is not “living,” it’s existing at best. Now that we are sober (and just by virtue of that) we have an incredible amount of momentum propelling us forward. So, what’s next? Whatever it is, dream big, because with all this momentum created already we are going up, and at breakneck speeds, too. We need to utilize this opportunity we have. All that’s left is to begin being whatever it is that we choose to be. We hear all the time to “act as if,” or to “be as if,” and these statements could not be more accurate, the trick is actually doing it. Most people talk a good game but rarely do they ever really follow their own advice. That’s where we come in, we lead by our own examples, we will be the “Shining Examples” of what someone can do once they decide to simply DO it. Please check out my YouTube channel, MattStevensMSA, and my Substack page, Matt Stevens. I do talk a lot about addiction, recovery, sobriety and sober living on those, too. Mostly, though, I explore some of the deeper meanings of things I’ve talked about on the podcast such as manifestation, reality creation, the science of consciousness, the nature of reality, Natural Law, etc. I also delve a little deeper into topics discussed on the podcast. Please subscribe to me on those so we can grow a community of fellow seekers who just so happen to also be addicts in recovery, too. An Apology and Momentum From Recovery
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! Since beginning the My Sober Addiction podcast I know I haven’t always been consistent. For that, I am offering an apology, and publishing this short podcast. I do have what I believe to be one of my best episodes yet recorded but still need to edit it. It has been a wild week and since recording this short episode it got even crazier. I am typing this in the surgery waiting room at the University of Kentucky Hospital. A family emergency. I’m sure I’ll be ranting about it in an upcoming episode and/or YouTube video. Anyway, I wanted to also remind you of the enormous amount of momentum you generated just by getting sober in the first place. From coming out of active addiction and into recovery is a huge step in the right direction, whatever that is for you. That’s what I mean when i say to “ride that wave!” Let the momentum of getting sober catapult you into the next phase of life. Recovery From Nihilism, Life After Addiction
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In this episode of My Sober Addiction, I go a little further into the Kybalion. We begin to explore the possibility of none of this being real. As interesting of a subject as this may be, it can lead to a nihilistic attitude. I certainly am not trying to trigger anyone to relapse back into active addiction but to demonstrate how this realization can be very freeing. We’ve already broken free of addiction and now living sober lives, now we can break free from this physicality and break through to a truly spiritual life full of manifestation and mysticism and what seems at times like magic. We continue raising our vibration from when it was at all time lows of active addiction to much higher in sobriety and now onward still to amazing and inspiring lives. Polarity In Real Life, Active Addiction and Sober Living
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! In the last episode I was talking about how so many addicts, whether in active addiction or living sober in recovery, always seem to look outside themselves for an inspiring story. They never seem to realize their own story is as amazing as the ones giving leads at your local AA or NA meeting. I am not at all suggesting we shouldn’t listen to those people but we also shouldn’t sell ourselves short either. In this episode, I go totally off the cuff with no outline. I am more than anything just reacting to a video I saw on YouTube Shorts and how what people in the comments were trash talking our life here and now in this present reality that we are in. Even addicts in recovery realize that we are here to gain experiences, to learn and grow. With as short as our lifespans are (on the cosmic scale anyway) we go through so much in such a short amount of time. The extremes in everything from environment to emotions can be hard to believe at times. It is not unlike the extremes in polarity between being in active addiction and sobriety. Whatever the case, we need to focus more on gaining experiences in this lifetime because what we take with us when we leave here will be knowledge and relationships gained, everything else will stay right here. Your Own Story is Inspirational, The Sobriety Secret
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! So often we, addicts, find ourselves looking outside of ourselves for inspiration to stay sober. Your story of sobriety is an amazing story of beating addiction and moving forward, so please don’t sell yourself short. In this episode, I talk about how we have got to stop wanting an amazing life and simply begin to BE what it is that we choose to be. Getting sober gave us an opportunity to reinvent ourselves and be the person that we choose to be. It allows us to not only shed that junkie mentality but to also adopt a new persona altogether. When coming up out of rock bottom at warp speed we are in a very unique position ini that we have an incredible amount of momentum in our lives already. Meaning, just by virtue of beating addiction and getting sober, we have generated upward momentum that we can then continue to ride and improve our lives at a rate of speed that is to be envied. Take advantage of this opportunity that sobriety has given you and continue to “Ride The Wave!” Much love and respect!Support the showVisit the MSA website at https://MySoberAddiction.comJoin the My Sober Addiction Telegram grouphttps://t.me/MySoberAddictionAlso, check out the Fasting For Change Telegram groupHttps://t.me/FastingForChangeFollow me on X https://x.com/@MattStevensMSACheck out my YouTube channel https://youtube.com/MattStevensMSAJoin the WhatsApp group! https://chat.whatsapp.com/GqNlxLA7WPVGHnZjzgGjTA

Back To Basics: Planning Life After Addiction and Staying Sober
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! After my last relapse in 2017, I was finally serious about sobriety and saw it as a way of life rather than just quitting heroin. Around that time, my dad told me that “people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.” I do not know where he got this old saying from but it is a good one. Moving forward in a life of sobriety can be scary, it’s not unlike death and rebirth. It can also be a very exciting time because it is an opportunity to reinvent ourselves. I hate to sound cliché but the possibilities are endless, seriously. (More on that in an upcoming episode) I talk a lot about the immense amount of upward momentum that is generated in addicts’ lives just by getting sober. The very act of doing something as big and dramatic as kicking active drug addiction is nothing to scoff at, it’s a total life reset. Sober living is, in and of itself, a whole lifestyle that most people can hang their hats on and be proud of. That’s a beautiful thing indeed but there is always potential for more, much more. When we are doing something new in our lives we usually start out small and gradually build momentum, and once that momentum reaches a certain point then what we are doing becomes a juggernaut that is steamrolling our goals and steadily picking up more steam. Getting that going is the hard part. That’s why our blast out of the rock bottom of active addiction into our lives of sobriety is a very unique opportunity, the momentum is already there. Also, when you’re coming out of “rock bottom” there is nowhere to go but up, right? I encourage people to take this as a chance to do something big with their lives, “Ride the wave!” We are here in this life, this realm, this existence for something! We didn’t go through the hell of addiction for nothing, and we certainly didn’t come out on the other side all clean and sober for nothing, either. So, what are we going to do? All we have to do is decide what it is and then begin moving in that direction, our Higher Power will kick in and take care of the rest. Co-Creating With Popcorn In A Simulation
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! When we realized we had had enough of life in active addiction and wanted to get sober once and for all we were told to admit that we are powerless over addiction and needed help. I will take it a step further and say that we aren’t necessarily “powerless” as much as we were just never wired that way, we were never meant to do all the work ourselves, our job is to design this new life free from addiction and then press the start button. What I mean is that we are the architects, our job is to design reality, not to actually build it. So, our part in beating addiction and getting sober is to create a blueprint for what sober living would look like and then take a step in that direction. At that point, our Higher Power steps in and puts into motion the actual “building” of this new life we have created in our imaginations. How things work is none of our concern, architects don’t know (or care) how the machinery that is used to build what they have designed works, they just know that it does. Addiction taught us this principle very well, that we are not able to do these things by ourselves, we can not by our own sheer willpower get sober. It also taught us that our desire to get sober and designing a life of sobriety in our imaginations and then taking just a few steps in that direction is all it took for something else to take over and make it all come together for us. What is that “something else,” Matty? Well, call it whatever you want, the universe, God, your Higher Self, etc. So, once we’ve learned this and are now living proof of it, why stop now? We’ve learned how we co-create our reality and how we can make it whatever we want it to be just by virtue of our imagination and a step or two to demonstrate our trust in the process, our Higher Power. Why not apply this principle to our lives over and over again? Why not be examples to others still suffering in active addiction and (oh, by the way) also create for ourselves the sober lives we truly want to live?Support the showVisit the MSA website at https://MySoberAddiction.comJoin the My Sober Addiction Telegram grouphttps://t.me/MySoberAddictionAlso, check out the Fasting For Change Telegram groupHttps://t.me/FastingForChangeFollow me on X https://x.com/@MattStevensMSACheck out my YouTube channel https://youtube.com/MattStevensMSAJoin the WhatsApp group! https://chat.whatsapp.com/GqNlxLA7WPVGHnZjzgGjTA

Recovery From Toxic Positivity, Addicted To Letting Go
Something on your mind? Send Matt a text here! Continuing our talk about toxic positivity, we go a bit deeper into the subject. We do have traumas and other negative things from our past that can hang around our necks dragging us down not unlike how it was when we were in active addiction. I say “not unlike” because its not the same thing as active addiction but we do need to recover from things in our past so that we can move forward in recovery with as few relapse triggers as possible. I know, any addict who wants to relapse is going to find an excuse to do so, but I’m referring to those traumas that we may have long ago attached meaning, and subsequently drug use, to in the first place, back when all this started. As I always say, getting sober and moving forward in your life of recovery (or sober living, if you’d rather) is a huge boost in momentum for your life, so “Ride that wave!” Life after addiction doesn’t have to be scary, we don’t have to live like we are constantly being bombarded with temptations and triggers to relapse. Instead, let’s look at this as an opportunity to completely clean out our “closets” and transmute our addictions and anything from our past into something positive. There’s a very good chance there’s an addict out there still suffering in active addiction who needs to hear your recovery story, who needs to see your example. Transmutation…that’s ol’ Matty’s new favorite word!
