In 1988 he moved to Colorado and transitioned to firefighting with the Eagle River Fire Protection District. In 1990, he joined South Metro Fire Rescue, where he dedicated nearly three decades, rising through the ranks to District Chief and Tour Commander, a role in which he oversaw 46 fire companies working across 5 Battalions out of 29 fire stations protecting over 500,000 residents. In 2019, Chief West left South Metro and has been serving as the Fire Chief of Front Range Fire Rescue in Colorado, leading the department with a commitment to excellence in service, safety, and professional development. ⠀Beyond his leadership roles, Chief West is passionate about firefighter training and education. Mike holds a Master’s Degree in Communication from Seton Hall University.  He also holds degrees in management and fire science.  As the owner of Fired Up Training Service LLC, he provides specialized instruction designed to enhance operational effectiveness and leadership skills in the fire service. Chief Robert Beattie ⠀Deputy Chief Robert Beattie, a distinguished 36-year veteran of the New Jersey fire service and the administrative Deputy Chief of the North Plainfield Fire Department in Somerset County. Rob began his journey in the fire service as a 16-year-old junior member of the Green Brook Volunteer Fire Company before joining North Plainfield’s volunteer call force in 1991. Following in his father Brian’s footsteps, he became a full-time firefighter in North Plainfield in 1999 and steadily rose through the ranks, serving as Captain, EMS Supervisor, and Training Officer before being promoted to Deputy Chief in 2021. Rob is also an experienced fire inspector and instructor, currently teaching in Somerset and Hunterdon Counties. ⠀Beyond his department duties, Rob has made an indelible impact on the broader fire service community. A longtime leader within the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey (PFANJ), he has served in various roles, including Vice President and local union President. When Engine 20 was disbanded in 1991, Peter was assigned to the newly reinstated Rescue Company 1.Promoted to Captain in June 1992, he spent 1 year at Ladder Company 8 then spent several years at Engine Company 15. In 1999 he took over as the Captain of Rescue 1, spending 7+ years there before being promoted to Battalion Chief in April 2006. Upon promotion he was assigned to the Training Division for just over a year. Upon graduation from the Proby School, Connie was assigned Engine 9 where she spent her first 5 years prior to transferring to Squad 4.  After 8 years as a Firefighter in the 4th Battalion, Zappella promoted to Captain in 2011 and became part of the Command Staff of Engine Co. 17. Connie stayed at 17 Engine until 2017 when she again promoted to Battalion Chief. As Battalion Chief, Zappella’s first assignment was the Training Division, where she became a Level 2 Fire Instructor and oversaw several recruit classes. During this time Chief Zappella also decided to join one those classes and became an EMT.  Chief Zappella was instrumental in creating the departments Field Training Officer Program, with the assistance of Lou Pepe and Chief Tony Della Rosa, which helps bring the Training Division up to compliance and increases the agency’s ISO rating. Chief Zappella filled the FTO position until assuming Command of the 2nd Battalion on Group A.  In November of 2022 Chief Zappella promoted again to Deputy Chief and was again assigned to the Departments Division of Training. For more than 31 years he worked in private industry for insurance carriers and attorneys. He opened his own private detective agency, Palumbo Investigations, in 2001. He was appointed to the Perth Amboy Fire Departments Uniformed Division in 2004. In 2010 Mullen was promoted to Lieutenant, followed by Captain in 2011. In October of 2013 Chief Mullen was promoted to Battalion Chief and assigned as Administration Chief, responsible for the department’s day to day operations. In 2017 Ed was named Acting Chief of Department until his promotion was made permanent in February of 2019.  In his time as Chief, Perth Amboy Fire Department has secured several large dollar grants making it possible to add staffing, rejuvenate the apparatus fleet, and acquire specialized equipment and training, adding to the department’s scopes of service.  Chief Mullen graduated from New Jersey City University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science. NJ Fire GuysRun#: 24-017Date: May 30, 2024Guest: Chief Denis Onieal  Chief Denis Onieal entered the US Army in 1967 and was Honorably Discharged in 1969.  Chief Onieal went on to join the Jersey City Fire Department in 1971 and rose through the rank’s from Firefighter to Deputy Chief. He retired in 1995 as to Acting Chief of Department, leading a uniformed force of 650 members. With the exception of his time as Chief of Department, he spent his entire time "in the street" as a line fire officer – including 15 years as a firefighter, lieutenant and captain in two of the city’s busiest ladder companies.  In 1976 Chief Onieal completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science from New Jersey City University, a Master of Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University, in 1978, and graduated with his Doctorate in Education from New York University (NYU) in 1990. He went on to teach in the Masters and Doctorial programs in education at NYU for five years.  After retiring from the Jersey City Fire Department, Chief Onieal was appointed as Superintendent of the United States National Fire Academy. During his tenure, the NFA staff increased enrollments from 15,000 to over 100,000 students per year; revised all curriculums so course received credit recommendation through the American Council on Education, established a nationwide fire training system in partnership with each state; instituted an alliance to standardize fire degree programs; and launched an on-line training program.  As the Deputy United States Fire Administrator, Dr. Denis Onieal was  responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the United States Fire Administration and the National Fire Academy.    Beginning on Sept. 12, 2001, he led the USFA’s team at the World Trade Center, working behind the scenes to help the New York City Fire Department re-establish their systems of command, control and on-site communications. In 2005, he was sent to Atlanta, Georgia, to lead the 4,000 firefighters to assist in the response to Hurricane Katrina. Chief Avillo is also a partner in Study Group, Inc., a business that helps firefighters and officers of career departments prepare for promotional exams.  Chief Avillo has a Master’s Degree in National Security Studies and a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science from the New Jersey City University, where he is also an Adjunct Professor in their Fire Science Program. Rob was promoted in 2023 to the rank of Lieutenant and is assigned to Engine Company 1 with responsibility of Marine 1. He has assisted with developing and establishing the department’s Response to Incidents of Domestic & Industrial Entrapment and is attached to the Fire Investigation Unit.  Lieut Policht is an Instructor with the Bergen County, NJ, Fire Academy and also serves on the NJ Division of Fire Safety's Fire Threat Task Force.  Policht has a Master’s Degree in Emergency Management and Homeland Security from Arizona State University and has been published in several trade publications.  He is a founder of and contributor to Flow and Vent, which is a website that's dedicated to fire and rescue training.

Most of all he is a proud father of three boys, and loving husband to an incredible wife.  Jim is a Career Lieutenant with Evesham Fire Rescue where he has served for 11 years. After being promoted in 2021 Lieut Hiesler served as CO of Station D Platoon  and is currently assigned to station 1, the “Main St Militia”. He has been proudly representing them as their CO since January of this year.  Jim is also Proud Veteran of the Global War on Terrorism. He faithfully served back to back tours in Syria and western Iraq - the “triangle of death”. Over the years, he has served with 4 volunteer, combination, and career fire agencies.In 1991, Chief Gabliks joined the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). DPSST sets professional standards for public and private safety professionals in the state of Oregon. And operates the Oregon Public Safety Academy. In 2010 he became the first employee to rise from the internal ranks and be named Director, a position he served in until 2020. He had the honor to serve under 3 governors.Chief Gabliks holds a Master's Degree in Public Policy and Administration from Portland State University.   He has also completed the Executive Fire Officer Program at the NFA and the Executive Development Institute at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.Chief Gabliks is Past President of the North American Fire Training Directors and serves on various state and national organizations, including the Drexel University Fire Injury Research and Safety Trends Advisory Committee and many others.     He is an active member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the New Jersey Career Fire Chiefs Association, and is a Life Member of the Oregon Fire Chiefs Association. Yes, he is the brother of the famous Maris Gabliks who served as the State Fire Warden of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service for more than a decade and is now the Cooperative Fire Specialist with the United States Forest Service and serves Deputy Incident Commander of the Northeast Area Type I Incident Management Team (IMT).     They are proud first generation Latvians and speaks, reads, and writes the language.

Where he focus’s on his guests time spent off the job.   Pip is the Director of 555 Fitness , a firefighter operated not for profit, that began with the mission to reduce line of duty deaths within the fire service. 555 Fitness has grown to  provide motivation and free workouts to Emergency Responders around the globe.  555’s Strength is Our Foundation Grant Program has donated over $100,000 worth of fitness equipment to departments nationwide.  Pip has both career and volunteer Fire and EMS experience, which includes working as a NREMT-P, dispatcher and instructor .  Pip enjoy’s going to work, and hosting the podcast, however his greatest joy is spending time with his family. In 2023 he published his book “The Training Officer: Do You Have What It Takes?” ⠀David holds Associate & Bachelors Degrees in Fire Science and Fire Service Administration from Columbia Southern University and is due to graduate this year with a Masters Degree in Organizational Leadership from Waldorf University.
