27: It Takes Two to Tango
Dear All, Going low-no contact with loved ones is hardly ever an easy decision. We may decide suddenly, but it’s almost always when we’ve just had enough. As therapists, we guide many of our clients to either heal from or mend complex relationships as appropriate. Regardless of what the end goal is for anyone, going no contact is not a decision made impulsively; it’s usually a long list and a combination of multiple factors that get us to the point of saying goodbye. Join us in this episode as we discuss the hows and whys of choosing ourselves, not for selfish reasons but for self-protection. We hope this episode brings about insight and reflection, regardless of which side of the no-contact you find yourself in. 23: To Whom it May Concern: Letter Writing as Therapists
Dear therapists, We have probably been asked to write letters for many things, temporary leave from a job, disability, the debatable ESA letters- the list goes on. Our clients and the world see us as a reputable source to make such determinations. Yet, there may be some things we draw the line at, perhaps things that go beyond our comfort or even competency. How do you have conversations with clients about what type of support you are able or willing to provide that is within your professional integrity? 22: Beyond the Session, Managing Administrative Tasks
Dear Therapists, Whether it’s agency, group, or private practice- we all have experienced the stress of administrative tasks. Why didn’t grad school tell us that talking to clients is only about 50% of our work? The rest is documentation, phone calls, and case management- Oh My! Let’s be honest; we are not done with our clients when they leave our office. During today’s episode, we want to validate that you are not a bad therapist if you get your notes done a little late, can’t remember to get to that email and choose lunch over picking up the phone and talking to that other provider. We hope this episode reminds you that you are not alone in your frustrations and it’s okay not to be okay with the expectations in our field. One common theme is “trying to establish power.” Codependency is a process that is happening between individuals. We can heal from it, but that healing starts with us. Join us this week as we delve deep into the concept of codependency, get vulnerable and normalize that this happens and it doesn’t mean that anyone is flawed. 13: The Headaches of Working with Insurance
Today we discuss insurance. In light of recent events, we thought it would be a good idea to talk about our perspectives and what we hear from our peers regarding working with insurances. To be honest, we don’t go into the nitty gritty details of claims and paneling process, we are straight up venting. As therapists, we are always trying to look at our glass half full instead of empty- but sometimes we just need to talk about how things can really suck. Grab your comfort item, we sure did as we discussed the following: The hell that is the paneling process. Insurance companies are not paying their providers fair wages. Insurances making their providers and customers jump through hoops to use the insurance they're already paying for. Denying client claims and dictating how, when, why, what their care looks like. Our health care system isn’t set up for preventative care. Expectations for documentation and determination for eligibility of services. Audits and "clawbacks" (cue internal screaming). Insurance and confidentiality. Being paid low rates can lead to burnout. To take care of our community, we need to take care of our providers. 12: TikTok Therapy? Ethics of Therapists on Social Media
Not going to lie, TikTok has helped in breaking the stigma of seeking therapy. While it has been incredibly helpful, like everything, it has its pitfalls. During this episode we get into discussing our POV on some therapists who are unfortunately perpetuating the pitfalls of “therapytok.” Here’s our take on what’s happening and why we think-in these therapists' efforts to make mental health accessible, they’re actually doing more harm to clients and the integrity of the field. Maleficence vs beneficence; therapists take an oath to do no harm. The fine lines of bartering. Why it’s important to be open to feedback. The importance of seeking peer supervision and support. Why TikTok lives are not an appropriate space to have therapy sessions. The issues of confidentiality when inviting individuals to receive “therapy” on a TikTok live. Why the maintenance period is important. 11: Balancing the Hats We Wear: Business Owner & Therapist
During this episode we go into talking about therapist mind and business mind. In graduate school we mostly hear about going into community mental health work and private practice is the “when you’re close to retirement” phase of your career. It doesn’t have to be that way, today we take a look at how to balance our CEO status and our therapist selves. Today’s points: Deciding policies that are in integrity with the way you run your business and who you are as a therapist. Boundaries and how to balance clinical and business aspects. How being too passive can harm ourselves, our business, our clinical skill and clients. Owning your CEO status. Policies we can’t control in agency work versus implementing your own policies when running your business. The pressure of thinking about our livelihoods and offering flexibility to others. Balancing the hats of private practice. Identifying typical characteristics of a CEO and therapist. 10: Experiencing Burnout as Therapists
Burnout, the silent career killer. As therapists, we are not strangers to how rapidly burnout can develop. If you will, it is one of the “hazards” that comes with the field. If not managed correctly, burnout can hinder us from being the therapists we imagine and want to be. If you’re experiencing burnout, grab your comfort items and settle in for well-deserved validation. Topics reviewed during this episode: The areas in your life where you can experience burnout and how it bleeds into your livelihood. Compassion vs. empathy fatigue How do we continue to show up for our clients when we have nowhere to pull from? Why it’s essential to address burnout to continue being an effective therapist. Emotional and physical manifestations of burnout. How do we raise awareness of our burnout and how to combat? Over-functioning is a trauma response. How our system fails providers. Why the narrative of self-sacrifice is not sustainable for anyone and even less someone in our field. How policies can help save us from burnout. What fills you up in your free time to help combat feelings of burnout. 07: Examining Our Ethics in Multicultural Counseling | Part 2
A two-part episode examining our ethics in multicultural counseling; It’s long been debated that the code of ethics- similar to the DSM, is developed from a westernized viewpoint. While some may argue that it is because we are America, what happens when we don’t make our code of ethics inclusive of the beautiful melting pot that is America? After all, America doesn’t only speak English. Join us as we discuss in length the multicultural and diversity issues we have encountered practicing in the field. Take a break from notes, sit in a comfy chair, and join us in our two-part episode! Some of the topics discussed during this two-part episode may be triggering for some. We understand that speaking about diversity and inclusion is essential in our field. We bear in mind that not everyone’s experience is similar, and we must, as allies, make room to both validate and make space for the experiences of others, not speak for them. We hope this conversation can exemplify how healthy discussion around multiculturalism can exist between people with diverse experiences and backgrounds. We firmly believe in striving toward cultural competency, racial equity, and diversity inclusion. If you are uncomfortable with the topics discussed, we encourage you to lean in with curiosity and be respectful when delivering feedback or asking questions. Part 2: Mandated reporting when working with BIPOC populations. The importance of leaning in with curiosity. The history of racism and prejudice when diagnosing/practicing in our field. Why BIPOC population historically does not seek therapy or health services. How politics can affect the way you advocate for marginalized populations. Ethical considerations with documentation. Microaggressions in the therapy room. Acknowledging other's experiences. The following excerpts discussed from the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics: The counseling relationship Confidentiality, Privacy, and Professional Responsibility Evaluation, Assessment, and Training Aida Morales is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and EMDR-trained therapist in Connecticut who is passionate about working with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, and a sense of self - caused by relational trauma stemming from attachment wounds and socio/cultural factors. To Niche or Not to Niche! That is the question. Niching is a pretty controversial topic amongst therapists. Join us as we explore this week our niching journeys; you know the drill, find a cozy spot to do your notes, plug in your headphones, and come along for the ride! We discuss the following points this week: Which populations make us feel fulfilled to work with. Your pain points can drive your attraction to work with a specific population.
