The best part of your day

In this podcast, the owner of Backward Arrow Modern Fitness in Abilene, Texas discusses the benefits of CrossFit and overall health across a whole range of topics.

  1. 33

    Options for nutrition plans...

Nutrition is a very important part of your health journey! Here are some types that we have seen work and be successful for a lifestyle change and not just a 4-6 week period. 1.) Macros: monitor the number of calories you are taking in and what they are made of. 2.) Quality of the food you are taking in such as Paleo or Carnivore diets. Listen to the podcast to hear and learn about the different types and find one that will benefit your lifestyle! We would love to help!

  2. 32

Why your nutrition is holding you back...

What are you eating?... There is NO way for you to outwork what you are putting in your face! What are the habits that you can create that can help you? People often don't like to work on nutrition vs. fitness because fitness is normally 1-2 hours of your day and nutrition is so many more hours of the day. Listen to this episode for more information to help you!

  3. 31

Why you are lost in the gym

Why people are unsuccessful in the gym... They don't know what to do. People walk into a gym and just get so overwhelmed. There are so many options, so many machines, and everyone is doing something different and people get stunned by just walking in . We here at BAMF have a system in place that we have really worked on to make it as easy as possible for you to walk in and feel comfortable. We have uplifting leaders that show you just what to do. We have incredible programming that allows you to just work hard and not have to think about what to do next. We also have a community that helps you along the way and never make you feel anything but good no matter your fitness level! We strive to make fitness FUN and we hope you find that!

  4. 30

    How to workout your core

In the last episode we talked about what your core truly is. Today we are going to talk about how to workout your core and the best ways to strengthen it. It is much more encompassing than you think. We want to do movements that maintain a neutral spine. We can do sit-ups, sure! But we can also do things like pull-ups, cleans, deadlifts, farmer carry, or even squats. The basic thing to consider when working your core is that your spine does not move and stays stable. Listen here to get more advice and information on what to do to workout your core!

  5. 29

The biggest buzzword in fitness...your "core"

My doctor says I should work on my core and point at their stomach. So many people will just do more sit-ups and crunches and planks not fully knowing what their core is. It has been hijacked by medicine and 'magazine fitness'. What is your core? Your core is any muscle, tendon, ligament that attaches to your pelvis. Listen to the episode to learn more about the core and how to actually work your core!

  6. 28

How to start your fitness journey?

How do you start? Are you nervous? Don't know how? Overwhelmed with so much information? 1.) Just START! So many people tell me that they are waiting for the best time for them when in reality there never really is a good time. There will always be something that gets in the way. The best time for you to start was yesterday and the next best time is TODAY! 2.) Don't just jump straight into the deep end. Start in the shallow end and take steps toward the deep end! The most important thing in fitness is to be consistent. People try to do too much in the beginning. They give it all they have the first few days and then they get sore and frustration sets in and leads to giving up. 3.) Seek help! There are a ton of resources and tons of leaders that can help you along this journey! We here at BAMF start slowly for you to learn and ease into your fitness journey. We answer all your questions and peel back the layers one by one! Let us help you! Contact us!

Why strength is more important than cardio

For a long time researchers believed that cardio was more important. That you needed your heart to be working well to live a long life and do it productively. More research is coming out that says even more important than cardio is for you to be strong enough. Let me tell you why...listen to the episode to gain more information about this interesting topic.

    Criteria for great workout programs

I have been doing fitness and rehab for about 13 years now... What makes a good workout program you ask.. Here are the 3 criteria points that I have narrowed it down to: 1.) Do it more often than not. You should work out 4 or more days out of the 7 days of the week. This should be FUN! It shouldn't be something you don't enjoy. 2.) You have to sweat and you have to breathe hard while doing it. For the older population and beginners sometimes that is as simple as walking. As you get more fit and want more goals it can change. 3.) (Most important). Have to have someone to share the program with. A workout partner would be great but that doesn't have to be the case. The biggest thing is to have someone that you can share your results with. Someone that will understand what you are doing and can also share in the suffering of it with you! It could be a friend in another state that you text everyday about your workout and they text you about theirs. Someone you can share your workout with is so IMPORTANT. These 3 things are crucial to have a great workout program! Follow us for more episodes on our journey.

    Why One-On-One Training Is Best?

BAMF is primarily a group training facility but there are some people that I see thrive and benefit from one-on-one training more. These people tend to have a few things going for them that make it better for them to work one-on-one with a trainer. The first being that they are extremely BUSY. It allows you to find time in YOUR schedule to get your workout in. The other type of person that benefits is they have a very specific problem or goal they are trying to accomplish. It might be a hurt back or it might be someone trying to lose 100 pounds. This allows them to really focus in on their goal and also not hurt their injury more by wanting to push themselves to the level of the person next to them in a group setting. Another person would be someone that has social anxiety and gets very overwhelmed just walking into the gym. Working one-on-one allows this person to still focus on their goals of fitness and work on their social anxiety as well. These are really good reasons to seek out one-on-one training and not let these things stop you from accomplishing your goals! You deserve to enjoy fitness just as much as anyone else and there is a place for YOU!

  10. 24

Why Groups Are Best For Working Out?

With these episodes I hope to offer guidance to help point you in the right direction! BAMF chooses to work out in groups! There is evidence shown that working out in groups holds more accountability for people. It dangles a carrot in front of you so much more than just trying to hold yourself accountable. Groups tend to be more FUN as well! Groups push your intensity just a little bit more than just working out by yourself. These are just a few reasons why we choose groups here at BAMF and why we see them work a lot more than just by yourself.

  11. 23

What Is The Mission Of BAMF?

I get asked what do I want to accomplish at Backward Arrow Modern Fitness.. Backward Arrow comes from a quote that says "An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties it means that it is going to launch you into something great"! We want to be the backward pull for people! My goal is to help people become even more, in their daily lives, than they could ever imagine. Listen and hear how we have seen life change for so many that have walked through these walls! Let us pull you backward so you can then be launched forward in life into something great... Follow us to keep up with our journey!

  12. 22

    Why Did I Start BAMF?

My name is Josh Boynton and I am the owner of Backward Arrow Modern Fitness! There are a lot of people that ask me "why" I started this place. Back in 2014 I decided to take my fitness to another level that would look different and really emphasize COMMUNITY! My goal was and is to bring the community of fitness closer together! Our workouts here at BAMF seem almost secondary compared to the community. Coming into this building to get a hug from friends, share the good and bad of your day with others that will listen, raising kids together, and going through big life moments together is such a sight to see. My biggest goal is to see the local community grow closer and closer together... Keep following us for more episodes on our journey!
