“Rebuilding the Guardrails in a Time of Cultural Chaos ”|| Meet Me in the Middle || Episode 61
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23 NIV)If you're like us, you may be wondering how to live in the tension of the current cultural climate. Recent headlines include the untimely, horrific deaths of Charlie Kirk (Conservative political activist and Executive director Turning Point USA), Iryna Zarutska (Ukrainian refugee), Melissa Hortman (former Minnesota House Speaker) and her husband, Mark, and many other precious children and adults. Along with that, it seems all bets are off as to how many choose to respond – often lashing out at anyone who doesn’t agree with them.This podcast is not about adding more laws. It’s not about which “side” is best. This is about our hearts.Where are the guardrails for our hearts – those healthy, personal, spiritual and physical boundaries that guard our thoughts, actions, relationships and conversations? What are the anchors for our heart to help us navigate our way through this season without falling off the edge of a cliff?Join Lindsay and Joy in conversation as they wrestle through this as two regular people longing to have the heart of Jesus no matter what is happening around us. We talk about “scapegoats and scoreboards” … “listening, being slow to speak, and speaking the truth in love”... "asking curious questions"... "don't hang up or give up."It’s our hope and prayer that, together, we all can share a little more light for the journey ahead. We welcome comments below to keep the conversation going. We just ask that you are kind and considerate and open to dialogue.Scripture quoted in this episode: “The Lord says, 'It is not too late. Return to Me with all your hearts. Come to Me with fasting and weeping over your sins. Tear your hearts, not your clothes. Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and full of compassion, patient and abounding in love. He keeps His promise and is waiting to forgive, not to punish.' "(Joel 2:12-13 The Clear Word Bible)Video Produced by: Lisa Jane BewleyCo-Hosts: Lindsay Pollard and Joy Waters Martin

“When God Interviews Us”Meet Me in the Middle -- with Lindsay Pollard & Joy Martin || Episode 60
Are you feeling like life is a bit surreal right now? Does the unshakable seem out of reach while everything is shaking around us? No time to come up for air before the next round hits? How do I tell the difference between what’s true and what’s fake news? Narratives? Agendas? Right? Wrong? How we can live with integrity in an ever-changing world.Do you feel loved and worthy to be chosen for this season or whiny and complaining wondering, “Why me, God?” (FYI, the hosts had 2 different answers. )If any of this resonates, then this is for YOU!Join us for a cathartic, honest conversation as we discuss hope in a turbulent and prophetic time. Let’s have some open dialogue as we seek to navigate where there might be some unifying spaces, looking up to see the long-range view and perspective from saturated time in God’s presence.As Lindsay brings up a thought to ponder… “The Believer’s Exit Exam: truth, choice, and service,” let’s ask ourselves, are we ready for the EXIT EXAM? Turns out, God interviews us with powerful questions that get to the heart of the things that trigger us, trip us up, tempt or allure us away from His best for us. We’ll share 5 key questions God asks that will help us navigate our changing world with integrity.Spoiler alert: Not only does God give us the questions (starting in Genesis), but He graciously gives us the answers, as well (see Matthew 24 and 25 for starters).God’s interview questions will keep us accountable, guarding our hearts from being deceived and our love from growing cold. We’ll see the answer for how to keep our anger in check, flip the script for good, anchor in Jesus, and not grow weary in doing good.Go back to the Garden of Eden with us. Let’s immerse ourselves in God’s presence as we walk with Him in the garden – without an agenda – listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit.*CREDIT: The book mentioned in this podcast is Healing What’s Within: Coming Home to Yourself—and to God—When You’re Wounded, Weary, and Wandering, by Chuck DeGroat, Published October 8, 2024, Tyndale House Publishers,ISBN: 978-1-4964-8314-0Video Production: Lisa Jane BewleyCo-Hosts: Lindsay Pollard & Joy Waters Martin

Maternity Health Care Crisis || Meet Me in the Middle -- Tiffany Martin || Ep.54, Pt. 1
As we start 2024, we begin with some vital topics interviewing individuals "in the trenches" doing the hard work to bring about lasting change in our communities. Meet TIFFANY MARTIN of the DandeLion House, a non-profit in New Market, Alabama. Tiffany is professionally trained doula as well as being in the process of completing her training in midwifery, soon gaining her Associates of Science in Midwifery and further attaining her license to specialize in home births. Tiffany founded the DandeLion Difference, an initiative "focused on reducing maternal health disparity, providing compassionate and quality care to low income and young mothers in need, and improving birth outcomes in Alabama and the Tennessee Valley area." (from CAPPA, https://cappa.net/cappamember/tiffany... ) In this first of 3 episodes, we seek to give an overview of the health care crisis-- especially as it relates to the state of Alabama. Tiffany's path as a doula and soon a licensed midwife is very much connected to a spiritual calling as she shares a kingdom perspective. Be sure to listen as she talks about "assignments from the Father," "listening to God in the shower," how midwifery connects with social justice and statistics related to pregnancy and delivery for women of color. This is her passion and with that passion, God has graciously provided a beautiful, peaceful, sprawling location for her non-profit, the DandeLion House, which offers a perfect space for Tiffany to use for training along with spiritual and personal encouragement. One area close to her heart is being able to share her knowledge and valuable experience by offering training to individuals who would like to become a doula at the DandeLion House as well as encourage those who would like to become a midwife. Cancer Treatment, Recovery & a Miracle || Meet Me in the Middle -- Penney Zimmerman || Ep.53, Pt. 3
In part 3 of Penney's story, she talks about her long road to recovery from cancer -- treatments, chemotherapy, "Red Devil" chemo, terrible side effects, and how it all affected her emotionally. She began to be more reserved, isolated and angry until God broke through the pain and began the healing-- physically, emotionally and spiritually. Part of that came on the heels of breast cancer when she had 2/3 of a lung removed in 2017. This became a catalyst for her to quit smoking after 45 years and follow her sister's advice -- "You have to fight." In this episode, she gives advice to those going through a similar journey and shares the comfort and hope she's been given through "Penney's Angels," music that revived her soul, and messages of hope. May these words bring hope to all who listen. Please comment below. We'd love to hear from you. A Story of Surviving Cancer ...Twice || Meet Me in the Middle with Penney Zimmerman || Ep.52, Pt. 2
In this 2nd of a 3-part series, Penney Zimmerman begins with that terrible phone call no one ever wants to get -- "It's cancer."--breast cancer. Years later, lung cancer raised its ugly head-- leaving her with the removal of 2/3 of one lung and another long road to recovery. After the shock came a long journey which included a mastectomy, experimental treatments with 4 kind of chemotherapy over a 2 year period, Legionnaires' disease (a severe form of pneumonia), serious infection, loss of a successful job due to chemo effects, and a near death experience. Miraculously, the outcome has left her stronger in her faith than ever before. This is a powerful story of hope, healing and family and friends who became, "Penney's angels". Her "Prayer warrior" sister wouldn't give up on her and neither did God. May these words bring hope to all who listen. A Story of Faith in Adversity || Meet Me in the Middle with Penney Zimmerman || Ep.51, Pt. 1
After 2 failed marriages, cancer, health issues, and loss of job, Penney shares her story of an emergency health crisis that lasted for 7 days --of which she emerged a changed person. It was as if she had spiritually and physically come back to life with renewed purpose and perspective. With this new perspective on life, she knew God was telling her to share her story with as many as would listen. This is a beautiful story of hope and healing along with the honesty of the raw anger and frustration with God in the middle. God continues to nudge her out of her comfort zone to share the journey with others in whatever way she can. Lindsay and I are honored to share her story in a 3 part series here on Meet Me in the Middle. Meet Me in the Middle || "The Reckoning Phase" & "The Redemption/Restoration Phase" {Episodes 7 & 8}
In episode 7, Sherry shares a vivid analogy of "The elephant and the teaspoon" to help us understand the hard work of the journey to healing. "You can't fast forward...can't skip anything ...have to go in order...one spoonful at a time...seeing the long road ahead." She was faced with the "cold, hard reality" and had to choose to "deal with it" but at the same time, making the best choice to "lean on her Creator." That's Who she fell in love with! In episode 8, Sherry chose to focus on the "journey" not the "gritty details" of her source of suffering ... moving forward, navigating seasons. Her motto: "Trust ...Be still and know that I am God." As those who have experienced deep suffering can often have the deepest joy, Sherry exudes JOY. She'll carry her scars for the rest of her life but there is peace and a desire to help others who might be going through their own dark valley and need a safe house...a safe place.
