This is part 2 of our interview with the legendary Ray Grant on Toot Your Own Horn: Music Matters, hosted by Lisa Canning from Lisa’s Clarinet Shop and Working Musicians Academy. Toot Your Own Horn with Sue Wills (Episode 59)

Welcome to another amazing episode of Toot Your Own Horn: Music Matters, hosted by Lisa Canning from Lisa's Clarinet Shop and Working Musicians Academy! In Episode 59, Lisa sits down with Sue Wills, whose path proves that a life in music doesn’t have to follow a straight line to be meaningful. Sue spent 34 years working for the Police Department, but her real beat was always the clarinet section. After an accident with a plastic clarinet and a 10-year break from music, Sue proves that it is never too late to pick up your instrument again. From running a rowdy German Polka band to playing alongside top military musicians, her story is the perfect reminder that music is a lifelong home. In this episode, you will learn: 1) The Origin Story: Why braces forced Sue to choose the clarinet (and why she stuck with it). 2) The Pivot: How she went from a "business major" dropout back to a first-chair musician. 3) The Community: The secret to finding your "family" in local community bands. Why she came back: Sue credits her husband—and one important conversation with a professional musician—for sparking her return to the stage after a decade of silence. Living near Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine bases, Sue found a unique community of retired military pros. This environment created a rare opportunity where high-level musicianship is part of everyday life, and Sue has been able to grow right in the middle of it. He recounts his initial uncertainty about playing the instrument and how he gradually developed a passion for music through school bands, marching bands, and later community ensembles. His story highlights the pivotal role of supportive teachers, memorable performances, and the camaraderie of playing in groups. Henry also reflects on the challenges of balancing music with adult responsibilities, such as work and raising a family. He candidly discusses how his musical pursuits paused for years but were reignited by serendipitous moments, like discovering the Chicago Recorder Society and attending adult music camps. These experiences not only rekindled his love for playing but also introduced him to new communities of musicians. Henry emphasizes the importance of accessible opportunities for adults to continue or return to music-making, advocating for initiatives like New Horizons Bands. Throughout the conversation, Henry's enthusiasm for music shines as he shares anecdotes about performing in various settings, from college bands to circus music groups like Windjammers Unlimited. He underscores the dual benefits of playing an instrument: personal fulfillment and social connection. His advice to aspiring musicians is simple yet profound—find a local group or band, explore different instruments, and embrace the joy of making music at any stage of life.

Toot Your Own Horn with Frank Silva (Episode 26)

Welcome to today’s episode of Toot Your Own Horn: Music Matters, where we explore the extraordinary journey of Frank Silva—a multi-talented musician whose path to a successful career in music is as fascinating as it is inspiring. Frank's story begins in his youth, heavily influenced by a surprising nudge from his mother. She encouraged him to join the school band, and at first, Frank wasn’t particularly dedicated to his music lessons. In fact, he often relied on his charm to impress his instructor by sight-reading his lessons, avoiding the hard work of practice. Much of this initial motivation stemmed from a desire to escape gym class—a creative way to avoid physical education! However, it was the opportunity to join the high school jazz band that sparked a genuine passion in Frank for music. This chance encouraged him to truly engage with his instrument, the saxophone, and he soon found himself immersed in the world of music. By the end of high school, Frank had developed his skill set beyond the saxophone, mastering the clarinet and flute as well. Opting for a practical career, he pursued an undergraduate degree in Engineering at UCLA. Still, his love for music remained strong as he continued to play in both the band and marching band throughout his college years. Frank's pivotal turning point came during his trips to the Aspen Music Festival, where he studied clarinet and honed his saxophone skills under the mentorship of Gary Gray. These experiences laid the foundation for a significant decision—turning away from engineering to fully commit to music. After securing a technical sales job in engineering, Frank quickly realized that it wasn’t the right fit for him. This epiphany prompted a major shift in his life, leading him to USC to study clarinet under the legendary Yehuda Gilad. During his pursuit of doctoral studies at UC Santa Barbara, where he reached the "all but dissertation" stage, Frank confronted the harsh reality: securing university music education jobs was just as competitive as a professional performing career. But fate had more in store for Frank. A random call from fellow clarinetist and repair technician Chris French changed everything. Chris was seeking a qualified repair technician to take over a position he was vacating, and Frank saw this as an unexpected opportunity. He embraced the chance to learn repair techniques, which ultimately led him to run the repair shop for Big Valley Music—an integral part of his career. Today, Frank Silva boasts a versatile and fulfilling career in music, seamlessly blending performance, education, and instrument repair. His journey reflects resilience and dedication, showing us that success comes in many forms. We’re incredibly fortunate that Frank has chosen to devote his life to music, enriching the lives of those around him through his diverse talents. Join us as we delve deeper into Frank's remarkable journey, exploring the moments that shaped his career, the challenges he faced, and the music that continues to inspire him. Tune in for an engaging conversation filled with insights, anecdotes, and the genuine passion of a musician who truly embodies the essence of following one’s dreams.

Toot Your Own Horn with Benny Romero (Episode 23)

It’s not too often you find someone getting into the music industry where generations before have not proceeded him. But not for Benny Romero. No one In Benny’s immediate family even played a musical instrument. It was a couple of generations back, in fact, before he could find anyone interested in the arts in his family at all. And yet, it took just one ‘let’s try all the band instruments’ open house night- which any music store of quality will let you do- come in and see what instrument you like. Well, for Benny that happened in 7th grade- kind of late- but not too late to fall in love with the clarinet. It was the need for its repair and the cost, and a band director that saw his spark, who switched him from his pawn shop Bundy, in sorry shape, to a school bass clarinet. That support sealed Benny’s love forever of the clarinet family of instruments. From high school into college, Benny took the scholarship he was offered to become a band director. But something happened to his health along the way and he didn’t quite finish. And frankly, Benny also couldn’t see himself standing in front of the kids on a podium. It just wasn’t for him. But he still loved to play the clarinet and after a little bit of time in the automotive industry, applied and landed a job working at a national music chain. It was there he learned some basic repair that sure came in handy when he got a promotion into school service- which happened pretty quickly. Once Benny started to call on band directors, who always had something in need of repair, Benny saw how he had some of the skills to help them keep kids engaged and learning to play like his band director did for him once. It was when Benny met Bruce Marking, former head of woodwind repair for Buffet Crampon, that totally sparked his curiosity about a career as a woodwind technician. Lucky for both of us, Lisa’s Clarinet Shop launched our introductory repair class and Benny was in Year 1 in the inaugural class with Bruce Marking at the helm. Much to our surprise, Benny stayed with it and went on to learn Clarinet, Saxophone and Flute with us. Now, almost 5 years later, he is using those skills every day at Songbirds Music, Art, and Dance Center in Oviedo Florida. Having helped grow it from the ground up, and now able to complete repairs for the directors he calls on, Benny is just getting warmed up doing the things he loves to do. Take a listen to this episode and learn how someone falls in love with school service in the music industry. Benny Romero loves the industry and always has. He especially loves music and believes its something anyone can enjoy. His story about how he got a parent to start to play not one but two instruments, will warm your heart. But then again, when your with Benny you can’t help but love music because of how much he does.

Jonathan Knopfel grew up in a family where music and farming were both important. With a mom who was a school teacher and a church organist, and a dad who was a farmer, either direction felt like a possibility. Having started on piano, and it not working out, Jonathan started on the saxophone in the 5th grade on a school owned instrument, and it was in such disrepair he quit band. After a year of art class, he really missed music. it was his older sister who played the flute who inspired him to learn to play it and he did all the way through high school. However, with his family being in farming and his mom having held a really stress filled teaching position, especially towards the end of her career, Jonathan looked up to his mom and when she encouraged him to pursue a degree in agriculture, he did. Toot Your Own Horn: Music Matters with Gail Levinsky (Episode 17)

I am excited that Gail Levinsky is our 17th episode of Toot Your Own Horn: Music Matters and airs on New Year's Day 2025! Gail Levinsky started on the violin in the 3rd grade until her teacher made her feel unsafe in the classroom from the way he behaved in front of the class with another student. While in hindsight it may have been overplayed in her mind, that experience caused her to decide she should play a different instrument and join the band instead of play in the orchestra, at the time. With a brother who played the clarinet 3 years her senior, whom she looked up to, Gail decided that would be her next instrument. Although she didn’t have an instrument of her own, for a long time sharing it with her brother, Gail’s band director discovered that he could ask her to try to play the bass clarinet, the Eb clarinet, and the alto clarinet- because Gail was up for any musical challenge-- before she finally said, ‘that’s enough’! Indeed, it was the alto clarinet that brought her to her instrument- the saxophone. (Of course, it was the alto clarinet that did that.) Having attended my alma mater Northwestern University, Gail always acted like a professional in school, having taught privately in the Garland area in Texas for 7 years, before returning to school for advanced degrees. Her career path was really well thought out, albeit, not fully within her control how it would turn out. From her first job she didn’t dream would be in Mississippi, to her long career as an educator at Susquehanna University, in Pennsylvania, this episode will inspire you to believe if you want to be a musician you can be. Having honored the teachers who inspired her throughout her career, this episode has some wonderful stories of how truly talented students learn from professional musicians while still remaining true to who they are. Wishing all of our listeners to experience the joy of wind playing, like Gail does, in 2025.

Toot Your Own Horn: Music Matters with David Young (Episode 16)

David Young didn't grow up in a musical family. But from an early age, he just loved the sound of music. Having been told the flute was a girls instrument, David started on the saxophone and before high school was over, had learned to play clarinet flute and saxophone. It was a family friend who drove him to sax lessons, with Fred Hemke, that sealed his desire to pursue music as a career. And, although he attended Northwestern University for music, he was making money performing as a doubler that he never actually finished. It was a fluke that he learned oboe for a show, which in the end was the most important instrument of all for him to learn as it cemented his career, bringing him to New York, Broadway, and to an endless stream of work. This episode is airing on Christmas Day, and it could not be a more fun ride learning about David Young music career. I hope you will consider giving yourself the gift of music and that this episode inspires you to!
