The Philosophy of Running by George Sheehan.
Episode 107: The Philosophy of Running by George Sheehan. Why do we run? And why does the answer change as we get older? In this episode, we explore the timeless wisdom of George Sheehan — physician, runner, and the original voice asking not how we run, but why.Drawing from Running & Being, Sheehan’s essays, and insights from his son Tim in a Ted Talk, we look at running as identity, partnership with the body, a source of meaning, and a discipline that creates freedom. For masters runners especially, his ideas feel more relevant than ever. This is a reflective, heartfelt exploration of how running evolves with age — not as decline, but as refinement. A reminder that we don’t stop running because we get old; we get old because we stop running.Helped in research by a Ted Talk by George's son, Tim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aII5dYK3v_QPodcast support: buymeacoffee.com/mastersofrunningpodcastIf you enjoy the podcast and want to help cover costs like Zoom, editing software; kit and future development like my planned live shows, you can now support the show through the trusted creator support app, 'Buy me a coffee.' Cross-country.
In this episode, inspired by the recent Irish trial for the 5-Nations XC, I look at the history and benefits of XC. I also hear from a former guest, Sonja Friend-Uhl from Florida who's an advocate of XC and coaches a successful university team. Anne Gilshinan & Tony O' Brien.
This is my 3rd coach/athlete interview and it's another fabulous one. It features 2 previous guests who've since started a very fruitful coach/athlete bond. Anne Gilshinan recently became the first W60 under 5 minutes for 1500m after over 2 years returning from injury. Here she talks about that record and winning gold in Gothenburg and we hear Tony's perspective on the race as a coach. Anne also discusses her time off and how she dealt with that and how Tony started coaching her. We hear about their methods, future plans and acknowledge all the help Anne gets and the brilliance of her adversaries. A wonderful episode. European Masters Indoor Championship 2024.
This episode is on the theme of competition and is divided into 3 sections: friendship, nerves and race day prep.I spoke to as many people as possible around the stadium and captured the stadium atmosphere. The lack of range of nationalities is due to the language barrier and some nervousness by athletes to chat, so sorry if your country is not represented. There are wonderful nuggets of information here from athletes of different levels and what's clear is- we all go through the same thing whether we've not made a final or have won medals like many chatting here. I'm really proud of this episode. To help support the podcast & cover costs for more episodes like this, please consider one of the 3 very safe ways below🙏. Your help would be much appreciated.
