THINNING OF THE VEIL

Sometimes the struggles with toxic perfectionism stems from not understanding the grace given by Jesus Christ. In this talk, originally given on July 12, 2011, by Brother Brad Wilcox, he explains the doctrine of grace. Grace is not something that we earn, it is given because of the love of our Savior Jesus Christ. The enabling power of grace helps us to become like our Heavenly Parents. The gospel has never been about check lists but about our diving destiny of returning to live once again in our celestial home. Brother Wilcox superbly teaches this most important truth and doctrine in an understandable down to earth way. Some of our mental health challenges can be alleviated just by knowing and apply this doctrine in our lives. It truly is a most glorious doctrine indeed. There is a plague that's ravaging in this latter day generation. Mental health struggles including depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges are prevalent in all cultures and people around the world. Unfortunately, this can often lead to the false feelings that the world would be a better place without us in it. The scourge of suicide has touched to many in our society today. In this discussion with Sister Reyna Aburto, we discuss how we as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints should approach this very sensitive topic. Within her own very difficult experiences, including the loss of her father from suicide, Sister Aburto testifies of the peace that can eventually come from really understanding the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Through many revelatory experiences, including dreams and other thinning of the veil experiences, she has found comfort in knowing there is a plan for all and that our loved ones are involved in the Gathering on the other side of the veil. There is healing that can occur as we struggle to feel God's love even in the midst of battling with these very real and tangible trials. Can children receive answers to those Intercessory prayers on behalf of those on the other side of the veil? As a mother, Whitney Rigby has sought diligently to help her children believe that they can receive answers to prayers, and to teach them the patterns of how the Spirit speaks. Her son Oliver, who's 12,  took note of his mother's testimony and had a special experience with the Spirit. He had a strong impression that someone needed their work done on the other side of the veil, and shortly after received the name of that ancestor. Oliver's parents diligence in teaching their children to be mindful of impressions was evident in his ability to receive revelation on behalf of this ancestor and many more since. Whitney herself has received angelic ministrations to help guide her and sustain her during very difficult times in her life, noting that the veil has been very thin for her from time to time. The example of a righteous mother availeth much and it is evident in the testimony of her children. Mother's are not perfect, but have a huge impact on their children and upon the generations. Stacie Dye,  had a revelatory experience in the temple where she felt like the ancestor that she was doing the work for, possibly had a sister. Not sure how to move forward, Colette decided to walk her though it on a live episode. In this video Colette goes through the process that begins with revelatory whisperings, to finding those who are lost and then taking them to the temple. It has been prophesied that in the latter days that, “Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many ofthe good women of the world (in whom there is often such an inner sense of spirituality) will be drawn to the Church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the Church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives, and to the degree that [they] are seen asdistinct and different, in happy ways, from the women of the world.”(Spencer W. Kimball) Sister Wendy Nelson, in a BYU Woman's Conference talk on May 3, 2007, pointed to this statement and then elaborated on how we can seek out and attain to this glorious mission that we were foreordained to. As covenantal women of the church, we must seek to understand how to gain the power necessary to bring about great miracles, not only to ourselves but to all the sons and daughters of God. We have been given many great and precious promises as we fulfill the measure of our creation. As we strive to understand our individual missions the Lord will bless us with the strength, power, and revelations that we seek to bring about much good and thwart the powers of Satan.  Moroni testifies that angels are sent to "minister unto the children of men." There are times of trouble and trials in our lives, times where we feel that the heavens are definitely closed.  War broke out in the pre existence between those who chose to follow Jesus Christ and those who chose to follow Satan. That war has been carried into mortality. Satan will diametrically oppose anything or anyone that is good. It is part of the plan of salvation that we may know good from evil. Because we have been marked by Satan as followers of Jesus Christ, he will stop at nothing to distract, attack, and stop our work in the Gathering of Israel. Thinning of the Veil experiences will come from both sides as their is always opposition in all things. However there is no need to fear, Satan is bound by laws that he has to obey. If we use our agency in defense of God's kingdom, we will be sent legions of ministering angels to defend us against Satan's oppressive reach and conquer he who seeks to destroy all. In this BYU Hawaii Devotional, Sister Kwon, relates her family's miraculous conversion to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through a series of dreams to the matriarchs of her family, one by one each was brough to the waters of baptism. As mentioned in several patriarchal blessings, many of their ancestors work began to be done in the temple. Through miracles big and small, her family chain began to be sealed. The greatest lesson that she learned through all of these great manifestations? She uses the example of Kerstin Ngatuakana who was from New Zealand, but has ancestors from Sweden. Her family tree on her Swedish side, stopped in the early 1800's and she was stuck. Colette walks through step by step how she helped Kerstin find more family members and how she was able to push past that part of Kerstin's tree. In the 1970's Alex Haley wrote and book and a subsequent movie was filmed called Roots. It is the saga of African American life based off the genealogy of Alex Haley. During the process of doing research for the book and show, their were several experiences where the veil was thin. His ancestors were clearly helping him to move the work forward. A friend of Alex Hayley was Elder J. Richard Clarke, who was at the time overseeing the work in the Church's Family History department. Elder Clarke spoke at a BYUI devotional in February of 1993, and recounted the spiritual manifestations that Alex Haley related to him. In early 1863 a terrible injustice occurred to the people of the Shoshone tribes. Soldiers murdered many native men, women, and children. In the aftermath of this horrible tragedy, healing in some tribe members became a reality through the dreams and visions of their Chief, Sagwitch. Cultures down through the ages have exhibited very similar religious practices to our current modern temple worship. Matthew B. Brown at a FAIR conference in 2011 brings to light many evidences that ancient Israelite temple worship and early Christian temple worship were very, very similar to our own. He presents yet more evidences that temple language, symbols, and practices have been lost in our historical view of the Lord's work. It is important to understand that these lost practices and doctrines have been and will continue to be restored in these latter days. In 1921, a group of Elder's were ministering on the island of Maui. Elder David O. McKay, Hugh J. Cannon, E. Wesley Smith, David Keola Kailimai and Samuel Harris Hurst Jr., met to recount past miracles that attended the missionary work preceding them in the islands. George Q. Cannon and Joseph Fielding Smith had laid the ground work through many miracles and manifestations. During a special prayer of gratitude some of the men experienced a parting of the veil in in varying degrees.  Hugh J. After having offered a sacrifice that echoes our own temple worship today, Adam and Eve, "made all things known unto their sons and daughters". Therefore we should see evidences of temple worship in some form, in many cultures and ancient worship ceremonies around the world. In this episode we examine the ancient prayer circles and civilizations in the United Kingdom that worshiped their own Deity in very similar fashions that we worship in the temple. Even outward symbols on our temples represent the same symbols that these ancient peoples found important to surround themselves with. Truly the Endowment is of ancient origin and has been restored in these latter days. We are all part of the same family and were taught originally by the same parents.  What exactly does it mean to be endowed with power? Certainly there are a lot of ways to answer that question. In this article written by Peter B. Rawlins for the BYU Journal in 2012, he approaches it through a missionary lens. He details what each ordinance means in our gaining of priesthood power and the work of the Gathering of Israel on both sides of the veil. It is valuable to study a lot of different perspectives when trying to understand the nature of  power, that is gained in the temple. There are many of us whose families are devastated by generational trauma, current struggles in family relationships, or current societal degradation. This is not a news flash to our Savior and Heavenly Father. They knew the world, society, and families at large would be in state of swift deterioration in the last days. Knowing this, they provided a way and place for healing to happen. In temples we find the healing waters that lead us to Jesus Christ. Only through binding ourselves to Him will the generations past, present, and future find healing. This episode is filled with miracles and revelatory experiences that prove that it is possible to heal that which has been broken. Although Kim Olsen's ancestors included the Boggs of Missouri, her first marriage ending in divorce, and her family being rocked by suicide, she found the transforming power that can only come when we turn our hearts to the Savior in the temple. Healing is possible and can transform the generations. Miracles will be abundant, hearts will be healed, and the rending of the veil will be given to those who seek to mend the unmendable through temple ordinances and covenants.  When we attend the temple we are surrounded with symbols that can teach us about Jesus Christ. If we have eyes to see, the nature of our Heavenly Father and the Savior can be revealed to us in many ways. Elijah is a well known and loved prophet. The sealing power was restored to the Earth through him in Kirtland Ohio, on April 3, 1836. The returning of Elijah and the restoring of priesthood power was a fulfilling of prophecy and was given in preparation for the glorious work that would transpire in the latter days. Because the work of the Father and the Son is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal lives of mankind,  we have temples dotting the earth and the sealing of fathers to children is happening at an accelerated pace. Many accounts are noted of the manifestations that happened at the Kirtland Temple solemn assembly and dedication. However, there were many revelatory experiences that happened before the actual dedication of the temple. In January of 1836, many elders of the church experienced heavenly manifestations, angelic ministrations, visionary experiences and much, much more. As they prepared for the upcoming solemn assembly by organizing, sanctifying, and learning of God's commandments, they were truly blessed with many thinning of the veil experiences. The revealed pattern for ancient solemn assemblies included an blessing and outpouring of spiritual gifts and power. If we know the pattern, we can understand what our experiences can be as we choose to participate in solemn assemblies in a higher and holier way. We know John Groberg from the "Other Side of Heaven" fame. But, most do not know that he was the Temple President for the Idaho Falls Temple. In that sacred calling, there cannot help but be additional insights into temple service and worship. In this talk, Brother Groberg testifies of the important role that temples should play in our lives and the reality that we can be blessed in so many ways as we serve our ancestors. He teaches that revelation can be received in these holy houses of the Lord. He says, "Temples are among the portals he uses to convey His eternal truths to earth." Preliminary and in preparation to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the gathering must occur in great numbers on both sides of the veil. In this mighty work we are not alone. Angels are sent to bear us up, protect us, and support us in our latter day gathering efforts. Almost always, those angels sent are our loved ones beyond the veil. Colette takes us on her own personal journey in this episode of the Gathering Academy. This experience began with a sacred dream, in where she saw her grandfather, and knew he needed help. After her revelatory experience she went to work, trying to locate the reason for the dream. Colette walks you through how she found lost ancestors that she didn't even know about. Using  FamilySearch, obituaries, Ancestry and other tools, she was able to find the people she believes was the reason for her Grandpa's visit. The last step in this journey is asking permission from living loved ones to see if she can get the ordinances done for her long lost relatives. Kerstin Ngatuakana, is a native of New Zealand. A common spiritual gift that seems evident in Pacific Islanders, is dreams and visions, among many other gifts. Richard O. Cowan was a BYU Professor who wrote many articles about the relationship between Temples through out the ages. In our day, we cannot fully understand the nature of the ordinances and covenants made in any of the Lord's Holy Houses without a study of how and why these covenants were made anciently. Everything, even including the building of these structures have been received by revelation, showing God's will in all things. Patterns continually repeat themselves and it is no different when it comes to Temples.  In 1847, a mighty miracle occurred where a newspaper from England arrived in Logan, Utah, 3 days later. The result was that many Ballard ancestors were able to receive their temple ordinances. While this miracle is well known, there were other miracles experienced by the saints in England during this same timeframe. In this episode, we review the initial miracle, and then speak with Colin Williams who researched the experiences of the saints who decided to stay in Thatcham, England while their friends and families left to be with the Saints in Nauvoo and beyond. In studying the lives of the faithful saints left behind, Colin found their stories to be inspiring and uplifting.  Colin and his friend, Rachel Guy, take us on a tour of the very cemetery that was mentioned in The Newbury News article by the "Wanderer".  Truly, the Lord is merciful in His caring about the one. Sometimes when doing genealogical research, we get spiritual promptings to take a certain class, look in a certain place, or focus on one family in particular. Colette in this episode describes her revelatory process that began with a simple thought that lead her to attending a class at Roots Tech. That class lead her to other sources including a New Zealand Newspaper site called Papers Past. She uses Papers Past, Family Search, and Ancestry to show the process of taking one step at a time in navigating  finding lost families. Rosalie found the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Australia when she was 18. As she learned the doctrines of the gospel, her love for her ancestors grew exponentially and her desire to gather her family to the temple become a life long pursuit. Mandy Crane was raised in a small town in Australia, in a family where spiritual gifts were the norm not the exception. The Book of Revelation contains several visions of the Savior, Jesus Christ. It's chapters are full of symbolic meanings and prophesies of the latter days. John sees 144,000 high priests clothed in white robes laboring in the Lord's vineyard for the final time. Richard Draper describes in detail who the Lord is referring to and what work that they have yet to preform. This article, "The Exalted Lord" was part of a book called,  "Shedding Light on the New Testament", originally published in 2009. Richard takes the reader through the meanings and symbolism behind all four of John's visions of the Savior in the book of Revelation. All of them prophesy about the swift messengers that will live in the latter days and the mighty work that these messengers will undertake. In 1834, Jonathan Hale and his wife Olive, were baptized as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. That began a journey of soul stretching, discipleship for both. They were determined to serve the Lord at all costs and to do whatever was asked of them as they followed the prophet Joseph Smith and began to serve in God's Kingdom on Earth. Unfortunately, during their journey west, both were taken home to the other side of the veil, leaving small children to cross the plains by themselves. With the aid of Heber C. Kimball, those children made it safely to the Salt Lake Valley, with their testimonies intact. As the church grew and temples began to built up in numerous places the children knew they needed to be close to one. Logan valley became their new home as there was a newly built temple there. Through a series of miracles they acquired numerous ancestral records. They were stalwart in preforming the ordinances for their dead with the help of then temple president, Samuel Roskelley. At the completion of this family's work, a strange, miraculous, spiritual phenomena occurred at the Logan temple and was witnessed by many near and far. In the book of Revelation and in various other scriptures, there is reference to a group of High Priests who will be called and elected to bring others of the house of Israel to the Church of the Firstborn in the last days. In a BYU Hawaii speech given on November 23, 2010, then Brother Clark G. Gilbert gave a talk about private and institutional frontiers. He related some advice that Brother Kim B. Clark gave to him, "If you want to know the Savior, go to the frontier because that is where you will see him in action.  It is at the frontier where he does  His work." When we look at the work of the Gathering of Israel through that lens, we understand that there is a largely untapped frontier, the Spirit World, where so many have passed on and need our help. As we understand the role of Redeemer and Savior through the example of Jesus Christ, we will find Him doing the work of bringing to pass the immortality and eternal lives of our Heavenly Father's children. In Isaiah 58:12 we read a prophesy and a description of a distinct group of saints living in the latter days. "And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in." Since the days of Adam, many have chosen to walk away from the covenant path or have not been given the opportunity to make sacred covenants with the Savior. The generations, you might say, are in need of much healing and repairing. Adele Marcum, has spent most of her life trying to repair the breach that has occurred within her own family and in the broken lineal chain of others as well. She works as a professional genealogist and has worked some of that time at FamilySearch and Ancestry. In this episode she testifies of the many miracles that happened behind the scenes during her time at FamilySearch. She also testifies of her own thinning of the veil experiences that helped to shape and mold her work in the Gathering of Israel. Truly as the Lord prophesied in Isaiah, there would be many saviors, willing and able in the last days to save the generations. The healing and strengthening of the family of Adam is now underway in temples all across the world, restoring the promises made to the fathers and repairing the many breaches in God's family. The late prophet, Russell M. Nelson, consistently and emphatically declared that the most important work taking place on earth today, is the the gathering of Israel. To an audience of youth around the world, he taught that our focus should be to gather God's children on both sides of the veil, in preparation for the Second Coming of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Sister Wendy Nelson, also proclaimed that the gathering is happening now in all of the tribes scattered across the Earth. Since the day of that broadcast, June 3, 2018, the work of the gathering has moved forward at an accelerated pace through increased missionary service and through temple and family history work. It is a work of upmost importance in this last dispensation and we have been invited to participate in the effort and miracles that are inherent in the gathering of Israel. After the prophet, Joseph Smith was murdered, the church faced uncertainty as to it's future. The members were left shaken and confused on what the path looked like moving forward. Who was to take the prophetic mantle. During this time of great upheaval a few men stepped forward to profess their right to step into the prophetic line of succession. On August 8, 1844 the saints met to resolve this matter near the temple in Nauvoo. To aide the saints at the time in helping them know who the right man to sustain as the next prophet, the Lord opened the eyes and ears of many as the prophetic mantle fell on Brigham Young. Most congregants either saw, felt, or heard Brigham Young appear as Joseph Smith, confirming the Lord's will that Brigham Young was to be the successor of Joseph Smith, allowing the church to move forward in it's rightful place within the restoration of all things in the latter days. The Lord has proved time and time again through out history that He is guiding and directing all things through revelatory, thinning of the veil experiences to all who have eyes to see and ears to hear. Many prophecies about the latter days are being fulfilled in our days. The signals that the return of the ten tribes had begun were the coming forth of the Book of Mormon and Moses restoring the priesthood keys necessary so that Israel could again be gathered and the Ten Tribes restored again into the covenant fold of God. What does the restoring of the Ten Tribes actually entail? Does this mighty gathering happen through missionary work or through a massive group migration? In the house of the Lord, those who enter, choose to make sacred covenants, yoking themselves to the Savior, Jesus Christ. Taking part in these sacred ordinances endows you with power from on high. But what does that power look and feel like in our regular, everyday lives? What are some of those inherent spiritual gifts that can aid each of us to help prepare the world for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ? In this episode Barbara Morgan Gardner helps to answer some of these very common questions. This talk was originally given at a BYU Devotional on July 11, 2023. She teaches that each of us were foreordained to gather Israel and that inherent within this sacred calling we are given spiritual gifts and revelations to help us bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of men and women through all generations of time.
