Finding a Therapist: What Nobody Tells You
Have you been thinking about therapy but aren't sure where to start? Or maybe you tried it once, it didn't feel right, and you've been putting it off ever since? In this episode, I'm answering the questions I get asked most often about finding a therapist — from how to know if you even need one, to what to ask on a consultation call, to what to do if the first person you try isn't the right fit.I'm sharing what I know professionally as a registered social worker who has provided therapy for years, and what I know personally as someone who has reached out for support herself.Because I know what it's like to sit in the hard stuff alone. And I don't wish that for anyone. In this episode we cover:• How to know if therapy is right for you • What kind of therapist to look for • How to know if it's a good fit • What to do if the first therapist isn't right • Questions to ask on a consultation call • Common myths about therapyYou don't have to figure everything out alone. You just have to take that first courageous step.Ways to stay connected:Website - groundingwithruth.comCounselling - Psychology Today ProfileFree Guide - No Broken, BuriedInstagram - Grounding with Ruth

Tired in a Way Sleep Can't Fix: Burnout and Finding Your Way Back with Mel Grime
Have you ever done all the "right" things — eating well, holding it together, showing up for everyone and everything — and still felt like something wasn't right? That's where this conversation starts. In this episode I'm talking with Mel Grime, a burnout coach, registered holistic nutritionist, and yoga teacher who helps women step out of survival mode and back into themselves. Mel knows this territory personally. In 2017 she hit a point where her body was no longer letting her push through and keep going the way she always had.We talk about what burnout actually looks like from the inside, why so many women don't recognise it until their body forces them to pay attention, and what it can look like to find your way back. Not by doing more, but by slowing down and learning to listen. We also talk about people pleasing, self-trust, strong independent woman conditioning, and the pressure so many of us feel to keep holding it all together.I loved this conversation and I think a lot of women are going to see themselves in parts of it.Connect with Mel:Website: melaniegrimerhn.com Instagram: @melaniegrimerhnFree resource from Ruth:If something in this episode resonated and you're wondering where to start, Not Broken, Buried is for you. Coming Back Before I'm Ready
After almost a month away, I’m back — and in this episode I’m talking honestly about where I’ve been. Over the past few weeks, Keith and I have been navigating a flooded basement that turned into a major reconstruction project, weeks without heat and running water, and the anticipatory grief of learning that our cat Gus has cancer. But this episode isn’t really about the logistics of a hard month. It’s about what came up underneath it all. I talk about the old beliefs that resurfaced immediately, the nervous system responses that got loud fast, and the difference between knowing the work intellectually and trying to live it in real time when life genuinely falls apart. I also talk about:asking for helpboundariesthe guilt of stepping backthe pressure to keep performing okaynessand the strange tension of having a public-facing business built around authenticity while trying not to turn grief into content. The work doesn’t make us immune. But it can change our relationship to what comes up. I’m not at a hundred percent. But I’m here. You can learn more about me and my work at groundingwithruth.com.

You Have a 100% Track Record: A Conversation with Zulma Williams
This week I sat down with Zulma Williams — licensed clinical social worker, founder of Dragonfly Therapy Services, and the swearing therapist. Zulma started her social work degree at 42, survived breast cancer, built a thriving practice, and at 60 packed up and moved to Panama to wake up to the sound of the ocean every morning. Her motto is: I had cancer. Cancer did not have me. We talked about what it really means to keep going when life knocks you down, why your brain is lying to you, how to stop performing and start actually living, and what it looks like to put yourself first without guilt. And she said something I haven't been able to stop thinking about since we recorded. I'll let you hear it in her voice. This is one of those conversations that stays with you. In this episode we explore: Changing your question from why me to why not me. Building a new life in parallel with the one you already have. Why worrying is like a rocking chair — it gives you something to do but doesn't take you anywhere. How to push through the overwhelming parts fifteen minutes at a time. What it means to truly put yourself first. And why you have a 100% track record of overcoming your challenges. Unearthing You: A Guided Garden Visualization
This meditation is for moments when you have drifted a little far from yourself. When life has been full, or hard, or just a lot, and you can't quite remember the last time you felt like you. Rather than trying to fix anything or figure anything out, this practice offers something different: a chance to come back. Through a guided visualization, you will be invited to imagine uncovering something that has always been there, buried beneath the layers of everything you have been carrying. It was never lost. It was just covered. This meditation may be supportive if you are: coming back from a hard stretch or a period of depletion feeling disconnected from yourself without knowing why tired of rebuilding and ready to just find your way back needing something quiet and unhurried In this practice, you will be invited to: settle into your body and let the world slow down follow a gentle visualization into a quiet garden uncover something true about yourself that has been waiting return to the room feeling a little more like you There is no right way to do this meditation. You can sit, lie down, pause, or come back to it later. If your mind wanders, that is not a problem — it is part of the practice. If you would like more grounding practices like this, you can follow the podcast or find me at Grounding with Ruth, where I share meditation, breathwork, and self-worth focused support for women who are ready to stop running from themselves and start coming home. How to Reconnect With Yourself When You Feel Lost
I spent the weekend doing yard work. Not something I would normally describe as meaningful — but we uncovered our backyard walkway that had been buried under grass for five years, and Keith found something hiding underneath that I haven't been able to stop thinking about. Stone feet. Just sitting there the whole time. This episode is about what that made me realize about the work we do on ourselves. Not rebuilding. Not transforming into someone new. Just clearing away what has grown over the top of us until what was always there can finally be seen. It's also about spring, dormancy, and why staying buried can feel safer than being uncovered — even when it's costing us everything. I wrote more about this on the blog this week if you want to go deeper. Read Here Connect with me at groundingwithruth.com or on Instagram and Facebook at Grounding with Ruth.

Make Friends with Your Mistakes — A Guided Self-Compassion Meditation
Last week I sat down with Hilary Momberger Powers and we talked about something that has stayed with me ever since — the idea of making friends with your mistakes. Not excusing them. Not bypassing them. Just meeting them with a little more compassion than we usually do. This meditation is built around that idea. It's about eight minutes. Find a comfortable spot and let's practise together. If you haven't listened to my conversation with Hilary yet, start there — this one pairs well with it. Stay grounded. Making Friends with Your Oopsies: A Conversation with Hilary Momberger Powers
In this episode I sit down with Hilary Momberger Powers, a transformational mentor, motivational speaker, and life coach who has been in recovery since 1983. You may recognise her voice — she was the original voice of Sally Brown in the Peanuts cartoons. Her work now is all about helping women get free from the belief systems and wounds that keep them stuck. We talk about people pleasing as a trauma response, the beliefs we pick up in childhood that we never chose for ourselves, what it actually takes to stop living in your rear view mirror, and why hitting bottom might be the best thing that ever happened to you. This conversation is honest, a little raw, and full of moments I know are going to stay with you. In this episode we explore: How childhood trauma shapes the patterns we carry into adulthood People pleasing as a survival response, not a character flaw The difference between who you are and who you were told to be Using your five senses to come back to yourself when the world feels like too much Why hitting bottom is an invitation, not a verdict Making friends with your mistakes instead of being defined by them Connect with Hilary: Website: hilarymombergerpowers.com Instagram: @hilarymombergerpowers Book a conversation with Hilary: https://api.conversionpro.ai/widget/bookings/hilary-momberger-personal-calendar-li-a6i0fc Connect with Ruth: I am currently figuring out what I want to create next and I want to hear from you before I decide anything. A Meditation for When You're Tired
Sometimes you don't need a long practice. You don't need a transformation. You just need a few minutes of quiet that belong to you. I recorded this episode after a few nights of broken sleep — thunderstorms, a restless body, the usual things that add up. And instead of pushing through and making something elaborate, I made something I would actually want to listen to when I feel like this. This is a short grounding meditation for the tired days. The days when you showed up anyway. If you missed last week's episode about grounding in self-trust when life feels uncertain, I'd start there — this one pairs well with it. Stay grounded. Why You Can't Think Your Way Out of Anxiety
In this solo episode, I get honest about something most of us experience but rarely talk about — knowing exactly what we should do when anxiety or overwhelm hits, and still not being able to make ourselves do it. I share what happened when I tried to logic my way through my own anxiety a couple of weeks ago, why that never works, and what our nervous systems are actually doing when we can't access our tools in the moment. I also talk openly about what it's been like preparing for my workshop — the discomfort of visibility, promoting myself, asking for help — and what I'm doing to stay regulated through it all. In this episode, we explore: What happens in your nervous system when life feels uncertain Why the thinking part of your brain goes offline when you're overwhelmed The four ways we respond when we're dysregulated — fight, flight, freeze, and fawn Why you can't think your way out of a nervous system response Why practicing grounding tools when things are okay is what makes them available when things aren't What I do when my own warning signals show up Links & Resources: Grounding in Self-Trust When Life Feels Uncertain — online workshop, March 14th, 10 AM EST, $37 CAD, replay and resource guide included. Sometimes the most supportive things are also the most overlooked: a real break, a bit of movement, and something warm in your hands. Grounding in Self-Trust When Life Feels Uncertain
This meditation is for moments when uncertainty is making you doubt yourself — when you're second-guessing your decisions, waiting for certainty that isn't coming, or questioning whether you're doing any of this right. Rather than trying to find the answers or force clarity, this practice offers something different: a chance to reconnect to your own inner knowing and trust yourself even when you don't have it all figured out. This meditation may be supportive if you're: stuck in a decision and doubting yourself feeling unmoored by change or uncertainty waiting for external validation before you act carrying the weight of "what if I get this wrong?" In this practice, you'll be invited to: ground in your body and breath notice where uncertainty is blocking your self-trust reconnect to what you know for sure, even if it's small practice trusting yourself not because you have certainty, but because you don't need it There's no right way to do this meditation. You can sit, lie down, pause, come back later, or simply listen. If your mind wanders or doubts creep in, that's not a problem — it's part of the practice. What I’ve Learned After 50 Episodes
In this solo episode, I pause to reflect on reaching 50 episodes of Inspired Questions — how this podcast began, how it’s changed, and how I’ve changed along the way. I talk about recording the very first episode feeling terrified and unsure, learning to trust my voice over time, and letting go of the pressure to get it “right.” I share what showing up imperfectly has taught me about self-worth, authenticity, and creating work that feels aligned. I also speak more openly about my course, The Self-Worth Solution, why it exists, and how it has evolved alongside me. This episode is an invitation to reflect on your own growth, your voice, and what it might look like to choose yourself with more trust and less fear. In this episode, we explore: What it felt like recording the first episode — and how far I’ve come Letting go of performance and learning to trust my voice Why inconsistency doesn’t mean failure How self-worth work shows up in creativity and visibility The evolution of my work and The Self-Worth Solution Why you don’t need certainty to begin Links & Resources: Learn more about The Self-Worth Solution: HERE Book a free assessment call: BOOK HERE Connect with me on Instagram or Facebook: @groundingwithruth Thank you for listening — and for being part of this space. Grounding Meditation: Ten Minutes at a Time
This short meditation is for moments when everything feels like a lot — when your mind is busy and your body is asking for a pause. Rather than trying to fix anything, this practice offers something simpler: a chance to come back to where you are, notice what’s here, and let your system settle. It’s built around the idea of taking things ten minutes at a time, without pressure to solve the whole day. This meditation may be supportive if you’re: feeling anxious or overwhelmed carrying a quiet sense of “never enough” tired of pushing yourself to keep going needing something steady and uncomplicated In this practice, you’ll be invited to: settle into the body and notice support name what’s present without fixing it gently return to the breath and the moment orient toward the next ten minutes, just as they are There’s no right way to do this meditation. You can sit, lie down, pause, come back later, or simply listen. If your mind wanders, that’s not a problem — it’s part of the practice. What Dogs Teach Us About Patience and Progress: A Conversation with Emma Berumen
Dog struggles can feel surprisingly personal — and oddly isolating. In this episode, Ruth sits down with Emma Berumen, the founder behind Snout App (built from her own experience supporting her dog Luna through separation anxiety). They talk about what it’s like when your dog’s stress becomes your stress, why “quick fixes” often leave us feeling worse, and how real progress usually comes from small, repeatable steps… plus a lot of self-forgiveness. This episode is for you if you: love your dog deeply, but feel overwhelmed by behaviour struggles have tried plans that didn’t fit your real life (or your actual dog) notice how easily anxiety becomes a feedback loop — for both of you need a reminder that progress doesn’t require perfection In this conversation, we talk about: why dog ownership can bring up so much self-doubt (and guilt) separation anxiety: the practical stress and the emotional weight the myth of the “quick fix” — and what helps instead breaking change into bite-sized steps (and why 10 minutes matters) repairing after hard moments: apologizing, resetting, trying again building tools that adapt to real life, not ideal circumstances walking, sunlight, and getting out of your own head the reminder: “Even though it may not look like it, it will pass.” Guest: Emma Berumen Emma Berumen is the founder of Snout App, a project inspired by her own dog Luna and their journey with separation anxiety. With a background that includes science and the startup world, Emma is focused on building support that’s practical, flexible, and guided by real expertise — so people don’t feel alone while figuring things out. Guiding Meditation: A Practice of Being Here
This meditation is an invitation to come back to where you are, just as you are. It’s a practice of presence—not as something to achieve or get right, but as something you can return to again and again. Whether your mind feels busy, your body feels tired, or you’re feeling a bit scattered, this space is open to you. There’s no expectation to be calm or clear your thoughts. This is about noticing what’s actually here and allowing that to be enough. This meditation supports you in: Settling into your body and your breath Noticing where your mind naturally goes Practising returning to the present moment Reflecting on what presence feels like for you Remembering that there’s no right way to meditate You don’t need to do this perfectly. If your mind wanders, that’s part of the practice. Every time you notice and come back, you’re already here. Stay grounded.

Grounding Meditation: Presence Over Performance
If you listened to my recent conversation with Anjali, you heard us talk about what happens when we stop performing and start being present. How much energy goes into managing insecurity and trying to be “enough” — and how things shift when we let that go. This 9-minute meditation is about stepping out of performance and into presence. About loosening the grip of the “not good enough” voice and reconnecting with the part of you that doesn’t need to prove anything. In this episode, we’ll: Use breath to settle the nervous system Notice where performance and insecurity live in the body Practice releasing the need to prove or earn worth Explore what presence feels like as a lived experience Remember that your purpose is bigger than your fear You don’t need to do this meditation perfectly. Just find a comfortable position and give yourself these few minutes to be exactly as you are. Presence Over Performance: Finding Your Authentic Voice with Anjali Handa
In this episode, I sit down with leadership coach Anjali Handa to talk about something so many of us struggle with - showing up authentically instead of performing. We dive into the exhausting cycle of editing ourselves, the stories we tell ourselves about not being good enough, and what shifts when we finally give ourselves permission to take up space and be heard. Anjali shares her journey from being a quiet, insecure kid who learned to fly under the radar, to becoming a coach who helps female founders and leaders step into their powerful presence. We talk about the difference between presence and performance, why vulnerability isn't weakness, and how our insecurities keep us from making the impact we're meant to make. This conversation is honest, vulnerable, and deeply validating. If you've ever felt small in a room, edited your voice, or wondered if you're "enough" - this episode is for you. Topics We Discuss: The difference between presence and performance - and why it matters Why we perform instead of being authentic (and what it costs us) The common stories women tell themselves: "I'm not good enough," "I don't belong here," imposter syndrome How childhood experiences shape our adult patterns of hiding and self-editing Why focusing on others instead of ourselves helps us show up more authentically The role of purpose in overcoming insecurity How to catch yourself self-editing and what to do about it Why growth is an ongoing journey (and how to stay light about it) The stark difference between how men and women show up in professional spaces One simple thing you can do today to start reconnecting with your voice About Anjali: Anjali Handa is a leadership coach & trainer and the creator of The Powerful Presence Workshop, helping women feel grounded, visible, and fully themselves any time they speak or lead. With over 15 years’ experience—and five years as a transformational seminar leader—she’s coached more than 1,500 professionals and led programs for hundreds of people, blending leadership development with personal transformation so women can claim their voice and step into their next level of impact. Grounding Meditation: Permission to Struggle
If you listened to my recent conversation with Shulamit Ber Levtov, you heard us talk about something that doesn't get said enough: there's nothing wrong with you when you're struggling. You're having a normal response to systems that weren't designed to support you. This 9-minute meditation is about giving yourself permission to struggle without carrying shame about it. Permission to be exactly where you are, feeling exactly what you're feeling, without needing to fix it or hide it or push through it. In this episode, we'll: Use breath work to settle your nervous system Acknowledge what you're carrying (the shame, the pressure, the expectations) Practice releasing that weight - even just for a few minutes Experience what permission actually feels like in your body Recognize that struggling doesn't make you broken - it makes you human You don't need to be perfect or composed. The Entrepreneur’s Therapist: Caring for Your Mental Health in a Relentless World: Shulamit Ber Levtov
In this enlightening conversation, Ruth sits down with Shulamit Ber Levtov, known as The Entrepreneurs' Therapist, for a deep dive into the critical intersection of mental health and entrepreneurship. This isn't your typical "self-care will fix everything" conversation - it's a raw, honest exploration of why running a business takes such a toll on our mental health, and why that's not actually our fault. Shulamit brings over 30 years of entrepreneurial experience combined with her expertise as a licensed trauma therapist to challenge some of our most deeply held beliefs about struggle, success, and what it means to be "enough." From her groundbreaking work in financial therapy to her revolutionary take on imposter syndrome, this conversation will leave you questioning everything you've been told about personal responsibility and mental health. KEY TOPICS COVERED • Why therapists should be part of every entrepreneur's support team • The mental health crisis in entrepreneurship that nobody talks about • Financial therapy and why mental health professionals score lowest on financial wellness measures • How scarcity triggers trauma responses in the body • The myth of self-care as a cure-all for systemic problems • Why women entrepreneurs face unique societal pressures and role conflicts • The truth about imposter syndrome - it's not about you • Reframing trauma as wounds inflicted on us, not something we "internalized" • Finding strength through spiritual practice and connection to something greater • Why vulnerability is actually a superpower GUEST INFORMATION Shulamit Ber Levtov, MA, RSW, CCTP, is known as The Entrepreneurs' Therapist. She's a licensed trauma therapist, registered social worker, and entrepreneur with over 30 years of business experience. After experiencing her own mental health crisis from running a business, she exited her group practice and dedicated herself to ensuring no other business owner has to go through what she did. Shulamit specialises in supporting women business owners to care for their mental and emotional wellbeing in what she calls "an era of relentless stressors that can make you want to flip your lid on the daily." She's also trained in financial therapy, addressing the emotional aspects of money that are so central to entrepreneurial life. Her unique perspective comes from living both sides - the entrepreneurial rollercoaster and the professional expertise to understand the mental health challenges that come with running a business. Grounding Meditation: Enough as You Are — A Guided Rest from Perfectionism
In this guided meditation, we explore the impossible pressure of showing up at 100% everywhere, all the time - and why that's complete bullshit. If you've been carrying the weight of perfectionism, feeling like whatever you're offering isn't enough, or struggling with the voice that says your worth is tied to your productivity, this meditation is for you. What You'll Experience: A gentle body scan that honours your current capacity instead of trying to fix or change anything Breathwork focused on releasing the performance pressure and guilt about having limits Permission to show up authentically, whatever that looks like today Affirmations to remind you that your worth is inherent, not earned Key Message: You don't have to earn your place here. You don't have to prove your value. You don't have to justify taking up space by being productive every moment. You matter because you exist. Perfect For: Anyone feeling overwhelmed or burnt out People struggling with perfectionism Those dealing with chronic illness or fluctuating energy levels Anyone who needs permission to be human Remember: Showing up authentically - with whatever you've got, wherever you are - is infinitely better than burning yourself out trying to be perfect everywhere. Enough Is Enough: Choosing Rest Over Perfection
In this solo episode, Ruth challenges the impossible standard that we have to show up at 100% in every area of our lives, every day, or we're somehow failing. She shares her personal experience of managing a Crohn's flare while building her business, and how she's learning to redefine what it means to "show up." This episode is for anyone who's exhausted from trying to be perfect everywhere and is ready to embrace a more authentic way of being present in their life. What You'll Learn: Why the "100% everywhere" standard is setting you up for failure How to recognize when you're spreading yourself too thin to be present anywhere The connection between self-worth and your ability to rest without guilt How to show up authentically when you can't show up perfectly Why choosing where to focus your energy isn't giving up - it's being strategic Key Topics Discussed: Managing chronic illness while building a business The difference between showing up authentically vs. performing perfectly Why productivity doesn't equal worth Giving yourself permission to have limits and off days How to honor your capacity instead of ignoring it Episode Mentions: Upcoming interview with Shulamit Ber Levtov (The Entrepreneur's Therapist) - releasing in a couple of weeks Connect with Ruth: Free Resources: Book a Free Enough Assessment Call: https://pages.groundingwithruth.ca/calendar Join The Enough Project (Free Facebook Community): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1226798815277717/ Follow Ruth: Website: https://www.groundingwithruth.com Instagram: @groundingwithruth LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ruth-hirshberg Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groundingwithruth Leave a Review: If this episode resonated with you, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts or your preferred platform. Stop Trying to Be Excellent at Everything
Sometimes doing the bare minimum isn't failing - it's brilliant prioritization. In this episode, I'm getting real about what it means to do the bare minimum when life gets busy, and why that's not only okay, but sometimes the smartest thing you can do. I'm recording this with very little time to spare because most of my energy this week has been focused on preparing for a free workshop, and that's exactly the point. In this episode, we talk about: Why "bare minimum" isn't a bad thing when you do it well The difference between being strategic and being lazy What it looks like to prioritize your energy without guilt How the "never enough" syndrome keeps us from giving ourselves permission to do less Key takeaway: You don't have to be excellent at everything all the time. Sometimes good enough isn't just good enough - it's exactly right. Mini Episode - Change is Coming: Reflecting on Gratefulness and Motivation
Hey guys, welcome to Inspired Questions. I'm your host, Ruth Hirshberg, and today is a mini-episode featuring just me. We are going to talk about the question change that is coming up. I have finished releasing the episodes with the old questions and recorded a few with the new list. Only two questions are leaving us, but they'll come back. It's not that they aren't worthy, but there's so much to cover. For this episode, I want to talk about those two questions, what I've learned from all the wonderful guests, and share the two new questions that are taking their place. I'll also answer them myself. The first question leaving us is, "What is something you are grateful for?" I've learned the importance of gratitude, how it boosts both emotional and physical health, and different ways to practice it. The second question we are saying goodbye to is, "What helps you with motivation and staying consistent?" This one is hard for me. I've learned about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, starting small, finding your why, changing what isn't working, and rewarding yourself. The first new question is, "How have you dealt with times that you failed at something?" I'll share my thoughts on defining failure and the importance of trying. The second new question is, "Do you think you are a perfectionist and how do you deal with this?" I'll discuss my experience with perfectionism and how it has held me back. I'm glad I did this mini-episode and I hope it resonates with you. Please message me or email me if you have any questions, topics, or guest suggestions. Follow me on Instagram @groundingwithruth or visit my website groundingwithruth.com. Like, share, and download to empower more women. Stay grounded, and I'll talk to you in two weeks.
