57. Feeling Behind in Life? Here’s the Truth You Need to Hear
If you’ve ever felt like you’re falling behind, whether it’s in your career, your relationships, your finances, or just life in general, this episode is for you. (Also, trust me, we’ve all been there.)In today’s episode, I’m unpacking the pressures to keep up, the myth of “being behind,” and the sneaky trap of comparison. We chat about focusing on what you actually want to achieve (not your friends, parents, or society) and the reminder that life’s successes and failures are not linear. I get candid about how these feelings have shown up in my own life, from weddings and babies to career pivots and personal growth, and why it’s beautiful that we all bloom at our own pace.I also share a lovely mantra that I discovered that reframes the idea of “falling behind” and instead helps you fall into your own life. 55. Rethinking Life Milestones: Why We Need to Celebrate More
In this episode, we're diving into a topic that deserves more space and recognition: the many different ways to celebrate life’s achievements and successes — beyond the traditional milestones of engagements, weddings, and babies. Inspired by an iconic Sex and the City episode, (yes, the one with Carrie Bradshaw’s stolen Manolos) I’m chatting about the pitfalls of only celebrating “acceptable” or expected life events, and how we can expand milestone moments to be more inclusive for ourselves and loved ones. You’ll hear my take on why it’s time we finally celebrate the big and small wins that don’t always come with showers or registries. I also discuss why life chapters that could be seen as failures or losses need our attention and festivity too (Did someone say divorce party?!). Whether you finally achieved the promotion that you’ve been working towards, the dream trip that’s been at the top of your bucket list, or the clean bill of health you’ve been anxiously awaiting, this episode is your reminder that your life occasions are always worth celebrating!Sex and the City clips:https://www.tiktok.com/@andjustlikematt/video/7276862601873722666https://www.tiktok.com/@e_entertainment/video/7187809327908965678The Golden Girls AgesChicken Tikka Masala recipe videoResources:https://www.milkbooks.com/blog/inspiration/10-important-milestones-to-celebrate/?srsltid=AfmBOoqT87H6e8z94KQxIKf51E1xcmUjpjRGUXG4DULBomEWn1OntANHhttps://www.huffpost.com/entry/milestones-nontraditional_l_651d86b3e4b05c5fe1b75c40https://theconversation.com/its-not-just-weddings-how-celebrating-small-wins-and-unconventional-milestones-can-bring-joy-197755Check out my current favorite items on ShopMyShop my favorite Amazon products here!Connect with Betsy:Visit my website: The Bets LifeFollow me on Instagram: @thebetslife Love the podcast? 51. Talk Good (Not Bad) About Someone: Share Kind Thoughts
We all know the weight of words—how they can lift someone up or drag them down. In this episode, I flip the usual advice of "don’t talk badly about someone" and instead focus on why we should speak about others…kindly. Whether it’s behind their back or (preferably) to their face, we should try to share more of our positive thoughts and compliments. I share personal stories of moments when a simple compliment or comment seemingly shifted someone’s day (and/or confidence), and how being intentional about spreading kindness can create real change. We never truly know what others are going through, and, sometimes, the smallest words of encouragement can make the biggest difference.Want to shop thousands of products shopped and styled by real people? Good news: Fun isn’t just for the kiddos anymore. As we age, it’s easy to view fun as frivolous or unproductive, but in reality, fun experiences are crucial for our health and well-being. 38. Choosing Abundance Over Scarcity Mindset
Have you felt incapacitated by your own thoughts or worries about falling behind? Have you grasped at subpar opportunities due to the irrational fear that nothing better would come your way? Have you experienced anger or envy when friends or coworkers succeeded or advanced? If so, you may have been stuck in a scarcity mindset. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there, but how do we free ourselves from that negative (and unhelpful) way of thinking? With this episode, you’ll discover how to access and revert back to an abundance mindset. Those with an abundance mindset tend to approach life with optimism, resilience, innovation, and gratitude. We can all create more opportunities, collaborations, and solutions by focusing on abundance instead of scarcity. 37. Empowerment Through Expression With Drag Performer Vivian Storm
If you are a Santa Barbara local, you may have spotted Vivian strutting her stuff at a drag brunch or hosting a fun karaoke or bingo night downtown. In this episode, we discuss how Vivian first started performing, how she embodies her drag persona (hint: she channels one of my favorite singers/performers), and the LGBTQIA+ community in Santa Barbara (and the ways that we can all show up and support). Vivian vulnerably shares her joys and challenges and why she focuses on the cheerleaders instead of the haters (as we all should).Vivian Storm was discovered in 2009 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh while obtaining her Masters in Educational Leadership. Taking a chance at completely owning her talents, Vivian entered a college drag show. She quickly fell in love with the art of illusion and performance. By using emotion-filled songs for her empowering performances, Vivian continues to connect with her fans (a.k.a. Storm Chasers). 34. Strategies for Self-Love
We’ve all heard the phrase or been offered the advice to “love yourself more,” but that can be easier said than done. By practicing self-love, you are appreciating your own well-being, worth, and happiness. Like building any muscle, loving yourself takes time and consistency, and it’s something you may have to revisit daily to strengthen. I know that there are days where I have to work a little harder or dig a little deeper to fully love myself. I hope this episode reminds you that self-love isn’t selfish and that prioritizing your self-worth is necessary and healthy. Disclaimer: This episode is for educational and informational purposes and does not substitute for professional medical advice, as I am not a doctor or healthcare provider. If you are seeking medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment always consult a medical provider or healthcare professional. I’m putting all of my cards on the table for today’s episode and sharing openly and honestly what I’ve been experiencing lately. A little over a month ago, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and I have been working through all of the emotions and feelings that have bubbled up with this diagnosis. I discuss my frustrating healthcare experiences, why you need to advocate for yourself, all about what PCOS actually is, my personal symptoms, and how I am managing it currently. I debated recording this very vulnerable episode, but my goal was to help inform and share about PCOS as it impacts 5-10% of women of reproductive ages and is one of the most common causes of female infertility. I hope that it will be helpful to share my story with you all. Thank you so much for an incredible second season of The Bets Life Podcast. I am grateful for all of my listeners and amazing guests. 17. Change is the Only Constant: Are the 30s the Best Years?
I recently read that a woman’s prime years are supposedly between 30 and 39. I’m 33, so I can’t fully attest to this belief yet, but it's made me take a stroll down memory lane to reflect on my 20s vs. 30s (thus far). I believe that every decade has its pros and cons, but I like to think that life only continues to get better with age. In this episode, I discuss the highs and lows of my 20s and how I’ve changed in my 30s (more confident, less insecure, more established in my career, and less concerned with other’s opinions). I also unpack what I consider to be the key word of the 30s: change. I chat about the seasons of life and why it’s okay that everyone is on their own path and moving at their own pace.Even in these alleged best years, it’s also normal to feel sadness along with elation, fear accompanied with comfort, and loneliness mixed with community. Life’s complicated and change can be wonderful but also challenging. Listen to hear why I think an ice cream sundae is a wonderful (and delicious) metaphor for life too.
