From Lemons to Limoncello
by Lisa Marie DeSanto
They say we should make lemonade when life gives us lemons, but I think we can do so much more than that. Adding a little sugar just masks the sour of life, but if we take the time to distill all of the flavors of our experiences—with honesty and empathy—we can completely transform our lives into something as bold and exquisite as a glass of limoncello. I hope you'll join me each week, because the only thing better than creating a great recipe for life is sharing it with friends.

EP 69 - Digital Nomad Truths: Language Gaps. Loneliness. Living Life in the Moment.
What does being a digital nomad really feel like? Stepping into a new country as long-term guest is exciting and fulfilling. It can also be lonely. Why? Well, one challenge can catch travelers off guard—language barriers. Beyond ordering a coffee or asking for directions, language leads to human connection, the kind that turns strangers into friends and everyday interactions into meaningful exchanges. Without it, conversations stay at a surface-level, and really experiencing local culture and human connection ends up feeling just out of reach. In this episode, we talk about:The impact of language gaps on social connections—how not speaking the local tongue can make even simple interactions feel distant and incompleteThe isolation that comes when when you don’t speak the local language—and the challenge of missing out on conversations and forming deeper relationshipsCreative workarounds to bridge the language divide—from Google Translate to nonverbal cues, there ARE ways to connectWhy making the effort matters—the importance of trying, even when you're trying isn't perfect, and how locals often appreciate your willingness to learnWe also talk about: What expat life feels like when you’re not fluent in the local languageStrategies to push past being uncomfortable A fresh perspective on the emotional challenges of travel—why missing out on deeper dialogue is one of the hardest parts of adjusting to life abroadThe truth behind digital nomad life—exploring the less glamorous, often overlooked side of traveling full-timeIf you’ve ever felt the frustration of wanting to say more but not having the words, or wondered what being a digital nomad is really like, or wondered what it's like to be on the outside looking in —this episode is for you. We’ll talk about the unfiltered realities of digital nomad life, fitting in in a new culture, and finding connections beyond words. See you there. EP 67 - Crawling Back to Wellness: When Hustling Hijacks Your Health
We live in a world that glorifies hustling—endless work, constant productivity, putting everyone else’s needs before our own. But what happens when that grind catches up with us? When years of pushing through exhaustion lead to weight gain, lost mobility, and declining physical strength? The slow decline sneaks up—until one day, getting off the floor feels impossible, chronic stress wreaks havoc on our bodies, and exhaustion becomes our default state. Overworking at a desk doesn’t just drain us mentally—it takes a toll on our health, leading to muscle atrophy, joint pain, and a body that just doesn’t feel like it’s on our side anymore. In this episode I get vulnerable, and talk about how I ended up overweight, out of shape, and ready to take my health back. We chat about:How hustle culture—at work, at home, and in daily life—contributes to weight gain and mobility lossThe surprising ways a sedentary lifestyle sneaks up on us—causing muscle weakness, poor circulation, and decreased flexibilityThe emotional burden of losing fitness: frustration, shame, and the fear of starting over when simple, basic movements feel difficultA self-sabotaging mindset we often adopt—avoiding exercise because the reality of how much we've lost is overwhelmingWhy self-care has to be non-negotiable, even when life feels chaotic, and how reclaiming our health starts with small, doable stepsFacing aging, physical discomfort, and the irreversible impacts of prolonged sitting—and what we need to do to minimize long-term damageThe connection between stress, cortisol overload, and sitting too much — and autoimmune conditions, spinal health, and metabolic dysfunctionHow stress, sitting too much, and neglecting movement lead to muscle deterioration, weight gain, and preventable health issuesThe importance of working toward regaining mobility—even if you’ve been stuck in a sedentary cycle for yearsShifting your mindset from survival mode to personal empowerment—so you can finally prioritize your well-beingYour body is your foundation, and it deserves to be cared for. Ever thought about whether our ancestry and culture influence the way we view ourselves, other people, and the country we live in — or the way we interact with the world? They do! And when someone has lived in more than one country—especially if they grew up in one culture and are "adulting" in another—navigating cultural differences can be especially challenging. In this week’s episode of "From Lemons to Limoncello," we talk with Karen Sims, a Doctoral candidate at Georgia State University. In this episode, we talk about: The definition of “third culture kid” The feeling of being an outsider, despite belonging to two or more cultures The differences between individual- and community-oriented societies The varying flavors of sexism from country to country How ancestry and culture can influence individual definitions of the American dream How being from two different cultures can mean feeling homesick for whichever culture you're not currently in Karen's most surprising culture shock after moving to the U.S. How culture evolves The distinction between national pride and nationalism The impact of cross-cultural influences on personal identity We also chat about geographical borders (Are they just human inventions that try [unsuccessfully] to contain culture?) and Karen’s thoughts about making limoncello as a metaphor for life (She’s a food writer, so it’s a good one!) , Don't miss this fascinating discussion with Karen Sims. EP 40 - Breaking Age Barriers: Insights on People over 50, with "Openly Gray"
Are you over 50 years old? If so, do you ever feel invisible in life, at work, or in the media? Do you care about someone over 50? According to the Harvard Business Review, older consumers contribute more than half of consumer spending in the US, yet only 5–10% of marketing budgets are aimed at winning them over. While 46% of the U.S. adult population is age 50-plus, a recent AARP study found that only 15% of online images containing adults include people this age. Feeling overlooked at work, by the opposite sex, and even among younger generations, people 50 and up are also often ignored by brands. Openly Gray wants to change that. In this episode, we chat with the dynamic team from Openly Gray, a marketing firm specializing in the often-overlooked 50 and up age demographic. Our guests are: Lee Brody, Co-Founder/President Lee St. James, Co-Founder/Creative Director Brooke Stachyra, Partner/Client Success Each of these entrepreneurial spirits saw an opportunity to help businesses tap into this market, which, according to AARP, is responsible for more than half of consumer spending in the United States alone. By the very nature of what they do, they’re also changing society’s perceptions. And since this age group is living longer and working longer, their work is crucial to the way people in this age group are seen and valued. In This Episode, We Cover: Why businesses should market their products to the 50+ population The importance of combating misperceptions about any age group The value that older employees bring to organizations The amazing exchange that can happen when younger employees and older employees mentor each other Misperceptions about the potential people have in their 50s and beyond What it feels like to be undervalued when we have so much expertise to offer in the workplace How hiring younger/less experienced employees may save companies up front, but costs them more in the long run Why painting with a broad brush/making assumptions about ANY age group, young or old, hurts society and businesses Advice for people under 50 on why they should change their perceptions about people over 50 Whether you ARE over 50, you care about someone who is, or you're a business that's curious about this untapped market - this episode is for you. EP 36 - Beyond the Mirror: Unlocking Confidence Through Self-Care - with Rhoda Johnson
We all want to feel confident in our own skin, don’t we? To express ourselves freely, to feel good in the clothes we wear, and to walk into a room and own it with confidence. But that’s easier said than done when the images we’re bombarded with daily don’t reflect who we are or what we look like. In today’s episode, we’re diving into a topic that affects so many of us: the way we feel about the way we look — and how that feeling impacts the way we show up in the world. Whether it’s due to unrealistic media standards, personal insecurities, past criticisms from others, or societal pressures, there are countless reasons why people struggle with their self-image. That struggle doesn’t just affect how we see ourselves in the mirror; it can also limit our self-expression and confidence, which further impacts our personal and professional lives. But what if there was a way to break free from those limitations? We all know people who defy media standards and radiate confidence and personal expression wherever they are. Where does this confidence come from? And is it something we can all tap into? Today’s guest, Rhoda Johnson, says we can. Rhoda Johnson isn’t just any Image Brand Strategist—she’s Hollywood-trained, with a résumé that reads like a who’s who of celebrity clients, from Stevie Wonder to Nikki Taylor, from Joe Theismann to Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe, daughter of Bishop Desmond Tutu. What makes Rhoda’s approach unique is her belief that true confidence doesn’t start with a makeover or a new wardrobe. It starts with self-care and a bit of neuroscience. Her mission goes beyond appearances; she’s on a journey to help people reclaim their confidence as a birthright. I had the pleasure of meeting Rhoda a few months ago at a business conference and, let me tell you, her positive energy is contagious. She’s a brand image consultant, a makeup artist and jewelry designer, and the powerhouse behind Rhoda Design Group, and she’s here to share how we can all find unshakeable confidence within ourselves. I’m thrilled to bring you this heartwarming and inspiring conversation with Rhoda Johnson. EP 34 - Practicing Gratitude: Rewriting your life, with Julia Christine
Today we’re diving deep into a topic that changes lives: practicing gratitude. I know, I know - everyone talks about it, but before you think you know where this is going, trust me, we’re taking the conversation to a deeper level. In this episode, I’m joined by the inspiring Julia Christine, an intuitive healer who has a gift for grounding people while helping them reach their fullest potential. She’s not just a guest; she’s someone who helped me navigate through a particularly tough time earlier this year, and I can’t wait to introduce you to her. What We Cover: Gratitude Beyond the Surface: we break down what it truly means to practice gratitude. Spoiler alert: it’s so much more than jotting down what you’re thankful for in a journal (a meaningful practice, but we dive deeper into getting really clear on the things you want, being grateful when things aren't going your way, and why it's important to know “why” you’re grateful). We also get into the nitty-gritty of why gratitude is essential not just for the good times, but especially during life’s rough patches. Our Personal Journeys: Both Julia and I have faced some serious challenges in our lives—moments that could have broken us. But instead of letting those experiences define us, we leaned into gratitude. We share our stories, not to dwell on the past, but to show you just how transformative gratitude can be. From tragedy and despair to finding meaning and hope, our journeys are proof that gratitude has the power to change your life. Julia’s 17-Second Morning Routine: Julia reveals her must-do morning routine that takes just 17 seconds, but sets the tone for her entire day. It’s simple, powerful, and something you can easily incorporate into your own life. Toxic Positivity vs. True Gratitude: We explore the fine line between toxic positivity and genuinely positive, proactive approaches to living. Is It Magic or Science? Whether you believe in the mystical side of gratitude or see it through a scientific perspective, the truth is—practicing gratitude works. We discuss how it invites more positive outcomes into your life, regardless of how you view it. A Cautionary Note: We delve into some heavy topics, including Julia’s past experience with suicidal thoughts before she found her way out of that darkness. If this is something that could be triggering for you, please prioritize your self-care and feel free to skip this episode. I’ll look for you here next week for another empowering conversation. EP 33 - Sunday Shot Series: Self-Connection - The Strength in Being Vulnerable
Hey there, my friends. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been taking a close look at all of the things we need to build strong self-connections. We talked about accepting ourselves—even the parts we’re not so proud of. We unpacked the difference between being selfish and self-full, so we can get past the guilt and realize that self-love is a good thing. We talked about trusting ourselves to handle anything life throws at us and forgiving ourselves for the things we did in the past, when our choices were limited or we didn’t know any better. Today, in our last episode of this “Sunday Shot Series on Self-Connection,” we’re talking about the foundation that holds all of that self-acceptance, self-love, self-trust, and self-forgiveness together: vulnerability. Strength vs. Avoidance In this episode, we talk about the difference between being strong and being stubborn—between facing our insecurities and avoiding them—between moving through our pain and skirting around it. Because at the end of the day, when we avoid vulnerability, we keep ourselves prisoner to the things that hurt us in the past. And that stops us from healing ourselves, finding happiness, and connecting with ourselves and other people. Vulnerability IS strength A lot of people assume that vulnerability is a sign of weakness. But the truth is, strength isn’t about being tough. It doesn’t come from avoiding things, like our past pain or current insecurities. Strength comes from moving through our challenges and processing them. It comes from being brave enough to face our demons and shortcomings with grace and honesty. That can only happen when we let ourselves be vulnerable—and we can only be vulnerable if we have the kind of courage to go on that kind of self-development journey. And so, as we wrap up this “September Sunday Shot Series on Self-Connection,” I hope you’ll tune in to this final episode, where we give vulnerability the credit that it’s due: being vulnerable isn’t weakness; it’s our greatest strength. This episode is a Sunday Shot: a short and sweet solo episode with a runtime of approximately 10 - 20 minutes. EP 32 Sunday Shot Series: Self-Connection - Building Self-Trust to Connect with Your True Self
Welcome back to the September Sunday Shot series! This week, we're exploring the link between self-trust and self-connection. Have you ever found yourself stuck at a crossroads, second-guessing every decision, big or small? What about standing at the edge of an opportunity that you just can’t seem to step into? So many of us struggle with trusting our own instincts or abilities, and it keeps us from moving toward the things that matter to us. It also puts up stubborn barriers against us getting fully connected with ourselves. In this episode, we take a look at why trusting ourselves is a key part of getting self-connected, and how a lack of self-trust can keep us stuck in our tracks, unable to move forward and claim the parts of us that make us who we are. We'll talk about the barriers that stop us from trusting ourselves—fear of failure, reliance on others' opinions, and the inability to set personal boundaries—and how these can all lead to disconnection from our true selves. I’ll share personal stories and insights about why it's essential to build self-trust, not just when it comes to making decisions but also for getting aligned with our authentic values and the things we want most out of life. We'll also talk about some practical ways you can start building self-trust today. This episode is a Sunday Shot: a short and sweet solo episode with a runtime of approximately 10 - 20 minutes. EP 31 - Sunday Shot Series: Self-Connection - Forgiving Ourselves & Releasing Regret
In this episode of my "Sunday Shot Series on Self-Connection," we’re taking a look at regret – because sometimes the hardest person to forgive is ourselves. We'll talk through the sometimes painful but always transformative journey of self-forgiveness, but also how regrets can end up being the reasons for our growth and development. We’ll also dig into why forgiving ourselves is essential for emotional healing, letting go of the past, and moving forward. We'll cover: The role of regret in personal growth Practical steps to start forgiving yourself, from writing letters and finding symbolic gestures to making amends Forgiving previous versions of yourself, who were less experienced and made the best choices they could at the time, so you can grow and move forward If you’ve been struggling with regret or finding it hard to forgive yourself for past decisions, this episode is for you. We’ll cover words of encouragement and insights you can take action on as you start your own journey toward healing and self-compassion. Join me for a helpful conversation on reclaiming your “now” by letting go of the past. This episode is a Sunday Shot: a short and sweet solo episode with a runtime of approximately 10 - 20 minutes. EP 30 - Sunday Shot Series: Self-Connection - Love Yourself by Valuing "You" (10 Ways to Do It!)
This episode of From Lemons to Limoncello is part of my September Sunday Shot series on the most important relationship we have — the one with ourselves. Last week, we talked about accepting all the parts of who you are, from the things you love to the things you’re working on. This week, we’re chatting about the many ways you can show yourself love by valuing yourself and practicing self-care. But I'm not just talking about bubble baths and massages — I'm talking about deeper practices with a bigger impact that feed your soul, protect your well-being, and foster your inner peace. If you’ve ever struggled to understand what you need and deserve in life or found yourself settling for less — less “you" time, less respect, less joy — this episode is for you. Key Takeaways: Self-Love is THE Foundation for Fulfillment: Until you love yourself, it’s hard to define and pursue the things you genuinely want and deserve in life, relationships, and your future. Self-Love Habits: Whether valuing yourself is a new new concept, it feels completely awkward or selfish, or you could use a few ways to reignite your love affair with yourself, you'll get some practical advice on how to start being more self-full. Self-Love Benefits Your Relationships: Loving yourself ends up improving your relationships with the people around you - and with your life. We'll talk about why. Showing yourself love should never be a one-off event that's saved for weekends and special occasions; it’s a practice. The 10 suggestions I share in today’s episode might be small steps but they have a big impact on building a foundation of self-care that honors your worth. By valuing yourself and making these practices part of your daily routine, you won't just cultivate a deeper connection with yourself — you’ll also create a life that's filled with more joy, peace, and fulfillment. So tune in, take notes, and start embracing the love and value that’s already in you. See you there. Cheers! EP 29 - Sunday Shot Series: Self Connection - Accepting All the Parts of Who You Are
In this special September series of "From Lemons to Limoncello," we're taking a look at the most important relationship you'll ever have—the one with yourself. As a writer, corporate storyteller, and mindset mentor, I've always believed that meaningful connections are the foundation of a fulfilling life. So this month, we're switching up our usual mix of solo episodes and interviews to do a Sunday Shot-only series on getting better connected with ourselves. In this episode, we explore the transformative power of self-acceptance and how it plays a crucial role in personal growth and breaking unhealthy cycles. We'll discuss why accepting your flaws is just as important as embracing your strengths and how true self-love involves honoring every part of your journey—especially the messy, unpolished bits. We talk about the struggle between self-acceptance and wanting to change, and how these two can actually work hand in hand. We’ll unpack why it’s okay to not have all the answers, why vulnerability is a strength, and why you don’t need to be perfect to be lovable or worthy. Key takeaways include: The importance of self-acceptance in breaking negative cycles. How to forgive yourself for past mistakes and celebrate personal growth. Understanding that real love—from yourself and other people—embraces all of who you are. The difference between healthy self-improvement and harmful self-criticism. If you're on a journey of self-discovery, struggling with insecurities, or just want to deepen your self-connection, this episode is for you. Tune in so we can turn your lemons into limoncello together. This episode is a Sunday Shot: a short and sweet solo episode with a runtime of approximately 10 - 20 minutes. EP 28 - Finding Strength in Every Step: Kim Builta’s journey to defy cancer’s limitations and thrive
Kim Builta hadn't thought about her battle with stage 3B cancer for years, when she was blindsided by a cancer diagnosis for both her father and her husband on the same day — and the news that her own cancer had metastasized. After losing her father, her husband, AND her hip, it would have been understandable for Kim to give in and give up. Instead, she leaned into her faith; learned to use her leg, despite new limitations in movement; and lifted herself over the emotional and physical hurdles that life had thrown at her. In this episode, we chat about battling life-threatening illness, the power of taking small steps when a problem seems overwhelming, and the importance of surrounding yourself with a community of good people. We also talk about honoring the memory of loved ones we've lost by following our curiosity, treating ourselves to adventures, and finding things as often as we can that remind us that life is meant to be lived. EP 27 - Learning to Trust Again: Balancing self-protection & vulnerability after getting hurt (Sunday Shot)
Let’s face it, it's painful when the people we’re supposed to be able to trust end up hurting us instead. When that betrayal comes from family, friends, or coworkers, it’s especially shocking. Still, we can be so hard on ourselves that we’ll blame ourselves for not seeing it coming. Our first instincts? To shut down completely, build internal walls so high and thick that no one can ever get near us, and to never trust anyone again. But here’s the thing: That approach may solve one problem, but it usually ends up causing us more pain in the long run. So how do we learn to trust people again — and ourselves — after we’ve been hurt so badly? In this episode, we talk about licking our wounds when someone’s betrayed us, building your trust muscle after you’ve been hurt, and finding a balance between protecting ourselves and staying open to all the amazing relationships meant for our lives — the ones we already have and the new ones that are just waiting to find us. *This episode is a Sunday Shot: a short and sweet solo episode with a runtime of approximately 10 - 20 minutes. EP 26 - Finding Balance and Living in the Moment: Falling in love with your life, with John Fico
Have you ever wondered what it's like to be an actor? Or maybe wanted to be one? In this episode, I talk with my friend, actor and student of the human experience, John Fico about this and so much more. John is an exceptional actor, but he’s also a truly mindful and kind human being who's mastered something we all struggle with: finding a balance between meeting our responsibilities and still loving our day-to-day existence. In this funny and candid chat, we talk about that balance, stereotypes around acting as a profession, and the two really important things non-actors can learn from performers. He also proves that falling in love with your life is like going on vacation every single day. John has appeared on screen in such recognizable series as Law and Order and Inventing Anna; on stages in London, Edinburgh and New York City; and he's toured the United States playing a variety of roles in both plays and musicals. More About John: Visit John’s website to view his demos, resume, and bio. View John’s IMDb profile to see his film credits. John's Bio: John Fico stars in the solo short film Democracy Sucks by Off-Broadway playwright Monica Bauer, which has won ten film festival awards and was recorded and produced entirely by remote with director John D. FitzGibbon during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. John has also won the 2017 Planet Connections Theatre Festivity Award for "Outstanding Featured Actor in a Comedy" for his role in Anne Rank In The Gaza Strip after several years of festival engagements in Made for Each Other (NYC: East-to-Edinburgh, EAT’s One Man Talking, United Solo, Left Out, Planet Connections 2010 [Nominated: Outstanding Actor in a Solo Show], Edinburgh Fringe, Orlando Fringe, Boulder Fringe, Tucson Solo) both also written by Monica Bauer. Notable NYC credits: As I Lay Dying (Live Source) A. R. Gurney’s Screen Play (Flea Theater), Iron Curtain (Prospect Theatre, Off Broadway), The Most Ridiculous Thing You Ever Hoid (2010 NYMF winner Outstanding Ensemble Performance), A Stoop On Orchard Street (Mazur Theater), The Higher Education Of Khalid Amir (2008 MITF, Nominated Outstanding Supporting Actor), Pink Elephants - The Musical (Slipper Room), & several editions of Sticky! EP 25 - Redefining Success: Breaking society’s mold and setting your own standards (Sunday Shot)
We all want to be successful in life, but what does that mean, really? Is it always about money and fame? Do all cultures define success the same way? Should I have to sacrifice things to be considered successful and, if the answer is yes, does my definition of success need to change? In this solo episode — a super-short Sunday Shot — I share my thoughts on these questions — and an alternative to the type of lifestyle society says we should be working for if we want to be considered "successful." After you tune in, I’d love to hear from you: What’s your definition of success? Do you need to make adjustments? EP 24 - Chasing Success & Finding Misery: Stepping off the corporate ladder, with Paula Schuster
What happens when you succeed in your career — when you have all the things society says are supposed to make you happy — but, instead, you find yourself feeling unfulfilled, uneasy, and UNhappy? Paula Schuster had it all: She'd worked her way up to a leadership position at a multinational financial services company. She was respected, making great money, and was even being eyed for a promotion. She was living a personal life that was worthy of a successful executive, too, complete with all of the material things that come with the position. She was also completely miserable. Success didn't bring Paula the happiness she thought she'd feel; instead, it left her feeling stressed, anxious, unhappy and unfulfilled. Tied down by her financial obligations and the life she'd built for herself, she couldn't' see any way out of her predicament — until a trip with a friend changed everything. In fact, it had changed her completely. In this episode, we talk about Paula's amazing transformation from a high-power, high-stress corporate career into the world of wellness and personal development. We also talk about: The time it takes to reset our nervous systems after burnout and/or working in toxic office settings Having the courage to let go of the things that no longer serve us Being ok with not having all the answers — and taking a leap of faith anyway Truly understanding the importance of living in the now — right now Why we're better humans when we're following what makes us happy instead of following a paycheck The importance of trusting your intuition More about Paula: Paula Schuster spent over 25 years in a corporate positions, leading organizations and developing and optimizing business strategies, models and processes. Today, she’s a mother, a wife, a Reiki master and a transformational coach who helps clients cultivate self-love, believe in themselves, uncover their life purpose, and embrace their authentic selves, while reconnecting with their intuition. EP 23 - Happiness Takes Vacations: When sadness knocks on your door, let it in (Sunday Shot)
When we’re sad, it’s so tempting to shut down and protect ourselves against more pain. Or we might want to feel better so badly that we’ll try to distract ourselves, numb our feelings, and avoid the sadness altogether. In my experience, both of these responses only lead to more heartache. In this episode we talk about sadness as a teacher in our lives and why it plays such an important role in helping us become better versions of ourselves in the long run. After listening, I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences about dealing with sadness: Has sadness taught you anything? Has it redirected your life in positive ways in the long run? How have you found a balance between sitting with your sadness and not wallowing in it? ABOUT THIS SHOW
They say we should make lemonade when life gives us lemons, but I think we can do so much more than that.
