052 Why Saying THE Heart Attack vs MY Heart Attack Matters
Reclaiming Your Life Story: Why “A Heart Attack” or “The Heart Attack” Matters More Than “My Heart Attack”. The words we use to describe a health event can influence how we cope, heal, and view ourselves. In this episode, I explore why saying “a heart attack” or “the heart attack” instead of “my heart attack” can empower recovery, reduce fear, and help you reclaim your story. You’ll learn practical tips for shifting language, distancing yourself from illness labels, and building emotional resilience.Key Takeaways:Language shapes perception: using “a heart attack” or “the cardiac arrest” creates distance from the event.Linguistic distancing can lower anxiety, depression, and fatigue.Small shifts in self-talk and conversation with others can support emotional recovery. This principle applies to other conditions too, from migraines to cancer to depression.Reclaiming your narrative is an ongoing, intentional practice.Resources & Links:PNAS study on linguistic distancingPeople-first language in healthcareJoin my Heartie Support communityRead the complete article here Podcast & Blog Page.Getting to know Sallie CrawleySurvivorship after a heart attack or cardiac surgery can be challenging. 045 Self Care After a Cardiac Event isn't Selfish
Me, Myself, and I, today I tackle the myth that self-care is selfish and learn why it's actually an essential practice for our well-being after a heart attack or cardiac surgery. I use the powerful analogy of the airplane oxygen mask to understand why we must take care of ourselves first before we can effectively help others.I also dive into the transformative power of mindset, sharing a personal journey from self-criticism to self-love. Learn how changing your thoughts can lead to lasting changes in your habits and overall happiness when living with heart disease.Key Takeaways and Mindset Shifts:Self-care is not selfish: It's a fundamental practice to ensure your own health - mentally, physically, and emotionally so you can better support the people in your life.Embrace your imperfections: Learn to love the things you can't change about yourself. A simple affirmation like "I like myself, I like myself, I really, really love myself" can make a big difference.Find an activity you truly love: Ditch the pressure to do what others are doing. Discover a physical activity that motivates and inspires you, making it a sustainable part of your life.Stop "dieting": Shift your thinking from restrictive diets to making healthy, lifelong food choices. Focus on your habitual diet rather than temporary fixes.Everything in moderation, including moderation: Give yourself grace and permission to enjoy life's pleasures without guilt.Read the complete article here Podcast & Blog Page.Getting to know Sallie CrawleySurvivorship after a heart attack or cardiac surgery can be challenging. 039 Mindset and Cardiac Rehabilitation, Is There a Connection?
I challenge the notion that "you can't think yourself better" after a life-altering cardiac event. While it's crucial to acknowledge the trauma and negative emotions, we delve into the powerful connection between your mindset and your cardiac recovery. We explore:The Nuance of Positive Thinking: It's not about being relentlessly positive, but understanding how your thoughts influence your feelings, actions, and behaviours. The Thought-Action Link: How a negative thought can derail your plans (like a rainy day stopping a walk) and how a shift in perspective can lead to positive actions.Changing Your Mindset Through Repetition: The simple yet powerful concept that consistently choosing a positive outlook can reshape your thinking, even in the face of trauma.Practical Steps for a Positive Outlook: Recognising Triggers: Identifying when negative thoughts arise Reframing Thoughts: Actively choosing a positive interpretation (e.g., viewing an appointment as proactive care).Empowering Lifestyle Changes: Approaching diet and exercise with a positive mindset, seeing them as fuel and enjoyment, not deprivation or insurmountable tasks.Seeking Support: The importance of asking for help for habits like smoking cessation.I offer encouragement and practical strategies for cultivating a positive mental attitude, empowering you to make sustainable lifestyle changes and reduce your cardiac risk factors.Key Takeaways:Your mindset impacts your cardiac recovery and ability to make healthy lifestyle changes. It's okay to feel negative emotions, but don't let them dictate your actions.Changing your mindset is possible through consistent, positive reframing of thoughts.Small, positive choices (like reframing an appointment or starting a short walk) can lead to significant improvements.Positive mental attitude fuels positive actions, which in turn supports better heart health.Resources Mentioned:Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder vs Post-Traumatic GrowthHow to Help Yourself When Feeling Emotional After a Cardiac EventRead the complete article here Podcast & Blog Page.Getting to know Sallie CrawleySurvivorship after a heart attack or cardiac surgery can be challenging. 038 Relax - I Cope With Uncertainty (20 minutes)
Today I’ve been thinking about how much energy we spend trying to predict, control or prepare for every possible outcome in life… especially when we’re living with a health condition. It’s completely natural, we want certainty because it feels safe. And when your body isn’t behaving predictably, or when your health is uncertain, it’s easy to feel like the ground beneath you is shifting. Even the smallest decisions can feel overwhelming. Will I feel well enough today? What will the test results say? How do I plan when I don’t know how I’ll feel? The truth is… we all live with uncertainty. But when you’re managing a health challenge, that uncertainty often takes centre stage. And that can leave you feeling anxious, helpless, even disconnected from who you used to be.That’s why this relaxamation is so powerful.“I Cope with Uncertainty” is designed to help you gently reconnect with your inner strength. To soothe the nervous system. To remind your mind and body that peace is still possible, even in the unknown. It’s not about ignoring reality. It’s about learning how to stay steady within it. This relaxamation won’t give you all the answers. But it will help you soften your grip on needing them.Do not listen to this episode while driving or operating machinery. 032 Relax - Today Is My Day (13 minutes)
Today’s episode is a relaxamation and it focuses on taking time for yourself and putting yourself first. When was the last time you spent a whole day just for yourself, doing only what you wanted to do when you wanted to do it? I don’t do it very often myself and yet I know that I should. It’s an essential part of self-care. Self-care shouldn’t be for when you’re burnt out, uptight, stressed and feeling awful it should be used as part of your everyday life to avoid feeling depleted and unable to cope. If you have others that you care for or look after then you need to look after yourself first. Think of the oxygen mask on the plane, always put it on yourself first else you won’t be able to save others and may even make the situation worse. Life should be enjoyable as our mental health impacts our physical health; do you know what brings you joy? Maybe a bit of homework for you 😉Time is something we can’t make more of but we can make more money, have more relationships or more jobs, and find some time for yourself. Live with gratitude for all the experiences you have, if you can’t give yourself a day, then look for an hour or maybe an afternoon. Be glad you did rather than wish that you had!Do not listen to this episode while driving or operating machinery.Your affirmationsToday is my dayI set aside time to laugh and playI spend time doing what I loveSay your affirmations 5 times each as a set. Repeat your set of affirmations at least once a day. The more you use them the bigger the impact. Add them to a habit that you do every day. While cleaning your teeth, driving, running, walking your dog, washing the dishes, when you first wake up or the last thing at night. Your self-reflection questions are:What is one new thing I want to try today? How can slowing down help me to stop wasting time? What can children teach me about enjoying life? What do I enjoy doing, having, and being?Use these reflection questions to delve a little deeper and get to know yourself better. You can use them as prompts for journaling, during meditation or just give yourself a few moments of time to consider.Read the complete article here Podcast & Blog Page.Getting to know Sallie CrawleySurvivorship after a heart attack or cardiac surgery can be challenging. I am not sure about you but does your cardiac event consume your life? Is your heart health at the centre of everything that you do or think? Awe is an emotion characterised by a sense of reverence or wonder in response to something perceived as vast or great. Something outside of yourself. It has been shown to have several potential health benefits. Today I am going to talk about awe as it has been shown to have a positive impact on both psychological and physical health, making it an important aspect of well-being after a heart attack or heart surgery.Read the complete article here Podcast & Blog Page.Getting to know Sallie CrawleySurvivorship after a heart attack or cardiac surgery can be challenging. 030 Relax - I Am In Charge of How I Feel (13 minutes)
The Dalai Lama said, “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” To me, the quote means that experiencing pain, physical and emotional, is a natural and unavoidable part of life, but whether or not we experience suffering as a result of that pain is a choice that we can make. In other words, we can choose to let the pain control and consume us, causing suffering, or we can choose to accept the pain and manage it in a healthy and constructive way.Managing how we feel and react to people, circumstances, and situations can reduce our suffering. You are in charge of how you feel. I’m sure you are familiar with the term, “You choose how you react”. Actually, it’s not 100% true as our limbic system is always on the lookout for trouble and anything that would be a threat so you may initially experience a fight or flight response. However, you can stop, take a breath or two, and calmly reconsider your response, there may be some facts you weren’t aware of, and therefore take charge of how you feel. Do not listen to this episode while driving or operating machinery.Your affirmations:I am in charge of how I feelI choose thoughts that give me control of how I feelI decide how I want to feelSay your affirmations 5 times each as a set. Repeat your set of affirmations at least once a day. The more you use them the bigger the impact. Add them to a habit that you do every day. While cleaning your teeth, driving, running, walking your dog, washing the dishes, when you first wake up, or the last thing at night. Your self-reflection questions are:In what situations do my emotions work against me? When I lose control of my emotions, what happens? How would my life be changed if I had more control over my emotions?Use these reflection questions to delve a little deeper and get to know yourself better. You can use them as prompts for journaling, during meditation or just give yourself a few moments of time to consider.Read the complete article here Podcast & Blog Page.Getting to know Sallie CrawleySurvivorship after a heart attack or cardiac surgery can be challenging. 028 Journey of Survival and Resilience with Jon Johnston
My interview with Jon Johnston. He’s a survivor of a widow maker heart attack and a cardiac arrest that caused him to be without oxygen for 20 minutes, technically dead. He is also an author of two books and a sports website owner. Today he talks to me about his life before his event and how he died but miraculously survived. He shares with me how he pieced together what had happened with the help of family and friends along with his realisation that he was not the only person affected. His heart attack impacted his family and friends in ways that he didn’t expect. Due to oxygen deprivation Jon now lives with a traumatic brain injury and yet during his recovery, he has penned two books to help himself and others with their own recovery. We talk about how Jon lives his life happy and has ambitions for the future despite the change to his life, health, and knowledge that he will never be the person he once was. We talk about Jon’s books and he shares some content with us. 027 Finding Your Sweet Spot (Cardiac Diet) with Cheryl Strachan
This week is about nutrition, and my guest is Cheryl Strachan of Sweet Spot Nutrition. She is a Registered Dietitian, specialising in cardiac nutrition and wellness. Her mission is to share her love for food that hits the sweet spot. She is also the author of a recipe book. It's called 30-Minute Heart Healthy Cookbook: Delicious Recipes for Easy, Low-Sodium Meals. Cheryl believes that we should focus on eating for health gain, because in the long run, weight loss diets don’t work for most people. Please note that since we recorded this episode, alcohol recommendations have become quite a bit more conservative, due to more recent studies that link alcohol to cancer and heart disease even at relatively low levels. (In Canada the new guidelines say low-risk drinking is 0-2 per week, moderate risk is 3-6 per week, and the risk goes up from there.😳)Today we talk about involvement in cardiac rehab in Calgary and how she developed her model the sweet spot. We have a great discussion about moderation, and what it actually means in real life. We chat about how what you eat can help reduce fatigue and talk about mood foods. If you want to hear her thoughts on chocolate, coffee, and wine, then stay tuned. How to reach Cheryl: https://sweetspotnutrition.ca/Free Book, The Sweet Spot Guide to Eating Well with Heart Concerns: https://sweetspotnutrition.ca/eating-well-with-heart-concerns/Why not join Cheryl in the Sweet Spot Kitchen: https://sweetspotnutrition.ca/join-us-in-the-sweet-spot-kitchen. 026 Cardiac Fiction Egregious Fortune By Aaron David
Today’s episode is going to be rather different; it’s going to be a fictional story. It’s a story of someone that had a heart attack although it is founded in a true story. It’s the first fictional story that I have found about having a cardiac event and I’d like to share it with you. I came across the author, Aaron David in a Facebook group when I was looking for people to proofread and give me feedback on my book ‘The Beat Goes On’, a how-to support yourself emotionally and practically guide for once you were discharged from hospital. Aaron agreed, he then told me he was a published author – this nearly gave me my second heart attack as I was then nervous about what he might say. He was amazing and really helped get it just right. In the meantime, I thought I would check out his work and found that he was the author of numerous books of short humorous fiction stories and poems. When I read his book of short stories “Booky McBookface” I came across this story that I would like to share with you today. It reminded me of how we never know what is just around the corner and how quickly things can change. Stories can be more than just fictional, they can be metaphors for life. I use them a lot in my hypnotherapy scripts they allow clients to apply their meaning and make the changes they desire. It's not me or Aaron who is going to read the story but another hearty, Tony Richens-Smith. Tony is also a published author he also wrote “Not Everyone Wants a Hug” seeing the world through the eyes of a dog. After his widow-maker during covid he wrote his second book “My B****** Heart”, his personal journey after his heart attack. It was when I was listening to his audio book version, I thought I’d ask him to record this for me. So now without any further ado, I will hand you over to Tony and the Egregious (uh·gree·juhs) Fortune.Aaron's WebsiteAaron's Amazon Authors Page for BooksTony's Website Tony's Amazon Authors Page for Books Read the complete article here Podcast & Blog Page.Getting to know Sallie CrawleySurvivorship after a heart attack or cardiac surgery can be challenging. 025 Relax - I Am Whole, Healthy & Complete
Quit hiding your magic! You are UNIQUE, you are the only one like you. You have one of a kind fingerprints, not even identical twins have matching ones. You are the outcome of one egg and around 40 million sperm, any other sperm and you would be a different you. You are the only one to see colours the way you do. Remember not to compare yourself with others as there is no comparison. And anyway, you would be matching their outsides (what you see) with your insides (with what you think and feel). The same goes for our health and our life in general. Even if we are feeling broken, we can live with health issues but still be healthy in mind and body. We can still live our lives happy. 023 Relax - Forgiveness Is A Gift
For a full understanding of what my relaxamations are make sure you catch up with my episode called Relaxamations to relax and energise when living with heart disease, you can read or listen to me explaining it. In a nutshell, though, relaxamations are a blend of all of the best bits of meditation, guided relaxation, mindfulness and positive affirmations. Imagine this: If you had $86,400 in an account and someone stole $10 from you, would you be upset and throw all of the remaining $86,390 away in hopes of getting back at the person who took your $10? Or move on and live? Right, move on and live. See, we have 86,400 seconds each day. Don’t let someone’s negative 10 seconds ruin the remaining 86,390. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Life is bigger than that. (unknown)Do not listen to this episode while driving or operating machinery.Carrying resentment is holding on to negative energy. It is also a bit like taking poison and hoping the other person will die.Forgiving the other doesn’t mean they were right or you were wrong. It empowers you and disempowers them. You can also forgive yourself. Here are your affirmations from today’s relaxamation:Forgiveness is a gift I give to myself. Forgiveness is a way of showing strength in myself.By forgiving others, I become free of the past.Say your affirmations 5 times each as a set. Repeat your set of affirmations at least once a day. The more you use them the bigger the impact. Add them to a habit that you do every day. While cleaning your teeth, driving, running, walking your dog, washing the dishes, when you first wake up or the last thing at night.Your self-reflection questions are:Whom do I need to forgive? What would I gain by forgiving that person? Can I let go of my negative feelings about that person?Use these reflection questions to delve a little deeper and get to know yourself better. 014 Cardiac Chat with Brian Simpson – The Heart Attack Thriver, how having a heart attack changed his life for the better
Brian suffered a massive heart attack at the age of 48. Prior to that he was exceptionally healthy and lived a very active life. His heart attack occurred during an Ice Hockey match and he spent 20-25 minutes on his own in the dark unable to move. Did he see the light? Despite there being a number of factors that seemed to make the situation difficult, he was lucky in so many ways including having paramedics having a Tim Hortons coffee (it’s famous in Canada). He’s lucky to be alive as they were so close. He describes his experience in the Cath Lab, his opportunity to take part in a pilot and his magnificent cardiac recovery – his heart health before the heart attack gave him the edge in recovery. After suffering a life-changing heart attack over 4 years ago, he set out to change how I was showing up in the world. He left a 25-year marriage, his job in a big pharmaceutical company and travelled extensively on his motorcycle through Canada, the USA and Central America searching for his purpose in life and ultimately happiness. Brian shares with us his acceptance of abuse as a young child. How it created anger, guilt and shame. A secret and pain that he stuffed down into his broken heart. Meditation was and still is a key element in helping Brian manage stress and heal his heart. Brian believes that stress is one of the main contributors to his heart attack and likely to be behind many other people’s heart health diagnosis. Hear about his chance meeting with a Monk at an airport and the life-changing circumstances that followed. Then later his journey to India plays an important part in his life, and how he now focuses on helping other people through meditation and mindset coaching. He explains how much he has changed as a person; his friends say he is unrecognisable from the man he was before. Not physically as he is as fit and healthy as he was before but emotionally, how he chooses to be in this life. He admits to being a recovering negative talker. This is a fascinating interview, and suggest you stop and listen to what Brian has to say. He is ‘The Heart Attack Thriver’ and he has a checklist too. 013 Cardiac Chat Sara Bushnell - Having a heart attack in a work meeting far from home and an important discovery
Sara was fit, healthy and ate a good diet. She had been experiencing regular headaches and stress, at one point thought her blood pressure machine must have been broken. Living in Bristol, she left for a meeting in London, had an early telephone meeting at the station. Then she went on to her business meeting that was the reason for travelling. She has a sense of dread, and indigestions, but didn’t want to draw attention to herself. She continued all day until the end of the meeting when a friend mentioned she didn’t look too well at all. She was taken to hospital but they really didn’t think she was a candidate for a heart attack so they were focused on bringing her blood pressure down which was sky high at that time. Sara was indeed having a heart attack caused by a blood clot. She was in disbelief, how could she be having a heart attack she has two young children. At first, she was so poorly that the distance from home didn’t matter but as time passed and she felt better she missed her partner and children. It was the first time she had been away from them and was grateful to the technology that allowed her to normalise what was happening for her young family. Sara sees her heart attack as being quite fortuitous as whilst she did have an angioplasty, she didn’t have any stents but they did find she had a bicuspid valve. She feels lucky that this was found while she was young as she can keep herself healthy and fit with exercise along with managing her stress levels. If it hadn’t been found until later in her life her prognosis might be different. Going back to work can be complicated and worrying, Sara tells me how it was for her and what she found difficult. We talk about how at first Sara was feeling okay during her recovery but how some 6 months later she is finding things a little more difficult emotionally and has experienced bouts of tears. She gives her tips and tricks about how she stays happy and buoyant, and interestingly it includes her favourite shot glass. She also talks about a book she found published by the British Heart Foundation, and how it helped her explain her heart attack to her children. Make sure you listen to find out more.
