More Movement Please
by Famous Ashley Grant
I walked into my first Zumba class and lasted 15 minutes before I had to leave because I couldn't breathe. I couldn't do a single jumping jack. I couldn't hold a plank. I was using 5-pound dumbbells and calling them my "big weights."That was August 2023. Today? 400+ group fitness classes. 26 pounds down. I'm using 15-pound dumbbells, taking multiple classes in a day, and chasing those 20-pounders that keep haunting me from across the weight rack.I'm Famous Ashley Grant, and More Movement Please is my fitness podcast — a digital diary from a woman over 40 who got tired of wishing she was stronger and finally did something about it. I record most of these episodes in my car on the way to and from the gym, so they're quick (5-10 minutes), honest, and easy to binge. Think of me as your workout buddy who keeps it real. This show is part accountability, part education, part inspiration. I talk about beginner fitness tips, gym motivation, what to do when you sleep throu

Less Movement, Please? Wait, WHAT?!?
Three hundred plus days of pretty much daily movement, and the More Movement Please girl is about to say something you probably did not expect: less movement, please. Well…sort of. I just got back from a seven-day trip, got dressed to go to Tabata, made it as far as the doorway before getting sick, and finally had to admit out loud what my body has been screaming for weeks. In this episode, I'm sharing the new four-week experiment I just announced on Instagram (three gym days instead of five, with yoga, walking, hiking, and stretching filling the other four), the head colds and cycle issues that have been piling up despite being healthier than I've ever been, and the very real fear of being judged that almost kept me quiet about all of this. If you're white-knuckling a fitness routine that is quietly wearing you down, this one is for you. Spoiler: pulling back is not quitting.Want to share your story or give feedback on the show? Waterfalls, Wet Rocks, and What Terrain Actually Does to Your Body
How does a 0.6-mile hike eat up a full hour and leave your quads screaming? Because terrain is everything, and I learned that the hard way over seven days of waterfall hikes from Kentucky to Florida and back. In this episode, I'm breaking down why hiking twelve miles on uneven ground hits harder than walking twenty miles flat, why downhill is secretly more brutal than uphill (looking at you, eccentric quad load), and the sliced pinkie I picked up at Tallulah Gorge that taught me to keep my hands free. I'm also sharing the non-scale victory I did not see coming: my husband asking me to slow down for once. Plus, the food and water recap I promised, including how splitting every dinner saved us money and calories, why packing one prepped meal for the road is a move I'll make every trip, and what we drank, ate, and refilled obsessively for seven days straight. Vacation does not have to mean pausing your movement. Here's proof.Want to share your story or give feedback on the show? Real Talk on Weights, the Scale, and What a Full Week of Working Out Actually Looks Like
She lifted the 20-pound dumbbells and didn't die...and that's just one of the wins Ashley is unpacking in this listener Q&A. From what a real week of workouts looks like after 280+ days of consistency to her honest, complicated relationship with the scale, this episode gets into the stuff people actually want to know. Ashley talks non-scale victories (including a wedding ring that hadn't fit in a decade), why she dialed back from 22 hours of exercise a week to 13, what the people in her life think about how much she works out, and what she'd tell anyone who keeps saying they'll start on Monday. A Letter to the Version of Me Who Was Afraid to Start
Two years ago, Ashley was terrified to walk back into a gym and convinced that dieting was the only option. Now, 280-plus days into her fitness commitment, she's "writing a letter" to that version of herself and it might be exactly what you need to hear today. From lifting 3-pound dumbbells to reaching for the 20s, she gets honest about the pain, the cravings, the moments she wanted to quit, and why she's so glad she didn't. If you've been waiting for the right moment to start moving, this episode is that moment. Have you worked out today?Want to share your story or give feedback on the show? Drop It, Keep It, Add It: A Trainer's No-Guilt Approach to Eating Better
What if eating better wasn't about cutting everything you love, but about knowing what to drop, what to keep, and what to add? Personal trainer and lifelong bodybuilder Virginia Kinkel shares her Drop Keep Add framework, and it might be the most realistic nutrition approach you've ever heard.Virginia breaks down how women over 40 can build muscle, reduce fat, and eat in a way that actually fits their real life, not some idealized version of it. Ashley reacts in real time, fresh off a week of way too many sweets and some unsolicited commentary from people in her life about what she should and shouldn't be eating. This episode is equal parts practical and personal, covering the 80/20 principle, strength training for women over 40, why deprivation backfires, and why giving yourself grace is not the same as giving up. If you've ever felt guilty for eating like a human, this one's for you.Want to share your story or give feedback on the show? Stop Making Excuses and Start Making Appointments With Yourself
You had the wrong outfit. You ate too big of a breakfast. You woke up five minutes late. Sound familiar? If you have ever talked yourself out of a workout with reasons that wouldn't hold up under any real scrutiny, this episode is going to hit close to home.Ashley gets real about the mental gymnastics she used to do to avoid the gym and how she completely flipped the script. Now she blocks her workout classes in her calendar like client appointments because, for her, that is exactly what they are. Forget the Scale: Why Celebrating Small Wins Is the Secret to Staying Consistent
Painting your toenails used to be a workout. Now it's just... the average Monday. That's a milestone worth celebrating, and Ashley Grant is here to tell you why tracking wins that have nothing to do with the scale might be the thing that actually keeps you moving. In this episode, Ashley gets real about being a self-described pessimist who is actively learning to flip the script, and why that mindset shift has been the secret weapon behind 270+ days and 550+ workouts. She talks about the moments that don't show up on any fitness app but hit differently anyway, like getting up a flight of stairs without stopping, or reaching your feet without a whole production. If you've been waiting for permission to celebrate how far you've come (or to just get started), this is it. Your body is stronger than you think. But These Shoes! Finding the Right Workout Shoes for Low Impact Cardio, Zumba, and Everyday Wear
If you've ever screamed "I want those shoes!" at your screen, you already understand the energy of this episode. Ashley Grant is on a full-blown mission to find the perfect workout shoes for low impact cardio, Tabata, and everyday wear, and spoiler alert: the most expensive pair she's ever bought lasted exactly twenty minutes before she had to rip them off mid-class.In this episode of More Movement Please, Ashley breaks down her search for the right fitness footwear, including what finally worked for Zumba (hint: sliding matters), what didn't work for low impact cardio (looking at you, Brooks Glycerin 23), and why finding the right shoe is actually a bigger deal than most people realize when you're serious about moving your body more. Whether you swear by Hokas, Ryka, Brooks, or something else entirely, Ashley wants to hear what's on your feet and why. Because the right gear matters, and your feet deserve better than holes in the soles. Also - this episode was partially inspired by that silly 2007 YouTube video by Liam Kyle Sullivan. It was a music video for his song "Shoes", performed as Kelly, and Wikipedia says it was one of the platform's first ever viral videos. Wait, Is HIIT Just a Marketing Label? What Fitness Buzzwords Actually Mean
That class you've been scared to try might not be as intense as its name suggests, and that "easy" walk might be doing more for you than you think. Fitness expert Annie Landry breaks down what HIIT and LISS actually mean from an exercise science standpoint (hint: the fitness industry has been a little loose with those definitions), and why women over thirty-five specifically may want to stop chasing intensity every single day. Ashley also gets real about her own active recovery days and why pairing high and low intensity movement might be the smartest thing you can do for your body. In this quick but honest episode, Ashley opens up about a rough mental health week and why showing up at fifty percent still counts, why a ten-minute walk is a legitimate win, and why the pressure to go all out is one of the biggest reasons people quit before they even get started. If you've ever talked yourself out of moving because you didn't have the energy to give it everything, this one is for you. Stop Waiting to Feel Motivated: Why Action Comes First
If you've been waiting to feel motivated before you start working out, you might be waiting forever. Yoga teacher, podcast producer, and psychology-backed wellness expert Jamie Brooke breaks down why motivation is actually the result of taking action, not the starting point, and what that means for anyone who keeps pushing their workout to "next Monday."In this episode, Jamie shares the science-backed concept from Atomic Habits that flips the motivation myth on its head, a real-life example of a retired, kid-free woman who still can't seem to get to the gym, and the one question you should ask yourself instead of "do I feel like it today?" Host Ashley Grant also gets real about how waiting for motivation would have kept her stuck as the girl who couldn't make it through 15 minutes of Zumba. If you've ever talked yourself out of a workout before you even started, this episode is for you. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. This Fitness Instructor Can Tell in 60 Seconds If You're Going to Quit
Fourteen years of watching people walk through a gym door has given Rhonda Goode an almost unsettling ability to read a new student before the music even starts, and in this episode, she tells you exactly what she sees. This is the final installment of our Podcasthon series, and it might be the most important one.Rhonda breaks down what separates the people who completely transform their lives from the ones who stay stuck in the same place year after year, and the answer is simpler and more uncomfortable than most people want to hear. She gets into why you cannot out-exercise a week of sitting, what the Netflix and binge lifestyle is actually costing your body, whether you can really outwork a bad diet, and what she would say right now to the person who knows something has to change but hasn't made the move yet.She also shares what it feels like when a student sends her a photo from the top of a mountain and says her class made the hike easy. This episode wraps up our spotlight on the Humane Society Animal League for Life of Madison County, Kentucky, as part of Podcasthon 2026. 14 Years at the Front of the Room: What a Real Fitness Instructor Actually Sees
If you have ever wondered what your fitness instructor is actually thinking when they scan the room, Rhonda Goode is about to tell you. In this episode, she pulls back the curtain on fourteen years of watching the fitness industry from the inside, and she has opinions. We get into the single biggest mistake she sees instructors make that costs them student loyalty, why she intentionally shows up five to seven minutes late to every class, what she can read from your body language before the music even starts, and why she does not waste time on people who are just there to check a box. She also weighs in on where the fitness industry is headed, what she thinks about the explosion of online certifications, and the one piece of advice she would give any new instructor before they step in front of their first class. Fair warning: she is not gentle about any of it.This is part two of three special episodes recorded as part of Podcasthon 2026, a global initiative where thousands of podcasts spotlight a charity of their choice. She Never Planned to Teach. Then the Room Filled Up and the Mirrors Fogged Over.
Rhonda Goode did not set out to become a fitness instructor. She set out to find someone who could kill her in a workout class, and when both of those instructors quit at the same time, she picked up the music and just went. What followed was fourteen years of packed rooms, fogged mirrors, pool classes that exploded out of nowhere, and a teaching style built entirely on refusing to stop moving. In this episode, Rhonda walks us through the full origin story: the chaotic Zumba sub that started it all, the Berea College classes that grew from two loyal students to sixty-five people crammed six inches from the front mirror, the YMCA in Richmond that became her home base, and how a woman who freely admits she is not a people person ended up being the person hundreds of people refuse to miss a chance to work out with. This is part one of three special episodes recorded as part of Podcasthon 2026, a global initiative where thousands of podcasts shine a spotlight on a charity of their choice. Is Your Workout Actually Working Against You? A Nurse Practitioner's Take on Strength, Recovery, and Training Smarter
A nurse practitioner who specializes in integrative medicine just made the case that strength training is literally medicine...not a bonus, not a nice-to-have, medicine. In this episode, Ashley shares a powerful voice note from Stephanie Baubie, NP, who breaks down why muscle mass is one of the strongest predictors of how well we age, and why the "more is always better" mentality could be quietly sabotaging your results.Stephanie covers the science behind strength training for long-term health, why overtraining spikes cortisol and works against muscle recovery, and what women in their forties specifically need to know as hormones shift during perimenopause. Ashley also gets refreshingly honest about her own training habits, clocking in at 10 to 16 hours of exercise per week, and what this episode made her rethink. The Truth About Fad Diets, Fitness Goals, and Why There's No Finish Line
What if the biggest thing holding you back in fitness isn't your body, but it's what you believe? In this Q&A episode of More Movement Please, Ashley gets raw and reflective answering listener questions she didn't see coming. She revisits the moment she walked out of her very first Zumba class after 15 minutes, what she wishes she'd told herself that day, and the one piece of advice from her instructor she ignored...and knows now she shouldn't have. Aging Is Not the Problem. Inactivity Is.
The number one fear people over 60 have isn't death. It's needing help. In this episode, certified health coach and personal trainer Dean Walters of Aging Boldly breaks down why movement is the single most important thing you can do for your body as you age, and why you don't need to become a gym person to do it.After 30, we all start losing muscle and power if we don't actively fight for it. And for older adults, that loss isn't about how you look. It's about whether you can get off the floor, catch yourself on a curb, carry groceries, or play with your grandkids. Dean shares the three big reasons movement matters most: independence, resilience, and better health markers across the board.Ashley also gets personal about a recent fall that could have been much worse if she hadn't been consistently moving her body. I'm Losing Weight But I Still Don't Love My Body (Here's What I'm Doing About It)
Dropping pant sizes doesn't automatically fix how you see yourself in the mirror. In this raw Valentine's Day recording, Ashley gets honest about why she still sees her formerly fat self staring back at her, even as her body gets stronger and smaller. She opens up about the unexpected link between getting physically fit and finally being able to face the mental and emotional baggage she'd been hiding from for years. If you've ever felt like your confidence hasn't caught up with your progress, this one's for you. The 10,000 Steps Scam: How a Marketing Campaign Became Fitness "Fact"
Think you need 10,000 steps a day to be healthy? That magic number actually came from a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing campaign and was never based on science. Dr. Melissa McDowell reveals the real step count you need based on current research: 7,500 steps if you're over 60, or 8,500 steps if you're under 60. Yep! Both significantly lower than the 10,000-step target you've been chasing. Ashley breaks down how this myth became fitness gospel and what you should do with the extra time you just got back (hint: strength training twice a week). Plus, she shares her relief at finally returning to in-person group fitness after 11 days snowed in and why this revelation makes her question every piece of fitness advice she's ever received. If you're tired of chasing arbitrary fitness goals, this episode will free you to train smarter, not longer. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. I Slept Through My Alarm | Why Missing One Workout Doesn't Mean You Failed
Slept through your alarm? Feeling guilty about missing a workout? You'll learn the difference between self-care rest and self-sabotage, how to listen to what your body actually needs, and why one missed workout doesn't erase all your progress. This episode tackles the all-or-nothing thinking that derails so many fitness journeys. Missing a workout doesn't make you a failure. What matters is showing up consistently over time, not being perfect every single day.If you've ever felt like missing one workout means you've "blown it," if you struggle with fitness guilt, or if you need permission to be human while staying committed to your goals, this vulnerable check-in will help you reframe how you think about consistency. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. Too Busy With Kids to Work Out? How to Get Your Whole Family Moving Together
"I'd love to work out but I have kids" or "My partner isn't into fitness" are two of the most common excuses I hear. What if your family wasn't an obstacle to fitness, but actually part of the solution? This episode tackles the real challenge of staying active when you have a family. Whether you have young children, a partner who hates the gym, or conflicting schedules that make solo workouts impossible, there are practical ways to incorporate movement into family life without fighting your reality.I share how my husband and I solved this: I do Zumba while he plays pickleball at the same facility. Win-win. You'll get specific ideas for different family situations: dance parties for young kids, obstacle courses in the backyard, family walks after dinner, active video games with time limits, weekend hikes for older kids, bike rides together, trying new sports as a family. The key is meeting people where they are. Don't drag your partner to spin class if they hate it. Find activities they actually enjoy. Make movement feel less like "working out" and more like quality time or play. Movement doesn't have to look like traditional exercise to count.Perfect for parents struggling to find workout time, couples with different fitness interests, or anyone who thinks family responsibilities mean sacrificing health. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. ABOUT THIS SHOW
I walked into my first Zumba class and lasted 15 minutes before I had to leave because I couldn't breathe.
