Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy

Jokes and the Gym is where dumbbells meet dumb jokes. Hosted by comedian, certified personal trainer, and brain tumor survivor Rudy Tyburczy, this show dives into the messy overlap of comedy, health, and resilience. Each week, Rudy chats with comedians, creatives, and other people in his life about late nights, weird gigs, fitness fails, and finding balance when life throws curveballs. You’ll also hear solo episodes with updates from his ongoing brain surgery journey, reflections on recovery, and plenty of ridiculous stories along the way. Expect laughs, honesty, and maybe even the push you need to lace up your sneakers. Think stand-up comedy with a side of lunges—your brain, your body, and your funny bone will thank you.

JATG 123 - The "Got To Get To" Shift

In this episode, I talk about a simple mindset shift I picked up from Hidden Brain - moving from “got to” to “get to.” It’s nothing revolutionary, but it’s been hitting me in a real way lately. Instead of dragging myself through obligations, I’m trying to see them as opportunities - whether that’s mowing the lawn, training clients, working on my comedy, or prepping for my Tumor Humor show on May 22nd at the Eugene Art House.I get into how this shift helps me stay more present, find more joy in the process, and even approach things I don’t love (like social media) with a little more purpose - especially when it’s tied to something bigger than me. I also share a couple stories from the week, including randomly spotting my 83-year-old client in the crowd at a show, and talk about how this mindset is shaping my comedy and how I show up in life. It’s not about pretending everything’s amazing - it’s about finding those small “get to” moments wherever you can.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. JATG 122 - My Current Workout - Plan and Approach

In this episode, I talk about where I’m at with my workouts after brain surgery and how my approach to fitness has shifted. I’m focusing less on going all-out and more on consistency, feeling good, and building something sustainable—three days a week, full-body, and keeping it simple. I also share how I structure my workouts, why the six main movement patterns matter, and how you can make fitness work for your life instead of taking it over. Plus a quick update on Tumor Humor and the fundraiser I’m putting together for the National Brain Tumor Society.Check out the link if you feel like donating to the National Brain Tumor Society during May - Brain Tumor Awareness Month. https://nbtsevents.braintumor.org/fundraiser/7236611Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. JATG 121 - Be Flexible!

In this episode I talk about a few ways to look at how flexibility rather than perfection is what allows for greater consistency in comedy, workouts, and life. Rather than quitting or not doing anything, asking what you can do in a different manner and focusing on maintaining patterns rather than producing perfect routines might help you move to where you want to be. JATG 116 - Why Do You Exercise?

Why do you work out?In this episode of Jokes and the Gym, I’m thinking about motivation - what actually gets people moving and keeps them coming back. As a personal trainer, I see it all the time: people show up not wanting to work out, and by the end they’re saying, “I didn’t really want to come in today, but I’m really glad I did.”I talk about the different reasons people exercise - internal drive, social connection, training for a goal, or simply wanting to feel better. For me, movement has always helped “keep my head on straight,” and I believe my decades of strength training played a big role in helping me recover from my brain tumor ordeal last year.I also share a quick update about my upcoming Tumor Humor show at the Eugene Art House on May 22.“Food, movement, and rest — those are the big three.”Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. On this episode, I give you permission to NOT WORK OUT! It's okay. You can do it (or not!)! But just, like, do it most of the time you're planning to. There's a lot of great reasons to workout, and there are some legitimate reasons to not work out also. If it's one of those reasons, or you just need a break  feel free to not work out. JATG 110 - Working Out on Low Energy Days

Episode 110 is about how I approach low-energy workout days in real time. After a less than stellar night of sleep, I talk through why it’s okay to skip a workout if it’s not going to add to your life, and how, when you do move, it doesn’t have to be intense to be worthwhile. I share why I’m choosing to work out with a friend, focus on movement over load, and keep the session shorter and more intentional, with the goal of feeling more alive rather than more drained. The episode reflects a bigger shift I’m making around energy, capacity, and letting go of all-or-nothing thinking - whether that means doing a lighter workout, going for a walk, or simply giving myself 20 minutes to do something that fills my bucket instead of emptying it.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. JATG 109 - How to Create a Workout for (almost) Anyone!

In this episode, I break down how I would build one simple strength-training workout that works for most people - no bodybuilding goals, no heroic suffering, no gym intimidation required. Just a simple outline coming from a personal trainer who wants to help people move and feel better.Using the six basic movement patterns (push, pull, carry, squat, hinge, lunge), I let you know how to choose a few exercises, keep the reps reasonable, and train in a way that supports your body and your brain. I also ask AI to create a beginner workout and explain why consistency, form, and “helpful not impressive” effort matter more than lifting heavy. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the gym, burned out by fitness culture, or unsure where to start, this episode offers a calm, realistic approach to getting stronger - one that fits into real life.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. JATG 108 - Takin It Easy

In this episode I talk about who I am, what I savor, recovery, capacity, and learning to do less after a brain tumor and seizure shifted my relationship to work, comedy, and stress. This episode is about nervous system care, changing relationships with the things you love, and finding small ways to rest and refill in a burned-out world. Don't expect a bunch of specific tips or whatever, but more of an exploration of what doing less can look like. JATG 107 - Time to Start Strength Training!

This week, I’m talking about strength training - not from a research-heavy, “optimize everything” angle, but from a personal one.You can look up the physiological benefits anywhere. Smarter people than me have that covered. Instead, I share three simple reasons I keep coming back to lifting weights:It’s empowering. Strength training is a direct way to do things with your body—move better, feel stronger, or work toward how you want to look or feel. You want to move that thing? This helps.Mental clarity, space, and mood. No matter what I’m dealing with mentally or emotionally, lifting helps. I always feel better afterward - physically and mentally. Every time.Sleep. I’ve had lifelong challenges with sleep, and strength training consistently helps me sleep better. Better sleep makes everything else easier. To close the episode, I also give a quick review of Is This Thing On?, a film partly about stand-up comedy that also touches on marriage, mid-life crisis, and identity. Thanks for stopping by this week! In this episode I talk about one way to approach setting the tone for the new year, and why using Marty Supreme as an example may or may not be the best way to move forward. Instead of goals and specifics, I talk about the benefits of choosing a single word or phrase to use a guiding light for the year ahead, and recognizing the inherent costs of choosing any word. Happy New Year!Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. JATG 105 - Goals That Don't Make You Hate Life

In this episode I'm talking about setting process-based goals instead of outcome goals. That is, instead of things like, "I'm gonna lose 50 pounds!", we can help ourselves more by incorporating process goals into our day to day. So like, "I'm gonna go for a walk after lunch 4-6 days a week" or "I'm gonna lift weights two or three times a week" is much more likely to help you stay on track. I share gratitude for listeners, guests, and the YMCA community, plus a simple health-first workflow that got me back to the gym. Ep. 99 - Creating Comedy (and Health) Together - Myq Kaplan on Rini

In Ep. 99, I catch up with comedian Myq Kaplan about making his new special, Rini, and how collaborating with his partner shifted his process from “just get the laugh” to “get the truth and the laugh.” We trace that evolution from Edinburgh reps and Rini’s note-taking to their “blooming → pruning → harvest” workflow, plus how shared ideas (and producer credits) actually happen in a real relationship. We also talk health and how that looks for him as a comedian in the Big Apple: Myq’s Manhattan walk-everywhere lifestyle, High Line laps, the Oura ring’s sleep traps, and practical tweaks like front-loading water and not letting wearable stats override how you actually feel. He shares release details (Blonde Medicine’s YouTube, live premiere Nov 19, 8pm ET) and I note this was my first interview post-brain surgery—good to be back talking with a friend about jokes, truth, and recovery.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. Ep. 98 - Myq Kaplan is about to release a special! Rini!

In this episode, I’m joined once again by the delightful Myq Kaplan to talk about his new special “Rini” (out November 19 on the Blonde Medicine YouTube channel), his year of creative growth, and what he’s learned from diving into acting with his partner Rini. We get into how acting became less “mystical” and more playful, how exercises like switching emotional choices cracked things open, and how those tools feed back into stand-up. From there we zoom out into the philosophy of comedy: process over product, finding joy in the “now show” (not just the 20 minutes on stage), treating life and art as verbs instead of fixed nouns, and choosing curiosity and kindness over cheap aggression - onstage and off. Along the way my cat stops by, we talk Le Guin, Hitchhiker’s Guide, musicality in jokes, and the idea that everything’s been said.Find his upcoming special, "Rini" here! >>> https://youtu.be/y0uf9i_z-Aw?si=-5zkc2w_xlcTkxrgWork with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. I’m back on stage and back in rhythm. Halloween cover show on Friday, Double Entendre on Saturday—two months running as freestyle champ—and my first 30-minute walk since brain surgery. I share how beta blockers changed the feel of performing, why I might add freestyle to my act, my fast-approaching return to personal training at the Y, and a big 2026 goal: developing Tumor Humor for Edinburgh Fringe. PLUS! Ep. 96 - Back On Stage, Gray Week, and 9 Hours of SLEEP!

This week, I’m talking about what it feels like to get back into comedy after brain surgery and an ablation, Brain Tumor Awareness Week, and how I’m feeling about returning to work soon. I did two shows this weekend — one for a cancer benefit and another at Bleepin’ Funny — and they both went great…except for the part where an entire table of women walked out mid-set (don’t worry, there’s a clip).I also share a few updates about my recovery — the weird silent migraines after my ablation, learning to prioritize sleep (I got nine hours last night, baby!), and finding gratitude for healthcare, humor, and slow progress. Plus, I touch on the Blazers, some books and movies I’ve been into, and what’s next for Jokes and the Gym as I move toward a new format built around three segments: a joke, a gym, and a something else. Two more shows coming up this week — a Halloween show at Lucky’s and Double Entendre at Fathoms — so it feels good to be back out there doing what I love.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. Ep. 95 - Ablation, Books, Blazers, and TV Shows

Hey friends, it’s Rudy. This week marks one week since my heart ablation, and I’m happy to say I haven’t had an AFib episode since. I talk about what the procedure was like, some hospital stuff, and how it feels to finally give myself permission to slow down without guilt. But what I lack in heart chaos, I make up for in a rather chaotic episode: ablation, books, tv shows, and a Portland Trail Blazer/western conference NBA season preview.I’ve also been deep into some really good books - It’s Not You by Dr. Ramani Durvasula (on recovering from narcissistic abuse), which I finished and talk about some of what I've learned from it. How To Make Your Brain Your Best Friend by Dr. Rachel Barr is next up. Loved what I've read so far. If you haven't checked out either of these doctors' work online, give them a follow on the gram or youtube - they both rock. Then I share a few shows that made my recovery a little easier: TASK (absolutely blew me away), Alien Earth, and Peacemaker. Plus, I get way too into my Blazers predictions for the 2025–26 season — spoiler: 41 wins, play-in berth, and Toumani for All-Defense again. And I close with some exciting news — I’m back on stage! Catch me at:10/24 – Gryff’s Pub (Cancer Benefit “F*** Cancer”)10/25 – Sam Bond’s (Bleepin Funny Halloween Show) 10/31 – Luckey’s (Comedy Cover/Swap Show) 11/1 – Fathom’s (Double Entendre – defending my freestyle crown!)Thanks for sticking with me through a wild year of tumors, heart flutters, and hospital visits. I saw One Battle After Another twice (empty house vs packed crowd) and it hit harder on rewatch. Ep. 93 - Rapping, Myq, and Movies

I’m back with a weekend of bars and big screens. I start off with reflections and a clip or two from the freestyle round I won at Double Entendre (shoutout Lexy for keeping Eugene’s scene lively), and yes—my mom and her friends sat front row at a very dirty show where one of them yelled something that would otherwise be inappropriate to yell in public, which became one of my three freestyle words. I share a teaser from my new chat with Myq Kaplan about Rini, the special he co-wrote with his partner, Rini. Then it’s movie time: Joe List’s Tom Dustin doc and the Key West club story, Anemone with Daniel Day-Lewis, a There Will Be Blood rewatch, and why One Battle After Another might be peak PTA—not just recency bias. Quick health check before next week’s ablation, plus show dates: 10/12 Eugene Art House, 10/25 Sam Bond’s (5pm, free), 10/31 Lucky’s, and 11/1 back at Fathoms (under Pegasus on campus) where I return as freestyle champ for another Double Entendre.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. JATG Goes to the Movies - (Not) HIM

In this bonus mini-episode, I celebrated being cleared to drive again post brain surgery by treating myself to a $5 Tuesday showing of Him. There were only three of us in the theater, and honestly, I can see why. The movie was a strange, muddled football-horror mashup that never quite came together.I talk about why it didn’t work for me—the random football scenes, the lack of story until the final act, and the lead’s tiny little brain scar (which I couldn’t help comparing to my own 12-inch post-surgery horseshoe MONSTER scar). I also riff a bit on why Jordan Peele’s producer credit isn't nearly the same as having him in the director’s chair, and what horror movies I’m actually looking forward to, like the upcoming Good Boy.If you’re a horror freak or just a movie weirdo like me, you might still get a kick out of Him. For most people, though, I probably wouldn’t recommend it. Still, I love going to the movies—even for the weird ones—and I’ll keep doing these little reviews because it’s fun to share what I see.Overall, I rate HIM as one out of three 2-point conversions.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. I talk about how hoodie weather, football season, and a steady diet of alien shows are helping me appreciate the little things. While I've been going to more appointments than shows, I also talk about doing my first comedy set since surgery - just 17 days after getting my head sliced open! I bookend with some surprises, starting with those that my cats have brought me, and ending with the pleasant surprise of being nominated for Best Comedian in Eugene, which brings a deep sense of appreciation. It's filled with updates, gratitude, and a reminder to hold things gently while finding new ways forward. Ep. 88 - 3 Nights in the Hospital

This episode goes deep into the three nights I spent in the hospital throughout the experience of my craniotomy. I talk about getting there at 5:30AM, surgery at 8 (what I remember of it), my 8 hours waiting for an ICU room (and the barf bags that came with it), one night in the ICU, my racy initial interaction with my OT, and two nights in my room on the neuro floor. Overall, I had a good experience, and I'm thankful to have received such comprehensive and coordinated care throughout my time at Riverbend. I'm also still recovering, so you'll probably notice some more ums and ahs and pauses throughout. This recovery thing is a lifelong process now, and I'm glad to be able to share it with people and see how I continue to grow and improve as I get back on my feet. Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. Ep. 87 - 12 Days After Brain Surgery Quick Check In

I hopped on the mic for a short check-in—my first episode since coming home from brain surgery. I talk about the scar, my 21 head staples, my wobbly sleep schedule, and share some of what recovery has looked like almost two weeks out. I share updates from my surgeon, my PA Tom (not to be confused with Tommy the Tumor), and the pathology report (grade 2 astrocytoma), plus a bit about what’s next with follow-ups and care.I also thank my mom, friends, and everyone who’s supported me through the hospital and at home—it’s meant a ton. Looking ahead, I’ll keep mixing in solo episodes, interviews, and even some movie reviews while I heal. And for locals: I’m on a show Saturday August 30th @5pm at Sam Bond’s Garage in Eugene, where I’ll be busting out new jokes, and the producer Leigh Anne asked me if I would feel comfortable being the recipient of the funds they raise - each month goes to a different cause - guess I'm the cause this month! Ep. 86 - A Letter to My Future Self - Tommy Gets 86'd!

Episode 86 – “A Letter to My Future Self” was recorded in the two days leading up to my brain surgery — the one where Tommy the Tumor finally gets 86’d. I look back on the long road to diagnosis, from years of strange symptoms and a missed MRI to finally learning that Tommy had been squatting in my right frontal lobe for who knows how long.I share Jeff’s legendary “table story” from our Korean comedy days, when the mic went out and I laid down on the bar to finish my set, and how it mirrors lying down on the surgery table now. I play voice messages from my friend Sonny Side of Best Ever Food Review Show — part roast, part life lesson — and talk about what it’s like to go through an MRI and fMRI with Jules the tech, Fleetwood Mac MRI remixes, and the hardest challenge of all: trying not to think about anything. There’s gratitude for the gifts, cards, and kindness from friends, family, and the Eugene community, along with some thoughts on advocacy, resilience, and the importance of genuine bedside manner. It all builds to my improvised letter to future Rudy — a mix of humor, hope, and reminders to prioritize health, relationships, and joy… and to keep the cats out of the surgical incision.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. Ep. 85 - The Birthday Bingo Brain Tumor Bash - Backyard Live Episode!!

For my 42nd birthday, I turned my backyard into a live podcast-slash-bingo hall-slash-pre-surgery pep rally. Over 60 friends, neighbors, comedy pals, and YMCA folks showed up to eat, laugh, win creatine, and watch me forget Laura’s name for the eleventy-first time. "Blame Tommy!!"Instead of the full, chaotic raw audio (karaoke mic + summer evening chatter), I pulled some of my favorite moments: Mo’s heartfelt Country Fair story, regular reminders to rest, my brief cryptid-related brain glitch, and a surprisingly tender reflection on what I’ll thank Tommy the Tumor for before we part ways.It was love, laughter, tumor humor, and emotional support friends — a night that made me feel ready for the week ahead (surgery is Wednesday August 13th!), like life had handed me both a kazoo and a parachute. And then I slept for two days.Next week's episode will be recorded before my surgery on Wednesday, and still might have a special guest or two. Ep. 84 - Birthday Highs and Lows - Ep 84 on 8.4 While Turning 42

Episode 84 Recap: aka 42 is the AnswerSo, apparently the answer to life, the universe, and everything… is: a brain tumor, a cat named Milk, and a birthday bingo prize basket with Desitin and creatine in it.This wasn’t the morning I hoped for. After months of navigating this whole brain tumor diagnosis, I met with a lawyer and found out I missed the statute of limitations to take legal action by three months. Three months too late to hold the ENT accountable for missing the tumor on my 2020 MRI. It was a gut-punch. Like, you want to scream at the clock. Or at the ENT. Or both. But instead of rage-posting or shutting down, I talked it out. I recorded a solo pod in my backyard with Milk on my chest and the birds chirping around me. I reflected on:How long I’ve lived with symptoms like constant fatigue, social confusion, and not being able to breathe through my damn nose. How AFib led to a seizure which led to Tommy the Tumor being discovered—a guest who's apparently been living rent-free in my head since at least 2020.How exhausting it is to advocate for yourself in a medical system that expects you to know how to shout through layers of red tape and indifference. And how surreal and infuriating it is to learn that someone saw the mass on your brain five years ago and said nothing. Not even a referral. Just: “There’s not much I can do for you.”Despite all that, I still found some peace in the chaos like Milk sneaking in through the catio to cuddle, birds sounding like tiny cheerleaders, and gearing up to celebrate my 42nd with snacks, bingo, good people, and a live podcast recording in my backyard. This episode is me trying to balance heartbreak with humor, grief with gratitude. I shout out Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, I reflect on why sarcasm never quite landed for me, and I ask some real questions about how to keep going when the world doesn’t play fair. What are your favorite birthday memories? Because even if things don’t go to plan, you still get to celebrate your existence.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. Ep. 83 - Preparing for Brain Surgery as a Tired Person

Hey friends. This one’s coming to you tired. Real tired. Didn’t sleep great, and apparently that hits extra hard when you’ve got a brain tumor named Tommy squatting in your right frontal lobe. But we’re here, we’re honest, and we’re warming up—literally and metaphorically. This week I talk about easing back into comedy after my seizure in June, doing my first set at Bleepin’ Funny and Tim’s birthday. It felt good. Weird, but good. I'm getting ready for my own birthday party and first-ever live podcast on 8/4, and realizing that rest, kindness, and community are everything right now.I also share some reflections on how most comedy sets don’t allow for warm-up time, but maybe life should. Some tumor humor, some thoughts on motivation and adjustment disorder, what it's like to describe your own comedy, and a reminder that being tired doesn’t mean you’re lazy—it might mean you’ve been carrying more than you realized.Got my official craniotomy packet (and yes, there’s a whole constipation protocol section), and I’m just doing my best to stay grounded, grateful, and a little goofy along the way. Thanks for being here. Ep. 82 - A Tale of Two Fridays - OCF and AFIB

This week, I walk you through two wildly different Fridays: one full of joy, the other full of deflation. First, I reflect on my incredible day at Oregon Country Fair—hosting hip hop acts, crushing a surprise comedy set, vibing with strangers at Spirit Tower, getting clean at the Ritz sauna, and locking eyes with the perfect Phoenix Rising cookie. I was feeling present, energized, and connected to the chaos and beauty of it all.And then… the other Friday hit. I went in for a cardioversion—hoping to reset my heart out of AFib before my upcoming brain surgery—and it didn’t work. They shocked me five times. I woke up with a shaved chest, a bruised ego, and a rhythm that still refuses to behave. I cried a single tear. I felt bummed. But I also clung to a strange little joy: the return of Damian Lillard to Portland. There’s a lot going on. I talk about surgery plans, what I’ve been learning about soft skills in medicine, leaning on community, and preparing for a birthday party/podcast recording on August 4th. If you’re hearing this—you’re probably invited. This episode is for anyone riding the wave of good days and hard ones, still showing up, still asking for help, still trying to find their rhythm. Ep. 81 - That’s Fair and Knowing Your No - My OCF ‘25 Recap

Hey everybody, welcome back to Jokes and the Gym. This week’s episode is all about my Oregon Country Fair 2025 adventure. This year was the full Fair experience: beautiful, chaotic, exhausting, magical. I went in prepared—literal farmer’s carries all year to get ready to haul my gear—and even that didn’t cover everything. It was full of those human moments: old friends pitching in to carry bags, new friends chatting over tofu breakfast, kids laughing at my name because of Ice Age. Sharing a laugh in a nude sauna. I got to host shows at Spirit Tower, introducing amazing hip-hop acts in 90-degree heat. Told some jokes amidst poets. But it wasn’t all smooth. Friday I crushed it, but by Saturday I hit the wall. Less than five hours of sleep, the heat, meds, the brain tumor making sounds physically hurt—it was too much. Had to call it.That was hard. I love hosting, love showing up for people. But the Fair community had my back. My understudy stepped up. The crew listened. Our stage lead told me: Go home. Rest. See your cats. This year’s big lesson for me? The Sacred No. Even at a place that’s all YES YES YES, sometimes you have to say no.Fair will be there next year. So will I. Hopefully rested, healthy, and ready to do it better. Thanks for listening. Stay hydrated. Wear sunscreen. Say yes when you can, but don’t be afraid to say no when you need to. Love ya.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. Ep. 80 - Oregon Country Fair and Procedure Prep (And a movie review!)

Hey friends! Welcome to Episode 80 of Jokes and the Gym—80 weeks straight, baby! Can you believe it? Well, do. This one’s a check-in about life lately. (And a bonus movie review!)I talk about navigating my AFib (cardioversion coming up where they’ll zap my heart back into rhythm) and this new brain tumor diagnosis—good ol’ Tommy the Tumor hanging out in my right frontal lobe. Turns out a lot of my struggles with fatigue, mood, and focus might not just be “getting older.” Thanks, Tommy. It’s wild learning this stuff and trying to give myself some grace.I also talk about the sleep struggles that forced me to cancel some Sunday clients (my favorite training day!), even though I hate bailing. Trying to practice what I preach: listening to my body.On the lighter side, I chat about getting blood work done (shoutout to my popcorn-loving phlebotomist), prepping for Oregon Country Fair this weekend (hydrate, rest, corn on the cob, see Reggie Watts), and just aiming to take it easy and have fun.Oh—and after the main pod, I pop back on for a quick Jurassic World Rebirth review with a cat on my lap. Saw it with my mom. Fun to share that little Mondate. This episode is just me being honest about the ups and downs while staying joyful and connected. Thanks for listening and being here. Take care of yourselves. See you at Fair! ep. 79 - Another Neurosurgeon?!? Thank Goodness

This week on the pod, I talk through my latest neurosurgery consult—because apparently nothing brings people together quite like a brain tumor. I share what it was like meeting with a highly recommended neurosurgeon here in Eugene. We talk about how she and her team gave me way more confidence in the process, what we learned about the tumor's location in the right frontal lobe, and the real talk about personality changes, impulse control, and my lifelong struggle with multitasking.I also get into my history of concussions (shout out to my teenage basketball self for taking charges like an idiot), my tendency to blame myself for dumb luck health stuff, and the mental game of accepting this without getting stuck in “what ifs.”We talk about AFib plans, upcoming heart shock (aka cardioversion), the brain model at the clinic, why Eugene and Seoul are vastly different places, and how I'm adapting workouts to “grease the groove” and keep moving without wrecking myself.I also share about the huge outpouring of support I’ve been getting, the importance of community, and how I’m still writing jokes about all of it. If you're going through anything similar, reach out. Let’s keep the conversation real—and maybe even funny.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. Ep. 78 - Running the Light - Book and My Diagnosis in Review

In episode 78, I review Sam Tallent’s “Running the Light”—one chapter per day—as my own life spirals into a week of medical revelations. A hybrid book review and personal reflection, I weave the story of fictional burnout Billy Ray Schaeffer with my own diagnosis of a low-grade glioma, sharing green room memories, popcorn threesomes, and the deep, weird love of comedy, and the burning ball of light that is Sam Tallent. Featuring backstage tales, heartfelt tributes, and punchlines about brain tumors, this one’s a doozy.“You listen to your body. I listen to you.”Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. Ep. 77 - I'm Done With Bodybuilding

Episode 77 – “Greasing the Groove (with Frostner)”Hey friends, it’s Rudy—and Frostner chiming in too. She starts with a purr. Mmm. This week I reflected on my early gym days, starting out in high school with workout buddies, chasing gains, reading Flex Magazine, and loving the world of bodybuilding. But I’m realizing how much that culture also fed into body dysmorphia and a mindset that wasn’t always healthy. After my recent health scare at the Y, I’ve been shifting gears. I’m exploring Pavel’s “grease the groove” method—short, frequent movements instead of pushing to exhaustion. It fits with how I work at the Y, constantly demonstrating and staying lightly active throughout the day.I’ve started to value strength as something functional and shared, not just aesthetic. That shift has brought me more joy and fulfillment, especially when I help others connect with their bodies through movement.I’m also feeling grateful: for the support from the Y community, for friends showing up, for getting to be around comics I admire, and for opportunities like MC’ing at Oregon Country Fair. If you’re going through something—physically or emotionally—please take care of yourself. You’re on my team. And I hope you know I’m on yours.Work with me!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12DgmJSUX_Ptca2ZSg6Ku5Uk8wAdrHPeWkCvwCn_R1pA/editFind me, Rudy Tyburczy, on TikTok @jokesandthegymYoutube @jokesandthegympatreon.com/jokesandthegymwww.rudytyburczy.comig @jokesandthegym and @rudytyburczy and @rudyandthecatsFacebook, Twitter, they also exist. ABOUT THIS SHOW
