Slowing down with Play to Optimise - with Josh Piterman
Introduction: In a world that often prioritises productivity over play, it's essential to remember the importance of reconnecting with our inner child. In today's podcast episode, Josh Piterman and Shradha Haria delve deep into the essence of play, exploring how it relates to our authentic selves and the blissful state we all seek. Join us as we unpack the transformative power of play and how it can lead to a more joyful existence. Josh is an established musical theatre performer and classical crossover artist who has worked consistently on Australian and global stages for over 15 years. His past credits include being a part of the international pop opera group The Ten Tenors, Tony in the 2010 Australian production of West Side Story, Bustopher Jones/Gus/Growltiger in the 2015/16 Australian season of Cats (a role that won him the Green Room Award for best supporting actor in a Musical), Corny Collins in the UK tour of Hairspray and Gerry Goffin in the 2017/18 Australian tour of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. His impressive West End debut came as he took on the most coveted role as The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera in 2019, which he reprised at the Sydney Opera House & Arts Centre Melbourne in 2022/23. He most recently returned to the West End to play the iconic role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre. Understanding Play: The podcast begins with a thought-provoking definition of play, described as anything that brings us into a state of expansive joy and bliss. This state, rooted in concepts from Sanskrit and yoga, is referred to as Ananda, or bliss. However, the definition of play is personal and varies from person to person. For some, play might mean expressive creativity, while for others, it could be found in curiosity or humor. The conversation emphasizes the importance of identifying areas in our lives where we feel resistance or stagnation. By bringing an authentic, playful mindset into these spaces, we can reignite the joy that may have been overshadowed by life's challenges. The Authentic Self and Childhood Memories: As the discussion progresses, the hosts explore the concept of the authentic self, which is often obscured by past traumas and conditioning experienced during childhood. One poignant example shared involves a childhood incident where a playful moment turned into a shameful experience, highlighting how such moments can influence our adult lives. The conversation does not shy away from discussing the complexities of trauma, distinguishing between capital T trauma and little t traumas. These experiences, whether significant or subtle, shape our self-worth and sense of safety. The hosts encourage listeners to reflect on their childhood experiences and to approach these memories with love and compassion, ultimately fostering healing. The discussion also touches upon the high-frequency nature of play. While many associate play with high-energy activities, the hosts emphasize that play can also be gentle and introspective, such as the act of pondering or simply being present in nature. This gentle approach to play encourages a sense of connection and allows for deeper self-reflection. Key Takeaways: - Play is a personal and expansive experience that can revitalize joy in our lives. - Childhood experiences shape our adult selves and can be approached with compassion for healing. - Breathwork and nervous system regulation are essential for emotional well-being. - Embracing fear and cultivating courage are key to personal growth and deeper connections. Intuitive cooking - with Katerina Pavlakis
In today's episode, I discuss with Katerina Pavlakis, the concept of intuitive cook. We delve into the progression of home cooking and the role of intuition and the senses. Katerina grew up in Greece in the 1970s, with a Greek father and German mother. She inhabited a world where food cultures naturally mixed and merged. Home cooking wasn't a hobby or a special occasion thing—it was simply how they lived. Even the local tavernas felt like extensions of home kitchens (you could literally walk into their kitchens and peek into the pots to choose your meal!). The concept of cooking by recipe didn't enter her world until her late twenties when she moved to London and encountered the cult of celebrity chefs and cookbook writers. Suddenly, she questioned whether she was really a "good cook" if she couldn't properly follow a recipe. Yet, everyone who tasted her food raved about it.Katerina has seen too many passionate people lose their confidence to the pressures of modern food culture - the cult of recipes, glossy Instagram perfection and celebrity chef culture - and that's how she realised that sharing her way of cooking can shine a light on the path towards more calm, fun and taste in the kitchen.Find out more about Katerina:https://www.theintuitivecook.co.uk/Instagram - InstagramFind out more about shradha:https://linktr.ee/lifability?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaeiGT9JZc0am_I_0kkt1XFu0QXJ4jPFdy-XBTYvHbmZJ2qWUmq0IoPMyzGfdg_aem_GFMgPLO3ooNLcX1gw5S8UQInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/shradha_haria/

07- Occupational engagement for an optimised lifetsyle
Many people consider the word occupation to be their paid job or an income producing activity, however, occupation is really any activity that we engage in throughout our day. For example, meditating and being with oneself to connect inwards is a type of occupation. As is toileting or scuba-diving. It’s important to start becoming more aware of the occupations that we engage in so that we can start to see our own patterns. We can become more reflective of the ones that are supportive and the ones that might feel good in the moment but actually hinder us in the long run. When we look at our lives, breaking down the occupations into 5 categories can enhance the fullfilement we have in our lives. These 5 categories are: - fitness -mindset -money -knowledge -creativity. When we become of the energies we spend, we can attempt to be more moderate and consistent so that we can engage in an optimised lifestyle. 03 - Sensory Awareness
The sensory system is made up of 8 senses. 5 of these are quite commonly known as touch, taste, hearing, smell and vision. The other 3 include interoception, vestibular and proprioceptive. Interoception – body’s internal state. The sense that provides us with information of how we feel (alerted/grounded) about the stimuli from other senses Vestibular – movement sense (inner ear system) Proprioception – feedback we receive through our joints and helps us be aware of our bodies in relation to space. Sensory profiling types - seeker/avoider/bystander - changes throughout life stages and experiences. According to the polyvagal theory suggested by Dr Stephen Porgess, the Sympathetic NS and Social NS must be engaged in order to tone down the Parasympathetic NS. Engagement of the SoNS helps to activate the vagal brake on the heart rate which slows down the reactivity of being in the SNS. This then allows the ability to self-soothe. The vagus nerve (Cranial nerve X) has 80% of its fibres being sensory. Therefore, becoming more aware of how our sensory system works and understanding the perception of the event will allow us to develop appropriate sensory (body based) and cognitive strategies (mind based) (mind-body connection) that will enable us to better self-soothe. This in turn will help build positive self-image, leading to healthier relationships and engagement in meaningful life roles. It allows you to become more connected with your body and notice how you feel. Preparing for relaxation When you are beginning to practice progressive muscle relaxation exercises keep the following in mind: • Physical injuries - If you have any injuries, or a history of physical problems that may cause muscle pain, always consult your doctor before you start. • Select your surroundings - Minimise the distraction to your five senses. For example; turn off the TV and radio and use soft lighting. • Make yourself comfortable - Use a chair that comfortably seats your body, including your head. Wear loose clothing and take off your shoes. • Internal mechanics - Avoid practicing after big, heavy meals, and do not practice after consuming any intoxicants, such as alcohol.
