A Look At Size Inclusive Care, Weight Loss Drugs, and Weight Bias and Stigma, with Size Inclusive Provider Dr. Mara Gordon
“Weight bias often predates degree completion, for doctors, and one study showed 67% of medical students exhibited overt (explicit) bias against patients in larger bodies, calling them “lazy, unmotivated, noncompliant, and unhealthy” (source). It’s no wonder so many people I meet with have such little desire to go to the doctor. Today’s episode is an interview with weight inclusive medical doctor, Mara Gordon. Mara gives us hope that there is another way to look at health, that has nothing to do with the size of our bodies. Mara and I talk about everything from weight stigma and bias as a whole, the future of weight inclusive care, and how the increased populariy of weight loss medicaitons fit into our culture’s push towards body acceptance. Weight Neutral Vs. Weight Centric Healthcare; Two Dietitians, Two Approaches, with Dietitian Casey Lewandowski
TRIGGER WARNING: This episode contains a lot of diet and body composition talk. If this is at all triggering for you, please take care of yourself and go to another episode. From Johns Hopkins University, Weight-centric thinking is the conventional–and arguably outdated–approach to health that suggests weight and weight management (primarily weight loss) are the primary determinants of health. Today I have a civil debate about weight neutral vs. weight centric care. Honestly, this could have been more in depth, but I felt an hour was long enough, for now. My good friend and dietitian, Casey Lewandowski, is a wonderful dietitian who uses an approach not too dissimilar to mine. She meets people where they are at and she helps them change their health behaviors in a sustainable way. The difference? She and her clients often use weight and other body composition measurements as a measure of success. As a weight neutral RD, I do not, and never will use weight or body composition as a measure of success, EVEN IF research suggests a correlation between certain body fat percentages and health. Why? I feel like the stress of keeping weight off outweighs the affect that weight “may have”. In order to keep weight off for good, you have to follow certain rules and restrict certain foods, and live a certain lifestyle, forever. Not just temporarily, but forever (near impossible, and often leads to guilt when you can’t stick to it). I often find even after weight loss, people are still not happy. What are we doing to ourselves? Join me as Casey and I dive into our own methods of helping clients. In the end, we both agree to disagree. Guess what? That’s ok. YOU can decide what YOU want to do and what method YOU want to use in your personal life or your dietetics practice. There are no rules. Take a listen. Show Notes Work with me using your insurance by emailing [email protected] My Website (one-on-one Intuitive Eating coaching) If you’re interested in Casey’s approach, check here out here The post Weight Neutral Vs. All About Sugar and Kids, with Kids Eat In Color’s Jennifer Anderson
As a mom and dietitian in the food freedom and body positivity space, I thought raising kids without food rules would be a sinch. But lately I’ve been overwhelmed by all the sugar! My kids get offered sugar just about everywhere they go, even the end of their doctor visit (“want a lollipop”?) or their haircuts (“want some candy?”) and their sports games (“Gatorade for all!”). I feel like it’s gotten out of hand, so I gathered an expert on kids and feeding, Jennifer Anderson. Jennifer provides tips on how to handle all the sugar, but without being restrictive and authoritarian. With the holidays coming up, Jennifer’s tips are incredibly timely! Journal Entry: A Close Look at Eating Disorders in College, From My Personal Perspective
** Trigger Warning**: This episode takes a deep dive into a period of my life when I had an eating disorder. If this content triggers you, please move on to another episode. Take care of yourself. Thank you! Today is the first in a series of episodes where I read a letter I have written to myself, out loud on the podcast. Today’s letter is written to my college self. These episodes I now know, will be a type of therapy for me, as I discovered while writing this. It’s not surprising that I learned a lot about myself and my past just by writing down these words. Maybe you will be able to see yourself in some of these words, maybe you know someone who is suffering as I was, or maybe you won’t relate at all. Take a listen. Intuitive Half Marathon Training, and How a Focus on Weight is Harmful, not Helpful
I used to absolutely loathe running. Before gym class, when I knew we’d have to run, I would get an upset stomach and butterflies all day long. I was slow, so I was embarrassed, but I was also not in the best endurance shape (because I was a kid, and I played softball, where back then there wasn’t much endurance training involved). I resigned myself to sprinting only, because I was really great at that (I could hit a terrible ball in softball and still make it to first on time!). Flash forward thirty years later, and I’m running half marathons. Tune in to hear my story of moving from hating, to loving running, and how I trained for my first half marathon using tools of intuitive eating (no counting or recording!). I will have interviews, Q&A opportunities, and a lot of fun topics that pertain to the whole family. I’ll be posting episodes every other Monday. I’m excited to start podcasting again!
