However, I do think we can all make an effort to reduce our exposures and improve the quality of our family's health. I hope you'll enjoy some of the tips and strategies I've used for my family. Being Your Own Advocate in Healthcare
Having the education and experience, it’s “easy” for me to be an advocate for myself and my kids, right? Like when I want to do a specific test or know more about their chronic symptoms, I know the questions to ask, right? Yes, and no… I know what to say and what to ask, but I also have dealt with my fair share of push back. And I don’t know everything. But any time I go into an appointment for my kids or myself, I try to be organized and lead with empathy and respect, and also understand the limitations of our healthcare system. Oh, and find patience. Lots of patience. I hope you find today’s episode about being your family’s advocate insightful into the limitations of being a healthcare provider today, and also tips to getting organized for your appointment for chronic symptoms. The hard truth is also that things take time to find answers, and a lot of the work, starts with you! DISCLAIMER: As a reminder, I am not your healthcare provider and I am not a licensed counselor. Health Hub: Identifying and Combatting Stress
In today's episode, I am talking about stress management. I think enough people can identify when they are stressed and often why they are stressed, but do not sit with their emotions enough to understand their stress response, how it impacts their body, and what they can do to modulate the stress in their lives. We talk about caffeine intake, nutrition, communication, counseling, breath work, and all the little pieces of my stress management toolbox which have helped me in moments of stress and panic. Health Hub: We're Bringing Cooking Back and Not Just Sourdough
Today we are back with the Health Hub, talking about all things food (again!) but this time, talking about the joys of cooking, learning to enjoy foods and home baking, and some of the choices I have made to improve the quality of my food in my house. It is truly not about becoming a 5-star chef but learning to nourish your body and your family’s health from your own kitchen. I believe it is an important skill we should pass to future generations. I know for me, learning to cook was transformational in improving my relationship with food, in understanding the importance of quality, and also just improving my gut health overall. Whole foods over processed, any day! I talk about how I got started with cooking and how this helped to decrease our consumption of fast or prepared or ultra processed food, and how a lot of that involves preparation that is worth the extra work for the health of my family. Picky Eating and Battling Modern Convenience
Picky eating and childhood eating. This is a loaded topic and I finally sat down to record a podcast for you today all about picky eating, and some of the tips and strategies I have used in my home to improve our family’s eating habits. Some of the highlights discussed include: Creating consistent meal times; creating a family culture of sitting and eating together; planning ahead for parties; balancing modern conveniences with whole foods. I hope in this episode you will hear my tone for empathy and understanding, but also, this is a topic I am passionate about and therefore my words may sound a bit harsh at times. I recognize that there are so many layers in eating, food insecurity, and our food culture in the US. But we can still make changes to what we are eating to improve the generational health of our kids. Connect with Holly on IG: HollyLogan_Health Check out her website and blog HERE

Today is an added solo episode for Holly to share her experience with Celiac disease – not to share just the woes of being gluten free but to dispel some of the myths, and discuss identifying and testing for this autoimmune disease that often gets overlooked. It is estimated that 80% of people that have Celiac disease don’t know they have it! Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition, not an allergy, to the gluten protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. It Was A Hard Day... Here's Why
As a warning, this episode today will be a heavy topic and mention mental health issues, including addiction and suicide. As Holly discusses, this was a hard episode to record, and is therefore raw and unscripted. Holly talks about a loss in her life to suicide, the impact on addiction and alcoholism in a family, and some of the male cultural norms in society which make mental health and addiction difficult to cope and/or escape. And also, serve as a reminder that we all have struggles and that kindness, and empathy, can go a long way. A message from Holly: I appreciate your kindness in listening to this episode. I realize the audio did not turn out great, and also, you can hear my kids yelling in the background at one point! I will work on improving this. Also, this was a raw episode for me to record, and I hope to expand on the topic and be more organized. But sometimes we all just need to share our thoughts, unscripted and uncensored. This was that for me, so thank you. Ellie of Sophisticated Grace Studio, Dulcius ex asperis
Dulcius ex asperis…. Sweeter after difficulties. This was a quote shared with Holly after the interview and it was most fitting to be part of the title of the episode. For many people, this may be a difficult story to hear or even comprehend, but Ellie of Sophisticated Grace Studio bravely told her story publicly here for the first time. Ellie shares the story of her loss of her daughter, Caroline, who was congenitally diagnosed with anencephaly. This condition is a neural tube defect not compatible with life, and therefore Eliie was only able to hold her baby for less than 2 hours. Ellie’s hope is that sharing her story allows even just one mother to grieve and heal, and know they are not alone in their story. Her creative outlet for grief was her business which she rebranded in remembrance of Caroline: Sophisticated Grace Studio.
