Why Yogi's Need To Gym More Than Anyone | Kavi Kanani | EP25

I was the girl who faked fainting to get out of the weekly school run.I was in the bottom group in sports class. My coordination was terrible. I felt unfit, unsporty, and honestly a little embarrassed by my stamina. Then at 14, my mum suggested yoga, which I grew in love with. But even years into my yoga practice, teaching it, living it, building a career from it; there was something I still couldn't do. A chaturanga. A yoga ‘push-up’ of sorts that we use to transition into other asanas. I also couldn’t hold a headstand for the life of me. Why? Because I had little strength - physically and mentally. The thing that changed it all was the gym, and particularly with a trainer that made it click for me.This is a solo episode about why I, a trauma-informed yoga teacher who has dedicated her life to the practice, also believe that lifting weights is one of the most important things you can do for your mental health, your self-respect, and your resilience. We go through:Why I accidentally started lifting in Mumbai and what happened in those first 3 months What my personal trainer told me mid-rep that I'll never forget: "Don't lose structure when things get hard"Why yoga and the gym are not opposites - they are the most elite combination How strength training improved my headstand, my chaturanga, and my core - when years of yoga alone couldn't for me The mental flex - why getting physically stronger made me emotionally stronger and have more boundariesWhy I think everyone who wants to mentally glow up should be lifting weightsTIMESTAMPS00:00 Introduction to the Topic1:13 School Days and Early Fitness Challenges2:48 The Initial Gym Journey at 19 and Why It Didn't work4:24 Moving to Mumbai alone and Starting with the right Personal Trainer7:47 How Strength Training Benefited My Yoga Practice and Life Resilience10:13 Grounding Meditation and Aum Chanting✨ YOUR REFLECTION THIS WEEK TO COMMENT BELOW:What movement practice keeps you mentally AND physically strong? If you don't have one yet - what's one you've been curious about?━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📲 CONNECT WITH KAVIInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yogawithkavi/WHAT KAVI IS WEARING | YAMA YOGAThe softest, most comfortable athleisure. We had a discussion about how the breath can not only become a daily grounding practice, but also a life-saving tool in emergencies. Neha’s main dharma (life purpose) is to share with you how you can build a sustainable wellbeing toolkit of your own.Neha shares her story of society’s approved version of success - thriving in London as a banker, but feeling so lonely and disconnected through it. Then, she tried a breath work session and it changed her life.In one of the most moving moments of this episode, Neha opens up about her brave 8-year-old daughter who suffered from a stroke, but how breathwork kept them both calm and conscious during an MRI, instead of being sedated. The breath, is powerful and accessible at all times, if we know how to use it.We begin this episode with a short grounding meditation practice led by Kavi, and closed with a beautiful Somatic Butterfly Breathing & Tapping session led by Neha herself. In this episode, we explored:• Burning out in corporate banking and choosing a new path• What we’re doing wrong with our breathing (and how to fix it)• 3 simple breathwork tools you can use daily• Teaching mindfulness and breath to children• A mother’s story of healing during her daughter’s medical emergency• The science behind the Nervous System• IMD breathwork & sound-based healing experiences• Building a sustainable wellbeing toolkit for everyday lifeEpisode kindly presented by Yama Yoga Active:We are both wearing the most comfortable, conscious clothes - flared bottoms and Icy Pink Tank Tops! Healing Depression Through Yoga & Poetry | with Lavanya Talati | EP8

In today’s episode of House of Yog(a), I sit down with Lavanya Talati - a poet, yoga teacher, and aspiring singer-songwriter to discuss her journey with depression, bullying, and making art out of painful life experiences.Lavanya shares how poetry, yoga, and songwriting have supported her through darker periods of life, and how yoga has served as a practice of observation - helping her accept where she is, even on the most difficult days. Rather than using yoga to escape pain, we speak honestly about how to sit with it, witness it, and allowing creativity to emerge from awareness. We also discuss how, as teachers and creatives, it’s essential to take intentional breaks from our craft - allowing the nervous system to rest so creativity can restore.Lavanya has self-published a poetry book titled Internal Dialogues, which stands as a powerful physical example of what vulnerability looks like when shared honestly with the world. The episode opens with a short Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) practice to gently ground the body and balance the nervous system, and closes with a guided meditation led by Lavanya, created especially for those moving through hard times.⚠️ Content note: This episode includes discussion of depression and emotional pain, held with care and compassion.Connect with Lavanya Talati Poet | Yoga Teacher | Aspiring Singer-SongwriterYoga Teacher with RAA Foundation, Vadodara, Gujarat📖 Lavanya’s Poetry Book — Internal Dialogueshttps://www.amazon.in/Internal-Dialogue-Lavanya-Talati/dp/9370926615📸 Instagram — @yogawithlavyhttps://www.instagram.com/yogawithlavy/🌱 RAA Foundationhttps://www.instagram.com/raa_foundation/This episode is presented by Yama Yoga Active - a conscious Indian yoga wear brand combining comfort, style, and sustainability.Explore their collections here:https://yamayoga.in/Kavi Kanani - International Yoga Teacher & Founder of House of Yog(a)🔗 Connect with KaviInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yogawithkavi/Book a call / Learn Yoga with Kavi:https://calendly.com/yogawithkavi/15min📩 Email: [email protected] you so much for listening!
