    Is It a Need—or Just a Want?

    Every time I talk about this, people think I’m targeting them directly. I’m not.This is a pattern I’ve seen over and over—coaching people in person, online, and in myself: The confusion between what we want and what we need.When you're trying to build new habits or improve your health, your old self starts whispering in your ear:“You need a break. You need that treat. You need to skip today.”But do you really need it? Or do you just want it—because it’s easier, more comfortable, or what you’ve always done?This shows up all the time in the language people use. A client says, “I need a rest day.” So I ask: “Do you need one—or do you just want one?”There’s nothing wrong with rest—but let’s be honest about what rest actually is. It’s not a day of Netflix and UberEats. It’s still movement. Still nourishment. Still aligned with your goals.So the next time you catch yourself saying, “I need…” —“I need that dessert.” —“I need to skip today’s workout.” —“I need to stay up and binge this show.”Pause. Ask yourself: Is this a need—or just a want?
