We have protections in place for them to make sure that they don’t get hurt, and government laws in place built around them, yet they are treated as second rate. We look down on them for being disruptive, messy, or destructive, but that is who they are. Yes, we need to provide discipline, but we can’t fault them for being children. Jesus even rebuked the disciples for preventing the children coming to him. Children are very important, they are the future of the Church, the next generation that will replace us. If your church has children, get to know them, don’t push them aside. And if they don’t have children, find out why. Because a church without children is a dying church. When you leave the house for work, school, or wherever you need to go, do you leave with only half of what you need? For example, if you work for a construction company, do you take your screw gun, but leave your hammer behind? Then why do we only leave the house with only half of our spiritual armor. We could take the helmet of salvation and the sword of truth, but leave behind the gospel of peace, others will get hurt. The people in this world aren’t the enemy, our fight is spiritual. We will always face conflict with other people, but no matter how big you think you are in this life, you will stand before a God that is bigger. And Jesus doesn’t expect us to be perfect, but to do better than we did yesterday. Jesus’ disciples, Peter included, were always thinking of their own wellbeing, from what they were going to eat, to self preservation. Even though Peter figured out that Jesus was the Messiah, he was appalled at the thought of Him dying. Because just like us, he was looking for the easy way. We often say we want to follow Jesus, up until He calls us to do something that we aren’t comfortable with. Follow Jesus, except if He goes into East St Louis. Tell 50 people about Jesus, except that one of them may beat you up or kill you. Give to a ministry, but that also means that you will miss that car payment. Being obedient might mean facing trials and difficulties, but it also means that souls will be saved. Greetings everyone, and may mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. We will continue in Revelation 3 today. This is the last of the seven letters and was addressed to Laodicea. This church is probably the best representation of the Church going on in America today. Their biggest issue is that they had lukewarm believers, which is neither hot or cold. God can't stand wishy-washy Christians that do the bare minimum. They play around with sin, sit in the church pew on Sunday, and then live like Hell the rest of the week. God would rather these people not have anything to do with Christianity and be lost than to be lukewarm believers. Because lukewarm believers cause harm to the Church.. The message is repentance. He wants you to turn from the things of this world, and instead turn to Him. Unlike the other churches mentioned, the church in Philadelphia had nothing negative said about it. This letter opens the same way as before “ I know your deeds”, except that this is a good thing. If you are like the people of the church in Philadelphia, this offers encouragement. Instead of a warning of “get your act together”, it's a “hold on, I'm coming soon to rescue you”. Jesus will be coming back one day, and God’s wrath won’t be silent forever. His return will be just like when your parents come home after a weekend away. Are you going to be in trouble for partying, or are you going to be rewarded for taking care of the house and doing as they said? If this is you, don’t lose hope. Most of them were dead in their faith. God has a job for each individual believer, and many are trying to hide from God because it’s too difficult. Instead, we act like the world and put on a show on Sundays. We have Grace, but it’s a pillow to fall on, not a bed to jump on. God has given us what we need to overcome the world, and we must not give up. Surrender wholly to God, be obedient, and listen to Him, even when it becomes uncomfortable, because it’s only going to get much harder from here. The Church in Thyatira had issues with bad theology, a common problem in many churches today. They were teaching things contrary to the teachings of scripture, and actively encouraging sin, leading them away from God. It sounds shocking until you realize that there are churches that are ok with unrepentant sexual immorality, and others that don’t even preach from the Bible, but only want to preach to satisfy the people and collect money. God knows it’s not everyone caught up in this teaching, which is why He doesn’t hold it against them. In fact, He encourages them to hold firm, because God will give them authority over the nations. They both gave into worldly struggles. One had people claiming to be Jewish, and yet did not follow the law, and the other had people following the teachings of Balaam, causing others to stumble and commit sin. Satan is known as the accuser, and his greatest trick is pointing out our faults, and getting us to blame God for our problems. We all struggle with something, sin is everywhere. But if we aren’t repenting of those sins, and chasing after everything else the world has to offer, we are playing into Satan’s hands. We don’t have to be perfect, but we do need to be repentant. The message to the church in Ephesus was a dire warning, and we know today that the church no longer exists. Roughly 4,000 churches close each year in the US alone, with only 3,800 being planted. The reason is that churches are losing their focus. When we make church about everything except Jesus, it’s no wonder why God may decide to pull the lampstand. Highland alone has gone through several cycles of shrink and growth over the last 25 years, but we aren’t immune. If we treat God's grace as a license to do whatever we want like other churches are doing, then it's only a matter of time before our lampstand gets pulled. This warning didn't just happen to the church in Ephesus, but to all churches that have ever been planted. The enemy has been feeding us lies and has influenced the world to pressure us into turning away from God. John’s vision warns us about that. Jesus is coming back, and while we don’t know when, it could be very soon based on what’s going on in the world these days. He went through what He did in order that we would receive salvation, but only to those who receive it. One day, time will run out, and we all will meet Him face to face. Everyone will stand before God whether or not you believe in Him. Is your church ready? This psalm is one of the most well known psalms written by David, and also happens to be the theme of our VBS this year. Why do sheep need a shepherd? Because they tend to make mistakes, wander off, and get eaten. Without the good shepherd, Jesus, we are lost. Like sheep, we are in constant need of Jesus because despite how righteous we try to be, sooner or later we will end up in trouble. But Jesus will still seek us out, correct us, and set us on the right path. This doesn’t give us an excuse to do whatever we want. Chapter 1 talks about everything that Jesus did for us, which brings us to what we are supposed to do now. In Christ, we are dead to our past. So why do we live like we are still trapped? God loved us so much to send Jesus to cover those transgressions. We have been saved by grace through faith, and it is by faith that we can be free of the sins that hold us back. Most people would mention God, or at least some version of a “god” to them. Christians talk about Jesus all the time. But the Holy Spirit is incredibly misunderstood, yet equally if not more important than the other two. At the point that we place our trust in Jesus Christ, we receive the Holy Spirit as a helper. He is that voice in your head, or that gut feeling that what you are thinking of doing is wrong. He is also that unexplained courage when you bring up a conversation about your Bible study group at work. And that time when you aren’t sure what to say in front of a group, but somehow words just come out that you never prepared and it all comes together? That’s the Holy Spirit. We may never see God directly on Earth, other than His creation. We might not see Jesus come back in our lifetime. Greetings everyone, and may mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. We will be in 1 Peter 3 today. Who all is ready to suffer? Our human instincts tend to avoid suffering. But when we avoid suffering, we are being selfish. By staying comfortable, we avoid things that benefit the kingdom, such as helping out someone financially, giving up a Sunday to lead a Bible study, or sharing the Gospel with your coworker. This suffering could mean missing a meal, losing sleep on the weekend, or receiving an HR complaint at work. By staying comfortable, souls are lost. If Jesus decided to stay comfortable, we would all be doomed to Hell. But because Jesus decided to suffer for us, we can receive salvation. And if we’re willing to suffer for him, more souls can receive that same salvation. Our church has a set structure of worship. 2 songs, announcements, greeting, more songs, preaching, and dismissal. We do things a certain way not because it’s in the Bible, but because it simplifies things. But when we take these traditions and preach them as commands from God, that’s a problem. We can disagree on how things are done, but if God didn’t say it, it’s wrong to say that He did. Our priorities and focus have shifted to things that aren’t relevant to the Gospel. While we don’t know exactly when Jesus is coming back, the things He talked about in Matthew 24 have either already come to pass, or are about to. This is the time to pay attention, and make a decision. Regardless of what happens tomorrow, next week, or in a few years, the truth is that without Christ, we are lost forever. This isn’t the time to play around. We need to share the truth with the world so that as many souls as possible can be saved. The safest place to be in the middle of a huge hurricane is in the eye. But outside of that is total destruction and chaos. God hasn’t called us just to be safe and content for our entire lives. If we’re doing ok, someone else isn’t, and God wants us to help others. The goal as Christians isn’t to improve for our sake, it’s to improve for the sake of the Kingdom. The world is getting worse day by day, and God wants to use us to expand His kingdom and to glorify Himself. He still wants what’s best for us, but you aren’t the only member of His kingdom. Of course not. When we enter into a relationship with Him, the Holy Spirit should drive out our evil conscience. Being a Christian doesn’t mean living the same life you did before you were saved, but having a relationship with the creator, and being obedient to what it is that He wants you to do. Accepting God’s grace offers us peace, even if we screw up sometimes. This doesn’t guarantee we will be safe from the chaos of the world, but it does guarantee that lives will be changed as a result. We don’t have to sacrifice anything for the sake of our salvation, that cheapens what Jesus did for us on the Cross. The truth is, we are all sheep. The difference comes down to who our shepherd is. Some follow the lies of the world, run by the enemy that only wants to steal, kill, and destroy. And that enemy isn’t physical, it’s a spiritual enemy. So instead, follow the good shepherd, Jesus, that wants what’s best for us and gives us life. He can offer you a peace and love that this world can’t offer. That doesn’t give us a license to sin and live for ourselves. The world is frustrating, and full of temptations. It’s easy to only focus on our own circumstances and keep our heads down. But that’s not a relationship. If Jesus felt the same way towards us, we would be in trouble. But I don’t think many of us realize just what that means. We aren’t free TO sin, we are free FROM sin. While none of us will be perfect in this life, nothing that we will do will cause us to stop sinning. Only the power of Jesus can truly free us from the bondage of sin. This freedom brings about peace, even in the midst of the chaos and hardship in this life. You could be experiencing Hell on Earth, but because of the blood of Jesus, you will have a peace and a joy that the enemy can’t touch. Christ has set us free indeed, and if you don't feel free, just look at the truth. Every year, we use a dozen Easter eggs that each contain a small item used to explain the story of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. While the story itself is simplified for children to understand, it’s a powerful story that changed everything. What Jesus did for us on the cross not only freed us from the chains of sin, but restored us with the Father that was previously separated by sin. We now have salvation through Christ, and the hope of eternity in Heaven. Paul gave this blessing to anyone who reads this, but where does this peace come from? There’s so much going on right now between wars, economic uncertainty, and personal circumstances that makes peace appear to be impossible. But there is a peace in Christ that passes all understanding, and that peace comes when we are faithful. By keeping His commandments, sharing His word, and receiving His grace, we could be living a Hell on Earth, and still have Heaven on our mind. Without Jesus, this type of peace is impossible, and there is no hope. But the hope that we have in Christ that guarantees an eternity in Heaven offers us a peace that no world leader, financial expert, or social media influencer could ever offer. The first is baptism, which we carry out a few times per year. The second one is the Lord’s Supper AKA communion. When we take communion, as scripture says, we do this to remember Him, to remember what He did and what He went through on our behalf. He was beaten horribly, whipped, stabbed, spat on, and suffocated on a cross all so that we could receive salvation. Communion is to be taken seriously, because the sacrifice was serious. So each time we take the Lord's supper, reflect on the things that you struggle with, the sins that you have committed, and reconcile that with the Lord. We don’t have to be perfect, but we are asked to be repentant and obedient. If you haven’t placed your trust in Jesus, today is the day of salvation. The truth is that our spiritual gifts are needed for the benefit of others, and if we are being selfish with our gifts, or not utilizing them entirely, then the rest of the Church body suffers. We celebrate with each other when good things happen, and mourn for one another in times of loss. If you’ve ever said something in front of a group of people, and they get upset, can you un-say it? And what then if things escalate to physical violence? All because of something you said. The tongue can sing praises to God, pray over people, and deliver words of encouragement, but it can also curse, bring judgement, and insult others. Just like fire brings warmth and light, it can also burn down and destroy. Because of that, we are (hopefully) careful how we handle fire. As Christians, we should also be careful how we use our tongue. This week, are you going to passive aggressively insult your coworkers, argue with the customer service rep on the phone, and yell at the kids playing in front of your house, or are you going to encourage your coworkers, be polite with customer service, and let the kids play? Everyday, we matrix dodge temptations, and we will struggle, stumble, and fall down sometimes. But when our actions end up causing others to stumble or struggle, watch out. Whether we realize it or not, we are witnessing to the world, a living testimony, and how we interact with others each day will either save souls, or condemn them. The people we read about in the Bible share their stories of their faith, and how God's promises were fulfilled in their lives. But their lives weren't perfect, and neither are ours. We all have one thing in common and that's sin. God doesn't want us to repent for the purpose of our sins for the purpose of salvation, we can't do that, that's what Jesus was sent for. We are supposed to repent, because the sins of this world get in the way of the blessings of God. When we become Christians, we enter into a relationship with the creator, and sin just gets in the way of that relationship. But that doesn’t mean you should live like hell. Every time you encounter a situation that tests your faith, patience, or just makes you angry, you will likely be tempted to respond negatively. How did Jesus react? He turned the other cheek, forgave sin, and was focused on the kingdom. So if you want to follow Christ, you have to live like Him. If someone flips you off in traffic, you should pray for them. If someone leaves a mean comment on facebook or tiktok, ask Jesus how you should respond. They are just as in need of Jesus as we are. In our everyday life, our focus should be on the mission, rather than our own comfort. If you're like most people, it's yourself. Wake up, probably use the bathroom, shower, breakfast, leave for work, put in 8 hours, clock out and go home, and then more time for yourself right? How much time in this 24 hour period do we spend focused on others, whether it be their earthly needs or their eternal needs? As members of the Church, we should be working together naturally to accomplish the same goal, but most just keep to themselves, choosing to self-serve rather than self-sacrifice. Your suffering should result in transformed lives and saved souls, and not in your own destruction. We can decide to do things that only satisfy ourselves, whether it be drinking, drugs, porn, binge watching our favorite shows, or just withdrawing from the world in general. And while some of these things aren’t necessarily sinful, the world will teach us that sin is ok, and that it’s normal. But when these things are keeping us from sharing the Gospel, whether in action or by example, it has eternal impacts. Our life in comparison to eternity is very short, and we don’t know when we will take our last breath. Consequently, our friends, family, coworkers, and anyone we interact with may only hear the Gospel from us. Greetings everyone, and Merry Christmas to all of you. We will be in Luke 2 today. What have we made Christmas about? Food? Family? Gifts? With that comes the dread that everyone faces. The amount of money spent on those gifts, the amount of time spent on food preparation, the stress that goes into traveling here and there, and then after everything is done and over with, we're all exhausted, and barely any time is left for what Christmas is supposed to be about. I'm not saying any of that is necessarily a bad thing, but if celebrating the birth of Christ has only become an afterthought, then maybe we need to do Christmas differently this year. Jesus showed us what it looks like to serve selflessly by washing the disciple’s feet, and explains humility. Yet at the same time, we see Satan entering Judas to selfishly betray Jesus for money. Our capacity to serve and love one another should be just as Jesus loved us. That’s a pretty high standard, and none of us will come close to that, but that’s what grace is for. It’s not going to be easy, even Peter messed up as soon as he was away from Jesus, and the same thing happens to us. That’s why our individual relationships are so important. A lot of believers are selfishly focused on what's going on within the four walls of the church, and are either turning a blind eye to or judging the world. Why are we attacking the lost for being lost? Why are we surprised, angry, or upset when a sinner sins? They are in more need of Jesus than we are. We all won't be out in the mission fields, but we can still support those missions in other capacities. You could believe in a specific cause or movement, yet if you don’t care enough to invest in it, it won’t get anywhere. You can believe in God, yet if you don’t care enough to acknowledge Him as part of your life and be grateful for what He has done for us, you may as well be like the lost. Creation itself declares the existence of God, but just believing isn't enough. God wants us to glorify Him by being obedient, and by giving thanks to Him through prayer. If you aren’t acknowledging God for who He is, you will end up willfully choosing to do exactly what He commanded us not to. To abide in Christ means that Christ is your home, that our default go-to is Christ. Jesus is our vine, and with God as the vinedresser, He expects us to produce fruit. Apart from Christ, we can’t do that. Have you ever had to talk your legs into moving to walk, or move your body without having to go through a lot of effort to do so? Then congratulations, your body is working exactly as it should. Now of course there are diseases and illnesses that cause the body to not communicate with its parts, and the body of Christ is very similar. As a church, we should be doing things together without having to even think about it. Whether it be planning mission trips, assigning weekly tasks to keep the church running, or voting on changes within the church, it should all be seamless without bickering. But as soon as we let ourselves try to do what the Holy Spirit didn’t tell us to do is when we have these communication issues, and the body breaks down. Prayer is critical for a healthy Christian relationship, not just another box to be checked off daily. It is our communication with God, and by being in constant prayer with the Father, you will be able to receive His guidance. We are called to live like Jesus, and show compassion for others that we encounter every day. If Jesus hadn’t done that, we would all be in trouble. There are some churches that hold traditions that go contrary to actual scriptural doctrine. One example are the qualifications of pastors and deacons. Some people have been divorced in the past, and others have struggled with alcohol addiction. Neither of these automatically disqualifies anyone from being a pastor or a deacon. It has everything to do with how he currently conducts himself, and how he treats his wife and children. Whenever we apply additional rules as doctrine, we are basically saying God’s rules aren’t good enough, and that is wrong. I’m sure most of us have (I know I have). Maybe your paycheck wasn’t as big this week as you thought it would be, or maybe the coffee machine at the gas station was out. Or maybe half of your coworkers called out and you had to do extra work. Now these are valid modern problems, but our grumblings go back a long time, even to the Israelites. They complained about not having enough to eat, or limited choices, and as a result, a lot of them got sick and died. Our circumstances might not be as extreme, but if we’re relying on our own strength or modern comforts to get us through the day rather than rely on God, that’s idolatry. Life is gonna suck sometimes, and God knows that. Many were " baptized” as a baby by sprinkling, but that doesn't do anything to save your soul. If our goal is to just baptize people, then all we're doing is giving everyone a bath without cleaning their spirit. Baptism doesn't save you, but what Jesus did for us does. So if you want to be baptized, you need to receive Jesus first and allow him to save you. The baptism is just a symbolic statement of faith. If you're ready to receive Jesus, what are you waiting for?
