Why Do I Downplay My Wins? S3E13
I won Professor of the Year, and the moment they called my name, I got excited. Then immediately embarrassed about being excited.I used to think that was humility. It's not.In this episode I break down what's actually happening when we downplay our wins. It's not modesty. It's self-protection. And the difference matters.I also share the moment two days after the ceremony when my students decorated my entire classroom. Balloons, flowers, confetti, and a book with handwritten notes from every one of them. In that room, the voice that tells me to stay small didn't show up at all. That told me everything I needed to know.If you've ever won something and immediately tried to shrink from it, this one is for you.Be bold. Be curious. Be you.If this episode hit home, share it with someone who needs to hear it.Grab the Life Experiments Mini-Course. Email 'course' to [email protected] bold. Be curious. I Got What I Wanted… Why Do I Feel Off? | S3E12
I was on stage. The crowd was dancing. I was living my dream...And I was having a silent panic attack. Not one person in that room knew.I kept playing because the songs were second nature.I stepped toward the speaker so all I could hear was my guitarbecause I could hear every noise in the barand my nervous system was coming apart. That moment taught me something I hadn't been willing to say out loud:the feeling of being trapped in something you worked hard to buildhappens more than anyone admits. We don't talk about it because we told everyone how much we wanted it.We call it a bad day.We hustle harder. We try to make something work that our body already knows is not working.I have ADHD.In that moment, I was completely overstimulated. For years, alcohol had been doing a job I didn't know it was doing —numbing the noise, buffering the overwhelm. When I stopped drinking, I felt everything. That panic attack was not a breakdown. It was data. Here's how I used the CEO method:Calibrate → pay attention to the signal, not override it.Experiment → test one small variableOptimize → reshape the dream to fit what actually works for you.The answer wasn't to quit music.I needed a different room.I found a blues residency here in Kansas City.Every other week, smaller crowd, people who love original live music, good food, good company.I don't have to manage my nervous system.I just play. That is what listening to yourself actually looks like.---00:00 The panic attack on stage01:03 Going back to the moment02:07 The ADHD reveal and what sobriety changed02:34 Why we don't talk about feeling trapped in a dream03:29 What you do the moment you notice the signal04:13 Calibrate: paying attention instead of overriding04:41 I needed a different room — the Kansas City blues residency05:20 Optimize and the closing question---🎧 Authenticity Lab is the podcast where we run life experiments.Because life isn't something to solve. It's something to discover.Subscribe so you don't miss the next experiment.Share this one with someone who is hustling hard to make something work that doesn't feel right anymore.Be bold.Be curious.Be you.✨ Want the free mini-course? Stop Trying to Fix It | S3E11
My band couldn't get Jolene to lock in.Drums and guitars were off.The tempo kept drifting. My scientist brain was running through every possible fix.And then my bass player started noodling a reggae groove in the corner. It was annoying. Then it was interesting. Then it was the answer. This episode is about what happens when the problem you think you haveisn't actually broken. It's an opening. Not every wall you hit is asking you to push harder. Some of them are asking you to lean back, get curious, and stay open to something you couldn't see while you were forcing it.That's the artist skill. Not feelings over logic. Not "just follow your heart."I'll be honest, feelings alone won't pay your bills. I never feel like paying mine. It's about knowing when your critical thinking has hit its ceilingand your creative openness is the next move.Optimize: staying open to what actually works, not just what you planned for.Authenticity Lab is the podcast where we run life experiments.Because life isn't something to solve. It's something to discover.00:00 The Jolene rehearsal story01:21 The bass player's reggae groove02:26 What happened when they stopped trying to fix it03:20 When hustle isn't the answer04:30 The artist self vs. the scientific mind05:26 What optimizing actually means06:19 The bills line — why this isn't just "follow your feelings"07:03 What you miss when everything is task and efficiency08:05 How curiosity becomes the creative sparkBe bold.Be curious.Be you.✨ Want a free mini-course on thinking like a scientist and creating like an artist? Why Can't I Make a Decision? | S3E10
You’re not stuck because you can’t decide. You’re stuck because of one of two things:You either don’t have enough dataoryou don’t trust yourself to handle what happens after you choose. And most people never figure out which one it is.You’ve probably tried everything:pros and cons listsasking your friendsgoing back and forth in your headAnd at some point, someone tells you: “Just make a decision.”That advice only works if you trust yourself after the decision. If you don’t… you just end up back in the same loop.In this episode of Authenticity Lab, we break that cycle using the CEO Method:Calibrate → Do you actually need more data, or are you chasing certainty?Experiment → Set a clear action. A conversation. A deadline. Or make the decision.Optimize → Treat the outcome like data, not a verdict. This isn’t about making the “right” decision. It’s about building the ability to move forward and trust yourself no matter what happens next.Because once you trust yourself, decisions get lighter. If you’ve been stuck on the same decision for weeks, this episode will help you move.00:00 Why "just commit" advice falls short01:45 The real reason you can't decide03:10 Do you need more data, or are you chasing certainty?04:55 The CEO Method for decisions: Calibrate, Experiment, Optimize07:20 What happens when you stop needing to be right🎧 Authenticity Lab is the podcast where we run life experiments.Because life isn’t something to solve. It’s something to discover. If this resonated, subscribe and share it with someone who’s been feeling this too.Be bold.Be curious.Be you.✨ Want to try the Life Experiments method for yourself?Email “COURSE” [email protected] I’ll send you the free mini-course with short videos and a worksheet to help you design your first small experiment.📓 Want to reclaim your voice? My guided journal + album “I Am” helped me and others build self-trust.Get your copy here: www.kelseymiles.com/100days✨ Support the work on Patreon:www.patreon.com/kelseymilesConnect with me:https://www.facebook.com/iamkelseymileshttps://www.youtube.com/c/KelseyMileshttps://www.instagram.com/iamkelseymileshttps://kelseymiles.com

Why You Keep Second-Guessing Yourself (And Why It’s Not the Problem) | S3E9
You know that feeling when you say something in a conversation or make a decision and then later, you start replaying it in your head.Did I say the wrong thing? Was that the right choice?Should I have done something different? Most advice will tell you to stop second-guessing.To “trust yourself,” move on, and don’t look back. But what if second-guessing isn’t actually the problem? In this episode, I’m breaking down why you second-guess yourself and how this habit might actually be trying to help you, not hurt you.Because there are two very different ways to second-guess yourself:One that keeps you stuck in anxiety, overthinking, and self-judgmentAnd one that helps you reflect, learn, and build real self-trust.And the difference between the two?It has nothing to do with the decision…It has everything to do with whether you trust yourself after you make one. We’ll walk through:-Why second-guessing happens (and what it’s actually trying to do)-The difference between rumination and reflection-How self-trust changes everything-How to use second-guessing in a way that actually moves you forwardThis is part of a bigger conversation about self-trust, decision-making, and navigating uncertainty. If you’ve ever felt stuck in your head after making a decision this episode is for you. This episode also sets up next week’s conversation:Why can't I make a decision?🎧 Authenticity Lab is the podcast where we run life experiments.Because life isn’t something to solve. Why Do I Care So Much What People Think? (Stop Trying to Care Less) | S3E8
How to stop caring what people think… isn’t actually the solution. Here’s what works instead. If you’ve ever walked away from a conversation and replayed everything you said, wondering how you came across or what someone thinks about you, this episode is for you. Most people try to solve this by asking, “How do I stop caring what people think?”But that’s the wrong question. In this episode, I walk you through a different approach. One that doesn’t require you to shut down your ability to care, but instead helps you rebalance it.Caring what people think is not a weakness. It’s a strength. The problem is when all of that care is directed outward, and you lose connection to what you think. You don’t need to care less what people think. You need to care more about what you think. We’ll explore:- how to recognize when this has gone too far- why this creates disconnection from yourself- a simple way to start rebuilding your own voiceThis episode also sets up next week’s conversation:Why do I second-guess everything?🎧 Authenticity Lab is the podcast where we run life experiments.Because life isn’t something to solve.

Why Do I Feel Like an Imposter? S3E7
If you’ve ever felt like you don’t belong… like you’re going to be “found out”… you’ve probably felt this before. We call it imposter syndrome. Most people think it shows up when you’re in a new room, but what happens when you start feeling that way in places that used to feel familiar? In this episode, I share my experience of feeling like an imposter in music and then unexpectedly feeling like an imposter in science, even though I had years of experience there. That led me to a realization:Sometimes you feel like an imposter because the room is unfamiliar. But sometimes you feel like an imposter because you are unfamiliar to yourself. In this episode we explore: Why this feeling shows up in both new and familiar environments What’s happening when your identity starts to shift How to move from self-judgment into curiosity A simple life experiment to help you navigate it If you’ve been in that in-between space where something feels off, this episode will help you understand what’s going on. Why Do Smart People Sometimes Feel Less Confident? S3E6
Have you ever noticed that the deeper you go into a subject, the less confident you sometimes feel?In this episode of Authenticity Lab, Dr. Kelsey Miles explores a surprising pattern that shows up in highly intelligent and thoughtful people. The more knowledgeable you become about a topic, the more aware you also become of what you don’t know. At the same time, your standards rise. When those two things happen together, confidence can dip. That dip in confidence doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.It means you’re leveling up.This pattern is related to something psychologists call the Dunning–Kruger effect, where beginners can feel very confident while people with deeper knowledge become more aware of complexity.Through stories from the classroom and from her journey as a musician and scientist, Kelsey shares why this experience is common among curious minds and how to move through it by thinking like a scientist and creating like an artist. If you’ve ever struggled with confidence while learning something new, this episode will change how you see it.✨ Want to try the Life Experiments method for yourself?Email “COURSE” [email protected] I’ll send you the free mini-course with short videos and a worksheet to help you design your first small experiment. You build self-trust one small move at a time.Be bold. Why do I overthink everything? (And How to Stop Feeling Stuck) S3E5
If you’ve ever said, “I overthink everything,” this episode is for you.In this episode of Authenticity Lab, Dr. Kelsey Miles breaks down why overthinking happens, what rumination actually is, and how to stop feeling stuck in repetitive thoughts. Overthinking isn’t the problem. Directionless thinking is.You’ll learn:• The difference between overthinking and rumination• Why your brain acts like a nonstop hypothesis generator• The two types of overthinking (future simulation vs. past rumination)• How overthinking turns into shame and identity collapse• How to pivot from paralysis into small, powerful experimentsYour brain is designed to simulate possible futures and replay past outcomes. That’s adaptive. But without a stopping rule, it creates stuckness. The goal isn’t to think less. It’s to think in a direction that creates momentum. In this episode, you’ll learn how to:Calibrate what you’re actually overthinkingDesign a small experimentGather data instead of sitting in “what if” landBuild self-trust one small action at a timeIf you’re feeling stuck in overthinking, this will give you the next step.✨ Want to try the Life Experiments method for yourself?Email “COURSE” [email protected] I’ll send you the free mini-course with short videos and a worksheet to help you design your first small experiment. You build self-trust one small move at a time.Be bold. Why You Feel Behind in Life (And What It Actually Means) | S3E4
Why do I feel behind in life?If you’ve been comparing your progress, your career, or your relationships to some imagined timeline, you’re not alone. Almost everyone carries a quiet belief that they should be further by now.But feeling “behind” isn’t actually a feeling. It’s a measurement. In this episode, Dr. Kelsey Miles explores why comparison creates the illusion of being late, how our brains build unrealistic benchmarks, and how to separate distortion from genuine desire. You’ll learn how to recalibrate the thought instead of silencing it and how to design one small experiment that builds momentum instead of shame. If you’ve ever felt stuck because you think you’re behind, this episode will help you see what’s really going on.Want the free Life Experiments mini-course?Email “COURSE” [email protected] I’ll send it to you.

Is it normal to talk to yourself? If you’ve ever wondered whether your inner voice means something is wrong with you, this episode is for you.Talking to yourself is not instability. It’s a regulatory tool your brain uses to create certainty and predict outcomes. The real question isn’t whether it’s normal — it’s what that voice is saying and how you relate to it.In this episode, Dr. Kelsey Miles explores:• Why we have inner dialogue• The difference between narrator, coach, and inner critic• How judgment becomes identity• Why harsh self-talk is often a learned coping pattern• A simple experiment to help you build a healthier inner voiceIf you’ve ever felt attacked by your own thoughts, you are not broken. S2E11: Don’t Silence Your Inner Critic, Use It
What if your inner critic isn’t the enemy? In this episode of Authenticity Lab, Dr. Kelsey Miles explores five distinct voices of the inner critic: the Perfectionist, the Catastrophizer, the People-Pleaser, the Comparer, and the Taskmaster. You’ll learn what each one is trying to protect, the hidden skill it carries, and how recognizing those skills can help you stop fighting yourself and start thriving.Instead of trying to silence your inner critic, you’ll discover how to listen to it like a scientist: observe, collect data, and identify the need underneath the noise. This simple calibration step turns shame into information and helps you reclaim the driver’s seat in your own mind.In this episode, you’ll learn:Why silencing your inner critic doesn’t work and what to do insteadThe five main critic voices, their core needs, and their hidden strengthsHow to name, note, and claim your critic’s skill so it serves you, not rules youA short calibration exercise you can use anytime self-doubt gets loud🎧 Tune in to Authenticity Lab to uncover the science and self-awareness behind your self-talk, and get ready for next week’s episode on boundaries and how to give your inner critic a clear, supportive role.Connect with me: email me: [email protected]://www.facebook.com/iamkelseymileshttps://www.youtube.com/c/KelseyMileshttps://www.instagram.com/iamkelseymileshttps://kelseymiles.com

S2E10: How to Disarm Your Inner Critic
When your inner critic gets loud the moment you start choosing differently, here’s a simple way to take back the wheel. In this episode, I share a real moment my inner critic shouted “failure,” then show how the line “the story I’m telling myself is…” (a framing popularized by Brené Brown) helps you label the narrative, add one counter-story that could also be true, and decide a healthier next step. You’ll learnWhy it spikes during change (perfectionism’s boomerang).Exactly how to use “the story I’m telling myself is…” to label the narrative, not the truth. How to craft a counter-story to widen your choices. The biggest pitfall: arguing with the critic (it feeds it) and what to do instead. This episode is part of the CALIBRATE arc in my CEO framework (Calibrate → Experiment → Optimize).Connect with me: [email protected] • kelseymiles.comEducational only; not therapy.

S2E9: Shadow Work 101: What It Is & How to Do It (Guided Practice)
Shadow work isn’t “fixing yourself.” It’s creating a safe space to hear the parts you’ve been hiding. In this episode, I break it down clearly, guide you through a short practice, and cover the most common mistakes (plus the fool-proof way to avoid them). What you’ll learnShadow = the parts you learned to hide (feelings, needs, traits, memories). Shadow work = the process of exploring these hidden parts Healing with shadow work = increasing your capacity, allowing the unconscious to become conscious, so your shadows don't rule your life. -How to know it’s time: triggers, spikes of judgment, judgment, and numbing as doorways.-A 10-minute guided experience with follow-up journaling prompts.-The most common mistakes (toxic positivity, forcing the box open, turning shadow work into a scavenger hunt) and how to never make them.Guided practice recap (save this)Notice one body cue (tight chest, hot face, heavy gut).Invite with consent: “I won’t force a solution. I’m here to listen.” Ask: What is this hidden part trying to protect in me?Experiment (smallest next step): one honest sentence, one gentler ask, one slower tempo, one boundary you can tolerate today.Journaling prompts (do this immediately after guided meditation):1. What situation did you analyze? (triggered? judgement? numbing? event)2. Where did I feel it in my body (0–10)?3. First thoughts/ideas I noticed that the shadow shared? 4. Did you imagine a younger version of yourself? What did they say? 5. After thanking your shadow for sharing, did the intensity in my body (question #2) change? What is the new intensity (0–10)Share your story (I might feature it)Email: [email protected] me: what you were hiding, what it thought it was protecting, the smallest experiment you tried, and what power showed up (clarity, steadier voice, kinder boundary).Safety notePlease don’t do the practice while driving or multitasking. If your intensity rises above 7/10 or trauma memories/self-harm thoughts surface, pause and work with a licensed therapist. Shadow work should be tolerable, not re-traumatizing.If this helped, subscribe and share it with someone who’s ready to do real inner work—no toxic positivity, just honest calibration.I Am Lyrical Journey: Go to www.kelseymiles.com/100daysShoutout to my Patreon members www.patreon.com/kelseymileswho support all of my creative endeavorsConnect with Kelsey:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mileskels/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mileskels/https://kelseymiles.com

Episode 24 How to Move Forward When Life Feels Uncertain
After 24 episodes of exploring how to experiment in life using the scientific method, I’m wrapping up Season 1 of Authenticity Lab and introducing something new. Your Conclusion Isn’t the Final Answer — It’s Just a Snapshot in Time - Episode 13
What if the conclusion you’ve drawn about yourself — like “I’m not creative,” “I’m not good enough,” or “I’m not capable” — isn’t actually the final answer? What if it’s just… incomplete data?In this episode, we’re wrapping up our series on using the scientific method to guide your personal growth. Today’s focus? Conclusions. In science, a conclusion is never the final answer. It’s simply a reflection of the data you have right now. And if you gather more data? The conclusion can change. And that’s exactly how it works in your life.I’ll share a personal story about how I once believed I was a bad singer—and how gathering more data completely changed my conclusion. You’ll also hear a mind-blowing story from the history of chemistry about how humans once believed fire was an element—and how more experiments eventually changed that conclusion. So here’s the question for you:What conclusion have you drawn about yourself that might not be wrong… but might be incomplete? This episode will inspire you to: Start gathering more data about yourself. Stay open to new experiences, feedback, and opportunities. Realize that any negative belief you’ve been holding onto might not be the whole truth. Steps 2 and 3: Crafting Your Hypothesis and Designing Your Life Experiment
Welcome back to Authenticity Lab, where we celebrate reconnecting with our authentic selves! I'm Dr. Kelsey Miles—musician, songwriter, and chemistry professor—and in this episode, part of our mini-series on applying the scientific method to everyday life, we take the next crucial steps: forming a hypothesis and designing a life experiment. In Episode 10, you crafted a personal question through guided meditation and journaling. Today, we'll build on that foundation by learning how to form a robust hypothesis—one that considers multiple outcomes (best-case, worst-case, and everything in between) and isn’t just an educated guess, but a testable statement. I also share a personal story about how speaking up about my needs helped me overcome fear and gather real data about my communication.Join me as I break down how to design an experiment that is safe, manageable, and specifically tailored to test your hypothesis. Whether it's scheduling a low-stakes conversation or taking another small action, this episode will give you the tools to move forward with confidence. Start Here: Finding Purpose Through Experimentation - Episode 9
This is the perfect episode to start with if you're new to the podcast. It kicks off a special mini-series on how to use experimentation to uncover purpose and create meaningful change. What if you didn’t have to “find” your purpose—but instead, you could discover it through small, intentional experiments? In this first episode of my new mini-series, we explore why you don’t need all the answers to move forward and how every experiment—whether intentional or not—brings you closer to clarity. I share how one moment in high school convinced me I wasn’t a good singer, and how years later, a series of experiments led me to challenge that belief and uncover my true path in music. The truth is, you are already collecting data about yourself every day. The question is: Are you paying attention to what it’s telling you?In this episode, you’ll learn: How to recognize and analyze the life experiments you’re already running Why experimenting—not waiting for clarity—is the key to discovering your purpose A powerful exercise to uncover how you’ve already rewritten old beliefs about yourself At the end, I invite you to run your own life experiment: Think about a belief you no longer hold about yourself and list the experiences that led you to change it. This will help you see that purpose isn’t something you passively find—it’s something you uncover through action. If this episode resonates, let me know in the comments or message me at [email protected]—I’d love to hear what you’re working through.Join the Community at kelseymiles.com/thelabConnect with me:Facebook: / iamkelseymilesInstagram: / iamkelseymileshttps://kelseymiles.com
