Someone says something and it hits you the wrong way and even though you might not say anything in the moment, you take it with you.You find yourself replaying it, thinking about what they meant, how it felt, what you could have said and before you know it, it’s not just a moment anymore — it’s something you’re carrying around for days.Your mood shifts, your energy drops and you’re just not quite yourself, all because of one interaction that’s now living in your mind and body.Meanwhile, they’ve probably moved on and haven’t given it another thought. #149 - Fire ants and Wellbeing
What have fire ants got to do with your wellbeing?More than you may think...In this episode I share a simple story about fire ants that opens up a much bigger conversation about awareness and self responsibility.Sometimes when we are not aware of a situation in can put us on our arse.Being aware of what is around us and the choices we make, stop us reacting and start responding. This is where true change happens.I have been stung by these little buggers more times I'd like to remember. They may be small but gee they pack a punch. Through my awareness of them in my garden I chose not to venture out there. Win win for my wellbeing but not for the garden.Through the eradication party we gave them, I decided to venture out and give it a test drive. Again my choice. This time it went to plan. No more fire ants, no more unsettling stings and no more weeds in the garden.....big win win.I took responsibility for all the choices i made.Thereby not playing the blame game and choosing what I wanted increased the state of my wellbeing ten fold. I’ve been there.My thoughts were heavy and negative, and when I was unwell physically too, it felt almost impossible to face the day.I was put on antidepressants for a while, and at first, I seemed to be coping better. But my thinking didn’t change. I still felt stuck, uninspired, and low. I was just getting through the day—I wasn’t really living.Eventually, I asked myself: If I still feel this way, what’s the point?So I stopped taking them. I’m not saying you should do the same—I spoke to my doctor and was told I could come off them. But deep down, I knew I was done. 3 Reasons Why Quick Fixes Don’t Work They Only Mask Symptoms, Not Solve the Problem Pills, jabs, and other instant solutions might provide temporary relief, but they don’t address why the issue exists in the first place. True healing means understanding the root cause. Whether it’s diet, lifestyle, stress, or unresolved trauma, healing takes work. Ignoring the Root Cause Can Make Things Worse When symptoms are suppressed rather than resolved, the underlying issue often worsens over time. In my own life, I suffered mental trauma, which I believe contributed to the diseases in my body. The medication I was given didn’t heal me; in fact, it exacerbated my symptoms, adding to my pain rather than relieving it. It wasn’t until I looked deeper, at my diet, my emotions, and my lifestyle that I began to truly heal. My protein markers, cholesterol, blood pressure, anti-inflammatory markers, and bone health are all in excellent proportion, and I don’t eat meat. This isn’t just luck; it’s the result of a nutrient-rich, plant-based diet that truly nourishes the body. 3 Reasons Why Meat is Detrimental to Your Health: High in Saturated Fat, Linked to Chronic Disease Meat, particularly red and processed varieties, is high in saturated fat, which has been linked to heart disease, high cholesterol, and inflammation. My Struggle with Giving Up Bakery Products Letting go of bakery foods wasn’t easy for me, and it wasn’t just about taste—it was about addiction. These foods are deliberately made to be irresistible, keeping us hooked on sugar and processed grains. But beyond that, we are conditioned to believe that they’re a normal, harmless part of our diet. We grow up celebrating with cakes, eating bread with every meal, and being told that these foods are staples. The idea that something so familiar could be making us sick is difficult to accept. But once I recognised how much they were affecting my health, I knew I had to break free from that cycle. Ultra-Processed Ingredients Fuel Inflammation Most bakery products are made with refined flour, sugar, and unhealthy fats—all of which contribute to chronic inflammation, a key driver of conditions like Crohn’s, IBS, and autoimmune diseases. These highly processed ingredients disrupt gut health and can trigger digestive issues, making symptoms worse. Blood Sugar Spikes and Gut Damage Baked goods are often loaded with refined carbohydrates that rapidly spike blood sugar levels, leading to energy crashes, insulin resistance, and long-term metabolic issues. The lack of fibre and natural nutrients also means they do little to nourish the gut, which is essential for managing chronic disease. #111 - Why I Only Drink Pasteurised Milk (not homogenised)
For me, milk should be as close to its natural state as possible. That’s why I only drink pasteurised milk because it undergoes the least processing. The more we interfere with food, the more we risk disrupting how our bodies recognise and digest it. I learned this first-hand years ago when we had a cow. My husband could drink its fresh milk with no digestive issues whatsoever. But when he drank store bought milk, his stomach reacted badly. To understand why, we took the fresh milk to an allergy expert. The results were shocking. He had no reaction to the milk straight from the cow, yet he did to the processed version. It was undeniable proof that even small changes in food processing can alter its chemical structure enough to trigger digestive problems. This is something we rarely think about, yet it has a profound impact on our health. The food filling our supermarket shelves today has little resemblance to what nature intended. Over processed, chemically altered, and designed for profit rather than nourishment, it’s no wonder so many people suffer from digestive issues, including conditions like Crohn’s. What we eat should support our health, not create ‘dis-ease’ in our bodies. Less Processing, More Natural Pasteurised milk undergoes minimal processing, only being heated to kill harmful bacteria, whereas homogenisation breaks down fat molecules under high pressure. By choosing non-homogenised milk, you keep it closer to its natural state. Better for Digestion Some studies suggest that non-homogenised milk is easier on digestion because the fat globules remain intact, allowing the body to process them more naturally. Homogenisation alters the structure of milk fats, which may affect how they interact with digestion and absorption. Richer Taste & Nutrient Integrity Many people find that non-homogenised milk has a creamier, more authentic taste. Additionally, while homogenisation doesn't remove nutrients, some argue that leaving milk in its natural form helps preserve its integrity and makes fats more bioavailable.
