chat chit
by James
We exist to show that you can have normal conversations about mental health, where we understand how people have come through their experiences and learnt how to manage their mental health. We go off on many a tangent but the purpose is to focus on the things that might help you or where you might be able to relate with someone's experiences. We hope to normalise talking about your mental health whether you are having a good day or a bad day or on a day where you might not be sure how you feel. Chat chit and the website Yormind exist to to try help young people in York and beyond to manage their mental health and direct them towards the support and services that would be best for them. Along the way there is a lot of chatting chit about all topics. Chat chit is produced and edited by York Mind but the views and opinions expressed in the episode or of those being interviewed and the interviewer. Content warning - Mental health and certain topics

Surviving in the wild with stigma - odd blokes with odd metaphors

A farewell with my favourite bits of chat chit
After 60 episodes of chat chit where I have had had endless conversations with fantastic people, I (Chris) am leaving York Mind and therefore chat chit. In this episode I have pulled together some of my favorite conversations, some of the weirder conversations and some of my favorite pieces of advice that have been given over the years. Chat chit will still continue just without me as the host aswell as all the other parts of the project. You may also hear me with the mini series of surviving in the wild where we talk about different aspects of mental health with clinicians and proffessionals with lived experience, so tune in there. A massive thank you to all who have featured on the podcast as it wouldnt have been possible without all those people being so honest, open and genuine about their mental health experiences. Most of all thank you to all of you who have tuned in for a heck of a lot of chit chat. I hope it has helped in one way or another and that you know after listening that whoever you are, you deserve the support and you deserve to get better. I know it doesnt feel like it all the time but it can, you just have to find the thing that works for you, and trust me i'm still working that out too.Take care, Chris Give us a review or send us a text about what you would like to see in the podcastPlease if you like or have benefitted from the episode then give us a share, review, follow us or rate us on the platform you are listening on.For anymore information, support and services on mental health, visit Yormind which can help you to support someone else or give you a little bit more understanding of your own mental health as well.

S3 E16 - Liam, cocreation crossover, hollandaise sauce and safety behaviours
Liam and I have had a strangely similar life and the crossovers started to get a bit freaky at times. Even though our stories of mental health do run parallel to one another, the way we understand it and how we learn from our struggles keeps changing and adapting. This is one of the key things we hear from Liam in this podcast where ho he understands is mental health has evolved and changed and likewise the ways he manages it. Liam is the head of cocreation for Tees Esk Wear Valley and talks all about the value of listening to peoples stories and from this it helps to inform and improve services. An absolute pleasure to have him on the podcast and to hear about what he has gone through and overcome. Enjoy. S3 E8 - Self esteem, a fitness journey and doing it for yourself with BethJCreate
It's not easy doing the podcast. With so many out there, we think it probably comes naturally to people to be able to talk about their experiences into a microphone with the world to hear and 2 and a half years ago when I met Beth I think she would probably say that she would've never come on the podcast. S3 E4 - Pencil sharpening and football commentary, understanding Asperger's with Phil, the singing storyteller
I'm going to say it, I think this is the most heartwarming episode of chat chit yet. In this episode we get some of the best storytelling and anecdotes that we have heard yet on the podcast, where every story comes with a different way Phil has learnt to understand his mental health, his Aspergers and the loss of his dad. This episode takes a bit of a longer format because we really get to grips with all aspects of Phil growing up and becoming the absolutely outstanding guy he is today. From his diagnosis of Aspergers in primary school and how we understood it throughout his education and beyond. Aspergers is now more commonly know as ASD(Autism Spectrum Disorder) but we refer to it as Aspergers because that's how Phil understands it.We do cover in quite a lot of detail the loss of Phil's father so if this is something that make trigger you then please be aware of it when listening. I do highlight it when we get to that part of the podcast so don't worry you get a heads up. From pencil sharpening to commentating, Phil guides us through gaining greater independence and his journey through the world. Enjoy. S2 E17 – The fear of fish, workplace wellbeing and the smug one from Teletubbies
It may feel sometimes like managing your mental health and trying to go to work aren't exactly the most compatible things. S2 E16 - Beth, hula hooping through existentialism and reheated soup
I promise I'm not even trying to come up with weird names for podcast episodes now, they just fall out my brain.Anyways, welcome back to chat chit and on this episode we have the lovely Beth on the podcast. In this episode we touch on soooo much, it felt like we could've done a 3 parts to this episode, but that's probably because we kept getting distracted and started reminiscing about Sheffield university. Whether you are going to the University of Sheffield or not, this episode covers moving to university and trying to manage anxiety to finding out who you are as a person. We also talk about her dealing with bereavement of a both a close friend and family member. Beth shifted careers and is now a trainee counsellor at 1-2-1 counselling and talks how the impact of her own mental health impacted the change of direction to becoming a counsellor. We talk through all the ways Beth manages and learn more about the benefits of Hula hooping to Chaka Khan....I really enjoyed recording this episode and I hope you feel the same hearing it back.Enjoy.Give us a review or send us a text about what you would like to see in the podcastPlease if you like or have benefitted from the episode then give us a share, review, follow us or rate us on the platform you are listening on.For anymore information, support and services on mental health, visit Yormind which can help you to support someone else or give you a little bit more understanding of your own mental health as well.

I must start by apologizing because yes, the episodes of chat chit are now going out every 3/4 weeks rather than every two. You'll just have to check out some of the episodes you haven't listened to yet. In this Episode we chat to 121 counselling's Holly. Holly talks about her lived experience of having anorexia nervosa and also how she tries to manage her anxiety and transitions through school. We talk about the way that her struggles have influenced the work she does today with 121 counselling and the work she wants to pursue in the future. These things have given Holly her "purpose" and because of this, alongside eating the same breakfast every day(Granola, Yoghurt and a kiwi), Holly is in a much better place. She is such a kind soul and through the work she does, just wants to give back to other people who may need the support.Enjoy. 1-2-1 Counselling | YormindGive us a review or send us a text about what you would like to see in the podcastPlease if you like or have benefitted from the episode then give us a share, review, follow us or rate us on the platform you are listening on.For anymore information, support and services on mental health, visit Yormind which can help you to support someone else or give you a little bit more understanding of your own mental health as well.

S2 E14 - Dad, Carer, Doctor, Priest, the many hats of Martin
A couple of weeks ago we had Helena share her story of OCD, anxiety and depression as well as tangents galore. This week on the pod we get to hear the experiences of her dad Martin; how he managed, how his faith helped him and how it was for him when she decided to go to New Zealand... This is the third parent episode of chat chit and was great to chat to Martin about his and Helena's experiences. You will hear his dulcet tones talk about how his work within Stockton hall hospital helped him be objective when it came to supporting Helena and focus on what she need. What you can tell throughout this conversation though is how Martin is such a caring and considered guy and what I would class as "one of the good ones". S2 E13 - Helena, 3 x the checks and a trip to New Zealand
In this episode we hear about Helena's story. This episode acts as part 1 in a mini series, where in a couple of weeks we get to hear a second perspective on the same story, when Helena's dad (Martin) talks openly about how he tried to support her. This episode covers a range of topics from self stigma and denial of mental health to how Helena has come to manage her OCD after a number of years. From Chris absolutely going round the houses to explain intrusive thoughts with a dog as a metaphor, to a planned trip to New Zealand on her own, this episode of chat chit definitely covers a lot.Due to her anxiety and OCD, Helena took time off school, but how she has battled through and still is pursuing her future in physiotherapy and the involvement she has trying to improve mental health services is absolutely outstanding and is so eloquent with how she explains her story. S2 E12 - Roo and the accidental Pride podcast
We are back after a mid season break with the accidental pride podcast. In this episode we hear Roo's story of mental health and how they came to understand their gender. Me and Roo have known each other for a long time, but unfortunately this doesn't stop me from accidentally misgendering them at the beginning of the podcast. We discussed it and we kept it in because we thought it was an important topic to talk about. Roo is eloquent with how they describe their story, but also very knowledgeable when explaining both sexuality and gender, and the link they can have to mental health. Both educational and a really good listen I hope that people find as much value in listening to it, as I did in recording it. We switch this episode up a bit and start by focusing on the things that help Andy and Chris. In all honesty, we go off topic and talk about mountaineering and climbing alot, but what we do get round to is the way that both these activities can be great for your mental health and can act as a great metaphor for mental health. We hear how climbing acts as a stress release and a preventative measure for Chris to manage his mental health, and we hear how Andy co founded an organization called Black Dog Outdoors to help facilitate people to get out in to nature and do something to aid their mental health. S2 E4 - Mimi, creative coping, chronic illness and a cowboy
Trigger Warning - This episode does reference chronic illness, self harm, trauma, and suicide which you may find triggering. It may show you that you are not alone at there with whatever it may be struggling with, but please be aware. Although at times this episode covers some heavy topics it is full of loads of advice and ways to manage. The title hints at just a tiny part of what we cover in this episode, where I interview Mimi with her story. She speaks so articulately about her art as a huge way of managing and communicating about her mental health, as well as having a cowboy to chat chit to her when she needs distracting. We cover both her chronic illnesses and how that impacts her mental health and ultimately that its okay to be apologetically yourself and you cant offend anyone for just existing!!
