An Interview with Laura Bratton - Grit and Gratitude the Ultimate Pairing

Laura’s therapist told her to turn TOWARD the anxiety. 😳And Laura's first thought? She said, "I looked at her like she had 12 heads."Same, Laura. I’ve had similar moments when I did the exact same. But here's what happened when she actually tried it. She sat down, set a 5-minute timer, and just... let the anxiety come. The tight stomach. The tension. All of it set in. And instead of the anxiety growing? It left. Because anxiety that gets acknowledged doesn't have to fight for your attentionanymore. It releases. It breathes. And then it goes. Laura said it in a way I will never forget: "I could let it breathe and let it literally leave my body." We spend so much energy running from how we feel. What if the healing was in the five minutes we stopped running? 💛On tonight’s episode of “Stress Talk” with Marcyline, you will get to watch the conversation I had with the exceptional Laura Bratton. Please join us at 7 pm.After watching try it this week. Set a timer. Turn toward it. Just five minutes. 5 Things Effective Companies Know About Employee Wellbeing That Boost Profit

As the host of “Stress Talk,” I have talked a lot about theimportance of managing your own wellness and wellbeing. We have had good conversations about how individuals can do so by assessing their individual needs, setting SMARTgoals, and incorporating actions that fit into their lives and lifestyles. I still believe these are vital actions that over time improve the quality of one’s health and wellbeing. Many corporations and businesses also have the mindset that it is the individual’s responsibility to manage their own wellness and wellbeing. They provide health related tools or services that the employee may choose to access.  Decisions to offer these health-related tools and services, however, are usually based on cost to the employer with little regard to return on investment. This causes us to forget that with each breath comes an opportunity. A choice. A decision. This holiday season, women can choose how they will use that breath. 10 Toxic Thought Patterns that Lead to Staggering Burnout in Black Women

Do you park in the same spot at work? Sit in the same pew at church? You probably order the same meal at your favorite fast-food restaurant. We are creatures of habit doing the same actions in the same order at the same time of the day. Habits also fuel our thought life. We each have patterns of thinking that were developed by our experiences. These thought patterns influence our wellbeing. They can also increase our potential for burnout. How Empowered Black Women use Core Beliefs to Improve Mental Health

“I am not good enough.” “I am not important.” “I am damaged that’s why no one will love me.” Do these statements sound familiar? You may have a friend, sister, aunt or cousin who makes similar statements. Perhaps you say these things about yourself. You and I both know that these are not the only negative statements that women tell themselves. We could probably develop a list that is pages long. These statements are verbal reminders of the doubts we feel about ourselves. We think and say them when we feel vulnerable. They come from beliefs that are held deep inside and negatively affect our mental health. 3 Actions Secure Black Women Take to Practice Emotional Self-Care

I often end correspondence, talks and even video podcasts with the phrase “take good care.” To “take good care,” we must go beyond our thoughts and dive deep into our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. Taking good care is more than a spa day or a day spent with friends, although those activities are fun and revitalizing. Taking good care requires introspective action that may be challenging and uncomfortable. We must sometimes allow ourselves to be vulnerable to get to those deep places that keep us from moving forward. 3 Steps Black Women Should Take Towards Emotional Self-Care

We are starting a study of what is needed for Black women to take care of themselves emotionally. Life is tough for Black women. We must be all things to most people and twice as good to some. Our worth is often measured not by our character, but by the texture of our hair, the color of our skin or the size of our butt. Regardless of our accomplishments, we tend to be our own worst critics. This makes us sad, anxious and depressed. We must learn and practice ways to stay safe, feel secure and stand with stability in a world that does not always value us. 8 Benefits Women Get from a Balanced and Harmonious Life Plan

What makes for a balanced life? If you are a working woman, with a family, a balanced life may seem elusive. What does that even mean, anyway? Well, let’s talk about what it doesn’t mean first. A balanced life does not mean that we can use accounting principles or mathematics to determine whether we are living in equilibrium. Time is not the only value we should consider. Our skewed ideas of perfection also do not create or define life balance.   Life balance is as individualized as we each are. The definition, measure and outcome are uniquely our own and requires personal introspection. To create and live in a balanced way, we each must review and consider what it means and how to reach it. In today’s “Stress Talk” Live with Marcyline, we will begin a month-long discussion about balanced lives as we share “8 Benefits Women Get from a Balanced and Harmonious Life Plan.” Marcyline Bailey is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Georgia and a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. So many of us put ourselves on hold while we try to meet the responsibilities of home and work. Mindfulness goes beyond sitting quietly, repeating a mantra or meditating. Mindfulness can influence our ability to improve our wellbeing and cause us to be more resilient. Compassion is the First Anchor Women Embrace for Mindful Living

Mindfulness is not just sitting in a corner on a cushion chanting or listening to a guided meditation. It is not just knowing a method to calm oneself or lower stress levels. Mindfulness goes beyond one single person. The foundation for mindfulness living is that everything is connected. We are all interconnected. Imagine that. What one thinks, says and does affects others. What one believes, drives thoughts and behaviors which affect others. Women have an opportunity to embrace this concept and influence the world around them by extending compassion to themselves and to others.
