Activists Turn Turin Symbol Bright Green To Protest Heat And Drought
Turin, Italy – Extinction Rebellion painted a Toret fountain in the city center bright fluorescent green to protest extreme heat waves and drought conditions. The fountain, located in Piazza Arbarello and described as being in a state of neglect, was transformed with a bright green coating and the message “Heat and drought: those who govern leave you dry.” The action turned the Toret fountain, one of Turin’s public water symbols, into a protest display against climate policies of the government and the Piedmont Region. The fountain was also decorated with flower pots and cups available for people to use for drinking water. Extinction Rebellion said the fluorescent green color was chosen because it is associated with warning and contamination and has become a visual symbol of the movement. The group said the protest was intended to draw attention to extreme heat, drought, fires, infrastructure damage, and pressure on water resources. Extinction Rebellion also criticized responses to the water crisis, highlighting concerns about drought conditions, low river levels, and melting glaciers.

Drone Vanishes In Midair With Revolutionary Spinning Design
Sydney, Australia – Engineers have created a new drone that nearly disappears during flight by using a high-speed spinning design based on motion blur. Called the “Phantom Twist,” the drone rotates up to 25 times per second, causing it to appear as a faint, ghostly blur that blends into its surroundings instead of showing a clear shape. Unlike a typical quadcopter with four separate rotors, the Phantom Twist uses one motor and one propeller. The propeller spins in one direction while the rest of the drone rotates in the opposite direction, eliminating stationary parts visible to the human eye. Researchers used computer models, artificial intelligence, and optimization algorithms to generate and test thousands of possible designs. The system selected configurations that reduced visibility from different angles while maintaining stable flight. The team evaluated the designs by simulating the drones over real-world backgrounds and using a model based on human vision to measure how noticeable they appeared. The optimized drone was found to be about 10 times less visually perceptible than a conventional quadcopter. Researchers say the technology could eventually support wildlife monitoring, environmental surveys, and infrastructure inspections with less visual disruption. The Phantom Twist still has limitations, including propeller noise and visible wires and support rods. Future versions may use more transparent materials or quieter propulsion to make it even less noticeable.

Four Legged Robot Masters Forests Stairs And Obstacles With Animal Like Agility
Washington DC – A four-legged robot has demonstrated the ability to quickly switch between different motor skills to navigate uneven terrain, move through forests, climb stairs, and jump over obstacles such as fallen branches and stepping stones. Researchers developed a new reinforcement learning framework that allows the robot to select from a set of pre-trained movement skills and autonomously adapt to different environments. The system, called action pretrained transformer-based reinforcement learning, or APT-RL, helps the robot perform agile and high-speed movements using only onboard perception and computation. The framework includes three learning phases. The robot first learns basic gait patterns, including trotting and bounding, on flat terrain using a large two-dimensional motion dataset. It then learns to choose suitable movements for different obstacles and environments through reinforcement learning. In the final stage, the robot improves its actions using real-world sensory information. Tests showed that the robot equipped with APT-RL could travel across paved pathways and forested areas, climb stairs, and jump over obstacles by switching between different motor skills. Researchers said future versions of the framework could help enable autonomous search and rescue operations or exploration missions.

New Monkey Species With Striking Orange Lips Discovered In Congo Forests
Democratic Republic of Congo – Scientists have identified a new species of colobus monkey living in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The first sign of the unknown primate came in 2008, when conservationists photographed an unidentified monkey during an expedition in Lomami National Park. After another sighting in 2018, researchers launched a mission to locate and formally describe the animal. The species has been given the scientific name Colobus congoensis and the common name “Likweli”, the name used by local communities. Although mostly black, the monkey can be recognized by a bright orange patch around its mouth, bare grey skin on its cheek bones, black skin around its eyes resembling a mask, and a distinctive patch of white fur around the anus. Likweli produce loud calls known as roars, interrupted by distinctive snorts. Their orange lips make these vocal displays visually as well as audibly striking. Field surveys found the species living across at least 1,700 square kilometers of closed-canopy forest between the Lomami and Lilo rivers. Researchers believe its range is far smaller than that of most other colobus monkeys, making it highly sensitive to habitat quality. The monkeys were usually seen in small groups and often alongside other monkey species. Because of their limited range and population size, researchers recommend that the species be listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Genetic and anatomical studies showed that Likweli are most closely related to black colobus monkeys despite being separated by more than 1,200 kilometers of forest. Researchers estimate the species split from its closest relatives between 5.78 and 3.44 million years ago. Colobus congoensis is only the fifth new species of African monkey to be described during the last 75 years.

Baby Rhino Tamu Hits Massive One Ton Milestone At Oregon Zoo
Portland, Oregon – Tamu, a 2-year-old eastern black rhinoceros at the Oregon Zoo, has reached a massive milestone by weighing 2,040 pounds. Born on Dec. 4, 2023, the young rhino is nearly as large as his 2,600-pound mother, Jozi. “He’s the only 2-year-old I know who weighs a ton,” said Virginia Grimley, a keeper in the zoo’s Africa area. “He’s growing up big and strong, just like a young rhinoceros should.” Care staff said Tamu is still expected to grow, with another year or two before he catches up to his 3,100-pound father, King. “Tamu is a lot of fun to watch,” Grimley said. “He might be almost as big as his parents, but he still runs around and plays like the young rhino he is.” Tamu can usually be seen with Jozi for now, but he is nearing the age and size where wild male rhinos naturally move away from their mothers. Eventually, he may need the opportunity to mingle with other young rhinos. “These animals represent a species that’s among the most imperiled on the planet,” Grimley said. “Hopefully, Tamu can eventually have calves of his own and help grow the population.” Tamu and his parents belong to the eastern subspecies of black rhinoceros. The western subspecies of black rhino was declared extinct in 2011.

Iran – U.S. forces enforced naval blockade measures against Iran on July 15 by disabling an unladen oil tanker that was attempting to sail toward an Iranian port in the Arabian Gulf. U.S. Central Command forces observed the Curacao-flagged M/T Belma as it traveled through international waters toward Kharg Island. The commercial vessel ignored multiple warnings while attempting to violate the U.S. blockade. A U.S. aircraft disabled the vessel after firing Hellfire missiles into the ship’s smokestack. The ship is no longer transiting to Iran. U.S. forces resumed the naval blockade against vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports and coastal areas at 4 p.m. ET on July 14. During the first 24 hours of enforcement, CENTCOM redirected two compliant commercial vessels and disabled one non-compliant vessel. U.S. forces remain vigilant and prepared to ensure full compliance.

Kilauea Volcano Sends Massive Plume 5,000 Meters Above Sea Level In Hawaii
Hawaii, United States – After several days of precursor lava flows and pauses in activity, episode 51 of the ongoing summit eruption at Kīlauea began at 8:30 a.m. HST on Wednesday, July 15. By 10:15 a.m. HST, the USGS Volcano Alert Level remained at WATCH, while the Aviation Color Code stayed at ORANGE. The lava eruption was confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory stated in a Volcanic Activity Notice that “communities may be impacted by wind-blown tephra,” explaining that “low level winds are out of the northeast and higher level winds are from the south.” In an update issued at 10:06 a.m., the Observatory reported that the plume cloud from the eruption had climbed to about 17,000 feet, or 5,000 meters, above sea level. The plume remained mostly centered over the area just southwest of the vents. According to the notice issued shortly after 9 a.m. HST, lava fountains from the north vent were reaching heights of around 160 feet, or 50 meters, above ground level. Peak fountaining generally occurs one to two hours after an episode begins. The north vent fountains were feeding large lava flows across the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu crater. At that time, no fountains or lava flows were erupting from the south vent. Ground-level sensors near the eruptive vents indicated winds of 5 to 10 mph, or 2 to 5 m/s, from the east-northeast. This suggested that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material could move west-southwest from Halemaʻumaʻu. The notice warned that tephra, including ash, could be carried toward communities in the Kaʻu District, including Pāhala and Nāʻālehu, as well as Highway 11 southwest of Volcano. Higher level winds from the south also created the possibility of tephra spreading into communities adjacent to and north of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Helicopter Captures Wildfire Raging Near Spanish Town And Castle
Íscar, Spain – A wildfire started at 4:30 p.m. on July 14, 2026, between the town and the hillside of the castle in Íscar, Valladolid province, close to nearby homes. Aerial footage from a helicopter showed flames burning along the fire perimeter as thick gray and brown smoke rose over dry fields, scattered trees, and nearby buildings. The fire advanced at a speed of 33 meters per minute during its first hour, leading to the deployment of extensive firefighting resources from the beginning of the incident. The wind initially pushed the flames away from the town as crews worked to contain the blaze. The fire affected part of the historic castle area, with aircraft carrying out water or retardant drops over the burning vegetation. The wildfire burned through pine forest, fields, and vegetation near Íscar. Favorable progress was reported by evening, although low nighttime humidity increased the risk of the fire restarting in dry grass.

Indian Toads Turn Bright Yellow In Stunning Breeding Season Transformation
Vienna, Austria – A research project from Schönbrunn Zoo has received international recognition after scientist Susanne Stückler, PhD, was awarded for her study on black-spotted toads in India. The study focused on a rare natural event during the one- to two-day breeding period, when male black-spotted toads change from an ordinary brown color to bright yellow. Researchers found that the striking color change may help prevent mistaken pairings during the intense mating activity. Stückler explained that the discovery came through experiments using brown and yellow 3D toad models placed among hundreds of animals during the breeding period. The results showed that males embraced the brown models significantly more often than the yellow ones. The award-winning research was recognized as the “Best Paper Young Scholar in Herpetology for 2025” at the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, an international conference for fish, amphibian, and reptile research. The study involved the University of Vienna, Brown University in the United States, local farmer Gopalkrishna Hedge, and herpetologist KV Gururaja, PhD. Researchers continue studying the amphibians in their natural habitat and at Schönbrunn Zoo, including behavior studies and the hormonal mechanisms behind the unusual color change.

Firefighters Race Into Floodwaters To Rescue Driver Trapped On Car Roof In Arizona
Tucson, Arizona – Tucson Fire crews responded to a swift water rescue at 12:07 a.m. near South Harrison and East Escalante roads. Engine 12 arrived at the scene three minutes later and found a vehicle stranded in the Pantano Wash, surrounded by fast-moving water. The driver had climbed onto the roof of the vehicle as floodwaters rushed around it. Firefighters from Quint 17 extended a ladder to the stranded vehicle, assisted the driver onto the ladder, and safely brought the person back to shore. Bodycam and scene footage showed emergency crews arriving at the flooded wash at night as a vehicle sat submerged up to its windows in the rushing water. The footage captured firefighters positioning the ladder truck, extending the aerial ladder across the current, and carrying out the rescue. No injuries were reported. Officials reminded residents that monsoon storms can quickly flood washes and roadways, even when it is not raining nearby, and warned drivers never to attempt crossing flooded areas.

Thousands Of Bats Swarm Colorado Skies In Spectacular Summer Flight
Colorado, USA – Thousands of bats poured from the rocky entrance of the Orient Mine in a massive swirling cloud as they spread across the evening sky above a mountain valley. The footage showed the bats streaming out over distant peaks and a small green field below as dusk settled over the landscape. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said summer is the best time to see bats across the state as warmer temperatures and abundant insects bring increased activity. A second video showed bats darting and skimming low across the calm surface of Waneka Lake at twilight, while others flew higher against a backdrop of silhouetted trees and distant lights. On-screen text in the video read, “Watch them fly high Or skim the water!” alongside a location tag for Waneka Lake. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said the footage from the historic Orient Mine showed a large colony of Mexican free-tailed bats, also known as Brazilian free-tailed bats, leaving to forage for insects during warm summer evenings when activity is at its peak.
