Mind the Moment in Everyday Life

Mindfulness isn't something you need to stop your life to do. You don't need to drop everything, pretend you've got all the time in the world, or ignore the things going on around you. Mindfulness is a practice that can lift you up in the midst of the moments of your life, while the moments of your life unfold--and no matter what challenges, opportunities, and joys those moments bring. Since 2005, Mind the Moment has been producing mindfulness content designed to help everyone bring a little bit more mindfulness into their everyday lives. Let us show you how.

The Art and Science of Awareness: Jeffrey Proulx.

“How often can we bring out that spark? That we’re going to be in this moment perfectly joyful and satisfied, without judgement.” Jeffrey Proulx is an assistant professor at Brown University, affiliated with the Mindfulness Center. His research is dedicated to exploring how mindfulness mitigates the impact of stress and life events in diverse communities, such as Indigenous and Black communities, high-risk adolescent populations, and among police officers and first responders. 00:00 Introductions. 01:45 What first interested Jeff in mindfulness practice? 06:04 What has Jeff learned from working to improve health outcomes in Indigenous communities? 17:15 What has Jeff found to be the challenges, and opportunities, in acting as a bridge to underserved communities? 25:09 Jeff’s work bringing members of the police force and members of the Black community in Flint, MI together via mindfulness practice. How do I think about death mindfully?

"What do I want to do with this alive, conscious, embodied moment?" Jon thought that "staying focused on the present moment" meant never having to think about death, but Jess has some bad news for him: thinking about the body disintegrating is right in mindfulness's wheelhouse,. Fortunately, there's a way to work yourself up to it, which Jess demonstrates in her not-quite-a-death-meditation meditation. Can meditation help me not have the same negative reaction over and over again?

"It’s kind of like respecting the emotion, and using it for information." While Jon is off doing who knows what, Jess sneaks Khalila Gillett in through the side door, and boy, does it work out well. Khalila and Jess used to work together, so they know what it means to navigate tricky office dynamics--here, they address a viewer question about what happens when you keep having the same negative reaction to unreasonable work requests, despite your best efforts to "mindfulness your way through them." Feeling the feels may be the answer, and Khalila leads us in a meditation designed to do just that. How to deal with the anxiety of time passing by so quickly?

"The urge to show up for our own lives is, in a way, the foundation of all meditation practice." Tom Waits' character in "Rumble Fish" put it well: "When you're young, you've got nothing but time--you can afford to waste a few years here and there. But when you get older you ask, 'How many summers do I have left?'" Kell Julliard stops by to talk us through how mindfulness can lend a hand when time seems to be slipping, slipping, slipping into the future...a little too quickly. Mindfulness for when you're feeling nervous about flying.

"I start at eleven, and go up from there." Jess talks about how she manages her own anxiety around flying, and offers a meditation you can actually use on your next plane ride.
