Losing weight can be a battle, but having a plan can shield you from the hardest blows. Personally, I succumb to my urges to overeat the quickest when I haven’t planned a healthy meal. I feel intimidated by all the gym equipment when I walk in without a clue where to start.Preparing ahead of time helps me get through cravings and temptations. 48 - Watch Your Habits, Not Your Weight
A common pitfall in weight loss is to get side tracked by your goal weight. I would stand on the scale every day and do the mental maths to see how far away I was from success.If I could go back now, I’d do things differently. Instead of counting every pound I had left to lose, I could have focused on my behaviour. I should have nurtured my new habits and celebrated them. That would have been much better than beating myself up with an arbitrary number on the scale.Notice your habits, assess how much they’re serving you and adjust them accordingly. 47 - If it Doesn’t Challenge You, it Doesn’t Change You
Losing weight the natural way is a struggle. But in that fight, you get stronger. You change. You end up a new person. You emerge from the battle ready to face the rest of your life. There are “easier” paths to weight loss now that GLP-1 injections are widely available. The problem is, the only thing they do is reduce your appetite. I know what you might be thinking. Only? That’s the answer to my problem!You may well think that, but removing your appetite artificially doesn’t treat the deeper problems. We usually overeat for a reason, whether it’s an attempt at emotional self-regulation or simply out of habit. Whatever it is, the injections can’t fix that. That’s down to you. This is yet another piece of toxic diet culture that I think has the potential to do more harm than good. I’ve relied on it myself for far too long. I kind of hope you haven’t read it, because I go through it pretty much beat for beat.The whole idea is to listen to our body’s signals. 22 - Don’t Eat Less, Eat Better
Going hungry or starving yourself is not the answer to safe, sustainable weight loss. Changing your attitude to food is. Fill yourself up with natural goodness and there’ll be no room for the junk. Find whole, fresh recipes that make your mouth water. You can eat three enormous meals a day plus several snacks as long as you choose the right ingredients. A cookie has a lot of calories, but it won’t fill you up. A big bowl of fruit will satisfy your hunger, plus it’ll deliver a boost of vitamins and minerals your body needs to function right. On top of that, you’ll be avoiding highly-processed foods. It’s a classic win-win-win-win situation, because the best news of all is that eating majority healthy food will help you lose weight too. They say if you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life. I'm fully on board with that, and I think it extends beyond the world of work. If you fall in love with the process of weight loss, it won't feel like work. It'll be a pleasure. I have fallen head over heels in love with the process of looking after myself. I adore avoiding junk food. I love cooking healthy meals. I'm excited to train in the gym. I didn't start out that way, though. It took time to develop such strong feelings, but you can do it too. You might not fall in love with my exact process, but you can craft your own. A routine designed around you, with your likes, loves, hates and habits in mind. 15 - Eat For the Body You Want, Not the Body You Have
It takes time to build a dream body, but you’ll never get construction underway unless you adjust your diet. Before I changed the way I ate, I couldn’t imagine being satisfied with a healthy diet. Now I’m at my goal weight I can’t believe I was satisfied with my unhealthy diet. It made me feel atrocious, and it caused my weight to skyrocket. It was only when I paid attention to my calorie intake that things started to change. My new healthy diet is satisfying in every imaginable way, and I can recommend a greatly reduced junk food intake to everybody on planet Earth. Sounds boring, I agree. But our ancestors didn’t have junk food. They survived without it, and I’m pretty sure there was no global obesity crisis back then. Let's leave it behind and focus on eating for a strong, fit, healthy body. 12 - Where Focus Goes, Energy Flows
Whatever takes up the majority of your mental bandwidth is likely to influence your behaviour. If you’re obsessed with a certain musical artist, you’ll probably do things like listen to their albums, go to their concerts and defend them fiercely in online arguments. If you find yourself focusing on food, it’ll inevitably manifest in the behaviour of eating. Food is a necessary part of life, but junk food is not. Neither is dedicating all your mental energy to thinking about what to eat next. Instead we should put our focus on building healthy habits, and let our energy flow towards that goal.
