Stop doing extreme things.
Hey there,Welcome to another episode of The Psychology of Weight Loss.Today’s show is about the necessity of investing in reasonable habits vs radical ones.As a recovering radical junkie, I can tell you that radical solutions never work. Why? Because they…* are really hard to do* require a lot of time, energy and motivation to do* are not enjoyable* burn us out* do not scale long-term Ironically, by defaulting to reasonable solutions, I have been able to create remarkable results. Why? Because they...* focus on doing less to achieve more* are within our level of competence* don’t require a lot of time, energy or motivation* fit into the context of the life we live* are enjoyable* don’t burn us * get results* scale long-term.In today’s episode I share an example of a recent radical error I made and how I quickly corrected it.It’s me thinking out-loud so you can hear my thought process in terms of why I made the mistake and how I went about correcting it.Listen with a pen and jot down any mindsets, strategies and insights that you feel will be useful on your journey. To thinking greater than your emotions,DeanPs. The Ultimate Weight Loss Secret.
So I’m launching a new season of the podcast — with a twist. It’s going to have a new name — The Psychology of Weight Loss. Why psychology you ask?Because weight loss is a soft skill where how you behave is way more important than what you know. And behaviour is hard when emotions get in our way.The goods news is we can learn to think greater than our emotions so we don’t get derailed on our weight loss journey.I know this first hand.I was an utter failure at this weight loss thing for the first 53 years of my life. And I can also tell you with absolute certainty that if you don’t like what you look like, it will negatively impact how you show up in every other area of your life.I finally figured some things out that have allowed me to lose almost 45lbs and get to 9.6% body fat at 57 — an age people think such things are not possible. But here’s what makes my approach different from everyone else…* I don’t restrict calories (2200/day)* All my meals spark joy* I only do 10 minutes of training a day* I don’t go to a gym* I do mostly body weight exercises* I train in the clothes I’m wearing * I don’t break a sweat* I don’t do cardio* Everything I do is simple * It works no matter where my feet are* I don’t take supplements * My only expense is the food I buy* I treat myself every single dayHere is the best part about all those I just listed — it puts me in the 1% of the 1% because I have sustained that success for the last 1217 days.Ideas worth stealing…I am going to use the show to take you inside my head and share how I think about the things that trip most people up.And it won’t just be psychology. Habits and mindsets also play a critical role in my success and I will be offering insights on how I have successfully transformed each of those on my journey. Here’s a master list of topics I will be sharing insights on…* Psychology * Habit design and development* Mindset design* Languaging - Talking successfully* Systems, frameworks and mental models* False beliefs* Measurement and self-management * Writing for weight loss* Weight loss laws* Simplicity* Continuous self-improvement * Deliberate practice* Neuroplasticity* Decision making* Self-discipline* Resilience/failure recovery* 10-minute training* Sparking joy* Strategies to think greater than your emotionsThere will be plenty of ideas worth stealing.Episode Notes… So let’s break down today’s show,Here are a few big ideas I talk about that you will want to be listening for, taking notes on and stealing for yourself.* The 20/80 Rule.* Why I am qualified to talk about the psychology of weight loss.* How my failed podcast efforts parallels failing at the weight loss journey.* Explain what a Big Domino Mindset is.* Introduce the phrase “cautious optimism” and explain what it is and why it is important.* Why having a healthy obsession for succeeding at weight loss is essential.* How I landed on the name for the show.* Resource I reference — The Psychology of Money.* Why we have to learn to think greater than our emotions.Enjoy my friend. To thinking greater than your emotions,Dean Get full access to How to Change Yourself at unrecognizable.substack.com/subscribe

Good habits must work on your bad days
Aloha!Let me start by sharing a mistake I made in this episode. At around the 5:15 mark I said…Products are designed to work on our worst days. They are not designed to work on our worst days.Unfortunately, that’s an example of how my brain likes to mess with me. Here’s what I wanted to say.Products are designed to work on our BEST days. They are not designed to work on our worst days.Whew! That feels good to get that out in the open.*****Here’s the gist to today’s show. We should be looking to design good habits that work on our bad days.I think of bad days like a pyramid. At the bottom are simple things that throw us off like a bad sleep or sleeping in. As we creep up the pyramid we see things like someone hijacking our time with something they “think” is urgent. Higher up is an argument or disagreement that derails us by throwing us into emotional turmoil. At the very top of the pyramid is the worst kind of days possible: dealing with loss and grief. That last one is something I have been thinking a lot about lately. I have been very lucky and fortunate that I have not had a lot of that to deal with yet. But I will and I am trying to prepare myself for that.In the episode, I talk about that and share a story about why I think good habits are important to dealing with the devastation that comes with loss and grief. It’s a good listen with lots of takeaways for you to noodle on as you rethink how you design and adopt habits.*****Enjoy and thank you for your support. Keep being awesome 😎, 🇨🇦🇨🇦PS. I mention in the show that I coach people on how to build good habits to build their version of a highly successful body. The false thinking behind cheat days.
Want to know something I have not done in the 951 days I have been on my Successful Body Journey? A CHEAT DAY!Why?Because when you actually break down the thinking, you realize it’s a ridiculous idea that defies common sense. In this episode I’m going to share 3 reasons the cheat day concept is incredibly poor thinking that dramatically decreases your chances of building a highly successful body.To hammer home the ridiculousness of the idea, I compare it to drug use and cheating on a romantic partner. You’ll understand once you listen to the show. It’s worth noting that these views are my own. Your job is listen with an open mind, steal what you think is useful and discard everything that you think is useless. Enjoy my friend. To becoming unrecognizable,Dean PS. Decide in advance
Hey - It’s Dean.So I’m up at a friend’s cottage this weekend. They are all off skiing so I thought I would use the quiet time to record a podcast episode for you on the power of “Deciding in Advance.”One of the common mistakes people make on their journey to achieve their version of a highly successful body is they show up somewhere then decide what they are going to eat. I do the exact opposite. I decide and then I show up.The distinction between the two approaches may sound trivial, but the impact of the latter is tremendous.I share the details in this episode and it relates to this picture I took of the foods I was bringing with me for my trip.It only takes one idea to transform your body and your life. Create essential habits that last.
Hey there my friend,So the second episode of my podcast, Unrecognizable with Dean Dwyer, is now available. The purpose of this show is to teach you a skill you have never been exposed to … the ability to change your own behaviours so you can achieve those things you desire most. It is the greatest skill we can learn how to master, because it is the key to immediate and enduring happiness. It’s the ultimate superpower. Here’s what you are in store for today. In this episode I share a 6-part framework that you can begin using now to change any behaviour that has prevented you from not only achieving your potential, but exceeding it.Here's a preview of what you will learn. 1. Accept that behaviours are skills & all skills can be learned and mastered. We vastly underestimate our ability to teach ourselves anything, whether that thing be discipline, resilience, or patience to name a few.2. Establish your why. There are two key questions to answer here. What's in it for you? And what's in it for others when you achieve your goal?3. Acquire a new way to think about your problem.Every problem we have exists because he have a false belief around that area and that prevents us from having success. We need to identity what that false belief is and then look to counter it by creating a new way of thinking that I call The Big Domino Mindset.4. Understand why it's vital to keep your commitments to yourself. There are 3 aspects to explore here. The frequency of a new habit, it’s duration and the psychology behind your commitment.5. Default to simplicity.Humans are hardwired for complexity, but complexity is not sustainable long-term. You must rigorously, relentlessly and ruthlessly eliminate the unnecessary.6. Grow as you go.Learn how to navigate failure, imperfection and inconsistency as you strive to create profound change. What's your takeaway?Knowledge is NOT power. Acting on what we learn to create meaningful and impactful transformation in our life is. My suggestion is to listen to this episode actively with the idea of focusing on one big idea that really resonates with you that you can apply to your life now.Enjoy my friend,To becoming unrecognizable,DeanPS. Why avoidance is a TERRIBLE strategy
By default I'm an avoider. If something gets the better of me (meaning it chews me up and spits me out emotionally) I will avoid it to spare myself any future anguish. But here's the thing. Avoidance in the short-term can be a positive thing IF there's a plan in place to build resiliency to that thing moving forward. But avoidance as a long-term plan is a terrible solution because avoidance forces us to live small. Like really small. And the goal in life is to live big. Like really BIG! And you can't do that when you are running from all your major problems in life. In today's episode I share 3 things that will provide tremendous value for you... Why you need to adopt the "avoidance is a terrible strategy" mindset. A story of how I conquered my over-eating problem (or how I stopped eating like a dog) and how you can steal that process and use it in your life . Why you should make a conscious choice to address that big thing you have been avoiding in your life so you can create a future that is much bigger than your past. Most importantly, I highly encourage you to steal my methodology and use it to tackle that big thing you have been avoiding in your life. 3 mindsets that helped me lose 25lbs (that will help you as well)
I had great success transforming how I looked back in 2011, 2012 and the early part of 2013 and then over time, bad habits and faulty logic began to creep back in and soon I was pretty much back to where I once was; overweight and not liking the look of the body I had created for myself. Flash forward 8 years and I now weigh 169.6 lbs as of this episode. It's my lowest weight since birth. OK, I kid. It's my lowest weight in 35 years. The last time I weighed this little I was 19 years old. In today's episode I share 3 mindsets (of the 25 I have identified) that helped me "effortlessly" build my version of a successful body. The vital behaviour mindset The think in decades not days mindset The law of cause and effect mindset These are powerful mindsets that have vast applications beyond building a successful body. Why positive thinking is useless
In today's episode I share a case study of a major mindset mistake I see many people make in online communities that they are a part of. Here is what I dig into in today's show... The difference between 1st Level Thinking vs. 2nd Level Thinking (hat tip to investor Howard Marks for this brilliant concept). Why you should NOT be asking advice from this group of people EVER! Why positive thinking is useless when it comes to helping you solve difficult problems. That's it. Make sure you pay attention to your own thoughts that arise and be sure to pull out the principles that you can apply to all areas of your life. Now go be awesome today my friend. Everything is figure-out-able
In today's episode I dive into a mindset that I absolutely love. EVERYTHING IS FIGURE-OUT-ABLE. The show is based on a mindset that I discovered from a gal doing amazing things in the world, Marie Forleo. Coincidentally she recently published a book by the same name. You should definitely check that out. Here is what I dig into in today's show... How a rabbit taught me to believe in this mindset, even though things didn't turn out quite as well as I hoped. A story about my cat, his bad attitude (oh it's baaaaddddd!) and how I reframed and solved a problem that I falsely believed was impossible to solve. Why you need to be careful how you frame the problems in your life so you aren't inadvertently eliminating the possibility for finding a solution. And don't forget to pay attention to the thoughts that arise as you are listening to this. Acknowledge them, capture them and noodle on them in a way that lets you do something extraordinary with them. OK, that's it. Now go make awesome sh*t happen today. Dean from Canada PS. Building your ground zero skills
In today's episode I hit on some big ideas around a concept I call ground zero skills. This is a mindset I think about often, especially in a time where job security for most no longer exists. The show is based on a hypothetical question. If you lost everything financially today and you had nothing but a laptop and an internet connection, what skills do you possess that would allow you to begin making money tomorrow? Here is what I dig into in today's show... I share the story of a young woman who was let go from her job and forced to start from scratch with a ground zero skill she had acquired. The $1000 course that I invested in to acquire an extremely valuable ground zero skill. Why you need to protect yourself by creating a ground zero skill of your own. Before I go, I always end the same way. Remember to pay attention to the thoughts that scratch their way to the surface while you are listening to this. Don't ignore them. Acknowledge them, capture them and noodle on them in a way that lets you do something extraordinary with them. OK, that's it. Now go be freaking awesome today. Dean-o PS. The power of making relationship deposits
In today's episode I hit on some big ideas around the Relationship Deposit Mindset. This is a mindset I practice every single day. It's always my goal to make a relationship deposit. By that I mean I am always looking to add value to someone's life so that when they exit the transaction their life is better than it was before. Here is what I dig into in today's show... I share the story of something that happened to me with a few Starbucks employees and how I discovered that my behaviour is contagious and can impact others on my behave, even when I myself am not physically present. I break down some of the tactics I use to make relationship deposits. And I share some strategies that you can start using right now to begin making relationship deposits with everyone who enters your circle of influence. I will sign off by reminding you to pay attention to your thoughts that claw their way to the surface while you are listening to this. Don't ignore them. Instead, acknowledge them, capture them and noodle on them in a way that lets you do something extraordinary with them. OK, that's it. Now go do something remarkable with today my friend and remember - keep being awesome. Dean-o PS. If you like the show and you want to make a relationship deposit of your own, consider leaving an iTunes review. Thanks mon ami. :-) PPS. This was actually a lost episode. The awesomeness of aging
In today's episode I hit on 3 big ideas about the awesomeness of aging as I enter my 54th year on the planet - or day 19,710 for those playing along at home. Here's what I dig deeper on... Why I don't post my birthday on my Facebook profile. It has something to do with our human hardwiring to follow the herd. Why getting to today is truly a miracle we need to do a better job embracing and celebrating. Why getting older is awesome and how it's possible to live more in the upcoming year than the previous ten. And before I sign off, just a simple reminder. Pay attention to the thoughts that bubble to the surface as you listen to this episode. If they claw their way to the surface of your grey matter it means they are important. Acknowledge them. Capture them. Noodle on them. And if they are game-changing, find a way to act on them. Ok that's it. Now go do something remarkable with today my friend and remember - keep being awesome. Dean PS. If you are looking for a way to support the show and the work I do, consider leaving a review on iTunes. It only takes a minute, but it definitely helps the show reach a larger audience. Why I do 5-minute abs (4 whys)
What's going on my friend? Dean Dwyer here. If you have been listening to these shows, then you have heard me mention that I designed a program for myself called 5-minute abs. (Don't you dare think of one-upping me with 4-minute abs!!) It has worked remarkably well, much to the surprise of my abs. Well a young man from New York (who coincidentally owns a super cool acting studio that sports Oscar winner Sam Rockwell as a former student) asked me if I could elaborate on what I do. So {{first_name}}, I thought I would use this podcast to do that. BUT I will go one better. Not only will I tell you what I do, but I will tell you the 4 WHYS behind WHAT I do. The WHYS will be far more valuable to you than my WHAT. OK enough. Go have a listen my friend. Dean Get full access to How to Change Yourself at unrecognizable.substack.com/subscribe

Turning failure into wisdom
What's going on my friend? So I think you will find today's podcast quite amusing. in the last episode I went into detail about how I use my willpower protocol to build and maintain my version of a successful body when attending events that are outside my control. And I loved doing the before and after format so I could model the thinking behind how and why I do what I do. BUT, it wasn't until after I released the podcast that I discovered there was a problem. I told you my plan was implemented perfectly. I discovered the next morning that IT WAS NOT. Here's how I found out. Step 5 in the willpower protocol is to extract wisdom. I always do that the morning after. So when I sat down to review the previous day, I uncovered 3 mistakes that I did not know I had made when I recorded that initial "after" episode for you. In this episode, I breakdown... the one thing I did when I woke up that immediately revealed I had made a big boo boo. the 3 mistakes I uncovered after I was armed with my new information. how I converted those mistakes into timeless wisdom that will have a remarkable impact on my success moving forward. That's it my friend. Enjoy. And if you are curious to learn more about my willpower protocol, I will be doing a relaunch of the new and improved course over the coming weeks. Stay tuned. Stay afraid
So I have mentioned before that I have created a program for myself called The Successful Body Protocol. I put it together so I could create a body I was proud of that would support me well into my 70s, 80s and 90s. There are a number of pieces to the protocol. One piece is my Score Card for Success. This is comprised of 10 vital behaviours I perform every single day without fail. And #10 on that list is, "Keep score and extract wisdom." Every night I give myself a score out of 10 (perfection is always the goal) and then review a series of questions to capture wisdom that will serve me for years to come. A few nights ago, I wrote this in my journal... Stay afraid! This is a reminder to myself not to get overconfident with my abilities. I am writing this because I caught myself thinking how effortless it has become to fast. Not eating at night was so difficult for so long and now I don’t even think about it. I feel like I have the problem solved for good. BUT THAT'S RESISTANCE TALKING!!! That’s resistance trying to get me to let my guard down; to lower my standards for just a second... In today's podcast I expand on this journal entry and how staying afraid will allow me to thrive for decades to come. I also dive a bit more into that elusive force known as Resistance. Be sure to listen. There are some great takeaways you can apply to your journey. Get full access to How to Change Yourself at unrecognizable.substack.com/subscribe

Removing resistance
When Steve Jobs came back to Apple for his second and most successful stint, one of the first things he did is cut their product line by 70%. As Jobs would later say, "Deciding what not to do is as important as deciding what to do." I disagree. I think deciding what not to do is even more important than what to do, because the list of what not do is MUCH longer. And each item on that list of unnecessary things comes with its own unique brand of resistance that beats us down and burns us out over time. In today's podcast episode I share a personal story of how I am going about removing resistance. As you are listening I would suggest two things. One. Pay attention to the thoughts that bubble up to the surface, even if they are not related to resistance. They are important. Two. When the episode is over do this powerful thinking exercise. Identify one area of your life where you have created a tremendous amount of resistance. What could you begin to remove to reduce or eliminate the resistance it has created? That's it my friend. The One Thing Mindset
What if society has it all wrong? What if the most productive people are those who focus on the counter-intuitive idea of doing less to accomplish more.
