S2, Ep3: The Healing Powers of Play with Siobhan Wilson
In this weeks episode I am joined by Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist and Play Therapist, Siobhan Wilson. Siobhan is also the owner of Roe Valley Therapy Centre in Limavady and just so happens to be one of my closest friends!Siobhan and I met back in 2005 during our Counselling Skills course in Limavady College. We sat beside each other on the first week and we've been beside each other ever since, supporting each other through life’s big moments. When I began recording the introduction with Siobhan I got really emotional talking about our journey together over the last 18-years. The tears flowed as I reflected on the trajectory of our personal and professional lives over almost two decades. Whilst there has been so much change, growth, healing and evolution, the one constant has been our support and deep respect for one another. I am so grateful. When the tears settled, we then experienced another big release through lots of uncontrollable belly laughter! The tears were tripping us but in a different way! Finally, with the help and support of some of Siobhan’s sensory balls and through co-regulation, we were able to feel grounded enough to start recording the podcast. And just as I expected, it flowed beautifully.During our warm and insightful conversation about the healing powers of play, we discuss:The therapeutic processHow children express their stored stressors and trauma through playThe role of the parent The therapeutic use of selfBefriending our nervous system systemCo-regulation Attunement Rupture and repair If you'd like to work with Siobhan, you can contact her on:www.thecreativepsychotherapist.com or www.roevalleytherapycentre.com Support the showThanks for listening!Follow me on Facebook or Instagram. If you'd like to explore how my Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy can support you, please get in touch to book a free consultation.Registration has now opened for our trauma-informed Certified Laughter Yoga Leader training in March. S2, Ep2: Zen Meditation, Somatic Experiencing & Early Developmental Trauma with Alex Greene
This week I am=joined by Alex Greene, who began studying the mind body connection in Hawaii in 2000 through Zen meditation and traditional martial arts. This lead to a curiosity in structural bodywork. Alex found that becoming certified in bodywork was the 'missing ingredient' in his practice at that time. This lead to further comprehensive trainings in understanding the systems of the body. He then became aware of the connection between hands-on bodywork and psycho-emotional trauma connected to the body. This lead to many further advanced trainings such as, Somatic Experiencing, NARM, DARe, Brainspotting, Safe & Sound Protocol, and TRE. You can read all about Alex's extensive trainings on his website:https://www.redbeardsomatictherapy.comDuring this deeply meaningful, warm and rich conversation, we discuss:Zen Mediation & mindfulness Martial Arts & movement Bodywork & the nervous systemSomatic Experiencing Early Developmental TraumaImplicit and explicit memoryAttunement Co-regulationRepair & recovery I hope you enjoy the conversation!Alex also has an embodiment podcast you can listen to on the following links:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC2PAl90RM1NbZ6L0bsszykDzz-wLF47Qhttps://www.redbeardsomatictherapy.com/podcastSupport the showThanks for listening!Follow me on Facebook or Instagram. If you'd like to explore how my Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy can support you, please get in touch to book a free consultation.Registration has now opened for our trauma-informed Certified Laughter Yoga Leader training in March. S1, Ep10: Embodied Relaxation
To celebrate our 10th episode and end of our first season of EMBODY, Michelle shares one of her most favourite and popular embodied relaxation practices! (For obvious reasons, please do not drive whilst listening to this). In today's modern and busy world, embodied relaxation is a gentle and safe way to reconnect to the body, inviting all parts to release tension and stress. It offers rest-bite for the mind and all the thoughts we think every single day. In case you're wondering, we think on average 50,000 thoughts every day! This down-regulation practice is particularly beneficial for anyone who experiences a lot of fight/flight energy in their body, which can feel like living in a state of hypervigilance (constantly assessing the level of threat around you). It can also be helpful for anyone who disconnects from their body a lot. This embodied practice is also helpful for stress in general, sleep issues and reducing feelings of overwhelm. Hope you enjoy! If you'd like to explore how I work in more detail, I am hosting an online workshop on Tuesday 18th July from 7pm to 8.30pm on A Body Centred Approach to Anxiety. S1, Ep5: Routine medical procedures & the nervous system
In this episode, Michelle, shares why our nervous system can have a big emotional response to something that is deemed 'routine' and how our mind will want to constantly over-ride the somatic self.Michelle discusses:* Why boundary ruptures can make these routine appointments more challenging;* Even though we know in our mind that we need these life-saving procedures, our body might have a completely different emotional response, leaving us feeling confused;* Why lying on a treatment bed automatically puts our nervous system in a state of immobility, meaning we find it more difficult to access our agency;* Practical resources to help support your nervous system. Thanks for listening.Michelle xxSupport the showThanks for listening!Follow me on Facebook or Instagram. If you'd like to explore how my Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy can support you, please get in touch to book a free consultation.Registration has now opened for our trauma-informed Certified Laughter Yoga Leader training in March. S1, Ep2: Becoming more visible, taking risks & growing with our nervous system!
In this episode, Michelle, shares some insight into becoming more visible and the nervous system. Sharing our voice, taking up more space, and sharing our professional expertise, views and opinions can feel exposing, especially when you are a woman.Every time we wish to seek out a new job, a promotion, professional development, a new course or training, it requires our nervous system to match where we aspire to be. Imposture syndrome can bubble up to the surface creating immobility, doubt and procrastination. Or if we power through we might notice exhaustion and burnout from the constant override. The more I support female professionals who have a strong desire to harness their personal power, expertise, strengths and expand their professional practice further, the more I’ve noticed a pattern in the nervous system response.Taking up more space, sharing our voice, taking risks, and being more embodied in our professional practice can actually be very activating for our nervous system and can trigger a traumatic stress response. This requires building capacity in our nervous system so we can grow into the successful person we desire to be. We do this by supporting the nervous system to expand it’s window of tolerance to career development. This helps us to occupy more space and allow us to grow into the version of ourselves that we desire to be.When we work at a deeper level with our nervous system we become more embodied which means we experience life in much more connected way. This means we FEEL more and we are less likely to minimise, dismiss, ignore, power through, or push through. Our mind and ego is no longer in charge. Instead, we include the intelligence of the body and check in to see what the body has to say about our decisions and choices. That’s not to say there is an absence of fear or anxiety about doing something new but our nervous system has the capacity to straddle the two parts and with the right support we can rise to being more seen in the world. S1, Ep1: Why embodiment is so hard in today's modern culture.
In this episode, Michelle, explores why embodiment is so hard in today's modern culture. "We don't have enough real life mirrors in our society reflecting back to us what it's like to be deeply human so we feel more more seen, heard and understood." We need to change the mental health conversation from "what's wrong with you?" to "what happened to you?" There is nothing wrong with you, but there is plenty wrong with our society. We live in a society that values being busy, stress, powering through, being more, doing more, rather than rest, play and the intelligence of our body. We are conditioned to ignore the intelligence of our body, our gut instinct and our inner-power. This causes internal conflict because our biology simply doesn't match what our culture expects of us. The two don't match. Inviting a more embodied practice into our lives helps us to feel more connected to ourselves, our relationships and the world around us. It also means we can safely explore our limits with curiosity and compassion.
