Race Reflections, Gravel Biking, & the Butter Purse

This episode is a mix of race recaps, training thoughts, and a very unexpected unboxing moment. We get into gravel biking adventures, race day experiences, elevation gain, pacing strategies, and the effort it takes to stay consistent when things start to get tough. There is plenty of running talk, from Big Sur reflections and race mindset to recovery struggles and what actually goes through your brain during long efforts. It is an honest look at training, performance, and figuring things out as you go.And then, out of nowhere, Carolyn's new purse makes an appearance. A full unboxing and a moment that steals the show. A mix of running, life updates, and a little bit of everything in between.

Oceanside Recap, Controversial DQs, & Burnouts

Diving into Carolyn’s Oceanside recap today - they cover what happened on the bike and all things race day. They also dive into the recent controversy that happened with a popular running influencer at his first half ironman (Michelle gets Carolyn’s take on the whole thing). Michelle has a bad experience with The Feed (spoiler - it was a blood bath) and they also touch on gravel bikes (covering Carolyn’s two new bikes in her rotation), toenails, the London marathon, melasma, and more (not a super gross episode, so Michelle’s mom might like that).

Mallorca Miles, Race Prep, & Moving Updates

This week Carolyn takes us to Mallorca and brings us along for the full cycling adventure. From travel logistics and athlete packing struggles to taking on some big boi climbs, she shares what it is actually like to train and ride in one of the most iconic cycling destinations. She gets into race prep, nutrition strategies, and gear choices, along with the little things no one warns you about when traveling as an endurance athlete. There are highs, there are lows, there are ants in the hotel room, and yes, there are saddle sores.

The Word ‘Jog’, Using SOS, & Fitting in Workouts

Have you ever had to get a workout in and taken a ridiculous route to get there? We feel you. Today, we touch on jogging… why is it such a triggering word??? Also, why did we sell wrapping paper in elementary school? From loving the jog-a-thon in elementary school to gum addictions to recapping a bike race - this episode is random. Also, beware of cougars in Arizona (cats or older women? The jury is still out.)

Hollywood Events, Poopy Airpods & Tib Trouble

This episode is a full grab bag of off course-ness from start to finish. We talk slick back hair struggles, Hollywood influencer events, networking that feels mildly intimidating, and a movie night that was so good it made us cry more than once. There are fashion dilemmas, footwear regrets, and the ongoing effort to look composed while absolutely not feeling that way.We also share injury updates and recovery frustrations, including the unfortunate news that Carolyn’s other tib is now tibbing too. Because apparently one angry leg was not enough. We get into the reality of trying to train while your body has completely different plans.Along the way we spiral into toilet AirPods, earwax oversharing, ClassPass adventures, yoga and Pilates thoughts, and some restaurant experiences. Part lifestyle, part running, part bodily functions.

  11. 56

More Miles, More Problems, & Burnout Culture

This week we're questioning everything we thought we knew about running, especially the idea that more miles and more suffering automatically equal better results. We talk about injury myths, overtraining, and why sometimes the bravest thing you can do is take a day off and not spiral about it. Turns out elite athletes recover on purpose, not just by accident.Of course we also share stories that have absolutely nothing to do with optimal performance, including grease fires, rogue smoke detectors, and the weird things your body does when you push it too hard for too long. We get into treadmill truth, influencer running culture, training apps that may or may not be helping, and why race hard or go home is not always the flex people think it is.If you are tired of hustle culture, stuck in an injury cycle, or just want permission to train in a way that actually feels sustainable, this one is for you. Smarter training, fewer breakdowns, and plenty of laughs along the way.

Running & Talking, High Heart Rates & Pilates Intimidation

Was Carolyn serving c*nt at pilates? You’ll have to listen to find out. Carolyn & Michelle both find themselves at Lagree studios for a random mid-week workout. If you’ve ever done Lagree or are curious about it, this might be the episode for you - BUT - they also discuss below-the-belt soreness (lol), owning a dog and pet peeves around it, trail running, and so much more. Do you talk while you run? They laugh about the awkwardness of hanging with your endurance friends outside of running or cycling for the first time, how endurance sports welcome you to cross-generational friendships, and doggie paddling. Michelle has a 15k coming up, so they touch on pacing, which leads them into a rant about 1k repeats workouts (why do they suck?) and high heart rates during training.

  13. 54

Midwest Moves, Midlife Thoughts, & Celebrity Chess

This week we recorded separately because life was doing the absolute most, so you are getting two very different but equally unhinged halves of the episode.Michelle checks in from St. Louis with moving updates, Midwest confusion, pecan coffee regret, and some very real thoughts about feeling lost in your 30s. She talks running hills that should not exist, yoga realizations after 15 years of doing it wrong, sprinting through airports with a dog, and the emotional rollercoaster of starting over in a new city. There are reflections on friendships, routines, happiness, and why sometimes you actually have to leave the couch to feel better.Carolyn brings us a completely different vibe with weekend recaps that include a golf tournament, a celebrity chess event, a spider encounter, and a brutal cycling adventure known as the Circle of Doom. Lessons are learned, preparation is questioned, and survival is celebrated. Two lives, two paths, one episode full of movement, chaos, and figuring things out as we go.

  14. 53

Visa News, Coughing Fits, & Weird PRs

This week we are all over the place in the best way. We start with microphone struggles, coughing fits where Carolyn essentially broke all her ribs, and some very real updates on visas and moving plans. We talk about running in cold weather, recent half marathon experiences (including accidentally taking them out way too fast), and why preparation and mindset matter even when things do not go according to plan.We also get into motion sickness while traveling, trying to pick up new hobbies with already packed schedules, and turning old race shirts into something actually wearable. There is house hunting in Los Angeles, standing desk opinions, chiropractor chat, and plenty of side commentary along the way. A little running, a little life admin, and a lot of relatable chaos.

  15. 52

Packing Boxes, Phone Anxiety, and Race Day Pressure

Carolyn and Michelle tackle the chaos of moving locally, internationally, and emotionally, and how it manages to derail routines, training, and mental health all at once. They swap stories about packing, decluttering, and the stress no one warns you about, then shift into running talk with local legends, race pressure, half and full marathon feelings, and redefining what a “good” race actually means.Naturally, things go off the rails with tangents about parents and streaming services, the horror of unexpected phone calls, dentist visits, and general social awkwardness. A little running, a lot of life, and plenty of laughs along the way.

Weather, Workouts, & Getting Back Into Training

Season Two is officially here, and your favorite hosts are back together catching up on all things life and running. From workouts and weather woes to marathon training challenges, we dive into what it’s been like getting back into a routine—and what still hurts (and why). We talk training plans, long runs, and the logistics of moving while trying to stay consistent, plus the very real question of how sore is too sore? The conversation wanders, as it always does, into gift-giving expectations, fitness aches, and the little things that keep training interesting. The episode wraps with some laughs, a look ahead at what’s coming next, and a promise to stay connected with listeners as Season Two gets rolling.

  17. 50

Fueling Mistakes, Bike Problems, & Emotional Finish Lines

A lot of race talk today! We’re recapping recent race days and all the things you can’t control once the gun goes off — mindset swings, fueling mishaps, questionable swim starts, and bike mechanics deciding to act up at the worst possible time. We get into the emotional highs and lows of race prep, what actually matters on race day, and the lessons you only learn by doing. We also talk race etiquette, the underrated power of support from fellow athletes, and why every race (good or bad) still moves you forward. If you’ve ever finished a race proud, frustrated, emotional, or all three — this one’s for you.

  18. 49

Flat Trails, Spooky Tales, & Too Much Lube

It’s one of those episodes — the kind where technical difficulties become part of the plot. Between apartment issues, recording chaos, and way too much chafing talk, we somehow manage to cover triathlon training, Halloween plans, and what our perfect race would look like (spoiler: flat course, good snacks, zero blisters). We also get into finding joy in training vs. the pressure of racing, how to plan race goals without losing your sanity, and the winter gear that keeps us from freezing our butts off. Basically: it’s equal parts running chat, life chaos, and unhinged race dreaming.

  19. 48

    Running 3 Days a Week, Random Race Era, & A $22k Race

A lot of random chat today! Carolyn has only ever eaten 1 oyster in her life. And it was in Ohio. Do we put her in jail? We talk about a new 5k “PR” (aka a Strava PR), random race era, time commitments for a full vs half marathon, a $22k race, and taking off random days in the middle of the week. Also, you’ll never regret a run unless it’s with Napa and she’s being annoying. Do you also need validation about skipping a run? Also, does the end of Daylight Saving Time ruin your running life? Also, MILLENIALS ARE ALLOWED TO BE CRINGE.

  20. 47

Alcohol & Training, Dieting, and Ultra Marathons

Questions continue in today’s episode! We start with some irrational fears after Michelle mentions her Achilles tendon popped (but didn’t pop?) during her morning workout (she’s better than everyone else - but only this day because of said morning workout).  We chat about not warming up properly and then not being able to hit your workout goals, people who run 100-mile weeks, and Carolyn mentions a 4-miler coming up in Ohio (race strategy TBD because how does one mentally prepare?!) We talk diet, motivation, drinking alcohol, running ultra marathons, and crewing ultras. Remember the Nike Women’s race drama? We get into some tangents, of course.Follow us on IG here: https://www.instagram.com/goingoffcoursepod/

  21. 46

Strava v Garmin, Fighting with Cyclists & a Makeover!

Strava & Garmin are fighting?! We dive into the drama and then break into Michelle’s current gripe with cyclists - and she also gets a helmet makeover - you don’t want to miss this. (Check Spotify and/or YouTube for video.) We laugh at the fact that cyclists always have to do the most (always wearing the full fit), clipping in for the first time, and how eating Nerd Gummy Clusters while running takes the fun out of eating candy. 30k is not 30k it’s 10k x 3. We talk about all things cycling fit and touch on running and swimming. Everything you need to know is here. Also, Speedo sluts stand up!

  22. 45

Travel Tales, Beer Steins, & Marathon Decisions

Carolyn’s back from Europe and she’s got stories—think Prague cobblestones, Vienna coffee, Munich beer tents (yes, Oktoberfest happened), and Switzerland being… well, Switzerland. She dives into the highs, the not-so-glamorous travel moments, and what it feels like to come back to normal life after pretending you’re an international woman of mystery. Also on deck: running challenges, why she’s pressing pause on the NYC Marathon this year, and the reminder that sometimes enjoying life means saying no. Prost to that. 🍻

  23. 44

Experience as a Pacer, Running Fashion Trends, & Mid-Race Conversations

Last week Michelle is solo in the house while Carolyn frolics in Munich! Today she’s touching on race spectating, running fashion, and what it’s like to be a racer in a half marathon. Napa says hello too and is casually possessed by a demon, but it’s fine. She talks about remembering races, getting emotional while spectating (more than when racing?), fashion tips that she thinks will come back (aka visors coming back with vengeance), and singing in the shower… is this talking to yourself? Crust is a key personality trait for her - listen to find out what that means and if you’re a crustacean yourself, you might relate. Don’t forget to leave your questions at [email protected] or the @goingoffcoursepod IG! Questions will be answered next week. GOD SPEED.

The Art of Knowing When to Push It & TikTok Drama

A lil solo intro today brought to you by Michelle while Carolyn frolics in Prague (because I think that’s what you do when in Prague, probably). After a lil intro we pick back up where we left off with 10k time trials, pacing strategies, Garmin watch screens, mental game, and feeling lucky to feel the pain of pushing it. We end today with some TikTok drama!

  25. 42

Dealing with DNFs, Grief and Long Transitions

Today we’re diving into some difficult topics surrounding grief all while Carolyn experiences her first DNF. Saying that, we keep today’s episode light hearted and send our love to Carolyn! We also recap the prep, swim and bike at Santa Cruz! <3

  26. 41

Getting Rubbed Raw, Pacing Math & Wine Decisions

Michelle finds money on the ground, Carolyn’s high school boyfriend throws money away, and somehow that sets the tone for the rest of this episode. We’re talking race schedules (including the three races Michelle impulsively signed up for after a glass, or three, of wine), trail race revelations (Carolyn literally found the meaning of life in 4 miles), and why pacing math is not for the emotionally unstable.Carolyn gets absolutely wrecked at PT, and we answer listener questions about fueling during a marathon. Also: the LA seasons, men vs. the sun (why won’t they wear sunscreen??), and a strong anti-contrarian stance from Carolyn. As always, it’s a little unhinged and a lot of fun.

  27. 40

The Pool Boy, Speed Work & Relay Races

The pool boy is between Carolyn’s legs as she has a great upper body workout with the masters swim. Michelle says Peter’s symbolism instead of Murphy’s Law and promises she’ll try the pool challenge before the next episode (aka seeing how long it takes her to swim 1 mile). The 3-mile swim went great, and Carolyn is currently gearing up for Santa Cruz in a couple of weeks! But the hip is hipping… hopefully a PT appointment goes her way. Michelle has an idea for her next race and will share more on the next episode…Long shower people - what are you doing in there?? The cops are back in action, and Carolyn has another ticket to pay… guess what it’s for!We discuss speed workouts and how to structure speed work from a running coach perspective (aka Michelle) using Amby Burfoot’s methodology. Not all running coaches use this, though, and Michelle mentions the popular Track Club Babe as an example.Transition glasses are crazzzzzzzzzy. Listen in for a lot of other random topics of the week!

  28. 39

Running & Weight Loss, Counting Macros, & The Naples Island Swim Event

This episode has a trigger warning as we discuss weight loss and disordered eating. We dive into calorie & macro counting (some would say you have to have a PhD in history to do the latter effectively), running for weight loss, and other taboo topics around weight and running. We also understand why Gen X and Boomers love Michelle Obama’s arms (now that we’re in our 30s).We start the chat with a discussion on sweating - why is it impossible to shower post-endurance sport??? We touch on Carolyn’s upcoming swim race (3 miles), which she’s doing after her long run on Sunday (Michelle thinks this is insane). We then circle back (for the 10th time) to why morning runners are superior, the stress (or lack thereof) of an evening workout, filming while running (race vs. easy pace), why men in their 30s with grey hair are cute, and what we feel the most “us” wearing. We love this episode and hope you can either relate or feel a part of the discussion!! <3

  29. 38

NYC Marathon, Endless Snacking, & Speedwork Survival

Michelle’s rocking a Neapolitan tan line, Carolyn’s getting the ick, and we’re back with another episode full of chaotic energy and running chat.We cover: acid reflux, Gushers (with less gush), silent beach discos, fruit roll-up tattoos, and Carolyn nearly eating the mic. Michelle braves a Garmin speed workout without pausing her watch (!!), and Carolyn suffers through hers under the high noon sun.Other topics: sun vs. moon run vibes, Mercury not being in Gatorade, Carolyn winning entry to the NYC Marathon, failing to name all the boroughs, and spiraling over Instagram growth, niches, and risqué follower strategies. Also: sibling cell phone plans and one deeply scarring Hawaiian restaurant moment. It’s a ride.

  30. 37

Garmin Tan Line Identity, Running Shoes, & The Hostage Follow Up

Carolyn is back from Ohio, and Michelle will be in California when you’re listening to this one!In this shorter episode, we touch on getting Global Entry, period cramps ruining runs (and people blaming us for insane vibes), and both get a little melancholy.Running topics include watch tanline identity… could you be the same person without your tanline? Michelle losing hers (sorry... it becoming ombré) has hurt her soul, while Carolyn’s holds strong. We also touch on HRV, swimming for the greater good (insert: potentially saving a dog), humidity vs. altitude... tangents may ensue.Michelle is heading to a wedding one of the weekends she’s in town. Where does one even find wedding clothes?! We’ll follow up on this one.

  31. 36

Millennial Running Core, The Style Challenge, and an Emergency

At the 10-minute mark, drama unfolds when Carolyn gets a random emergency alert on her phone. Chaos ensues! Before that, Michelle begins a mystery Trader Joe’s unboxing (what did Dav bring back from his travels? You’ll have to watch to find out)...This episode dives into a style/fashion challenge Michelle is attempting. We then dive back into trail running (is this a trail running podcast?! Hello??) and discuss top running questions. We challenge you to ask yourself these questions as well and reflect on your time as a runner! This brought up some questionable running choices we used to make… Did you wear a running knee band, too? That means you’re at least a millennial or probably a 60-year-old man.

  32. 35

Hoka Pipeline, Melasma Mustaches, and 26.2 Bumper Stickers

This episode is a petition for everyone to start liking their own IG posts. Today’s episode covers everything from drones in nature, trail running tips, getting lost with AllTrails, and breaking garbage disposals. Carolyn joins the masters swim team at the Rose Bowl and shares what being a master is all about. We talk first cars (both equally epic), going to church, eating before runs, listening to Usher on a run, and break into confessions. The Hoka pipeline is unpreventable! Listen to hear more about how we got there...

  33. 34

    Peaking, Carolyn’s Bday, 5ks, & Traveling Drama

For all tents & purposes - it’s a birthday episode! Luckily, Carolyn and Michelle have an appropriate age gap now, so they can continue to be friends. We talk about peaking (in regards to aging and training), the cliché-ness of not feeling older in your 30s, running faster as you age, and how Carolyn decided bingo at a wine bar was the right birthday move (watch out, she’s taking on elders in the church next). We cover traveling drama (trauma, perhaps?), being sore, gas station mishaps, and WHO IS DANIEL ADLER??? Show yourself?! Also, why do 5k races end a tad early sometimes? Straight Strava jail, unless you run through the finish at top speed to hit 3.11 (IYKYK).Chili’s influencing strategy is locked in, and we may be opening a restaurant called the Bear & the Boar (maybe). Watch to see who Carolyn randomly gets a present from mid-episode!

  34. 33

The Ironman Trot, Adult Spelling Bees, and What the Helly

Today we start with learning about cogs (well Carolyn talks about them and also other bike-related things), influencing, and we get the anticipated paragliding recap. And then, with a lot of random pivots, including adult spelling bees, ef/marry/kill The Office edition, narcissistic snakes on a run, and running at threshold pace, we dive into the 'What the Helly' questions you gave us!!These include what we do with old running shoes, the pool bandaid community (jail), using the bathroom during a race, social vs. solo workouts, see-through bibs, and running in the heat.Shout out to being all in on something when someone matches your exact enthusiasm level.

  35. 32

SD Triathlon Recap, Blood Tests, and Surprise Parties

Every podcast should start with a wholesome electric scooter wave moment w/ the retirement home community, in our humble opinions.  We’re talking about everything from the UV index to low iron struggles.Michelle’s hamstring (or is it a tendon?) is still whispering in her ear (same level as a whisper of marshmallow), and yes, we’re still blaming Botox.  Carolyn does more cardio than Michelle’s brain can contemplate. We chat about miles ran per week, professionally sleeping, and somehow everything goes back to someone having a PhD.Carolyn shares insights from her latest blood panel (ferritin, estrogen, inflammation…), and we talk openly about birth control and fainting in a Harley-Davidson.Plus:SD Tri race recap: third out of the water!Thoughts on race starts, Olympic tri fueling, and peeing logisticsPost-race In-N-Out fries (are they superior?)Upcoming summer vacations, small pepperonis being elite, and surprise parties are difficult when you can’t lie very well

  36. 31

SD Triathlon Prep, Natty Light, & Icks

Carolyn’s been circle swimming with boomers and drinking questionable water from strangers, while Michelle takes a staycation and gets the hardest massage known to man. We cover everything from pee beer (Natty Light, we see you), why bourbon is crazy to enjoy but IPAs slap, and whether you should feel morally obligated to tidy a hotel room before housekeeping.Other highlights:Napa is becoming a seasoned runner – Are jorts coming back for men? (Or are they just European?)– Gen Z slang, massage pressure preferences, and tipping etiquette– The Anthropology conspiracy – Pre-race SD triathlon logistics: pro start, transition logistics, the perfect weather, etc.– The hydrating 101: running with less water, chugging icks, and do not touch our snacks– Tri kits vs running outfits, Eagle Scouts = instant trust, and actors delivering water?? (SAG)– Plus: paragliding, candling ears, and being the last generation that signs in cursive.PURR

  37. 30

Elapsed Time Police, Strava Stalking, & IG Hybrid Athletes

Running through everything from fake eyelashes to pausing the Garmin.Michelle thinks Carolyn prefers short course swimming because it’s like jazz and continues to call a flip turn a kick turn, and we laugh about the older woman walking the wrong way on the track WITH PURPOSE. Carolyn’s debating paragliding (which goes against her “I don’t do anything risky” mention earlier in the pod.) + another running etiquette debate about bike lanes. If we call someone a “lady” you know we mean business. We also dive into: – Heat maps and Strava stalking– The psychology of chasing a 7:59 min/mile ave pace instead of an 8:00– Fast cool downs, auto-pause, and elapsed time police– Hybrid athletes, Hyrox (or is it hydrox?), and Carolyn’s continued gym domination– And yes, the tib is tibbingIf you know the difference between paragliding and hang gliding, please let Carolyn know because we’re still not sure.

  38. 29

Swim Etiquette, Locked Diaries, & Getting Faster

Stay tuned until the end for details on our giveawayyyyyy. This week, we run through everything from floss picks on the ground to getting faster at running. Michelle possibly tweaks her hamstring and Carolyn follows pool etiquette to a T (after tackling a few 60-year-old men). We need to stop debating heart rate & sleep scores and start debating swim lane etiquette. Also, shoutout to the highlight of our lives… the scholastic book fair (locked diaries, anyone?). Plus: Carolyn is type A part 12, warming up for runs, how it’s so easy for your fastest mile to be during a race, personality types, stress snowballs, and seeing improvement with working out.

  39. 28

Partying in Spain, Botox, & Bottom Feeders

Carolyn’s back from Spain (again) after tearing it up on the dance floor. We dive into Michelle’s latest theories, trail running, and when to pull out the party Garmin. Carolyn doesn’t like bottom feeders but loves a phat bowl of Chipotle - but it brings up the question… will the bowl kill you or bring you life?We cover everything from Sex in the Suburbs, to how hunger is suspicious on airplanes, to travel struggles as athletes, and navigating long runs when you keep going back and forth because you don’t get the route and Strava is telling you to turn. Plus: getting Botox, workout envy, sweaty runners, and losing Napa at the airport. And rest days - are you Friday, Sunday, or Monday? Or… another day of the week? Also discussed: the art of animal naming and buying expensive purses.

  40. 27

Microdosing, Secrets Skills, & Trail Running

Dav listened to Michelle edit parts of this and proceeded to ask her “wait, isn’t this suppose to be a running and/or triathlon podcast?”This week, we cover everything from running guilt to ghost theories—with a few tangents in between (this is our favorite episode, we think.) Carolyn is anticipating the flight to Spain in a few days. Dav also told Michelle he’s upset with her after listening to the language segment of this podcast.  Michelle opens up about the pressure of having a coach and feeling guilty for not going back to reattempt the stupid course record she told everyone about (the last two episodes). Carolyn somehow knows more about animals than ever (and rocks). We talk about running solo on trails and the low-key investigative work required to find good running routes while traveling (including who we think won’t kill us).We also get into:Carolyn’s proposal story Ayahuasca and microdosingWhether ghosts are realType A vs Type B (again)Buffalo sauce vs. Carolyn’s spice tolerance + Michelle preferring to cry from heat pain (are you Michelle or Carolyn here)The things we’re weirdly good at A whole lotta graphite (iykyk)Good luck, listeners.

Breaking the Law, Influencing Tips, Running Back-to-Back Races

Carolyn gets pulled over mid-ride for a stop sign situation (solitary confinement?), Michelle is learning more Fred moves (RE: hydration pack on the bike, which mildly upset her), and Joey is out there with flowing locks. We also reflect on the small, unsettling moments that make you wonder: am I kind of nasty? Also in this episode:A reminder (a PSA) to update your car’s registration Our ongoing beef with AllTrails and why trail running might be your answer if hiking feels too slowLife with a car in LA: parking ticket chaos and the ongoing war against street sweepingMichelle’s crackerjack lifestyle Kidney stone consequencesSterilizing anything with hot water cleans it (science)Carolyn’s early days as a weather influencer on Twitter and the B she got in her college social media classTop three things to consider if you actually want to grow on social mediaA behind-the-scenes look at which of our Reels performed best and whyInstagram giveaway strategiesRunning back-to-back racesWaking up early vs sleeping in w/ a workout scheduleRage-cleaning the stove at 10 p.m.

St. George Recap, Feeling Tendy, and Bryson Strikes Again

Carolyn’s back from racing St. George and has alll of the deets - starting with suspiciously good pre-race sleep. We unpack what actually happens at a pro meeting, passing when swimming, ironman drafting rules, and why ice in the bra just hits different. The race may have not gone as planned, but her fueling was on point.Meanwhile, Michelle doubles down on her belief that if she ever bikes again, elbow and knee pads are non-negotiable. We spiral into a debate over 2-lane vs 4-lane highways, whether men wear cups on the bike, and the emotional toll of strategically stealing Strava segments. Also: exotic chafes, bath people, Ironman tattoos, essential poops, and the consideration of tumbling into a thicket. Bryson continues his reign of gym dominance. We’ve decided we’re getting our edge back in 2025, so stay tuned for whatever that is. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

More Sore Than Boston, A Random PR?!, and Bryson Ruining Carolyn’s Life

This week, we’re emotionally unhinged and physically unwell, but in a good way! We kick things off with a small menty B and a constructive conversation about good handwriting, which we COULD have if using a soft felt-tip pen with smooth jazz playing in the background. Michelle’s thumbs are getting jacked from editing on her phone, while Carolyn’s dealing with mysterious car noises - could her car have too many belts??Michelle mentions the HIIT workout that left her more sore than the Boston Marathon, the eternal mystery of weak calves, and why post-race runs make you feel like you’ve lost all your fitness. This is now a borderline gym podcast, but Carolyn’s still trying to escape her LA Fitness contract (convo may involve protein farts). Also in this episode:•Rose Bowl Half recap + Carolyn’s PR!!!!•Running belts and why they suck •St. George race prep + hot weather running tips (race is next week!)•Michelle’s sugar struggles and Carolyn’s lost rock collection (may they RIP)•Animals with superior taste buds (stay until the end)We cuss a lot in this episode, so fair warning (classic). It's Giving BRAT Diet, Boston Recap, Gel Slander

This week on Going Off Course, we’re dealing with Italian restaurants refusing to carb-load on our terms, confidently making up words, and debating the important stuff—like whether you should wear underwear when you run. Also, don’t forget to arch your bishop when you wear a running cap.Carolyn ponders if chain Mexican food can be authentic. Michelle reminisces on her El Torito days. Are the days of free samples at race expos officially dead? Would you hit up an influencer event before a marathon shakeout? Plus, a side-by-side Maurten comparison is coming... once Carolyn pays her taxes. We’re officially rebranding to Going Off Course Ultra after both running 26.5 miles in our last marathons, and of course, we kick off our Boston recap after losing the first 30 minutes of recording because that’s just how we operate. Carolyn shares updates as she gears up for the Rose Bowl Half (shoutout to the donut run club 🍩), and we both share our struggles with strength training—spoiler alert: calf raises are trying to kill us.There’s also a little social media talk (hello, Instagram engagement & influencers) and a devastating discovery: you can’t listen to music in a race if you’re a pro. Michelle also learns about crosswinds for the first time, and we brainstorm an invention nobody asked for: full-face glitter tattoos—and why stop there? Let's make a pill that makes your whole body sparkle. We wrap it all up with 20 peaceful minutes without Napa barking, who’s mastered the art of chilling at exactly the right time. They also realize they need to stop slandering Maurten. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Episode for the Girls (and those who mew)

This is Michelle’s favorite episode, she thinks. -Michelle (after editing)This one’s for the girls (and the guys curious about menstrual cups, mewing, and why we might be qualified to talk about men’s trousers). Have you ever heard about mewing? Don’t worry, you’ll be able to say yes after this episode. Find up mewing. This relates (somehow to) clenching teeth, which is parallel to the discovery that Carolyn’s toes might be part primate, which is perfect if she ever needed to climb a palm tree. There’s talk of tampon brand deals, internet cafes, and losing a menstrual cup like it’s a set of keys. Michelle temporarily forgets how birth control works, Carolyn breathes like SpongeBob, and we spiral into Black Mirror territory over content rights. We also talk about goals outside of racing, the identity crisis that is pre-race blues, and Michelle’s Boston Marathon weekend plans (plus how many times we say she’s going to find a good bagel). Will Carolyn convince Jordan and the cats to sleep in an oxygen deprivation tent? You’ll have to find out. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Influencing in Mallorca, A Poisoning, and The Gams

Carolyn’s back from Spain with stories—including a food poisoning fiasco and influencer moments in Mallorca. They spiral into iPod Nanos and Now 5. The gams are gamming but the shin is not shinning. Michelle is tapering for Boston and Carolyn found out she got into St. George! We agree with the Mormons - Saturday races for everyone! The Perfect Messy Bun, Spain Prep, and When Running Starts to Click

Messy buns, marathon goals, and the math of squeezing in a run before a flight—this one’s got it all. We cover the evolution of early 2000s hairstyles (Michelle’s signature ponytail, Carolyn's swimmer-perfect messy bun), dramatic taper week injuries (yes, from making a reel), and the questionable ways Michelle consumes electrolytes. Carolyn preps for Spain while debating whether to raw dog the flight to the Zwift theme song, and Michelle casually gets her marathon PR wrong. We talk about the upcoming Zwift trip, Boston goals, future race plans (Rose Bowl Half? St. George?!), and the moment running just starts to click. Plus: ironman guy energy, emo phases, and why people are always surprised Carolyn’s not tall?Next episode: the Spain recap and Boston ramp up!  Hosted on Acast. Calamari Pre-Race, Upcoming Brand Trip(!) & Exotic Long Runs

In this week’s episode, Carolyn and Michelle discuss everything from long runs to swimming to Carolyn's upcoming brand trip. Carolyn opens up about her obsession with national park gift shops and they both agree: normalize wearing driving gloves when your nails are wrecked.Carolyn has been flip-turning since the womb, Michelle raced a stranger on the bike path (it was his fault), but he also probably didn't know it was a race. Did you know that Friday long runs make you a lil exotic? Plus: pre-race calamari, peeing (or not) during endurance events, calculating salt intake, and the one baby name on Michelle’s list that she already hates and she's open for you to use.Bonus: you'll find out who has a superior middle toe, Carolyn admits her love for airplane food (a red flag?), and babies with the name Bruce are born with a strong jaw, and that's based on science. LA Marathon Recap, Trust Funds, and Twerking During a Race

In this episode, we recap a BIG one: the LA Marathon. But first - what would you do if you wanted a sandwich, but they only have quiches? Huge PRs were had, but not without chafing and questionable handheld water bottle storage. We get into everything from emotional math mid-race to the cult-like energy of pace groups and an interesting realization—do you share your marathon PR from your watch or the official course time? Also featuring:•Carolyn’s proud post-race pee moment•PSA: Don’t open your Liquid IV with your teeth•Would you rather fuel your LR with Maurten or eat a steak dinner?•The existential fear of dropping your phone into a porta-potty•Rhombus-shaped butt chafing and marathon twerking•Perfect poop mornings, race day influencers, special shoelaces, and why PRs feel weirdShout out to Micah, Magellan’s spiritual descendant navigating Dodger Stadium, and everyone who has ever cooked a meal after running 26.2 miles on pure willpower. And yes—Michelle really did say there are 22 weeks in a year. Marathon Week, Penis-Shaped Runs & Poisoned Gel

Michelle survived the long run from hell (spoiler: she tried to hit marathon pace, fueled by oatmeal, chia, and two large coffees - you can guess the rest) and Carolyn is days out from the LA marathon still in-between carbon plated shoes. Tib is not tibbing and shin is not shinning.Today is all about marathon running, for ex. the difference in taper between marathoners and triathletes. But we also cover:We also cover:The real reason the last episode didn’t make it to YouTube (Michelle got the ick from herself). Why marathons are like eggs The undeniable superiority of penis-shaped running routes.Rogue gels—would you pick one up off the ground? (If you say no, are you sure?)The dangerous truth about CO2 (mostly related to whipped cream).Do Oceanside 70.3 and Surf City Marathon slap or suck? Could be both.Craving salt & vinegar chips = You’re officially an adult.Horoscopes for the 100th time. Finally, Michelle asks Carolyn to look at the moon at the same time as her tonight, wholesome.
