For 1700 years the church has celebrated this festival opening Holy Week with hosannas and palm branches. The time for Christ’s glory has come. But he will not gain his glory in the manner of other kings. Rather, he would humble himself in great acts of love for us to save us. His choice of a donkey to enter Jerusalem was humble, but his actions were not. With his actions, he proclaimed, “I am the Lord’s Servant, the Messiah long promised. He asks for a discerning heart – one that listens to God’s voice, heeds God’s Word, and follows where he leads. He asks for a heart that is after his Savior Jesus. This week we see that even though God entrusts his gifts to us, they belong to him. As Christians wait for Jesus to return, we are commanded to faithfully use the gifts that God has entrusted to us. That word “faithful” is a nebulous word, yet a beautifully broad word. To be faithful means to be trusting, trusting that God has given the gift for us to put to use. A future without hope of judgment is a future without peace. And if there is no hope of judgment, victims would be driven to despair or to be consumed by a desire for revenge. A future that includes judgment, however, gives those who are wronged the peace of knowing that one day there will be perfect justice. Today we hear God’s promise to return and bring perfect judgment and justice. Yet, between the two, Paul says “I can’t choose” even though he knows the one is better by far. That’s because Paul knew that if he continued living, he would have more fruitful labor ahead of him to proclaim Christ to more people. If he died, he would be ushered to Jesus’ side because of Jesus’ resurrection. Paul was torn between two wonderful options, and so are we.
