Ep. 62- Family Trauma, Breaking Cycles of Harm, and Supporting Young People with Youth Untroubled

Wise Yourself Up is back!!We’re starting off the season with three incredible guests, Natasha Gold, Una O’Brien and Carly MacDonald, the founders of Youth Untroubled, to talk about something that so many families experience but very few people talk about honestly.Across the UK, more and more young people are entering care, psychiatric units or the justice system. Yet behind these statistics are families who were often asking for help years before things reached crisis point.Parents who felt overwhelmed, children who were struggling with trauma, and systems that simply did not have the capacity to respond in the way that was needed.Youth Untroubled was created to challenge that reality.Natasha, Una and Carly have developed the ISAC model, an intensive systemic approach that works with the whole family instead of placing the responsibility for change solely on the child.By working closely with parents, understanding the context around behaviour, and supporting families consistently over a longer period of time, they are seeing outcomes that are genuinely life changing. In this episode, they explore how trauma can show up as challenging behaviour in young people, why many parents feel blamed or overwhelmed by conflicting advice, and how real repair can begin when shame is replaced with understanding. The conversation also opens up rarely discussed topics such as sibling sexual abuse and harmful sexual behaviour, and why accountability and rehabilitation are essential if we want to break cycles of harm rather than simply punish them.Trigger warning: This episode includes discussion of child sexual abuse and sibling harm. Please listen with care.Timestamps00:00 Welcome to the podcast03:44 Meet the founders of Youth Untroubled06:37 How Natasha, Una and Carly first met and their journey into this work12:16 How the ISAC model was created to support families in a different way14:15 What out of home placements are and why young people end up there19:23 Understanding trauma and the behaviours that often follow26:50 Navigating blame, shame and repair within families32:39 Discussing sibling sexual abuse and the complexity families face44:38 The results of the Youth Untroubled model and plans for wider rolloutA huge thank you to Natasha, Una and Carly for the important work they are doing to support young people and families and for sharing their knowledge in this episode. Please consider sharing the episode if you enjoyed it, as spreading awareness about these topics is one of the most powerful ways we can support change.Connect with Carla:Instagram: @CarlaMcGreevy1Work with Carla: Carla McGreevyJoin Carla’s mailing list: Stay ConnectedConnect with Youth Untroubled:Youth Untroubled Website: https://www.youthuntroubled.co.uk/ISTAC Website: https://www.istac.co.uk/

Ep. 21 Breaking Free from the Grip of Exercise Addiction

Movement can be so good for the body, but at what point are you doing more harm than good when it comes to exercising? You might not even be aware of this, but you could have an exercise addiction. I know that if someone had tried to tell me in my 20s that I had an exercise addiction, I wouldn’t have listened to them. But I’m so glad that, with the help of therapy, I was able to acknowledge this addiction and break free from it.Exercise is so so good for your body and mind, but this doesn’t mean that you should be pushing through sickness, grief, or canceling plans in order to get a session in.In this episode, I talk about the 8 signs of exercise addiction, my personal experience with it, and ways that you can overcome it and cultivate more self-love.Timestamps:00:00 Intro to topic and defining exercise addiction03:05 8 signs of an exercise addiction12:32 My personal experience with exercise addiction and the realisation of the need for change18:21 Questions to reflect on your relationship with exercise25:27 Taking small steps with your addiction and the power of pausingThank you so much for listening to today’s episode! Ep. 20 How Can I Trust My Body when it’s Attracted to F*ckboys!?

I truly believe that your body holds all the answers to your questions. It’s your wisest guide. But we’ve forgotten how to listen to it’s signals.I also believe that making choices and taking action purely based on thought, is a major contributor to the intense suffering we see today e.g. record levels of anxiety, obesity and addiction. But what a lot of women can’t make sense of, is how can their body be their wisest guide, if it’s signaling attraction to f*ckboys? The key to understanding the messages of wisdom communicated to us by our bodies, is to learn the difference between how a wise message feels, and how a trauma response feels - where our inner child gets triggered and needs soothing. This episode covers: Holidays in France and putting down more solid roots in London My ongoing frustration at heterosexual men for their lack of enthusiasm to use condoms How the patriarchy has really benefited from woman being disconnected from our intuition How to know the difference between wisdom from your body vs being triggered by trauma (with examples) My experience of learning to distinguish between my inner child asking for love vs recognising the intuitive whispers of the soul The importance of forgiving yourself for being humanI currently have a limited number of spaces available to work with me 1:1 online. I support you in the feeling part of your healing journey. Talk therapy is powerful, but often being disconnected from our body and breath holds us back.I work with you to help you listen to what your body is telling you, what is being revealed in psychosomatics. I curate breathwork and movement practices, bespoke to you, to guide you to move through emotions and symptoms.Reach out to learn more!Music: Triple Point by Swoose

    Ep. 19 Addicted to Addiction

This was an extremely hard episode to record. It focuses on my experience of being in a relationship with a heroin addict. How it unfolded and how it changed me.I hope it helps because I know there are so many women out there with someone in their lives who is struggling with addiction. In this episode: Entering the relationship despite knowing he was likely to use again Why I was drawn to trying to "save" him The nature of our relationship and what it was like The moment things became clear and I decided to leave How the experience impacted me and what I learnt How society is conditioned to turn a blind eye to addictions How therapy and healing helps us recognise our own repeated patterns quickerMy retreat is just around the corner, 7-9th June, in the magical lands Donegal. If you're craving rest or feeling stuck in life, join us to pause, recharge and reflect.I'd love to hear any feedback and thoughts on this episode! Ep. 18 Breathwork: The Body's Innate Ability to Heal with Steven Ebbers

One thing Steven often feels is misunderstood about breathwork is that it’s not about the breathing. Rather the breathe is an entry point into your inner world. It allows you figure out what’s alive for you, what’s true, what’s real. And that the same concept applies to other healing modalities too.Steven is a London based Breathwork Facilitator who helps people feel safe enough to re-establish their relationship with themselves, others and the world around us through breathwork and somatic therapy. He has a background in Clinical Psychology, is an accredited Coach and is currently training as a Cranio-Sacral therapist.Expect to hear about: The evolutionary factors behind men’s lack of engagement in therapy Steven’s background in psychology, experience of talk therapy and ultimately finding the biggest benefit in somatics How healing modalities are just a route inwards to figure out what is alive for you Defining breathwork and it’s different types: functional vs therapeutic What Cranio-Sacral Therapy is and how it works Why is it that we can accept certain things we do not understand, e.g. WiFi technology, but have doubts about others? E.g. the body’s innate ability to heal The reality of struggling as a learning practitioner. Frustration and resistance to surrendering. Learning to trust the processAs always, I adore receiving your DMs. Pop me over your thoughts, feedback and questions. @carlamcgreevy1 on Instagram. Upcoming Retreats:Carla’s: Ocean Retreat.
